Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) was used to monitor the mass changes on a quartz crystal surface containing immobilized lectins that interacted with carbohydrates. The strategy for lectin immobilization was developed on the basis of a multilayer system composed of Au-cystamine-glutaraldehyde-lectin. Each step of the immobilization procedure was confirmed by FTIR analysis. The system was used to study the interactions of Concanavalin A (ConA) with maltose and Jacalin with Fetuin. The real-time binding of different concentrations of carbohydrate to the immobilized lectin was monitored by means of QCM measurements and the data obtained allowed for the construction of Langmuir isotherm curves. The association constants determined for the specific interactions analyzed here were (6.4 +/- 0.2) X 10(4) M-1 for Jacalin-Fetuin and (4.5 +/- 0.1) x 10(2) M-1 for ConA-maltose. These results indicate that the QCM constitutes a suitable method for the analysis of lectin-carbohydrate interactions, even when assaying low molecular mass ligands such as disaccharides. The synthesis and characterization of a new organic ligand monooctyldiphenylphosphinate (L) is described, as well as a new Eu(3+) diketonate complex [Eu(tta)(3)(L)(2)] (tta = thenoyltrifluoracetone). The ligand (L) was formed by substitution reaction (80% yield) and characterized by uni- and bidimensional (1)H, (13)C and (31)P NMR experiments, to confirm its molecular structure. The coordination of (L) to Eu(3+) in the complex [Eu(tta)(3)(L)(2)] was confirmed by FT-IR spectra. The emission spectra present the same profile when excited in Eu(3+) or in the ligands, suggesting an energy transfer from ligands to Eu(3+) ions. The emission spectra of the precursor [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)], and [Eu(tta)(3)(L(2))] present bands arising from f-f intra-configurational transitions. The only (5)D(0)-(7)F(0) transition shows the presence of at least one site without symmetry center. The FWHM of such transition is 7 cm(-1) and 57 cm(-1) for [Eu(tta)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] and [Eu(tta)(3)(L)(2)] complexes, respectively. This widening is provided by the presence of large groups around Eu(3+) ion. The calculated intensity parameters Omega(2) and Omega(4) show that the interaction features between center-ion and ligand are different; the small value of Omega(4) is related to long range effects of alkyl chain. The Langmuir isotherms of this ligand and complex have been investigated although their hydrolysis in water subphase does not allow stable monolayers. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report optical and morphological properties of poly(2-methoxy-5-hexyloxy-p-phenylenevinylene) (OC1OC6-PPV) films processed by casting, spin-coating (SC) and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) techniques. The absorption spectra are practically the same, with an absorption maximum at approximately at 500 nm. For the photoluminescence (PL) spectra at low temperature (T=10K), a small but significant difference was noted in the cast film, in comparison with the LB and SC films. The zero-phonon transition shifted from 609 nm for the LB film to 615 and 621 nm for the SC and cast films, respectively. At room temperature, the PL spectra are similar for all films, and blue shifted by ca. 25 nm in comparison with the spectra at low temperature due to thermal disorder. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) we inferred that the distinctive behavior of the cast film, probably associated with structural defects, is related to the large thickness of this film. The surface roughness, which was surprisingly higher for the LB film, apparently played no role in the emission properties of OC1OC6-PPV films.

We report the preparation of direct hexagonal liquid crystals, constituted of oil-swollen cylinders arranged on a triangular lattice in water. The volume ratio of oil over water, rho, can be as large as 3.8. From the lattice parameter measured by small-angle X-ray scattering, we show that all the oil is indeed incorporated into the cylinders, thus allowing the diameter of the cylinders to be controlled over one decade range, provided that the ionic strength of the aqueous medium and rho are varied concomitantly. These hexagonal swollen liquid crystals (SLCs) have been first reported with sodium dodecyl sulfate as anionic surfactant, cyclohexane as solvent, 1-pentanol as co-surfactant, and sodium chloride as salt (Ramos, L.; Fabre, P. Langmuir 1997, 13, 13). The stability of these liquid crystals is investigated when the pH of the aqueous medium or the chemical nature of the components (salt and surfactant) is changed. We demonstrate that the range of stability is quite extended, rendering swollen hexagonal phases potentially useful for the fabrication of nanomaterials. As illustrations, we finally show that gelation of inorganic particles in the continuous aqueous medium of a SLC and polymerization within the oil-swollen cylinders of a SLC can be conducted without disrupting the hexagonal order of the system.

Composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from polyaniline and cadmium stearate have been irradiated with ionizing X-rays for various exposure times. In the initial stages of X-ray irradiation the absorption peak at 580 nm of an as-deposited film was seen to decrease with a concomitant increase in the absorption in the long wavelength region (700-1100 nm). Upon prolonging the irradiation, the absorption maximum shifted to 800 nm with the LB film color changing to green, characteristic of acid doped polyaniline. The changes in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra upon irradiation are also similar to those observed upon acid doping of polyaniline. When compared with acid doping, two major differences were observed for the LB films exposed to X-rays. First, the packing order of the cadmium stearate domains in the composite LB films - as observed by X-ray diffraction - is not affected by the X-ray irradiation. In addition, no significant increase in the DC conductivity was noted after the X-ray exposure whereas similar LB films have their conductivity increased by an order of magnitude upon acid doping. These differences may be explained by considering that the inter-domain contribution to the conductivity is increased by the acid doping because the insulating cadmium stearate domains are destroyed, which does not occur with the X-ray irradiation. Nanostructured films of lignin (macromolecule extracted from sugar cane bagasse), polypyrrole (conducting polymer) and bis butylimido perylene (organic dye) were used in the detection of trace levels of fluorine (from H2SiF6), chlorine (from NaCIO), Pb+2, Cu+2, and Cd+2 in aqueous solutions. Langmuir monolayers on ultrapure water were characterised by surface pressure-mean molecular area (II-A) isotherms. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films were transferred onto gold interdigitated electrodes and used as individual sensing units of an electronic tongue system. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were taken with the sensor immersed into aqueous solutions containing the ions described above in different molar concentrations. Fourier transform infrared absorption (FTIR) was employed to identify possible interactions between the LB films and the analytes in solution, and no significant changes could be observed in the FTIR spectra of BuPTCD and Ppy. Therefore, the results for lignin point to an interaction involving the electronic cloud of the phenyl groups with the metallic ions.

Products from the spontaneous reaction of a long-chain arenediazonium salt, 2,6-dimethyl-4-hexadecylbenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate(16-ArN2BF4), in aqueous micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)? are used to estimate the local concentration of chloride and bromide ions at the micellar surface. The arenediazonium ion, 16-ArN2+, which is totally bound to the SDS micelle, reacts by rate-determining loss of N-2 to give an aryl cation that traps available nucleophiles, i,e., H2O, Cl-, and Br-, to give stable phenol, 16-ArOH, and halobenzene products, 16-ArCl and 16-ArBr, respectively. Product yields, determined by HPLC, are related to local concentrations using calibration curves obtained from independent standards. The local concentrations determined by this method are consistent with co-ion concentrations calculated, using a cell model, by numerical integration of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) taking into account salt-induced micellar growth. The salt dependence of the intel facial concentrations of Cl- and Br- are identical. indicating no specific interactions in the interfacial co-ion compartment. PBE calculations predict that, in micellar SDS, increasing the concentration of a particular halide salt (NaX) at constant concentration of another halide (NaY) should result in an increase in the local concentrations of both co-ions. Using this chemical-trapping method, this prediction was demonstrated experimentally.

Dynamic light scattering, surface tension, and clouding temperature have been monitored to elucidate the solution properties of mixed micelles formed between the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic surfactant pentaethylene glycol mono-n-dodecyl ether (C12E5) over a wide range of surfactant concentration and temperature. Addition of 0.1 M NaCl shifts the relaxational modes to higher frequency and lowers the clouding temperature (T-c) of the nonionic surfactant solution by about 1 degrees C compared to the salt-free system. T-c for the mixed surfactant solutions is higher than that of the binary C12E5 solutions and depends sensitively on the concentration of the two surfactants but increases only slightly when the total surfactant concentration is increased at a given molar C12E5/SDS concentration ratio. With C12E5/SDS = 5.7, for example, T-c is 46.0 and 47.5 degrees C, respectively, at 5 and 70 mM of C12E5 the mixed solutions are homogeneous and stable and contain nonspherical micelles, which are close to monodisperse over a range of surfactant concentrations and temperature. The mixed system has a lower Krafft point than binary SDS solutions and shows an approximately ideal behavior in contrast to the binary C12E5 solution. The hydrodynamic radius (RH) of the mixed micelle increases with temperature as do C12E5 micelles in the binary solutions and also with increasing C12E5/SDS ratio. At 25 degrees C, the critical micelle concentration of the mixed solution lies between those of the individual surfactants and decreases as the C12E5/SDS ratio is increased.

Four lignin samples were extracted from sugar cane bagasse using four different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and 1-butanol) via the organosolv-CO2 supercritical pulping process. Langmuir films were characterized by surface pressure vs mean molecular area (Pi-A) isotherms to exploit information at the molecular level carrying out stability tests, cycles of compression/expansion (hysteresis), subphase temperature variations, and metallic ions dissolved into the water subphase at different concentrations. Briefly, it was observed that these lignins are relatively stable on the water surface when compared to those obtained via different extraction processes. Besides, the Pi-A isotherms are shifted to smaller molecular areas at higher subphase temperatures and to larger molecular areas when the metallic ions are dissolved into the subphase. The results are related to the formation of stable aggregates (domains) onto the water subphase by these lignins, as shown in the Pi-A isotherms. It was found as well that the most stable lignin monolayer onto the water subphase is that extracted with 1-butanol. Homogeneous Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of this lignin could be produced as confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and the cumulative transfer parameter. In addition, FTIR analysis showed that this lignin LB film is structured in a way that the phenyl groups are organized preferentially parallel to the substrate surface. Further, these LB films were deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes and ITO and applied in studies involving the detection of Cd+2 ions in aqueous solutions at low concentration levels throughimpedance spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. FTIR spectroscopy was carried out before and after soaking the thin films into Cd+2 aqueous solutions, revealing a possible physical interaction between the lignin phenyl groups and the heavy metal ions. The importance of using nanostructured systems is demonstrated as well by comparing both LB and cast films.
