This report documents the results of the field inventory and evaluation of the nominated routes. Data is provided describing the visual and heritage character of the nominated routes and locations important to this character. Graphs, displays and maps were produced using the rating system described in the Iowa Scenic Byway Designation Guide. Discussions of specific inventory procedures and evaluation techniques can be found in two reports, Iowa Scenic Byway Evaluation, December 1992, and Iowa Scenic Byway Evaluation, November 1995.

This report is submitted pursuant to a contract dated August 30, 1967, between the Iowa State Highway Commission and Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff, Consulting Engineers, in connection with studies determining (11,A) alternate pavement designs, and (11,B) criteria for geometric design studies. Included herein is that portion of the report covering Paragraph 11,A, comprising preparation of alternate type pavement designs (Portland Cement and Asphaltic Concrete) for the Cedar Valley Freeway and proposed US-518 from 1-80 to US-30. These alternate pavement designs consider quality and availability of aggregates, soil conditions and traffic information, to determine details and dimensions of pavement design. Comparative cost studies were prepared from alternate design data and recommendations as to pavement type are presented for Commission review.

Crossroads 2000 was the second biennial transportation research conference cosponsored by the Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE) at Iowa State University and the Iowa Department of Transportation. This proceedings is the set of papers presented at the conference. Twenty-five categories of papers were presented in five concurrent sessions. Reflecting the increasingly critical role of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in maintaining and enhancing transportation safety and efficiency, one category in each concurrent session addressed an area of ITS. However, papers were included from all areas of interest, ranging from transportation infrastructure design to transportation policy. The proceedings contains 58 papers.

The proposed Davenport to Lacrosse route corridor includes the Iowa counties of Scott, Clinton, Jackson, and Dubuque. In addition, an influence region has been defined which includes six additional counties. The region is predominantly agricultural, however, following the national trend, movement away from the small farm to large mechanized operations has created an adequate labor force for the two major industrial cities of Davenport and Dubuque. From a total 1971 regional work force of 186,990, only 23,190, or slightly over 12% were engaged in agriculture, 91% of the land area being agricultural notwithstanding. It is forecasted that the urban population of the two counties containing the above cities will increase by 26% between 1970 and 1990, while the population of the remaining region counties can expect only a 3% increase.

Presented in this report is an investigation of the use of "sand-lightweight" concrete in prestressed concrete structures. The sand-lightweight concrete consists of 100% sand substitution for fines, along with Idealite coarse and medium lightweight aggregate and Type I Portland Cement.

The Present Serviceability Index was developed through the AASHO (now AASHTO) Road Test near Ottawa, Illinois, from 1956 to 1962.1 longitudinal profile and physical deterioration such as cracking, patching, and rut depth (for flexible pavements) were considered in deriving these Present Serviceability Index (PSI) equations

The purpose of the present recordation project is to provide a documentary record of the Thomas A. Graham House in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office regarding historic property studies for houses. Background research for this project was conducted in April 2002. The property was inspected and photographed in November 2001.

This report concerns the stabilization of three crushed limestones by an ss-1 asphalt emulsion and an asphalt cement, 120-150 penetration. Stabilization is evaluated by marshall stability and triaxial shear tests. Test specimens were compacted by the marshall, standard proctor and vibratory methods. Stabilization is evaluated primarily by triaxial shear tests in which confining pressures of 0 to 80 psi were used. Data were obtained on the angle of internal friction, cohesion, volume change, pore water pressure and strain characteristics of the treated and untreated aggregates. The MOHR envelope, bureau of reclamation and modified stress path methods were used to determine shear strength parameters at failure. Several significant conclusions developed by the authors are as follows: (1) the values for effective angle of internal friction and effective cohesion were substantially independent of asphalt content, (2) straight line MOHR envelopes of failure were observed for all treated stones, (3) bituminous admixtures did little to improve volume change (deformation due to load) characteristics of the three crushed limestones, (4) with respect to pore water characteristics (pore pressures and suctions due to lateral loading), bituminous treatment notably improved only the bedford stone, and (5) at low lateral pressures bituminous treatments increased stability by limiting axial strain. This would reduce rutting of highway bases. At high lateral pressures treated stone was less stable than untreated stone.

This handbook is an inspector's aid. It was written by two inspectors to bring together all of the most often-needed information involved in their work. The beginning inspector should look to the handbook as a reference for standards of good practice. The Standard Specifications and Special Provisions should not, however, be overlooked as the basic sources of information on requirements and restrictions concerning workmanship and materials.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) is currently considering improvements for US Highway 65 (US-65) and Iowa State Highway 330 (IA-330) in Polk and Jasper Counties, Iowa. As part of its project planning effort, IDOT is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) report which will include a section entitled "Hazardous Waste" to identify known sites in or near the proposed corridors that are, or could be, contaminated with hazardous or petroleum substances.

This Handbook has been prepared by the Iowa DOT as a guide and supplement to the MUTCD. It provides in one document a large number of illustrations which can be easily adapted to specific conditions by field personnel. It is intended to supersede all previous non-conforming standards now being used throughout the state and to provide uniform guidelines for all agencies, public and private, who must conduct construction and maintenance activities on the streets and highways of the state. The illustrations contained herein serve as a quick reference for field personnel to follow, however, no amount of detailed instructions can adequately cover every situation. For this reason, sound judgment is required in using these illustrations to cover actual field conditions.
