Results of geochemical studies of suspended matter from the water mass over the hydrothermal field at 9°50'N on the East Pacific Rise are reported. The suspended matter was sampled in background waters, in the buoyant plume, and in the near-bottom waters. Contents of Si, Al, P, Corg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, As, Cr, Cd, Pb, Ag, and Hg were determined. No definite correlations were found between the elements in the background waters. Many of the chemical elements correlated with Fe and associated with its oxyhydroxides in the buoyant plume. In the near-bottom waters trace elements are associated with Fe, Zn, and Cu (probably, with their sulfides formed during mixing of hydrothermal fluids with seawater). Chemical composition of sediment matter precipitated in a sediment trap was similar to the near-bottom suspended matter.

The goal of this work has been to examine the influence of upper ocean food web structure and functioning on both the natural and artificially enhanced sequestration of carbon within the ocean. Data obtained in the mesocosm experiment run in the Bay of Hopavågen in August 2012 are used to assess the extent to which organic matter produced within four different food webs is retained in the upper ocean food web versus remineralized back to carbon dioxide and inorganic nutrients (ammonium, dissolved silicon, phosphate) versus exported from the system in the form of rapidly sinking particles. The experiment was carried out in a set of 12 mesocosms covering, in triplicate, 2 different phytoplankton communities (diatom versus non-diatom) exposed to 2 different zooplankton communities (-copepod and +copepod). These starting conditions were established by first filling the bags, roughly simultaneously, with seawater from the Bay of Hopavågen. Mesozooplankton were then removed to the most complete extent possible immediately removed from half of the mesocosms through repeated vertical hauls of a plankton net (200 µm mesh). Nitrate and phosphate was added to half mesocosms daily to promote the growth of non-siliceous phytoplankton (e.g. dinoflagellates or coccolithophores). To the other half of the mesocosms, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were added to promote the growth of diatoms. Material was allowed to settle and the two distinct phytoplankton populations were allowed to develop for 4 days, after which copepods collected from the Bay of Hopavågen were added back to the half of the N+P mesocosms and to the half of the N+P+Si mesocosms from which mesozooplankton had not been removed at the beginning. This yielded a set of four initial starting conditions (N+P-copepods, N+P+copepods, N+P+Si-copepods, and N+P+Si+copepods). In the primary mesocosms, samples for a set of core parameters were taken every time the mesocosms were sampled. Samples for particulates (PIC, BSi, POC, PON) were collected on GF/F or 0.4 µm polycarbonate.

In a gravity core from the eastern Mediterranean Sea, a chemically and mineralogically distinct, 5.5-cm-thick layer is present above sapropel S-1 and overlain by hemipelagic marls. Calcite is completely absent in this exotic layer, dolomite is present only in small amounts, and the Cr concentrations are significantly enhanced. The layer was deposited primarily under reducing conditions, but the distributions of redox-sensitive elements show that a large part of the exotic layer is now oxidised by a downward-progressing oxidation front. Sediments from within the nearby anoxic, hypersaline Urania Basin are similar to those from the exotic layer, in particular in S-, C-, and O-isotope distributions of pyrite and dolomite, as well as increased Cr concentrations. Mud expulsion due to expansion of gas-rich mud is proposed to explain the presence of the exotic layer outside the Urania Basin. The deposition of an anoxic layer above S-1 shielded the sapropel from oxidation which resulted in the rare occurrence of a complete preservation of S-1 and provides the first minimum age for the start of anoxic mud accumulation in the Urania Basin.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 190 was programmed to investigate deformational, diagenetic, and hydrologic processes and their interactions in the Nankai Trough accretionary prism. Site 1178 is the northernmost site in the Muroto Transect. Slope sediments and the underlying landward-dipping reflector zone were successfully cored. Temperature measurements and Cl concentrations in pore water indirectly indicate the presence of gas hydrate between 120 and 400 meters below seafloor (mbsf) at Site 1178, with the highest concentrations between 150 and 200 mbsf (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.190.109.2001). Sedimentary structures show a broad range of deformation structures rich in fractures, suggesting active fluid circulation in the Nankai Trough prism. One of the objectives of Leg 190 was to clarify the interplay of various fundamental processes taking place in the Nankai Trough accretionary prism. Bacteria or prokaryotes in deep subsurface sediment play an important role for material transformation and circulation in an accretionary prism. Significant amounts of bacteria are detected in many of the samples examined (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2001, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.190.109.2001). The type of organic matter in sediments is an important factor related to bacterial activity. To assist investigations on material circulation in deep subsurface sediments, the samples from Site 1178 were analyzed for geolipids (extractable organic matter). The basic data set is preliminarily compiled in the present report to show the types of organic matter and their concentrations in sediments from Site 1178.

Nitrogen fixation data from the cruise number M100 with research vessel "Meteor" from 01.09.-01.10.2013 (1st leg from Walvis Bay to Walvis Bay) in front of Namibia. Samples taken by CTD- rosette sampler from different depths and incubated in glass bottles (270-1070 ml) at light intensities that resemble the in situ light intensities of the sampling depth after 15N2 gas was injected to the sample. After the incubation time of 24 hours, the complete bottle content was filtered onto a pre-combusted Whatman GF/F filter. Filters were frozen, transported to the institute on dry ice and measured in a mass spectrometer for Delta 15N. The principle of the method was described by Montoya et al. (1996) and calculation was done according to their spread sheet. From the data of the single depths, the nitrogen fixation per square meter within the upper 40 m of the water column was calculated. The methods are described in detail in a paper submitted by Wasmund et al. in 2014 to be printed in 2015. Some results are surprisingly below zero. This occurs if the Delta 15N of the blank is higher than the measurement after incubation. It indicates that no nitrogen fixation occurred. Due to natural variability, the variability of the nitrogen fixation data is high. In an overall estimate, also over several cruises, negative and positive values compensate more or less, suggesting that nitrogen fixation is insignificant in the waters in front of northern Namibia and southern Angola.

In this monograph on the basis of materials obtained by the author and his colleagues in Arctic expeditions of 1991-2005 and of published data results of studies effect of aerosols on environmental conditions and marine sedimentation in the Arctic are summarizes. Processes of aeolian transport and transformation of sedimentary material from sources to places of its accumulation in bottom sediments are described. Results of this study can be used to assess current state of ecosystem of Arctic seas and as a background for evaluation of possible human impact on nature during exploration of mineral resources of the Arctic shelf. For oceanographers, geochemists, geoecologists.

Oxygen concentration and rate of change of oxygen were measured using the Unisense Oxygen Microsensor System. Water from different depth was taken from CTD attached niskin bottle. Measurements were conducted in 2 ml vials provided by Unisense and lasted for a minimum of two minutes after a stable rate was achieved. The sampling interval was 6 seconds. Transport containers, tubes and vials for measurements were covered with light proof black foil for dark-measurements. Measurements labeled "unfiltered" were passed through a 200 µm sieve in order to remove potential biases stemming from individual meso-zooplankton. Measurements labeled "filtered" were passed through a 0.8 µm polycarbonate filter placed on top of a wetted GF/F filter.
