In this paper we shall discuss the use of the TSIM simulation software for modelling large-scale industrial processes. The discussion draws on our recent experience of modelling a large plant in the food-processing industry. We shall focus on those features of software organization and software engineering which proved to be particularly necessary for the execution of this project, and illustrate the extent to which the use of TISM facilitated the implementation of these features. We shall also make some general remarks about the 'life-cycle' of models resulting from projects of this kind.

The paper describes the architecture of VODIS, a voice operated database inquiry system, and presents some experiments which investigate the effects on performance of varying the level of a priori syntactic constraints. The VODIS system includes a novel mechanism for incorporating context-free grammatical constraints directly into the word recognition algorithm. This allows the degree of a priori constraint to be smoothly varied and provides for the controlled generation of multiple alternatives. The results show that when the spoken input deviates from the predefined task grammar, a combination of weak a priori syntax rules in conjunction with full a posteriori parsing on a lattice of alternative word matches provides the most robust recognition performance. © 1991.

In the field of flat panel displays, the current leading technology is the Active Matrix liquid Crystal Display; this uses a-Si:H based thin film transistors (TFTs) as the switching element in each pixel. However, under gate bias a-Si:H TFTs suffer from instability, as is evidenced by a shift in the gate threshold voltage. The shift in the gate threshold voltage is generally measured from the gate transfer characteristics, after subjecting the TFT to prolonged gate bias. However, a major drawback of this measurement method is that it cannot distinguish whether the shift is caused by the change in the midgap states in the a-Si:H channel or by charge trapping in the gate insulator. In view of this, we have developed a capacitance-voltage (C-V) method to measure the shift in threshold voltage. We employ Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor (MIS) structures to investigate the threshold voltage shift as they are simpler to fabricate than TFTs. We have investigated a large of number Metal/a-Si:H/Si3N4/Si+n structures using our C-V technique. From, the C-V data for the MIS structures, we have found that the relationship between the thermal energy and threshold voltage shift is similar to that reported by Wehrspohn et. al in a-Si:H TFTs (J Appl. Phys, 144, 87, 2000). The a-Si:H and Si3N4 layers were grown using the radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique.

In this paper, a Decimative Spectral estimation method based on Eigenanalysis and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) is presented and applied to speech signals in order to estimate Formant/Bandwidth values. The underlying model decomposes a signal into complex damped sinusoids. The algorithm is applied not only on speech samples but on a small amount of the autocorrelation coefficients of a speech frame as well, for finer estimation. Correct estimation of Formant/Bandwidth values depend on the model order thus, the requested number of poles. Overall, experimentation results indicate that the proposed methodology successfully estimates formant trajectories and their respective bandwidths.

The penaeid prawns of Sri Lanka from estuaries and sea are an important commercial fishery resource. This resource has been exploited over the last century or more by local fishermen using indigenous fishing gear from locally sail-driven or oar-driven fishing crafts. In more recent times, the Fisheries Research Division of the Department of Fisheries undertook surveys of the seas and lagoons of Sri Lanka with a view to ascertain whether any unexploited resources of prawns existed. These publications deal with the species composition, biology, distribution and abundance in the lagoons and inshore waters of Sri Lanka.

This paper describes the use of fibre optic sensing with Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (BOTDR) for near-continuous (distributed) strain monitoring of a large diameter pipeline, buried in predominantly granular material, subjected to a pipe jack tunnelling operation in London Clay. The pipeline, buried at shallow depth, comprises 4.6 m long sections connected with standard bell and spigot type joints, which connect to a continuous steel pipeline. In this paper the suitability of fibre optic sensing with BOTDR for monitoring pipeline behaviour is illustrated. The ability of the fibre optic sensor to detect local strain changes at joints and the subsequent impact on the overall strain profile is shown. The BOTDR strain profile was also used to infer pipe settlement through a process of double-integration and was compared to pipe settlement measurements. The close approximation of the measured pipe settlement provides further confidence in fibre optic strain sensing with BOTDR to investigate the intricacies of pipeline behaviour, pipe-soil interaction and interaction between pipe sections when subjected to ground movement. Holothurians, belonging to the species Holothuria scabra, have been collected by diver-fishermen and processed for export. There is an active fishery for these animals in Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. The absence of standardized method of grading has led to unwarranted variation in sale prices and sometimes in loss of foreign exchange in Sri Lanka. In this paper an attempt is made to present a method to grade processed beche-de-mer by using the lenght-weight relationship.

Salinity, temperature and pressure are parameters which govern the oceanographic state of a marine water body and together they make up density of seawater. In this contribution we will focus our interest on one of these parameters, the salinity: accuracy in relation to different purposes as well as observation technique and instrumentation. We will also discuss the definition of salinity. For example most of the Indian Ocean waters are within the salinity range from 34.60-34.80, which emphasize the importance of careful observations and clear definitions of salinity, in such a way that it is possible to define water masses and predict their movements. In coastal waters the salinity usually features much larger variation in time and space and thus less accuracy is sometimes needed. Salinity has been measured and defined in several ways over the past century. While early measurements were based on the amount of salt in a sea water sample, today the salinity of seawater is most often determined from its conductivity. As conductivity is a function of salinity and temperature, determination involves also measurement of the density of seawater is now more precisely estimated and thus the temperature. As a result of this method the Practical Salinity Scale (PSS) was developed. The best determination of salinity from conductivity and the temperature measurements gives salinity with resolution of 0.001 psu, while the accuracy of titration method was about ± 0.02‰. Because of that, even calculation of movements in the ocean is also improved.

The software package Dymola, which implements the new, vendor-independent standard modelling language Modelica, exemplifies the emerging generation of object-oriented modelling and simulation tools. This paper shows how, in addition to its simulation capabilities, it may be used as an embodiment design tool, to size automatically a design assembled from a library of generic parametric components. The example used is a miniature model aircraft diesel engine. To this end, the component classes contain extra algebraic equations calculating the overload factor (or its reciprocal, the safety factor) for all the different modes of failure, such as buckling or tensile yield. Thus the simulation results contain the maximum overload or minimum safety factor for each failure mode along with the critical instant and the device state at which it occurs. The Dymola "Initial Conditions Calculation" function, controlled by a simple software script, may then be used to perform automatic component sizing. Each component is minimised in mass, subject to a chosen safety factor against failure, over a given operating cycle. Whilst the example is in the realm of mechanical design, it must be emphasised that the approach is equally applicable to the electrical or mechatronic domains, indeed to any design problem requiring numerical constraint satisfaction.

Three different types of culture media: (i) 100% brine (B 100 ), (ii) 75% brine and 25% crude salt (B 75 CS 25 ), and 50% brine and 50% crude salt (B 50 CS 50) were tested to evaluate the possible use of brackish water reconstituted from the crude salt for the production of M. rosenbergii post-larvae. The production rate of 25.26±0.20 PI/l with a corresponding survival rate of 84.20±0.66% was significantly higher (P<0.05) for the larvae reared on B100 than that of 22.10±0.57 Pl/l with a corresponding survival rate of 73.68±1.89% on B50CS50. Larvae cultured on B75CS25 did not show any significant difference (P<0.05) in production as well as in survival of post-larvae than that on B100. The result shows that, for rearing of prawn larvae, use of brine can be replaced up to 25% without any undue reduction in production of post-larvae. However, the production as well as survival rate of post-larvae with 50% replacement (B50CS50) is also appreciable. It is assumed that the mineral constituents of natural seawater might have some triggering effects on prawn larvae in closing their larval cycle.

Genetic structure of hatchery population of Thai pangas (Pangasius hypophthalmus) of Jessore region, Bangladesh has been investigated from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2004. Samples for this study were collected from five fish hatcheries viz. Asrom, Banchte Shekha, Chowdhury, Maola and Rezaul Haque. The enzymes were encoded by 15 gene loci: Adh-1*, Est-1*, G3pdh-2*, Gpi-1*, Gpi-2*, Idhp-1*, Idhp-2*, Ldh-1*, Ldh-2*, Mdh-1*, Mdh-2*, Pgm*, Sdh-1*, Sdh-2* and Sod*. Among them four (Est-1*, G3pdh-2*, Gpi-2*and Pgm*) were found to be polymorphic in different populations but only Gpi-2* was polymorphic in all the sampled populations. The mean proportion of polymorphic loci per population was the highest (26.7%) in Banchte Shekha hatchery while the mean proportion of heterozygous loci was 13.33% per individual in Banchte Shekha and Maola hatcheries. The UPGMA dendrogram of Nei's (1972) genetic distances indicated a relationship between the genetic distance and geographical difference. High genetic variability in stocks of Thai pangas was observed in the Banchte Shekha and Maola hatcheries and less variability was found in the other three hatcheries.

Experiments with drift gill net with under-water lights were carried out in the sea and estuarine region along with a control net of the same specifications without any light in the same fishing ground for comparison. The experimental net caught more fish in number and weight than the control. Fishes like pomfrets (Pampus chinensis, Parastromafeus niger), seer (Scomberomorus spp), hilsa (Ilisha spp) etc showed positive phototaxis and were gilled encircling the point of illumination. Young skates (Mobula spp) and Polynemus tetradactylus were antiphototactic. The number of fishes caught increased with increase in period of illumination. The catch of larger fishes was maximum at 60 mts of illumination and the total catch increased with increase in intensity of light. Additional cost of operation with under-water light was Rs 1-25 per hr but the catch was 4 to 5 times greater than that of the control net.

Effect of incorporating chlorotetracycline (CTC) in ice up to 5 ppm level on the keeping quality of prawns has been studied. A shelf life extension by nearly six days is obtained for the CTC-iced sample over the control. The headless prawns absorbed greater amounts of CTC than whole prawns during storage in CTC-ice. Traces of the antibiotic are found in the muscle of the CTC-iced prawns even after cooking for one hour. The cause of destruction of CTC when used for prawn preservation is discussed.
