A study to optimise the temporal drive pulse structure for efficient XUV lasing on the J=0-1, 19.6 nm line of Ge XXIII

Short pulses of 100 ps FWHM duration at 1.06 mu m wavelength are used as the pump source for driving the J = 0-1, 19.6 nm, Ne-like germanium X-ray laser. Different combinations of short pulses are investigated and quantitatively compared. Configurations investigated include a single pulse, double pulses at 400 ps and 800 ps separation, single pulses with prepulses and double pulses with prepulses. Data are presented in the form of integrated energy measurements, and supported by modelling. The most efficient short pulse configurations are shown to be orders of magnitude more effective than pumping with nanosecond duration pulses. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

A time-resolved spectroscopy study of the resonance-line emission in the Ge XXIII XUV laser

A comparison is presented of the temporally resolved resonance-line emission from the Ne-like Ge XUV laser (pumped with nanosecond pulses) with the predictions for the same emission from the hydro-atomic code EHYBRID. The specific lines chosen were the two 3s-2p Ne-like lines at 10.01 and 9.762 Angstrom, and the 3s-2p F-like group of lines in the 9.4-9.6 Angstrom region. Modification of the code to include 112 excited levels of the F-like ion facilitated a direct comparison between experiment and model of (i) the temporal variation of the emissions and (ii) the variation of the peak intensity ratios of the F-like to Ne-like emissions with irradiance on target.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF LINE INTENSITY RATIO AS A DIAGNOSTIC OF RECOMBINING PLASMAS

Double slits have been incorporated in a flat field spectrometer to record spatially resolved and integrated spectra simultaneously. Variation of the absorbed irradiance and ionisation stage along the fibre plasmas has been monitored. By comparison of the spatially resolved and integrated resonance line ratios, it is found that the spatially integrated values deviated significantly from the real experimental circumstances due to nonuniformity along the plasmas.

MEASUREMENT OF THE PHOTO-PUMP STRENGTH OF THE 3D-5F TRANSITIONS IN THE AUTOMATICALLY LINE MATCHED NI-LIKE SM PHOTOPUMPED X-RAY LASER

The photo-pump strengths of both the ((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(6))(0))(0)-(((3 (d) over bar(3))(3/2)(3d(6))(0))(3/2)(5 (f) over bar)(5/2))(1) and the ((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(6))0)0-(((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(5))(5/2))(5/2)(5f)(7/2))(1) transitions in Ni-like Sm34+ have been measured to be 2.0 x 10(-4) and 2.4 x 10(-4) photons/mode respectively. The implications of the measurement are briefly discussed in a comparison of the merits of automatically line matched photo-pump scheme to those of the collisional excitation Ni-like Sm+34 scheme.

Extreme ultraviolet line emission at 24.7 nm from Li-like nitrogen plasma produced by a short KrF excimer laser pulse

Recently using KrF high power laser (248 nm; 350 fs; 5.0x10(16) W/cm(2)) in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory an experimental search for recombination extreme ultraviolet (XUV) laser action in Li-like nitrogen ions was performed. To understand the experimental results of line emission at 24.7 nm in the 3d(5/2)-2p(3/2) transition of the Li-like nitrogen ion a simulation was undertaken using a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrodynamic code. From the simulation results, we confirmed that there was nonlinear dependence of spectral line emission on the gas density which was well matched to the experimental results. Only a six times increase of the 24.7 nm emission intensity was obtained when the plasma length was increased 1000 times from 1 mu m as an optically thin case to 1 mm. Also, the spatial profile of the electron density and temperature was obtained and the electron temperature was about 40-50 eV which was too high for the optical field ionization x-ray lasing. Sequence characterisation and expression of homeobox HOX A7 in the multi-potential erythroleukaemic cell line TF-1

Homeobox gene expression was examined in the erythroleukaemic cell line TF-1. Expression of a number of HOX A, B and C genes, including HOX A7 was detected. Expression of this gene has not previously been reported in erythroleukaemic cell lines. A 2.1 kb full length cDNA of the HOX A7 gene was cloned. The predicted amino acid sequence C-terminal to the homeodomain consists of an alanine-rich region and a strongly negatively charged domain consisting entirely of aspartic and glutamic acid residues.

Measurement and modelling of perceived slant in surfaces represented by freely viewed line drawings

Simple pictures under everyday viewing conditions evoke impressions of surfaces oriented in depth. These impressions have been studied by measuring the slants of perceived surfaces, with probes (rotating arrowheads) designed to respect the distinctive character of depicted scenes. Converging arguments indicated that the perceived orientation of the probes was near theoretical values. A series of experiments showed that subjects formed well-defined impressions of depicted surface orientation. The literature suggests that perceived objects might be flattened', but that was not the general rule. Instead, both mean slant and uncertainty fitted models in which slant estimates are derived in a relatively straightforward way from local relations in the picture. Simplifying pictures tended to make orientation estimates less certain, particularly away from the natural anchor points (vertical and horizontal). The shape of the object affected all aspects of the observed-object/percept relationship. Individual differences were large, and suggest that different individuals used different relationships as a basis for their estimates. Overall, data suggest that everyday picture perception is strongly selective and weakly integrative. In particular, depicted slant is estimated by finding a picture feature which will be strongly related to it if the object contains a particular regularity, not by additive integration of evidence from multiple directly and indirectly relevant sources.

Variation among nonclinical subjects on a line-bisection task

Absence of leftward bias in a line bisection task is often used as a clinical hemispheric indicator, but the effect is not uniform in a normal population. Sex, handedness, and strategy variables affect the strength and direction of any bias.
