Thin films of lithium niobate were deposited on the Pt/Ti/SiO2 (111) substrates by spin coating from the polymeric precursor method (Pechini process). Annealing in static air and oxygen atmosphere was performed at 500 degreesC for 3 h. The films obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were measured in frequency region from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. Electrical characterization of the films pointed to ferroelectricity via hysteresis loop. The influence of oxygen atmosphere on crystallization, morphology and properties of LiNbO3 thin films is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Crystalline molybdate thin films were prepared by the complex polymerization method. The AMoO(4) (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) films were deposited onto Si wafers by the spinning technique. The Mo-O bond in the AMoO(4) structure was confirmed by FTIR spectra. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of crystalline scheelite-type phase. The mass, size, and basicity of A(2+) cations was found to be dependent on the intrinsic characteristics of the materials. The grain size increased in the following order: CaMoO4 < SrMoO4 < BaMoO4. The emission band wavelength was detected at around 576 nm. Our findings suggest that the material's morphology and photoluminescence were both affected by the variations in cations (Ca, Sr, or Ba) and in the thermal treatment.

Platinum-Pd nuggets from the Born Sucesso stream alluvium Minas Gerais, Brazil. have been investigated by electron-probe microanalysis. The nuggets attain 1 mm in maximum dimension and have a botryoidal habit, with pronounced compositional core-to-margin zoning of internal structures, Although there is a wide variation in internal morphology and individual zones vary markedly in thickness (<1-100 mum), a typical composite arborescent nugget comprises a broad irregular core region of massive auriferous Pd-Hg alloy (potarite delta-PdHg) or cavity space + relict potarite enclosed by a narrow zone of platiniferous, palladium or alloy of near Pt50Pd50 composition, and is progressively oscillatory zoned by palladian platinum, with growth eventually enveloping the whole botryoidal colony, to a narrow rim of palladian platinum or pure platinum. Other nuggets comprise an arborescent to dendritic core of auriferous potarite, a broad internal zone of either pure platinum or palladian platinum, and a narrow rim of platinum, the mineral palladium contains up to about 65 at.% Pd; this is the first detailed modern confirmation of palladium in its type locality. Auriferous potarite ranges in composition from similar toPd(3)Hg(2) to near Pd(Hg,Au). The origin of these nuggets remains unclear, but their mineralogy is broadly equivalent to that of palladian gold. potarite and platinum in alluvial sediments and overburden from Devon, England, which are considered to be detrital, and their platinum-group-clement geochemistry is consistent with precipitation from hydrothermal fluids. We suggest that the Bom Sucesso nuggets resulted from high-level episodic hydrothermal alteration of mafic and ultramafic rocks within the drainage basin, with the remobilized Pt and Pd precipitated in open spaces in the enclosing metaquartzites.

Pb1- xCaxTiO3 thin films with x = 0.24 composition were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The surface morphology and crystal structure, and the ferroelectric and dielectric properties of the films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films revealed their polycrystalline nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness. The multilayer Pb1-xCaxTO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 60-70 nm. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were, respectively, 174 and 0.04 at a 1 kHz frequency. The 600-nm thick film showed a current density leakage in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) in an electric field of about 51 kV/cm. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin films showed normal ferroelectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the deposited films were 15 muC/cm(2) and 150 kV/cm, respectively. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

An efficient technique to cut polygonal meshes as a step in the geometric modeling of topographic and geological data has been developed. In boundary represented models of outcropping strata and faulted horizons polygonal meshes often intersect each other. TRICUT determines the line of intersection and re-triangulates the area of contact. Along this line the mesh is split in two or more parts which can be selected for removal. The user interaction takes place in the 3D-model space. The intersection, selection and removal are under graphic control. The visualization of outcropping geological structures in digital terrain models is improved by determining intersections against a slightly shifted terrain model. Thus, the outcrop line becomes a surface which overlaps the terrain in its initial position. The area of this overlapping surface changes with respect to the strike and dip of the structure, the morphology and the offset. Some applications of TRICUT on different real datasets are shown. TRICUT is implemented in C+ + using the Visualization Toolkit in conjunction with the RAPID and TRIANGLE libraries. The program runs under LINUX and UNIX using the MESA OpenGL library. This work gives an example of solving a complex 3D geometric problem by integrating available robust public domain software. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work describes the synthesis of a first-generation iron porphyrin catalyst entrapped in a silica matrix by the sol-gel route, leading to spherical particles. The catalyst was synthesized by the method of Stober, through hydrolysis and condensation of the alkoxysilane TEOS in a mixture of alcohol, water and ammonia, in the presence of the iron porphyrin Fe(TPP)Cl. The relation between particle morphology and catalytic activity of the different Fe(TPP)-SiO2, obtained using different H2O/silane molar ratios and ammonia concentrations in the xerogel syntheses, was studied. The obtained catalysts were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR Si-29. thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Their ability to catalyze (Z)-cyclooctene epoxidation and cyclohexane oxidation was tested using iodosylbenzene as oxygen donor; the oxidation products were analyzed by gas chromatography and the catalysts obtained in a form of particles spherical and monodispersed showed to be a promising catalytic system for selective oxidation. Polycrystalline BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films having a tetragonal scheelite structure were prepared at different temperatures. Soluble precursors such as barium carbonate, lead acetate trihydrate and tungstic acid, as starting materials, were mixed in aqueous solution. The thin films were deposited on silicon, platinum-coated silicon and quartz substrates by means of the spinning technique. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the thin films were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction, and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, respectively. Nucleation stages and surface morphology evolution of thin films on silicon substrates have been studied by atomic force microscopy. XRD characterization of these films showed that BaWO4 and PbWO4 phase crystallize at 500 degreesC from an inorganic amorphous phase. FTIR spectra revealed the complete decomposition of the organic ligands at 500 degreesC and the appearance of two sharp and intense bands between 1000 and 600 cm(-1) assigned to vibrations of the antisymmetric stretches resulting from the high crystallinity of both thin films. The optical properties were also studied. It was found that BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films have Eg = 5.78 eV and 4.20 eV, respectively, of a direct transition nature. The excellent microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity results confirmed that soft solution processing provides an inexpensive and environmentally friendly route for the preparation of BaWO4 and PbWO4 thin films.
