We study the production of D (sJ) (2317) mesons in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the quark coalescence model. The predicted D (sJ) (2317) abundance depends sensitively on the quark structure of the D (sJ) (2317) meson. We have also evaluated the absorption cross sections of the D (sJ) (2317) meson by pi, rho, kaon and K* in a phenomenological hadronic model. We find that the final yield of D (sJ) (2317) mesons remains sensitive to its initial number produced from the quark-gluon plasma, providing thus the possibility of studying the quark structure of the D (sJ) (2317) meson and its production mechanism in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

We use QCD sum rules to study the recently observed meson Z(+)(4430), considered as a D*D-1 molecule with J(P) = 0(-). We consider the contributions of condensates up to dimension eight and work at leading order in alpha(s). We get m(Z) = (4.40 +/- 0.10) GeV in a very good agreement with the experimental value. We also make predictions for the analogous mesons Z(s) and Z(bb) considered as D-s*D-1 and B*B-1 molecules, respectively. For Z(s) we predict mZ(s) = (4.70 +/- 0.06) GeV, which is above the D-s* D-1 threshold, indicating that it is probably a very broad state and, therefore, difficult to observe experimentally. For Z(bb) we predict m(Zbb) = (10.74 +/- 0.12) GeV, in agreement with quark model predictions. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We study the nuclear quadrupole interaction at the nitrogen sites in the molecular and crystalline phases of the imidazole compound. We use PAW which is a state-of-the-art method to calculate the electronic structure and electric field gradient at the nucleus in the framework of the density functional theory. The quadrupole frequencies at both imino and amino N sites are in excellent agreement with measurements. This is the first time that the electric field gradient at crystalline imidazole is correctly treated by an ab initio theoretical approach.

The quadrupolar hyperfine interactions of in-diffused (111)In -> (111)Cd probes in polycrystalline isostructural Zr(4)Al(3) and Hf(4)Al(3) samples containing small admixtures of the phases (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) were investigated. A strong preference of (111)In solutes for the contaminant (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) minority phases was observed. Detailed calculations of the electric field gradient (EFG) at the Cd nucleus using the full-potential augmented plane wave + local orbital formalism allowed us to assign the observed EFG fractions to the various lattice sites in the (Zr/Hf)(3)Al(2) compounds and to understand the preferential site occupation of the minority phases by the (111)In atoms. The effects of the size of the supercell and relaxation around the oversized In and Cd probe atoms were investigated in detail.

High-energy nuclear collisions create an energy density similar to that of the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang(1); in both cases, matter and antimatter are formed with comparable abundance. However, the relatively short-lived expansion in nuclear collisions allows antimatter to decouple quickly from matter, and avoid annihilation. Thus, a high-energy accelerator of heavy nuclei provides an efficient means of producing and studying antimatter. The antimatter helium-4 nucleus ((4)(He) over bar), also known as the anti-alpha ((alpha) over bar), consists of two antiprotons and two antineutrons (baryon number B = -4). It has not been observed previously, although the alpha-particle was identified a century ago by Rutherford and is present in cosmic radiation at the ten per cent level(2). Antimatter nuclei with B -1 have been observed only as rare products of interactions at particle accelerators, where the rate of antinucleus production in high-energy collisions decreases by a factor of about 1,000 with each additional antinucleon(3-5). Here we report the observation of (4)<(He) over bar, the heaviest observed antinucleus to date. In total, 18 (4)(He) over bar counts were detected at the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC; ref. 6) in 10(9) recorded gold-on-gold (Au+Au) collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 200 GeV and 62 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair. The yield is consistent with expectations from thermodynamic(7) and coalescent nucleosynthesis(8) models, providing an indication of the production rate of even heavier antimatter nuclei and a benchmark for possible future observations of (4)(He) over bar in cosmic radiation.

We report the J/psi -> e(+)e(-) and the psi` -> e(+)e(-) production cross sections in the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The first measurements of the production cross sections of the psi` and the psi` over the J/psi, will contribute to the clarification of the theoretical understanding of the J/psi meson production. The inclusive J/psi polarization through the same decay channel is also presented, showing a trend of slightly longitudinal polarization for p(T) <5 GeV/c.

This article presents an investigation of the temperature induced modification in the microstructure and dynamics of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2`-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) cast films using Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS), solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Fluorescence Spectroscopy (PL). MEH-PPV chain motions were characterized as a function of temperature by NMR. The results indicated that the solvent used to cast the films influences the activation energy of the side-chain motions. This was concluded from the comparison of the activation energy of the toluene cast film, E(a) = (54 +/- 8) kJ/mol, and chloroform cast film, E(a) = (69 +/- 5) kJ/mol, and could be attributed to the higher side-chain packing provided by chloroform, that preferentially solvates the side chain in contrast to toluene that solvates mainly the backbone. Concerning the backbone mobility, it was observed that the torsional motions in the MEH-PPV have average amplitude of similar to 10 degrees at 300 K, which was found to be independent of the solvent used to cast the films. In order to correlate the molecular dynamics processes with the changes in the microstructure of the polymer, in situ WAXS experiments as a function of temperature were performed and revealed that the interchain spacing in the MEH-PPV molecular aggregates increases as a function of temperature, particularly at temperatures where molecular relaxations occur. It was also observed that the WAXS peak associated with the bilayer spacing becomes narrower and its intensity increases whereas the peak associated with the inter-backbone planes reduces its intensity for higher temperatures. This last result Could be interpreted as a decrease in the number of aggregates and the reduction of the interchain species during the MEH-PPV relaxation processes. These WAXS results were correlated with PL spectra modifications observed upon temperature treatments. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fluorene and thiophene units are commonly used in polymeric materials for electro-optical applications. Due to differences in reactivity, the final composition of polymers containing these components often differs from that used in their preparation. This contribution describes the synthesis of PPV type terpolymers built by fluorene, phenylene and thiophene units and their quantification by CPMAS NMR. The similarity of the three aromatic co-monomers makes it difficult to separate the analytical responses that would allow quantification of each copolymer unit in the chain. In this sense, we show that the combination of dipolar dephased CPMAS with radiofrequency ramp and proper spectral treatment allows a good estimation and quantification of the copolymer constitution. The reactions of PbR(2)(OAc)(2) (R=Me, Ph) with 3-(2-thienyl)-2-sulfanylpropenoic acid (H(2)tSpa) in methanol or ethanol afforded complexes [PbR(2)(tspa)] that electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and IR data suggest are polymeric. X-ray studies showed that [PbPh(2)(tspa)(dmso)] center dot dmso, crystallized from a solution of [PbPh(2)(tspa)] in dmso, is dimeric, and that [HQ](2)[PbPh(2)(tspa)(2)] (Q=diisopropylamine), obtained after removal of [PbPh(2)(tspa)] from a reaction including Q, contains the monomeric anion [PbPh(2)(tSpa)(2)](2-). In the solid state the lead atoms are O,S-chelated by the tspa ligands in all these products, and in the latter two have distorted octahedral coordination environments. NMR data suggest that tspa(2-) remains coordinated to PbR(2)(2+) in solution in dmso. Neither thiamine nor thiamine diphosphate reacted with PbMe(2)(NO(3))(2) in D(2)O. Prior addition of H(2)tSpa protected LLC center dot PK1 renal proximal tubule cells against PbMe(2)(NO(3))(2); thiamine had no statistically significant effect by itself, but greatly potentiated the action of H(2)tSpa. Administration of either H(2)tspa or thiamine to male albino Sprague-Dawley rats dosed 30 min previously with PbMe(2)(NO(3))(2) was associated with reduced inhibition of delta-ALAD by the organolead compound, and with lower lead levels in kidney and brain, but joint administration of both H(2)tspa and thiamine only lowered lead concentration in the kidney.

Adenosine Is known to modulate neuronal activity within the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). The modulatory effect of adenosine A, receptors (A(1R)) on alpha(2)-adrenoceptors (Adr(2R)) was evaluated using quantitative radioautography within NTS subnuclei and using neuronal culture of normotensive (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Radioautography was used in a saturation experiment to measure Adr2R binding parameters (B(max), K(d)) In the presence of 3 different concentrations of N(6)-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA), an A(1R) agonist. Neuronal culture confirmed our radioautographic results. [(3)H]RX821002, an Adr(2R) antagonist, was used as a ligand for both approaches. The dorsomedial/dorsolateral subnucleus of WKY showed an increase in B(max) values (21%) Induced by 10 nmol/L of CPA. However, the subpostremal subnucleus showed a decrease in Kd values (24%) induced by 10 nmol/L of CPA. SHR showed the same pattern of changes as WKY within the same subnuclei; however, the modulatory effect of CPA was induced by I nmol/L (increased B(max), 17%; decreased K(d), 26%). Cell culture confirmed these results, because 10(-5) and 10(-7) mol/L of CPA promoted an Increase in [3H]RX821002 binding of WKY (53%) and SHR cells (48%), respectively. DPCPX, an AIR antagonist, was used to block the modulatory effect promoted by CPA with respect to Adr2R binding. In conclusion, our study shows for the first time an interaction between A(1R) that increases the binding of Adr2R within specific subnuclei of the NTS. This may be important In understanding the complex autonomic response induced by adenosine within the NTS. In addition, changes in interactions between receptors might be relevant to understanding the development of hypertension. (Hypertens Res 2008; 31: 2177-2186)

Lycopodiopsis derbyi Renault was analyzed on the basis of compressed silicified stems from four Guadalupian outcrops of the Parana Basin (Corumbatai Formation) in the State of Sao Paulo, Southern Brazil. Dichotomous stems have been recorded, and three different branch regions related to apoxogenesis are described. The most proximal region has larger, clearly rhomboidal leaf cushions, with protruding upper edges; the intermediate transitional region also has rhombic leaf cushions, but they are smaller and less elongated than the lower in the same axis; finally, the most distal region reveals only incipient cushions, with inconspicuous infrafoliar bladders; interspersed microphylls were still attached. A well preserved branch representative of this most distal region was sectioned; it has a siphonostelic cylinder similar to that previously described for L derbyi. The cortex, however, shows new traits, such as a short portion of elongated cells between the periderm and the external cortex (or leaf cushion tissue). The stems were apparently silicified prior to their final burial but were probably not transported for long distances. Their final burial may have taken place during storm events, which were common during the deposition of the Corumbatai Formation. These stems are commonly deformed due to compression, mainly because the internal cortical portions rapidly decayed prior to silicification due to their thin-walled tissue, and are therefore not preserved. The common alkalinity of a shallow marine environment such as that in which the Corumbatai Formation was deposited, should mobilize the silica and favors petrifaction. Based on the new data, an emended diagnosis is proposed and a modification of the identification key published by Thomas and Meyen in 1984 for Upper Paleozoic Lycopsida is suggested. The electrical properties of conducting polymers make them useful materials in a wide number of technological applications. In the last decade, an important effect on the properties of the conducting polymer when iron oxides particles are incorporated into the conductive matrix was shown. In the present study, films of polypyrrole were synthesized in the presence of magnetite particles. The effect of the magnetite particles on the structure of the polymer matrix was determined using Raman spectroscopy. Mass variations at different concentrations of Fe(3)O(4) incorporated into the conducting matrix were also measured by means of quartz crystal microbalance. Additionally, the changes in the resistance of the films were evaluated over time by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in solid state. These results show that the magnetite incorporation decreases polymeric film resistance and Raman experiments have evidenced that the incorporation of magnetite into polymeric matrix not only stabilizes the polaronic form of the polypyrrole, but also preserves the polymer from further oxidation. Spectroscopic investigation of the interactions between emeraldine base polyaniline and Eu(III) ions
Resumo:
The interactions of emeraldine base form of polyaniline (EB-PANI) and Eu(III) ions in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solution and in films have been investigated by UV-vis-NIR, resonance Raman. luminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. These spectroscopic techniques allowed to characterize quinone and semiquinone segments in the polymeric chains. and the oxidation state of europium ions in Eu-PANI samples. For high values of Eu(III)/N molar ratio (24/1) the presence of a weak polaronic absorption band at 980 nm in UV-vis-NIR spectrum and the observation of bands at 1330 and 1378 (nu(center dot)(C-N+)) cm(-1) due to emeraldine salt in the Raman spectrum at 1064 nm indicate a low doping degree. Oxidation of EB-PANI to pernigraniline base (PB-PANI) occurs in diluted solutions. The experimental data showed that the solvent plays an important role on the nature of formed species. The narrow EPR signal at g = 2.006 (line width 8G) confirms the presence of PANI radical cations in Eu-PANI film. The absence of broad signal characteristic of Eu(II) in EPR spectrum suggested that europium ions are primarily at Eu(III) oxidation state. The luminescence spectra of Eu-PANI film presented emission bands at 405 and 418 nm assigned to PANI moieties and bands at 594,615 and 701 nm assigned to (5)D(0) -> (7)F(J) (J = 1, 2 and 4, respectively) transitions of Eu(III). EPR and photoluminescence data confirm that europium ions are mainly in Eu(III) oxidation state in Eu(III)/PANI films. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The extracellular hemoglobin from Glossoscolex paulistus (HbGp) has a molecular mass of 3.6 M Da, It has a high oligomeric stability at pH 7.0 and low autoxidation rates, as compared to vertebrate hemoglobins. In this work, fluorescence and light scattering experiments were performed with the three oxidation forms of HbGp exposed to acidic pH. Our focus is on the HbGp stability at acidic pH and also on the determination of the isoelectric point (pI) of the protein. Our results show that the protein in the cyanomet form is more stable than in the other two forms, in the whole range. Our zeta-potential data are consistent with light scattering results. Average values apt obtained by different techniques were 5.6 +/- 0.5, 5.4 +/- 0.2 and 5.2 +/- 0.5 for the oxy, met, and cyanomet forms. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments have shown that, at pH 6.0, the aggregation (oligomeric) state of oxy-, met- and cyanomet-HbGp remains the same as that at 7.0. The interaction between the oxy-HbGp and ionic surfactants at pH 5.0 and 6.0 was also monitored in the present study. At pH 5,0, below the protein pI, the effects of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) are inverted when compared to pH 7.0. For CTAC, in acid pH 5.0, no precipitation is observed, while for SDS an intense light scattering appears due to a precipitation process. HbGp interacts strongly with the cationic surfactant at pH 7.0 and with the anionic one at pH 5.0. This effect is due to the predominance, in the protein surface, of residues presenting opposite charges to the surfactant headgroups. This information can be relevant for the development of extracellular hemoglobin-based artificial blood substitutes.

Objective: For the evaluation of the energetic performance of combined renewable heating systems that supply space heat and domestic hot water for single family houses, dynamic behaviour, component interactions, and control of the system play a crucial role and should be included in test methods. Methods: New dynamic whole system test methods were developed based on “hardware in the loop” concepts. Three similar approaches are described and their differences are discussed. The methods were applied for testing solar thermal systems in combination with fossil fuel boilers (heating oil and natural gas), biomass boilers, and/or heat pumps. Results: All three methods were able to show the performance of combined heating systems under transient operating conditions. The methods often detected unexpected behaviour of the tested system that cannot be detected based on steady state performance tests that are usually applied to single components. Conclusion: Further work will be needed to harmonize the different test methods in order to reach comparable results between the different laboratories. Practice implications: A harmonized approach for whole system tests may lead to new test standards and improve the accuracy of performance prediction as well as reduce the need for field tests.
