This paper considers the educational provision for, and general treatment of, refugee and asylum seeker children in Australia, using a framework of governmentality. The paper describes the regimes of practices which govern refugees and asylum seekers in Australia, including mandatory detention and a complex set of visa categorisations, and considers their consequences for the educational provision for children. It addresses three questions: How is it possible that the rights of children have been rendered invisible in and by a democratic state? How are repressive and even violent practices normalised in a liberal state, so that ordinary citizens show so little concern about them? And what should our response be as educators and intellectuals? In conclusion, it explores Foucault's notions of ethics and fearless speech (parrhesia) as a basis for an ethics of engagement in education.

Adrenomedullin (AM) has two specific receptors formed by the calcitonin-receptor-like receptor (CL) and receptor activity-modifying protein (RAMP) 2 or 3. These are known as AM1 and AM2 receptors, respectively. In addition, AM has appreciable affinity for the CGRP1 receptor, composed of CL and RAMP1. The AM1 receptor has a high degree of selectivity for AM over CGRP and other peptides, and AM 22-52 is an effective antagonist at this receptor. By contrast, the AM2 receptor shows less specificity for AM, having appreciable affinity for βCGRP. Here, CGRP8-37 is either equipotent or more effective as an antagonist than AM22-52, depending on the species from which the receptor components are derived. Thus, under the appropriate circumstances it seems that βCGRP might be able to activate both CGRP 1 and AM2 receptors and AM could activate both AM 1 and AM2 receptors as well as CGRP1 receptors. Current peptide antagonists are not sufficiently selective to discriminate between these three receptors. The CGRP-selectivity of RAMP1 and RAMP3 may be conferred by a putative disulfide bond from the N-terminus to the middle of the extracellular domain of these molecules. This is not present in RAMP2. Advance directives are one mechanism for preserving the rights of individuals to exercise some control over their health care when serious illness may prevent them from direct participation. Nurses, as the health care providers with the closest and most sustained contact with critically ill and dying patients, are positioned to assist patients to plan for future health care needs. Although a majority of nurses favor the concept of advance directives for their patients and for themselves, they have not played a significant role in facilitating advance health care planning with their patients nor implemented advance health care planning for themselves.^ Research has also shown that differing forms of education and counseling increase the completion rates for advance directives in selected populations, mostly the elderly and seriously ill. Not yet developed are effective educational strategies to assist nurses and nurse students to make optimal contributions in assisting their clients' plans for future health care decision-making. This study sought to determine whether specific learning strategies (a) increased the involvement of nurses and nurse students in facilitating advance care planning with patients and (b) increased the percentage of the nurses' and nurse students' own personal advance care planning activities.^ The study compared two learning interventions and two populations, nurses and nurse students. The participants were randomly assigned to one of the two learning interventions, L1 or L2. Participants in L1 received a lecture, discussion and exploration of the forces impacting on advance directive behavior. Participants in L2 received the same intervention components with the additional component of group practice completing advance directives.^ Analysis of the data by chi-square and logistic regression did not support the hypotheses that the practice component would make a difference in the participants' facilitation of advance care planning with patients or in their own personal advance care planning activities. There were significant differences in post-intervention behavior between the nurse and nurse student groups. The nurses in the study did significantly more facilitation of advance care planning with patients and completed significantly more advance care documents than the nurse students post-intervention. However, the nurse students held more post-intervention family discussions than did the nurses. ^

Rapid population increase and booming economic growth have caused a significant escalation in car ownership in many cities, leading to additional or, multiple traffic problems on congested roadways. The increase of automobiles is generating a significant amount of congestion and pollution in many cities. It has become necessary to find a solution to the ever worsening traffic problems in our cities. Building more roadways is nearly impossible due to the limitations of right-of-way in cities. Studies have shown that guideway transit could provide effective transportation and could stimulate land development. The Medium-Capacity Guideway Transit (MCGT) is one of the alternatives to solve this problem. The objective of this research was to better understand the characteristics of MCGT systems, to investigate the existing MCGT systems around the world and determine the main factors behind the planning of successful systems, and to develop a MCGT planning guide. The factors utilized in this study were determined and were analyzed using Excel. A MCGT Planning Guide was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic. ^ A MCGT was defined as a transit system whose capacity can carry up to 20,000 passengers per hour per direction (pphpd). The results shown that Light Rail Transit (LRT) is favored when peak hour demand is less than 13,000 pphpd. Automated People Mover (APM) is favored when the peak hour demand is more than 18,000 pphpd. APM systems could save up to three times the waiting time cost compared to that of the LRT. If comfort and convenience are important, then using an APM does make sense. However, if cost is the critical factor, then LRT will make more sense because it is reasonable service at a reasonable price. If travel time and safety (accident/crush) costs were included in calculating life-cycle “total” costs, the capital cost advantage of LRT disappeared and APM could become very competitive. The results also included a range of cost-performance criteria for MCGT systems that help planners, engineers, and decision-makers to select the most feasible system for their respective areas. ^

The work referred to above, in order to contribute to the legal issues, economic, political and social of the violation of social rights, performs even firmer approach to various implementation mechanisms of social rights in Brazil. Therefore, it begins the study dealing with aspects and important characters of the rights under discussion, as its normative forecast, concept, classifications; respect of social rights with the existential minimum; the principle of reservation of the possible and the need to use this principle as optimization commandment of state resources and the deficit of the realization of social rights in the country. This, in later chapters, in an interdisciplinary approach, challenges and proposals for the realization of social rights by bringing in each chapter, mechanisms for such implementation. That way, as a general objective, it has been to contribute to the discussed problems, when present proposals for the realization of social rights in the Brazilian context. As specific objectives, as well as record the key aspects of the rights in allusion, the one has to promote the perspective of economic development and taxation as posts instruments that the State must be focused on the promotion of social rights by registering in this context that nonexistent economic development without reducing poverty, misery and social inequality and adding that there should be a directly proportional relationship between the tax burden in the country and the human and social development index; analyze the achievement of budget control as essential and healthy measure for the realization of social rights; highlight the importance of society to the achievement of unavailable social interests, affirming the need for the implementation of participatory democracy and, in this line, brings knowledge of the Constitution and the constitutional sense as elements that provide the constitutional progress. Finally, it presents a study on public policies, considering that these are equivalent to the primary means of the promotion of social rights. That way it analyzes the stages that integrate public policies, ranging from the perception of social problems for evaluation and control of the policies implemented; debate about the administrative discretion in when it comes to public policies; brings the classification of essential public policies, the relationship of these with the existential minimum, control parameters and, finally, the legalization of public policy, regarded as legitimate to remedy the unconstitutional state failure and give normative effectiveness and strength to the defining constitutional rules for fundamental social rights. It uses to achieve the objectives outlined, the bibliographic and normative approach method and performs an analysis of jurisprudence related understandings to matter. In the conclusions, it rescues the most important aspects elucidated at work, with the aim of giving emphasis to the proposals and mechanisms that contribute to the solution of the discussed problems.
