An improved aqueous impregnation method was used to prepare 40 wt% Pt/C electrocatalysts. TEM analysis of the samples showed that the Pt particles impregnated for a short time have a very narrow size distribution in the range of 1-4 nm with an average size of 2.6 nm. UV-vis spectroscopy measurements verified that the redox reaction between PtCl62- and formaldehyde took place with a slow rate at ambient temperature via a two-step reaction path, where PtCl42- serves as an intermediate. The use of the short-time-impregnated 40 wt% Pt/C as cathode electrocatalysts in direct methanol fuel cells yields better performance than that of commercial 40 wt% Pt/C electrocatalyst. Experimental evidence provides clues for the fundamental understanding of elementary steps of the redox reactions, which helps in guiding the design and preparation of highly dispersed Pt catalyst for fuel cells.

Catalytic activity of Pt catalysts for soot oxidation was studied using temperature programmed reactions. The activity of Pt loaded over TiO2-SiO2 (Pt/TiO2-SiO2) showed higher activity than other Pt/MOx systems (MOx = TiO2, ZrO2, SiO2, Al2O3. TiO2-ZrO2. TiO2-Al2O3, ZrO2-SiO2, ZrO2-Al2O3, SiO2-Al2O3). The activity was highest when the molar ratio of TiO2/(TiO2 + SiO2) ranged from 0.4 to 0.7. The effect of pretreatment with a gas containing low SO2 concentrations on the activity was compared for Pt/SiO2, Pt/TiO2 and Pt/TiO2-SiO2. In the case of Pt/TiO2-SiO2, the activity was markedly promoted by the pretreatment whereas no variation in the activity was observed for Pt/SiO2. The difference in the behavior towards the SO, pretreatment was attributed to property difference in the supports for sulfate accumulation. The high activity of Pt/TiO2-SiO2 was also confirmed under practical conditions with a diesel engine exhaust using a catalyst-supported diesel particulate filter (DPF). (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Y2Ta2O5N2 is presented as a novel photocatalyst with high activity for water splitting under visible-light irradiation in the presence of appropriate sacrificial reagents; the activity for reduction to H-2 is increased by the incorporation of Pt or Ru as a co-catalyst, with a significant increase in production efficiency when both Pt and Ru are present.

This article reports on the performance of a bismuth-coated carbon microdisk electrode (BiFμE) for the determination of trace heavy metals by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The BiFμE was prepared by electrodeposition of a metallic bismuth film onto the microdisk, by applying an in-situ electroplating procedure. To test the performance of the BiFμE, ASV measurements were performed on synthetic solutions containing Cd2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+ as target ions. The results indicated that cadmium and lead gave well-defined ASV peaks with no interference, and their quantitative determination could be carried out straightforwardly. In particular, linear calibration curves over the range 5.0 x 10-8-1.0 x 10-6M for both ions, and detection limits of 7.8 and 2.9 nM, for cadmium and lead, respectively, after applying a 60 sec preconcentration step, were obtained. The reproducibility was also satisfactory, the relative standard deviation (RSD) being within 2.5% for both ions. Copper, instead, gave an ASV response that. in most experimental conditions, overlapped with that of bismuth. This circumstance made the determination of copper at the BiFμE difficult. Since the latter element could be detected reliably at the uncoated carbon microdisk electrode (CμE), both BiFμE and CμE were employed, respectively, for the determination of lead and copper ions in drinking water, wine, and tomato sauce.

This is a review of electrodes based on nontoxic solid amalgams (MeSAE) (prepared by amalgamation of soft metal powders) in connection with some other kinds of voltammetric electrodes is given. Information is summarized on various types of MeSAEs (esp. AgSAE, CuSAE, AuSAE), pretreatment of their surfaces, their hydrogen overvoltage in aqueous solutions, conditions for their testing, electroanalytical parameters and use, in compared with the hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). Although the solid amalgam electrodes do not reach the quality of the HMDE, in many cases they represent its possible alternative. The broad range of voltammetric applications of the MeSAEs, especially of the AgSAEs, their good mechanical stability, simple handling, and new aspects of their use in electrochemical techniques are documented by numerous examples.
