Conventional inorganic materials for x-ray radiation sensors suffer from several drawbacks, including their inability to cover large curved areas, me- chanical sti ffness, lack of tissue-equivalence and toxicity. Semiconducting organic polymers represent an alternative and have been employed as di- rect photoconversion material in organic diodes. In contrast to inorganic detector materials, polymers allow low-cost and large area fabrication by sol- vent based methods. In addition their processing is compliant with fexible low-temperature substrates. Flexible and large-area detectors are needed for dosimetry in medical radiotherapy and security applications. The objective of my thesis is to achieve optimized organic polymer diodes for fexible, di- rect x-ray detectors. To this end polymer diodes based on two different semi- conducting polymers, polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) and poly(9,9-dioctyluorene) (PFO) have been fabricated. The diodes show state-of-the-art rectifying be- haviour and hole transport mobilities comparable to reference materials. In order to improve the X-ray stopping power, high-Z nanoparticle Bi2O3 or WO3 where added to realize a polymer-nanoparticle composite with opti- mized properities. X-ray detector characterization resulted in sensitivties of up to 14 uC/Gy/cm2 for PVK when diodes were operated in reverse. Addition of nanoparticles could further improve the performance and a maximum sensitivy of 19 uC/Gy/cm2 was obtained for the PFO diodes. Compared to the pure PFO diode this corresponds to a five-fold increase and thus highlights the potentiality of nanoparticles for polymer detector design. In- terestingly the pure polymer diodes showed an order of magnitude increase in sensitivity when operated in forward regime. The increase was attributed to a different detection mechanism based on the modulation of the diodes conductivity.

The present dissertation aims at simulating the construction of lexicographic layouts for an Italian combinatory dictionary based on real linguistic data, extracted from corpora by using computational methods. This work is based on the assumption that the intuition of the native speaker, or the lexicographer, who manually extracts and classifies all the relevant data, are not adequate to provide sufficient information on the meaning and use of words. Therefore, a study of the real use of language is required and this is particularly true for dictionaries that collect the combinatory behaviour of words, where the task of the lexicographer is to identify typical combinations where a word occurs. This study is conducted in the framework of the CombiNet project aimed at studying Italian Word Combinationsand and at building an online, corpus-based combinatory lexicographic resource for the Italian language. This work is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 describes the criteria considered for the classification of word combinations according to the work of Ježek (2011). Chapter 1 also contains a brief comparison between the most important Italian combinatory dictionaries and the BBI Dictionary of Word Combinations in order to describe how word combinations are considered in these lexicographic resources. Chapter 2 describes the main computational methods used for the extraction of word combinations from corpora, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods. Chapter 3 mainly focuses on the practical word carried out in the framework of the CombiNet project, with reference to the tools and resources used (EXTra, LexIt and "La Repubblica" corpus). Finally, the data extracted and the lexicographic layout of the lemmas to be included in the combinatory dictionary are commented, namely the words "acqua" (water), "braccio" (arm) and "colpo" (blow, shot, stroke).

Active head turns to the left and right have recently been shown to influence numerical cognition by shifting attention along the mental number line. In the present study, we found that passive whole-body motion influences numerical cognition. In a random-number generation task (Experiment 1), leftward and downward displacement of participants facilitated small number generation, whereas rightward and upward displacement facilitated the generation of large numbers. Influences of leftward and rightward motion were also found for the processing of auditorily presented numbers in a magnitude-judgment task (Experiment 2). Additionally, we investigated the reverse effect of the number-space association (Experiment 3). Participants were displaced leftward or rightward and asked to detect motion direction as fast as possible while small or large numbers were auditorily presented. When motion detection was difficult, leftward motion was detected faster when hearing small number and rightward motion when hearing large number. We provide new evidence that bottom-up vestibular activation is sufficient to interact with the higher-order spatial representation underlying numerical cognition. The results show that action planning or motor activity is not necessary to influence spatial attention. Moreover, our results suggest that self-motion perception and numerical cognition can mutually influence each other.
