Over the last 20 years, environmental management in Queensland has moved from the policy backwaters of government to the front line of operations by way of regulatory enforcement, industry programs and incentives. When the new Queensland Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EPA) came into effect, the business of environmental management has become a central feature of urban and rural development activity. The concept of environmentally sustainable development (ESD), has given life to the precautionary principle as a way for planners and regulators to place relevant controls on development. The planning, development and operation of pig farming systems has been effected by the new regulatory framework. Ever more definitive standards and approval permits have emerged which endeavour to achieve ESD. With these modern planning instruments in place, rural industry sectors have become, quite legitimately, concerned about future opportunities for research and innovation. This paper asserts that the capacity to engage in research and to achieve innovation in the pork producing industry is not hindered by Queensland environmental regulation frameworks. However, in order for research and innovation to prosper within these frameworks, some protocols need to be followed by the industry. What is at stake is community confidence.

Background The purpose of this presentation is to outline the relevance of the categorization of the load regime data to assess the functional output and usage of the prosthesis of lower limb amputees. The objectives are • To highlight the need for categorisation of activities of daily living • To present a categorization of load regime applied on residuum, • To present some descriptors of the four types of activity that could be detected, • To provide an example the results for a case. Methods The load applied on the osseointegrated fixation of one transfemoral amputee was recorded using a portable kinetic system for 5 hours. The load applied on the residuum was divided in four types of activities corresponding to inactivity, stationary loading, localized locomotion and directional locomotion as detailed in previously publications. Results The periods of directional locomotion, localized locomotion, and stationary loading occurred 44%, 34%, and 22% of recording time and each accounted for 51%, 38%, and 12% of the duration of the periods of activity, respectively. The absolute maximum force during directional locomotion, localized locomotion, and stationary loading was 19%, 15%, and 8% of the body weight on the anteroposterior axis, 20%, 19%, and 12% on the mediolateral axis, and 121%, 106%, and 99% on the long axis. A total of 2,783 gait cycles were recorded. Discussion Approximately 10% more gait cycles and 50% more of the total impulse than conventional analyses were identified. The proposed categorization and apparatus have the potential to complement conventional instruments, particularly for difficult cases.

The hardware and the software details of a user-friendly, simple, flexible and inexpensive pulse programmer using programmable counters interfaced to a microprocessor are described. The control of the various parameters that are required for NMR applications is implemented using the microprocessor. The basic hardware is extendable to other applications which require programmable pulse trains.

A new four-hole cylindrical cantilever probe is described which could be used for three-dimensional flow surveys. The probe is more compact than the usual cylindrical type allowing for closer approach to a boundary. The probe is robust and gives good reproducibility. It can be used for a wide range of pitch angle. Review of Scientific Instruments is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

The basic goal of a proteomic microchip is to achieve efficient and sensitive high throughput protein analyses, automatically carrying out several measurements in parallel. A protein microchip would either detect a single protein or a large set of proteins for diagnostic purposes, basic proteome or functional analysis. Such analyses would include e.g. interactomics, general protein expression studies, detecting structural alterations or secondary modifications. Visualization of the results may occur by simple immunoreactions, general or specific labelling, or mass spectrometry. For this purpose we have manufactured chip-based proteome analysis devices that utilize the classical polymer gel electrophoresis technology to run one and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis separations of proteins in just a smaller size. In total, we manufactured three functional prototypes of which one performed a miniaturized one-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1-DE) separation, the second and third preformed two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) separations. These microchips were successfully used to separate and characterize a set of predefined standard proteins, cell and tissue samples. Also, the miniaturized 2-DE (ComPress-2DE) chip presents a novel way of combining the 1st and 2nd dimensional separations, thus avoiding manual handling of the gels, eliminate cross-contamination, and make analyses faster and repeatability better. They all showed the advantages of miniaturization over the commercial devices; such as fast analysis, low sample- and reagent consumption, high sensitivity, high repeatability and inexpensive performance. All these instruments have the potential to be fully automated due to their easy-to-use set-up.

A circuit capable of producing bipolar square pulses of voltages up to +or-400 V, employing an integrated circuit timer and two mercury wetted relays is described. The frequency of the pulses can be varied from a cycle min-1 to 2 kHz. A variable temperature sample chamber and the temperature control and measurement circuits are also described. The performance of the circuit is evaluated using samples of TGS and NaNO2.
