All too often young people are excluded in practice from the general policy and professional consensus that partnership and participation should underpin work with children, young people and their families. If working with troubled and troublesome young people is to be based on family support, it will require not only the clear statement of that policy but also demonstration that it can be applied in practice. Achieving that involves setting out a plausible theory of change that can be rigorously evaluated. This paper suggests a conceptual model that draws on social support theory to harness the ideas of social capital and resilience in a way that can link formal family support interventions to adolescent coping. Research with young people attending three community-based projects for marginalized youth is used to illustrate how validated tools can be used to measure and document the detail of support, resilience, social capital and coping in young people's lives. It is also suggested that there is sufficient fit between the findings emerging from the study and the model to justify the model being more rigorously tested.

In this paper, a complete method for finite-difference time-domain modeling of rooms in 2-D using compact explicit schemes is presented. A family of interpolated schemes using a rectilinear, nonstaggered grid is reviewed, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes are identified. Frequency-dependent boundaries are modeled using a digital impedance filter formulation that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory. A structurally stable and efficient boundary formulation is constructed by carefully combining the boundary condition with the interpolated scheme. An analytic prediction formula for the effective numerical reflectance is given, and a stability proof provided. The results indicate that the identified accurate and isotropic schemes are also very accurate in terms of numerical boundary reflectance, and outperform directly related methods such as Yee's scheme and the standard digital waveguide mesh. In addition, one particular scheme-referred to here as the interpolated wideband scheme-is suggested as the best scheme for most applications.

This paper presents methods for simulating room acoustics using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique, focusing on boundary and medium modeling. A family of nonstaggered 3-D compact explicit FDTD schemes is analyzed in terms of stability, accuracy, and computational efficiency, and the most accurate and isotropic schemes based on a rectilinear grid are identified. A frequency-dependent boundary model that is consistent with locally reacting surface theory is also presented, in which the wall impedance is represented with a digital filter. For boundaries, accuracy in numerical reflection is analyzed and a stability proof is provided. The results indicate that the proposed 3-D interpolated wideband and isotropic schemes outperform directly related techniques based on Yee's staggered grid and standard digital waveguide mesh, and that the boundary formulations generally have properties that are similar to that of the basic scheme used.

In this paper we report an empirical study of the photographic portrayal of family members at home. Adopting a social psychological approach and focusing oil intergenerational power dynamics, our research explores the use of domestic photo displays in family representation. Parents and their teenagers from eight families in the south of England were interviewed at home about their interpretations of both stored and displayed photos within the home. Discussions centred on particular photographs found by the participants to portray self and family in different ways. The findings show that public displays of digital photos are still curated by mothers of the households, but with more difficulty and less control all with analogue photos. In addition, teenagers both contribute and comply with this curation within the home, whilst at the same time developing additional ways of presenting their families and themselves online that are 'unsupervised' by the curator. We highlight the conflict of interest that is at play within teen and parent practices and consider the challenges that this presents for supporting the representation of family through the design of photo display technology. The inhibitor profiling of the caspase family of proteases using substrate-derived peptide glyoxals.

A series of substrate-based a-keto-ß-aldehyde (glyoxal) sequences have been synthesised and evaluated as inhibitors of the caspase family of cysteine proteases. A number of potent inhibitor sequences have been identified. For example, a palmitic acid containing sequence pal-Tyr-Val-Ala-Asp-glyoxal was demonstrated to be an extremely effective inhibitor of caspase-1, inhibiting not only the action of the protease against synthetic fluorogenic substrates (Ki = 0.3 nM) but also blocking its processing of pro-interleukin-1beta (pro-IL-1ß). In addition, the peptide Ac-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-glyoxal, which is based on the consensus cleavage sequence for caspase-3, is a potent inhibitor of this protease (Ki = 0.26 nM) yet only functions as a comparatively modest inhibitor of caspase-1 (Ki = 451 nM). Potent inhibitor sequences were also identified for caspases-6 and -8. However, the degree of discrimination between the family members is limited. The ability of Ac-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-glyoxal to block caspase-3 like activity in whole cells and to delay the development of apoptosis was assessed. When tested against caspase-3 like activity in cell lysates, Ac-Asp-Glu-Val-Asp-glyoxal displayed effective inhibition similar to that observed against recombinant caspase-3. Treatment of whole cells with this potent caspase-3 inhibitor was however, not sufficient to significantly stall the development of apoptosis in-vitro.
Psychological and social profile of family caregivers upon commencement of palliative care provision

Context
Palliative care services are required to support patients who have advanced, life-threatening, noncurable disease, and their family caregivers. Comprehensive psychological and social support for bereaved family members also is expected. However, recent systematic reviews have demonstrated significant gaps in evidence-based approaches for such support. Furthermore, a comprehensive understanding of the psychological and social response to the family caregiver role is required for support to be optimized.
Objectives
We sought to examine the psychological and social profile of family caregivers on commencement of receiving palliative care services.
Methods
A self-report questionnaire was administered to primary family caregivers of patients within two weeks of admission to three palliative care services in Melbourne, Australia. The questionnaire incorporated six instruments that measured 11 family caregiver-related psychosocial factors; four instruments that measured caregiver psychological distress factors; 14 mental health lifetime risk factors; and a sociodemographic questionnaire.
Results
Three hundred and two family caregivers participated. Nearly half (44%) of the caregivers had a probable anxiety and/or depressive disorder, with 40% scoring more than the cutoff score for probable anxiety and 20% scoring more than the cutoff score for probable depression. Additionally, approximately 15% of caregivers met the criteria for pre-loss grief, and around 10% reported moderate to severe levels of demoralization. Caregivers who had a probable anxiety and/or depressive disorder also reported higher levels of pre-loss grief.
Conclusion
This study provides further evidence of the prevalence of poor psychosocial well-being in this population. The results reinforce the need to develop suitable strategies for psychological and social support for family caregivers.

Azaspiracids are a class of recently discovered algae-derived shellfish toxins. Their distribution globally is on the increase with mussels being most widely implicated in azaspiracid-related food poisoning events. Evidence that these toxins were bound to proteins in contaminated mussels has been shown recently. In the present study characterization of these proteins in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, was achieved using a range of advanced proteomics tools. Four proteins present only in the hepatopancreas of toxin-contaminated mussels sharing identity or homology with cathepsin D, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase Pi, and a bacterial flagellar protein have been characterized. Several of the proteins are known to be involved in self-defense mechanisms against xenobiotics or up-regulated in the presence of carcinogenic agents. These findings would suggest that azaspiracids should now be considered and evaluated as potential tumorigenic compounds. The presence of a bacterial protein only in contaminated mussels was an unexpected finding and requires further investigation. The proteins identified in this study should assist with development of urgently required processes for the rapid depuration of azaspiracid-contaminated shellfish. Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are complex photosynthetic organisms with a very different evolutionary history to green plants, to which they are only distantly related(1). These seaweeds are the dominant species in rocky coastal ecosystems and they exhibit many interesting adaptations to these, often harsh, environments. Brown algae are also one of only a small number of eukaryotic lineages that have evolved complex multicellularity (Fig. 1). We report the 214 million base pair (Mbp) genome sequence of the filamentous seaweed Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye, a model organism for brown algae(2-5), closely related to the kelps(6,7) (Fig. 1). Genome features such as the presence of an extended set of light-harvesting and pigment biosynthesis genes and new metabolic processes such as halide metabolism help explain the ability of this organism to cope with the highly variable tidal environment. The evolution of multicellularity in this lineage is correlated with the presence of a rich array of signal transduction genes. Of particular interest is the presence of a family of receptor kinases, as the independent evolution of related molecules has been linked with the emergence of multicellularity in both the animal and green plant lineages. The Ectocarpus genome sequence represents an important step towards developing this organism as a model species, providing the possibility to combine genomic and genetic(2) approaches to explore these and other(4,5) aspects of brown algal biology further.
