Magnetocaloric and transport properties are reported for novel poly- and nanocrystalline double composite manganites, La 0.8Sr 0.2MnO 3/La 0.7Ca 0.3MnO 3, prepared by the sol-gel method. Magnetic field dependence of magnetic entropy change is found to be stronger for the nano- than the polycrystalline composite. The remarkable broadening of the temperature interval, where the magnetocaloric effect occurs in poly- and nanocrystalline composites, causes the relative cooling power (RCP(S)) of the nanocrystalline composite to be reduced by only 10 compared to the Sr based polycrystalline phase. The RCP(S) of the polycrystalline composite becomes remarkably enhanced. The low temperature magnetoresistance is enhanced by 5 for the nanostructured composite. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

The gold standard in surgical management of a peripheral nerve gap is currently autologous nerve grafting. This confers patient morbidity and increases surgical time therefore innovative experimental strategies towards engineering a synthetic nerve conduit are welcome. We have developed a novel synthetic conduit made of poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) that has demonstrated promising peripheral nerve regeneration in short-term studies. This material has been engineered to permit translation into clinical practice and here we demonstrate that histological outcomes in a long-term in vivo experiment are comparable with that of autologous nerve grafting. A 1cm nerve gap in a rat sciatic nerve injury model was repaired with a PCL nerve conduit or an autologous nerve graft. At 18 weeks post surgical repair, there was a similar volume of regenerating axons within the nerve autograft and PCL conduit repair groups, and similar numbers of myelinated axons in the distal stump of both groups. Furthermore, there was evidence of comparable re-innervation of end organ muscle and skin with the only significant difference the lower wet weight of the muscle from the PCL conduit nerve repair group. This study stimulates further work on the potential use of this synthetic biodegradable PCL nerve conduit in a clinical setting.

The use of changes in vibration data for damage detection of reinforced concrete structures faces many challenges that obstruct its transition from a research topic to field applications. Among these is the lack of appropriate damage models that can be deployed in the damage detection methods. In this paper, a model of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam with multiple cracks is developed to examine its use for damage detection and structural health monitoring. The cracks are simulated by a model that accounts for crack formation, propagation and closure. The beam model is studied under different dynamic excitations, including sine sweep and single excitation frequency, for various damage levels. The changes in resonant frequency with increasing loads are examined along with the nonlinear vibration characteristics. The model demonstrates that the resonant frequency reduces by about 10% at the application of 30% of the ultimate load and then drops gradually by about 25% at 70% of the ultimate load. The model also illustrates some nonlinearity in the dynamic response of damaged beams. The appearance of super-harmonics shows that the nonlinearity is higher when the damage level is about 35% and then decreases with increasing damage. The restoring force-displacement relationship predicted the reduction in the overall stiffness of the damaged beam. The model quantitatively predicts the experimental vibration behaviour of damaged RC beams and also shows the damage dependency of nonlinear vibration behaviour. © 2011 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Peripheral nerve damage is a problem encountered after trauma and during surgery and the development of synthetic polymer conduits may offer a promising alternative to autografts. In order to improve the performance of the polymer to be used for nerve conduits, poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) films were chemically functionalized with RGD moieties, using a chemical reaction previously developed. In vitro cultures of dissociated dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons provide a valid model to study different factors affecting axonal growth. In this work, DRG neurons were cultured on RGD-functionalized PCL films. Adult adipose-derived stem cells differentiated to Schwann cells (dASCs) were initially cultured on the functionalized PCL films, resulting in improved attachment and proliferation. dASCs were also co-cultured with DRG neurons on treated and untreated PCL to assess stimulation by dASCs on neurite outgrowth. Neuron response was generally poor on untreated PCL films, but long neurites were observed in the presence of dASCs or RGD moieties. A combination of the two factors enhanced even further neurite outgrowth, acting synergistically. Finally, in order to better understand the extracellular matrix (ECM)-cell interaction, a β1 integrin blocking experiment was carried out. Neurite outgrowth was not affected by the specific antibody blocking, showing that β1 integrin function can be compensated by other molecules present on the cell membrane. The results of an experimental and numerical investigation involving unstrengthened reinforced concrete (RC) T-beams and precracked RC T-beams strengthened in shear with prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps are presented and discussed. The results provide insights into the influence of load history and beam depth on the structural behavior of both unstrengthened and strengthened beams. The strengthened beams exhibited capacity enhancements of 21.6 to 46% compared to the equivalent unstrengthened beams, demonstrating the potential effectiveness of the prestressed CFRP strap system. Nonlinear finite element (FE) predictions, which incorporated the load history, reproduced the observed experimental behavior but either underestimated or overestimated the post-cracking stiffness of the beams and strap strain at higher load levels. These limitations were attributed to the concrete shear models used in the FE analyses.

The use of changes in vibration properties for global damage detection and monitoring of existing concrete structures has received great research attention in the last three decades. To track changes in vibration properties experimentally, structures have been artificially damaged by a variety of scenarios. However, this procedure does not represent realistically the whole design-life degradation of concrete structures. This paper presents experimental work on a set of damaged reinforced concrete beams due to different loading regimes to assess the sensitivity of vibration characteristics. Of the total set, three beams were subject to incremental static loading up to failure to simulate overloading, and two beams subject to 15 million loading cycles with varying amplitudes to produce an accelerated whole-life degradation scenario. To assess the vibration behaviour in both cases, swept sine and harmonic excitations were conducted at every damage level. The results show that resonant frequencies are not sensitive enough to damage due to cyclic loading, whereas cosh spectral and root mean square distances are more sensitive, yet more scattered. In addition, changes in non-linearity follow a softening trend for beams under incremental static loading, whilst they are significantly inconsistent for beams under cyclic loading. Amongst all examined characteristics, changes in modal stiffness are found to be most sensitive to damage and least scattered, but modal stiffness is tedious to compute due mainly to the difficulty of constructing restoring force surfaces from field measurements. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications.

A severe shortage of donor cornea is now an international crisis in public health. Substitutes for donor tissue need to be developed to meet the increasing demand for corneal transplantation. Current attempts in designing scaffolds for corneal tissue regeneration involve utilization of expensive materials. Yet, these corneal scaffolds still lack the highly-organized fibrous structure that functions as a load-bearing component in the native tissue. This work shows that transparent nanofiber-reinforced hydrogels could be developed from cheap, non-immunogenic and readily available natural polymers to mimic the cornea's microstructure. Electrospinning was employed to produce gelatin nanofibers, which were then infiltrated with alginate hydrogels. Introducing electrospun nanofibers into hydrogels improved their mechanical properties by nearly one order of magnitude, yielding mechanically robust composites. Such nanofiber-reinforced hydrogels could serve as alternatives to donor tissue for corneal transplantation.

Laminated glass units are traditionally used to provide a degree of post-fracture strength, but the residual strength is often limited to relatively low levels suffi cient for holding the glass fragments together for a predetermined amount of time. It is possible to achieve a higher level of residual strength, but this requires specific boundary conditions and/or opaque reinforcing materials. This paper describes the experimental investigations on laminated glass units that can provide a signifi cant degree of post-fracture resistance, without the need of boundary restraints or opaque reinforcing materials. The glass units are composed entirely of combinations of conventional transparent interlayers and commercially available glass (annealed, heat treated and chemically strengthened). The paper also describes an empirical energy based interpretation of the mechanical response of the laminated units.

Aging concrete infrastructure in developed economies and more recently constructed concrete infrastructure in the developing world are frequently found to be deficient in structural strength relative to current needs. This can be attributed to a variety of factors including deterioration, construction defects, accidental damage, changes in understanding and failure to design for future loading requirements. Strengthening existing concrete structures can be a cost and carbon effective alternative to replacement. A competitive option for the strengthening of concrete slab-on-beam structures that are deficient in shear capacity is the U-wrapping of the down-stand beam portion of the shear span with externally bonded FRP fabric. While guidance exists for the strengthening of reinforced concrete by U-wrapping, the interaction between internal steel reinforcement, concrete and external FRP in the presence of a dominant diagonal shear crack is not well understood. An approach adopted in previous work has been to explore this interaction through conventional push-off testing. In conventional push-off testing, unlike in a beam, the shear plane is parallel to the direction of loading and perpendicular to the principal fibre orientation. This paper presents a novel push-off test variation in which the shear plane is inclined at 45° to the direction of loading and the principal fibre orientation. A variety of reinforcement ratios, FRP thicknesses and FRP end conditions are modelled. The implications of inclined cracking on debonding of FRP are investigated. The suitability and relevance of inclined push-off tests for further work in this area is also assessed. © 2013, NetComposite Limited.
