The study on the thermal performance of the air-conditioned buildings of the new research centre of the Brazilian Petroleum Company, in the tropical climate of Rio de Janeiro, was part of a bigger research and consultancy, project involving environmental issues. The architectural design was the subject of a national competition in 2004, encompassing over 100,000 m(2). According to the design brief, out of the 10 buildings of the new research centre, 7 have to be either completely or partially air-conditioned, due to specific occupation requirements. The challenge for better thermal performance was related to systems` energy efficiency, to the introduction of natural ventilation and to the notion of adaptive comfort, which were verified with the support of thermal dynamic simulations. At the early stages of the assessments, the potential for natural ventilation in the working spaces considering the mixed-mode strategy achieved 30% of occupation hours. However, the development of the design project led to fully air-conditioned working spaces, due to users` references regarding the conventional culture of the office environment. Nevertheless, the overall architectural approach in accordance to the climatic conditions still showed a contribution to the buildings` energy efficiency. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Some motor tasks can be completed, quite literally, with our eyes shut. Most people can touch their nose without looking or reach for an object after only a brief glance at its location. This distinction leads to one of the defining questions of movement control: is information gleaned prior to starting the movement sufficient to complete the task (open loop), or is feedback about the progress of the movement required (closed loop)? One task that has commanded considerable interest in the literature over the years is that of steering a vehicle, in particular lane-correction and lane-changing tasks. Recent work has suggested that this type of task can proceed in a fundamentally open loop manner [1 and 2], with feedback mainly serving to correct minor, accumulating errors. This paper reevaluates the conclusions of these studies by conducting a new set of experiments in a driving simulator. We demonstrate that, in fact, drivers rely on regular visual feedback, even during the well-practiced steering task of lane changing. Without feedback, drivers fail to initiate the return phase of the maneuver, resulting in systematic errors in final heading. The results provide new insight into the control of vehicle heading, suggesting that drivers employ a simple policy of “turn and see,” with only limited understanding of the relationship between steering angle and vehicle heading.

Background. Previous works showed potentially beneficial effects of a single session of peripheral nerve sensory stimulation (PSS) on motor function of a paretic hand in patients with subacute and chronic stroke. Objective. To investigate the influence of the use of different stimulus intensities over multiple sessions (repetitive PSS [RPSS]) paired with motor training. Methods. To address this question, 22 patients were randomized within the second month after a single hemispheric stroke in a parallel design to application of 2-hour RPSS at 1 of 2 stimulus intensities immediately preceding motor training, 3 times a week, for 1 month. Jebsen-Taylor test (JTT, primary endpoint measure), pinch force, Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and corticomotor excitability to transcranial magnetic stimulation were measured before and after the end of the treatment month. JTT, FIM scores, and pinch force were reevaluated 2 to 3 months after the end of the treatment. Results. Baseline motor function tests were comparable across the 2 RPSS intensity groups. JTT improved significantly in the lower intensity RPSS group but not in the higher intensity RPSS group at month 1. This difference between the 2 groups reduced by months 2 to 3. Conclusions. These results indicate that multiple sessions of RPSS could facilitate training effects on motor function after subacute stroke depending on the intensity of stimulation. It is proposed that careful dose-response studies are needed to optimize parameters of RPSS stimulation before designing costly, larger, double-blind, multicenter clinical trials.

Motor unit action potentials (MUAPs) evoked by repetitive, low-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation can be modeled as a Poisson process. A mathematical consequence of such a model is that the ratio of the variance to the mean of the amplitudes of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) should provide an estimate of the mean size of the individual MUAPs that summate to generate each MEP. We found that this is, in fact, the case. Our finding thus supports the use of the Poisson distribution to model MEP generation and indicates that this model enables characterization of the motor unit population that contributes to near-threshold MEPs. There remains a lack of solid evidence showing whether transcranial stimulation with weak alternating current (transcranial alternating current stimulation, tACS) can in fact induce significant neurophysiological effects. Previously, a study in which tACS was applied for 2 and 5 min with current density = 0.16-0.25 A/m(2) was unable to show robust effects on cortical excitability. Here we applied tACS at a significantly higher current density (0.80 A/m(2)) for a considerably longer duration (20 min) and were indeed able to demonstrate measurable changes to cortical excitability. Our results show that active 15 Hz tACS of the motor cortex (electrodes placed at C3 and C4) significantly diminished the amplitude of motor evoked potentials and decreased intracortical facilitation (ICF) as compared to baseline and sham stimulation. In addition, we show that our method of sham tACS is a reliable control condition. These results support the notion that AC stimulation with weak currents can induce significant changes in brain excitability; in this case, 15 Hz tACS led to a pattern of inhibition of cortical excitability. We propose that tACS may have a dampening effect on cortical networks and perhaps interfere with the temporal and spatial summation of weak subthreshold electric potentials. Background The epidemiology of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder in the community is largely unknown. Aims To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of rapid cycling and non-rapid-cycling bipolar disorder in a large cross-national community sample. Method The Composite International Diagnostic interview (CIDI version 3.0) was used to examine the prevalence, severity, comorbidity, impairment, suicidality, sociodemographics, childhood adversity and treatment of rapid-cycling and non-rapid-cycling bipolar disorder in ten countries (n=54257). Results The 12-month prevalence of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder was 0.3%. Roughly a third and two-fifths of participants with lifetime and 12-month bipolar disorder respectively met criteria for rapid cycling. Compared with the non-rapid-cycling, rapid-cycling bipolar disorder was associated with younger age at onset, higher persistence, more severe depressive symptoms, greater impairment from depressive symptoms, more out-of-role days from mania/hypomania, more anxiety disorders and an increased likelihood of using health services. Associations regarding childhood, family and other sociodemographic correlates were less clear cut. Conclusions The community epidemiological profile of rapid-cycling bipolar disorder confirms most but not all current clinically based knowledge about the illness. Aim: To trace a reference curve for motor development from birth up to 12 months of corrected chronological age in infants born preterm and low birth weight. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with a sample of 308 preterm infants (53% boys) weighing < 2500 g at birth. The Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) was used for motor development assessment. Results: Comparing the motor performance of preterm infants with infants from a standardized sample on the AIMS, it was found that, except for the age group of the newborn, preterm infants showed lower motor development scores in comparison with the AIMS normative sample in all age groups between 1 and 12 months. The curve of motor development showed a continuous increase in the number of motor skills of preterm infants during their first 12 months of age. However, the average of motor acquisitions of preterm infants showed a nonlinear pattern with a standard indicator of stabilization between 8 and 10 months of age. Conclusion: Preterm infants, 1-12 months of age, showed motor development AIMS scores lower than the standards established in the normative sample. The findings may contribute as norm-reference for assessing the motor development of preterm infants in follow-up programmes in developing countries.

Background and Purpose-Functional MRI is a powerful tool to investigate recovery of brain function in patients with stroke. An inherent assumption in functional MRI data analysis is that the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal is stable over the course of the examination. In this study, we evaluated the validity of such assumption in patients with chronic stroke. Methods-Fifteen patients performed a simple motor task with repeated epochs using the paretic and the unaffected hand in separate runs. The corresponding BOLD signal time courses were extracted from the primary and supplementary motor areas of both hemispheres. Statistical maps were obtained by the conventional General Linear Model and by a parametric General Linear Model. Results-Stable BOLD amplitude was observed when the task was executed with the unaffected hand. Conversely, the BOLD signal amplitude in both primary and supplementary motor areas was progressively attenuated in every patient when the task was executed with the paretic hand. The conventional General Linear Model analysis failed to detect brain activation during movement of the paretic hand. However, the proposed parametric General Linear Model corrected the misdetection problem and showed robust activation in both primary and supplementary motor areas. Conclusions-The use of data analysis tools that are built on the premise of a stable BOLD signal may lead to misdetection of functional regions and underestimation of brain activity in patients with stroke. The present data urge the use of caution when relying on the BOLD response as a marker of brain reorganization in patients with stroke. (Stroke. 2010; 41:1921-1926.)

This thesis aims at addressing the development of autonomous behaviors, for search and exploration with a mini-UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), or also called MAV (Mini Aerial Vehicle) prototype, in order to gather information in rescue scenarios. The platform used in this work is a four rotor helicopter, known as quad-rotor from the German company Ascending Technologies GmbH, which is later assembled with a on-board processing unit (i.e. a tiny light weight computer) and a on-board sensor suite (i.e. 2D-LIDAR and Ultrasonic Sonar). This work can be divided into two phases. In the first phase an Indoor Position Tracking system was settled in order to obtain the Cartesian coordinates (i.e. X, Y, Z) and orientation (i.e.heading) which provides the relative position and orientation of the platform. The second phase was the design and implementation of medium/high level controllers on each command input in order to autonomously control the aircraft position, which is the first step towards an autonomous hovering flight, and any autonomous behavior (e.g. Landing, Object avoidance, Follow the wall). The main work is carried out in the Laboratory ”Intelligent Systems for Emergencies and Civil Defense”, in collaboration with ”Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica” of Sapienza Univ. of Rome and ”Istituto Superiore Antincendi” of the Italian Firemen Department.

The dynamic of the international business and its multidimensional nature requires the understanding of the complexities of different contexts dictated by cultural differences between countries. The purpose of this paper is to study, in depth howsmall and medium-sized companies develop their international marketing mix strategy in their overseas subsidiaries. We use the theoretical construct of Hofstede (1980, 1991) in the dimensions of Power Distance (PD), Uncertainty Avoidance (UA), Individualism (IND), Masculinity (MASC) and Long-Term Orientation (LTO) to assess the cross cultural differences between countries and the business practices to analyze the adaptation or standardization of the international marketing mix strategy of foreign Portuguese subsidiaries. Ourstudy uses an exploratoryand qualitative methodology. We conducted semi-structured interviews in order to achieve a good understanding ofinternational marketing mix strategy of four companies from different sectors. Our results show that the national cultural differences have great influence in the marketing strategy of the subsidiary. The business practices adjustments in the subsidiary company that proved to be necessary conditions for their performance are conducted by the products augmented offerings concerning the characteristics of the product, design and brand name in order to meet the requirements and specificities of the host country of the subsidiary.

A presente dissertação centrou-se no estudo técnico-económico de dois cenários futuros para a continuação de fornecimento de energia térmica a um complexo de piscinas existente na região do vale do Tâmega. Neste momento a central de cogeração existente excedeu a sua licença de utilização e necessita de ser substituída. Os dois cenários em estudo são a compra de uma nova caldeira, a gás natural, para suprir as necessidades térmicas da caldeira existente a fuelóleo, ou o uso de um sistema de cogeração compacto que poderá estar disponível numa empresa do grupo. No primeiro cenário o investimento envolvido é cerca de 456 640 € sem proveitos de outra ordem para além dos requisitos térmicos, mas no segundo cenário os resultados são bem diferentes, mesmo que tenha de ser realizado o investimento de 1 000 000 € na instalação. Para este cenário foi efetuado um levantamento da legislação nacional no que toca à cogeração, recolheram-se dados do edifício como: horas de funcionamento, número de utentes, consumos de energia elétrica, térmica, água, temperatura da água das piscinas, temperatura do ar da nave, assim como as principais características da instalação de cogeração compacta. Com esta informação realizou-se o balanço de massa e energia e criou-se um modelo da nova instalação em software de modelação processual (Aspen Plus® da AspenTech). Os rendimentos térmico e elétrico obtidos da nova central de cogeração compacta foram, respetivamente, de 38,1% e 39,8%, com uma percentagem de perdas de 12,5% o que determinou um rendimento global de 78%. A avaliação da poupança de energia primária para esta instalação de cogeração compacta foi de 19,6 % o que permitiu concluir que é de elevada eficiência. O modelo criado permitiu compreender as necessidades energéticas, determinar alguns custos associados ao processo e simular o funcionamento da unidade com diferentes temperaturas de ar ambiente (cenários de verão e inverno com temperaturas médias de 20ºC e 5ºC). Os resultados revelaram uma diminuição de 1,14 €/h no custo da electricidade e um aumento do consumo de gás natural de 62,47 €/h durante o período mais frio no inverno devido ao aumento das perdas provocadas pela diminuição da temperatura exterior. Com esta nova unidade de cogeração compacta a poupança total anual pode ser, em média, de 267 780 € admitindo um valor para a manutenção de 97 698 €/ano. Se assim for, o projeto apresenta um retorno do investimento ao fim de 5 anos, com um VAL de 1 030 430 € e uma taxa interna de rentabilidade (TIR) de 14% (positiva, se se considerar a taxa de atualização do investimento de 3% para 15 anos de vida). Apesar do custo inicial ser elevado, os parâmetros económicos mostram que o projeto tem viabilidade económica e dará lucro durante cerca de 9 anos.

Nos dias de hoje a indústria tenta tornar-se cada vez mais competitiva baixando os custos de produção e aumentando a eficiência do produto. O presente trabalho visa desenvolver uma tampa de ventilação de um motor elétrico mais competitiva mas que cumpra com o desempenho mecânico e eficiência solicitados. Para tal, começou-se por analisar alguns motores elétricos e as suas aplicações. Seguidamente apresentam-se conceitos sobre aerodinâmica e processos de fabrico que permitem apoiar as opções tomadas ao longo do estudo. Após o fundamento teórico é apresentado todo o processo de desenvolvimento de uma nova peça. Recorrendo a softwares como o solidworks e Ansys, realizou-se uma análise analítica que permitiu validar as alterações propostas na tampa de ventilação. Foram, ainda, realizadas análises experimentais com o intuito de consolidar os resultados obtidos analiticamente e garantir que o componente cumpria os requisitos impostos por organizações internacionais ligadas à indústria do oil and gas. A primeira das análises experimentais realizada testa a capacidade do material resistir ao impacto de componentes de pequenas dimensões. Esta analise permitiu garantir a utilização da tampa de ventilação em todas as áreas sem limites de normalização. A segunda permite analisar experimentalmente as alterações de design assim como testar alguns trabalhos futuros. Esta análise permitiu definir se no novo projeto da tampa desenvolvido deveria comtemplar uma alteração do diâmetro da entrada de ar da tampa de ventilação. Como resultados aparecem as decisões tomadas na presente tese, assim como analisar as metas que foram atingidas e que melhorias se pretende atingir de futuro tentando visar novas metas. Os resultados obtidos permitiram definir uma nova tampa de ventilação com a nova que irá beneficiar a empresa na sua competitividade no mercado mantendo a performance do motor.

O modelo matemático de um sistema real permite o conhecimento do seu comportamento dinâmico e é geralmente utilizado em problemas de engenharia. Por vezes os parâmetros utilizados pelo modelo são desconhecidos ou imprecisos. O envelhecimento e o desgaste do material são fatores a ter em conta pois podem causar alterações no comportamento do sistema real, podendo ser necessário efetuar uma nova estimação dos seus parâmetros. Para resolver este problema é utilizado o software desenvolvido pela empresa MathWorks, nomeadamente, o Matlab e o Simulink, em conjunto com a plataforma Arduíno cujo Hardware é open-source. A partir de dados obtidos do sistema real será aplicado um Ajuste de curvas (Curve Fitting) pelo Método dos Mínimos Quadrados de forma a aproximar o modelo simulado ao modelo do sistema real. O sistema desenvolvido permite a obtenção de novos valores dos parâmetros, de uma forma simples e eficaz, com vista a uma melhor aproximação do sistema real em estudo. A solução encontrada é validada com recurso a diferentes sinais de entrada aplicados ao sistema e os seus resultados comparados com os resultados do novo modelo obtido. O desempenho da solução encontrada é avaliado através do método das somas quadráticas dos erros entre resultados obtidos através de simulação e resultados obtidos experimentalmente do sistema real.

This paper presents the design of low cost, small autonomous surface vehicle for missions in the coastal waters and specifically for the challenging surf zone. The main objective of the vehicle design described in this paper is to address both the capability of operation at sea in relative challenging conditions and maintain a very low set of operational requirements (ease of deployment). This vehicle provides a first step towards being able to perform general purpose missions (such as data gathering or patrolling) and to at least in a relatively short distances to be able to be used in rescue operations (with very low handling requirements) such as carrying support to humans on the water. The USV is based on a commercially available fiber glass hull, it uses a directional waterjet powered by an electrical brushless motor for propulsion, thus without any protruding propeller reducing danger in rescue operations. Its small dimensions (1.5 m length) and weight allow versatility and ease of deployment. The vehicle design is described in this paper both from a hardware and software point of view. A characterization of the vehicle in terms of energy consumption and performance is provided both from test tank and operational scenario tests. An example application in search and rescue is also presented and discussed with the integration of this vehicle in the European ICARUS (7th framework) research project addressing the development and integration of robotic tools for large scale search and rescue operations.
