Analysis of nonlinear dynamics of vocal folds using high-speed video observation and biomechanical modeling

Primary voice production occurs in the larynx through vibrational movements carried out by vocal folds. However, many problems can affect this complex system resulting in voice disorders. In this context, time-frequency-shape analysis based on embedding phase space plots and nonlinear dynamics methods have been used to evaluate the vocal fold dynamics during phonation. For this purpose, the present work used high-speed video to record the vocal fold movements of three subjects and extract the glottal area time series using an image segmentation algorithm. This signal is used for an optimization method which combines genetic algorithms and a quasi-Newton method to optimize the parameters of a biomechanical model of vocal folds based on lumped elements (masses, springs and dampers). After optimization, this model is capable of simulating the dynamics of recorded vocal folds and their glottal pulse. Bifurcation diagrams and phase space analysis were used to evaluate the behavior of this deterministic system in different circumstances. The results showed that this methodology can be used to extract some physiological parameters of vocal folds and reproduce some complex behaviors of these structures contributing to the scientific and clinical evaluation of voice production. Video laparoscopic intervention for an interstitial pregnancy after failure of clinical treatment

CONTEXT: Interstitial pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy for which the best therapeutic course of action has yet to be determined. Surgical intervention entails a high risk of hemorrhage due to the great vascularization of the cornual region of the uterus. Case descriptions facilitate the analysis of results and aid clinicians in determining the most appropriate course of action in these situations. CASE REPORT: In a patient with an ultrasound diagnosis of interstitial pregnancy, clinical treatment using methotrexate was chosen. However, after one week, there was a marked decline in the serum level of the β subunit of chorionic gonadotropin hormone, although an ultrasound examination revealed embryonic cardiac activity. A second dose of the chemotherapy was administered. Embryonic cardiac activity persisted 48 hours later. Video laparoscopy was performed to achieve right-side cornual resection, which resulted in satisfactory resolution of the case.

Underwater towed video: a useful tool to rapidly assess elasmobranch populations in large marine protected areas

Elasmobranch stock assessment studies are usually made through fisheries surveys data. However, in large marine protected areas (MPAs) the use of destructive techniques must be dismissed in order to avoid population impacts. In 2005, while conducting a marine habitat survey in two marine Special Areas of Conservation (Sebadales de Playa de Inglés and Franja Marina de Mogán) in south Gran Canary Island (Canary Islands, Spain) with underwater towed video (UTV) and underwater visual census (UVC) transects, we recognized the opportunity rose to assess elasmobranch populations through UTV. Number of observed species and specimens, overall field work effort and total surveyed area were determined and compared between methods. Mean observations per day per unit of time (MOPUT) and mean observations per day per unit of surveyed area (MOPUA) were also compared through Mann–Whitney rank sum statistical test (α=0.05). Data analysis demonstrated that UTV is a very useful tool to rapidly assess elasmobranch populations in large MPAs in good visibility underwater environments. It can assess larger areas than UVC with the same effort (statistically significant difference found for the MOPUT; p=<0.001), leading to more observed species (5 vs 2) and specimens (46 vs 3) per day of work, with no loss in resolution power (MOPUA values were not significantly different between UTV and UVC; p=0.104).

A video database for facial behavior understanding

[EN]The use of new technologies in order to step up the inter- action between humans and machines is the main proof that faces are important in videos. Therefore we suggest a novel Face Video Database for development, testing and veri cation of algorithms related to face- based applications and to facial recognition applications. In addition of facial expression videos, the database includes body videos. The videos are taken by three di erent cameras, working in real time, without vary- ing illumination conditions.
