Antimony doped tin oxide thin films were deposited on glass by a chemical route derived from Pechini method. Particular emphasis was given to the microstructure of crystallized films. Crystalline phase formation was studied by grazing incident X-ray diffraction and by thermal analyses. Scanning electron microscopy was carried out for microstructure characterization, surface roughness was observed using scanning tunneling microscope and the optical transmittance measurements were performed in the wavelength range of 200-800 nm. Although it is generally accepted that osteoclasts breakdown and resorb bone matrix, the possibility that they may also be able to engulf apoptotic osteoblasts/ lining cells and/or osteocytes remains controversial. Apoptosis of osteoblasts/ lining cells and/or osteocytes and interactions between these cells and osteoclasts are extremely rapid events that are difficult to observe in viva. A suitable in viva model for studying these events is the alveolar bone of young rats because it is continuously. Thus, sections of aldehyde fixed alveolar undergoing intense resorption/remodeling bone of young rats were stained by the combined terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method and the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) method for the simultaneous visualization of apoptotic cells and osteoclasts in the same section. The combined TUNEL and TRAP reactions, in the same section, greatly facilitated visualization of relationship between osteoclasts and apoptotic bone cells during alveolar bone remodeling. Our results showed that several TRAP-positive osteoclasts exhibited large vacuoles containing TUNEL positive apoptotic structures, probably derived from osteoblasts/lining cells and/or osteocytes. These results support the idea that alveolar bone osteoclasts are able to internalize dying apoptotic bone cells.

Starches from six different species (cassava, arrowroot, sweet potato, yam, canna and ginger) were isolated and some structural and physicochemical characteristics analysed and correlated. Phosphorous and amylose contents were determined using a colorimetric method and measuring iodine affinity, respectively. Molecular weight distributions of starches were analysed by Sepharose CL 2B. Granular shape and size distribution were performed using an image analyser system attached to a light microscope. Swelling power was determined at 60, 70, 80 and 90 degrees C. Pasting and thermal properties were measured using a rapid viscoanalyser, and a differential scanning calorimeter, respectively. Phosphorous content varied from 0.007 to 0.031% for cassava and canna starches, respectively. Yam, canna and ginger starches displayed higher amylose contents (32.6, 31.7 and 26.5%, respectively) than cassava, arrowroot and sweet potato starches (19.8, 20.8 and 22.6%, respectively). These last three starches displayed amylose molecules of higher molecular weight than those shown for yam, canna and ginger starches. Canna starch showed higher proportions of longer branch chains of amylopectin than others starches. The size and shape of granules were quite variable among all starches and the average size of granules varied from 13.9 to 42.3 mu m for sweet potato and canna, respectively. Swelling power, pasting, and thermal properties were affected by structural characteristics of the starches.

An analytical method for the determination of aldicarb, and its two major metabolites, aldicarb sulfoxide and aldicarb sulfone in fruits and vegetables is described. Briefly the method consisted of the use of a methanolic extraction, liquid-liquid extraction followed by solid-phase extraction clean-up. Afterwards, the final extract is analyzed by liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS). The specific fragment ion corresponding to [M-74](+) and the protonated molecular [M+K](+) ion were used for the unequivocal determination of aldicarb and its two major metabolites. The analytical performance of the proposed method and the results achieved were compared with those obtained using the common analytical method involving LC with post-column fluorescence detection (FL). The limits of detection varied between 0.2 and 1.3 ng but under LC-FL were slightly lower than when using LC-APCI-MS. However both methods permitted one to achieve the desired sensitivity for analyzing aldicarb and its metabolites in vegetables. The method developed in this work was applied to the trace determination of aldicarb and its metabolites in crop and orange extracts. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Four groups of horses of Brasileiro de Hipismo bred were submitted to fasting for 24 and 48 hours in order to study the absorption capacity of the small intestine. Two groups were fed with coast cross grass (Cynodon dactylon) and the other two groups with coast cross pasture and grains. At the end of the fasting periods, the groups received 1g of glucose/kg of body weight in a 20% solution through a nasogastric tube. Blood samples were collected immediately before and 70, 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 360 minutes after glucose administration. Glycemia was determined by the orthotoluidine method and insulin by radioimmunoassay. The animals which received grains showed larger increase in glycemia and insulinemia than those maintained on pasture regimen alone. The 48-hour fasting period induced higher glycemia and insulinemia levels than those observed after 24-hour fasting.

Structural morphological studies in pure and Ce-doped tin dioxide nanoparticles with high stability against particle growth were performed in samples, obtained using the polymeric precursor method and prepared at different annealing temperatures. A Ce-rich surface layer was used to control the particle size and stabilize SnO2 against particle growth. The formation of this segregated layer can contribute to a decreased surface energy, acting in the driving force, or reducing the surface mobility. Only the cassiterite SnO2 phase was observed below 1000 degreesC and a secondary phase (CeO2) was observed for the Ce-doped SnO2 at temperatures higher than 1000 degreesC, when de-mixing process occurs. The evolution of crystallite size, microstrain and morphology of the nanoparticles with annealing temperatures was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), associated to Rietveld refinements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Zn7Sb2O12 is known to adopt an inverse spinel crystal structure, in which Zn2+ occupies the eight tetrahedral positions and Sb5+ and Zn2+ randomly occupy the 16 octahedral positions. Samples of Zn7-xNixSb2O12 (X = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) were synthesized using a modified polymeric precursor method, known as the Pechini method. The crystal structure of the powders was characterized by Rietveld refinement with X-ray diffraction data. The results show that for X = 0, 1, and 2 Ni substitutes for Zn2+ in the octahedral sites, and that for X = 3 and 4 it is assumed that Ni2+ replaces Zn2+ ions in both the octahedral and tetrahedral positions. It is also observed for x = 3 and 4 the formation of two spinel phases. (C) 2003 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

This work reports the preparation and characterization of (SnO2) thin films doped with 7 mol% Sb2O3. The films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method, and deposited by spin-coating, all of them were deposited on amorphous silica substrate. Then, we have studied the thickness effect on the microstrutural, optical and electric properties of these samples. The microstructural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The electrical resistivity measurements were obtained by the van der Pauw four-probe method. UV-visible spectroscopy and ellipsometry were carried out for the optical characterization. The films present nanometric grains in the order of 13 nm, and low roughness. The electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of the film thickness and the smallest measured value was 6.5 x 10(-3) Omega cm for the 988 nm thick film. The samples displayed a high transmittance value of 80% in the visible region. The obtained results show that the polymeric precursor method is effective for the TCOs manufacturing.
