We review some recent developments in many body perturbation theory (MBPT) calculations that have enabled the study of interfaces and defects. Starting from the theoretical basis of MBPT, Hedin's equations are presented, leading to the CW and CWI' approximations. We introduce the perturbative approach, that is the one most commonly used for obtaining quasiparticle (QP) energies. The practical strategy presented for dealing with the frequency dependence of the self energy operator is based on either plasmon-pole models (PPM) or the contour deformation technique, with the latter being more accurate. We also discuss the extrapolar method for reducing the number of unoccupied states which need to be included explicity in the calculations. The use of the PAW method in the framework of MBPT is also described. Finally, results which have been obtained using, MBPT for band offsets a interfaces and for defects presented, with companies on the main difficulties and cancels.

The feasibility of large-scale implementation of Li-air batteries (LABs) hinges on understanding the thermodynamic and kinetic factors that control charge-discharge rates, efficiency and life times. Here, the kinetics of bias-induced reactions is explored locally on the surface of Li-ion conductive glass ceramics, a preferred electrolyte for LABs, using direct current-voltage and strain spectroscopies. Above a critical bias, particle growth kinetics were found to be linear in both the bias and time domains. Partial reversibility was observed for Li particles as evidenced by the presence of anodic peaks following the Li(+) reduction, as well an associated reduction in particle height. The degree of reversibility was highest for the smallest particles formed. These observations thus suggest the possibility of producing nanobatteries with an active anode volume of the order of 0.1 al.

A panel of reporter gene assays (RGAs) coupled with a single solid phase extraction (SPE) step was developed and used to screen bottled mineral water for the presence of four classes of endocrine disruptors (EDs), oestrogens, androgens, progestagens and glucocorticoids.
Fourteen brands of bottled mineral water in triplicate (42 samples) were analysed. Overall, hormonal activity was found in 78% of the samples. Oestrogenic, androgenic, progestagenic and glucocorticoid activity was found in 38%, 38%, 36% and 55% of the samples, respectively at an average concentration of 10 ng/l 17 beta-estradiol equivalent (EEQ), 26 ng/l testosterone equivalent (TEQ), 123 ng/l progesterone equivalent (PEQ) and 13.5 ng/l hydrocortisone equivalent (HEQ).
The level of oestrogenic, androgenic and progestagenic activity observed is not considered a matter of concern for the consumers' health. It is unknown whether the glucocorticoid levels observed are safe. The ED source, long term exposure and mixture effects remain to be investigated. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Herein we present a study on the physical/chemical properties of a new Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) based on N-methylacetamide (MAc) and lithium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (LiTFSI). Due to its interesting properties, such as wide liquid-phase range from -60°C to 280°C, low vapor pressure, and high ionic conductivity up to 28.4mScm at 150°C and at x=1/4, this solution can be practically used as electrolyte for electrochemical storage systems such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and/or lithium ion batteries (LiBs). Firstly, relationships between its transport properties (conductivity and viscosity) as a function of composition and temperature were discussed through Arrhenius' Law and Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equations, as well as by using the Walden classification. From this investigation, it appears that this complex electrolyte possesses a number of excellent transport properties, like a superionic character for example. Based on which, we then evaluated its electrochemical performances as electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications by using activated carbon (AC) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO) electrodes, respectively. These results demonstrate that this electrolyte has a good compatibility with both electrodes (AC and LiFePO) in each testing cell driven also by excellent electrochemical properties in specific capacitance, rate and cycling performances, indicating that the LiTFSI/MAc DES can be a promising electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications especially for those requiring high safety and stability. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The present work reports a comparative study on the performances of two bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide-based protic (PIL) and aprotic (AIL) ionic liquids, namely, trimethyl-ammonium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([HN][TFSI], PIL) and trimethyl-sulfonium bis[(trifluoromethyl) sulfonyl]imide ([S][TFSI], AIL), as mixtures with three molecular solvents: gamma butyrolactone (?-BL), propylene carbonate (PC), and acetonitrile (ACN) as electrolytes for supercapacitor applications. After an analysis of their transport properties as a function of temperature, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements were conducted at 25 and -30 C to investigate the performance of these mixtures as electrolytes for supercapacitors using activated carbon as the electrode material. Surprisingly, for each solvent investigated, no significant differences were observed between the electrolytes based on the PIL and AIL in their electrochemical performance due to the presence or the absence of the labile proton. Furthermore, good specific capacitances were observed in the case of ?-BL-based electrolytes even at low temperature. Capacitances up to 131 and 80 F·g are observed for the case of the [S][TFSI] + ?-BL mixture at 25 and -30 C, respectively. This latter result is very promising particularly for the formulation of new environmentally friendly electrolytes within energy storage systems even at low temperatures. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Mineral prospecting and raising finance for ‘junior’ mining firms has historically been regarded as a speculative activity. For the regulators of securities markets upon which ‘junior’ mining companies seek to raise capital, a perennial problem has been handling not only the indeterminacy of scientific claims, but also the social basis of epistemic practices. This paper examines the production of a system of public warrant and associated knowledge practices intended to enable investors to differentiate between ‘destructive’ and ‘productive’ varieties of financial speculation. It traces the use of the notion of ‘disclosure’ in constructing and legitimizing the ‘juniors’ market in Canada. It argues that though the work of ‘economics’ may be necessary in the construction of markets, it is by no means sufficient. Attention must also be given to the ways in which legal models of ‘the free-market’ can be translated and constantly re-worked across the sites and spaces of regulatory practice, animating the geographies of markets.

The oxidation of trimethoxymethane (TMM) (trimethyl orthoformate) in a direct oxidation PBI fuel cell was examined by on-line mass spectroscopy and on-line FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that TMM was almost completely hydrolyzed in a direct oxidation fuel cell which employs an acid doped polymer electrolyte to form a mixture of methylformate, methanol and formic acid. It also found that TMM was hydrolyzed in the presence of water at 120°C even without acidic catalyst. The anode performance improves in the sequence of methanol, TMM, formic acid/methanol, and methylformate solutions. Since formic acid is electrochemically more active than methanol, these results suggest that formic acid is probably a key factor for the improvement of the anode performance by using TMM instead of methanol under these conditions. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Mineral exploration programmes around the world use data from remote sensing, geophysics and direct sampling. On a regional scale, the combination of airborne geophysics and ground-based geochemical sampling can aid geological mapping and economic minerals exploration. The fact that airborne geophysical and traditional soil-sampling data are generated at different spatial resolutions means that they are not immediately comparable due to their different sampling density. Several geostatistical techniques, including indicator cokriging and collocated cokriging, can be used to integrate different types of data into a geostatistical model. With increasing numbers of variables the inference of the cross-covariance model required for cokriging can be demanding in terms of effort and computational time. In this paper a Gaussian-based Bayesian updating approach is applied to integrate airborne radiometric data and ground-sampled geochemical soil data to maximise information generated from the soil survey, to enable more accurate geological interpretation for the exploration and development of natural resources. The Bayesian updating technique decomposes the collocated estimate into a production of two models: prior and likelihood models. The prior model is built from primary information and the likelihood model is built from secondary information. The prior model is then updated with the likelihood model to build the final model. The approach allows multiple secondary variables to be simultaneously integrated into the mapping of the primary variable. The Bayesian updating approach is demonstrated using a case study from Northern Ireland where the history of mineral prospecting for precious and base metals dates from the 18th century. Vein-hosted, strata-bound and volcanogenic occurrences of mineralisation are found. The geostatistical technique was used to improve the resolution of soil geochemistry, collected one sample per 2 km2, by integrating more closely measured airborne geophysical data from the GSNI Tellus Survey, measured over a footprint of 65 x 200 m. The directly measured geochemistry data were considered as primary data in the Bayesian approach and the airborne radiometric data were used as secondary data. The approach produced more detailed updated maps and in particular maximized information on mapped estimates of zinc, copper and lead. Greater delineation of an elongated northwest/southeast trending zone in the updated maps strengthened the potential to investigate stratabound base metal deposits.

The Aquivion short-side-chain (SSC) perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer was adopted in catalyst layers (CL) of polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysers (PEMWE) instead of long-side-chain (LSC) Nafion ionomer. The effects of SSC ionomer content in CL for oxygen evolution reaction were studied in half cell with cyclic voltammetry and steady state linear sweep. In a single cell test the MEA with SSC-PFSA Aquivion ionomer exhibited better thermal stability than the one with LSC-PFSA Nafion ionomer at 90 °C. The cell voltage at a current density of 1 A cm was 1.63 V at 90 °C using the SSC-PFSA Aquivion ionomer binder, Nafion 117 membrane, and without back pressurizing. In a continuous operation the cell voltage degradation rate of the MEA using Aquivion ionomer binder was only about 0.82 mV h.
