Objective: To describe the findings of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1-MRS) in Alzheimer`s disease (AD) and cognitive impairment, no dementia (CIND) elderly from a community-based sample. Methods: Thirteen patients with AD, 12 with CIND and 15 normal individuals were evaluated. The H-1-MRS was performed in the right temporal, left parietal and medial occipital regions studying the metabolites N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine (Cr), choline (Cho) and myoinositol (ml). The clinical diagnosis was based on standardized cognitive tests - MMSE and CAMDEX - and the results correlated with the H-1-MRS. Results: Parietal Cho was higher in control individuals and lower in CIND subjects. AD and control groups were better identified by temporal and parietal ml combined with the temporal NAA/Cr ratio. CIND was better identified by parietal Cho. Conclusion: The H-1-MRS findings confirmed the hypothesis that metabolic alterations are present since the first symptoms of cognitively impaired elderly subjects. These results suggest that combining MRS from different cerebral regions can help in the diagnosis and follow-up of community elderly individuals with memory complaints and AD. Copyright (C) 2008 S. The early identification of hearing impairment allows for an intervention still in the ""critical"" and ideal period of hearing and language stimulation. Pediatric ototoxicity is a very controversial topic. There have been variable percentages of ototoxicity cases in children with different aminoglycosides antibiotics. The main pediatric groups whom receive aminoglycosides are newborns with severe infections on the neonatal ICU. Aim: to check the functional aspect of the cochlear external hair cells and treatment regimens used to treat infections during the neonatal period. Study design: Experimental. Materials and Methods: we studied 26 albino guinea pigs, through distortion product otoacoustic emissions, before and after the use of gentamicin. Results: in all the assessments, the external hair cells functional status, studied by means of the distortion product otoacoustic emissions, proved preserved. Conclusion: In the present study, we did not notice changes in outer hair cell function in the albino guinea pigs treated with gentamicin in the doses of 4 mg/Kg/ day and 2.5 mg/Kg/day every 12 hours for 10 and 14 days.

Introduction: Bruxism is characterized by repeated tooth grinding or clenching. The condition can occur in all age ranges and in both genders, being related or not to other oral habits. Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of bruxism in children with nasal obstruction and to determine its association with other factors. Methods: Sixty children with nasal obstruction seen at the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital. of Ribeirao Preto participated in the study. The data were obtained using a pre-established questionnaire applied to the person responsible and by orofacial evaluation of the patient. The participants were divided into two groups: group with bruxism (GB) as reported by the relatives and with the presence of tooth wear detected by clinical evaluation, and group without bruxism (GWB), consisting of children with none of the two symptoms of bruxism mentioned above. Results: The presence of bruxism exceeded its absence in the sample studied (65.22%). There was no significant difference (P < 0.05) between groups regarding gender, phase of dentition, presence of hearing diseases, degree of malocclusion, or child behavior. Conclusion: Bruxism and deleterious oral habits such as biting behavior (objects, tips and nails) were significantly present, together with the absence of suction habits, in the children with nasal obstruction.
