Forward Osmosis (FO) can be applied to recover water from the pre-treatment sludge of seawater reverse osmosis process. This study investigated the effect of the concentration of two draw solutions (MgCl2 and NaCl) in the reduction of Fe(OH)3 sludge volume and the effect of cross flow velocity on flux through FO membrane. Higher the concentration of NaCl and MgCl2 higher the water flux observed. However, the percentage increase was not significant due to the occurrence of internal concentration polarisation. MgCl2 draws marginally increased water flux than NaCl, when the conditions of feed and draw solutions were similar. Increase in cross flow velocity (from 0.25 to 1.0 m/s) marginally changed the flux with both draw solutions as higher cross flow velocities were unproductive to beat the external CP effect along the membrane surface. However, at 1 m/s, highest fluxes were obtained for both draw solutions.

In this study, permeate from a hollow fiber polyethylene (PE) membrane bio-reactor (MBR) system treating synthetic agricultural wastewater was fed into a cellulose acetate brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO30 2540) membrane system; three different trans-membranes pressures (TMPs) of 1000, 2500, and 4000 kPa were selected to evaluate the system performance in terms of general operating parameters as well as the removal of chosen important potential fouling water quality parameters. The results showed that highest corrected permeate flux rate was at a TMP of 2500 kPa, whereas lowest recorded at a TMP of 4000 kPa. Similar situation prevailed in water recovery rate. But temperature corrected specific fluxes decreased as the applied TMPs increased. In all selected TMPs, more than 96% of salinity was removed. Permeate from MBR as feed to reverse osmosis required frequent chemical cleaning than the microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF) permeates and granular media filter (GMF) filtered in order to maintain the required rate of product water. One of the reasons for this frequent chemical cleaning is due to higher total organic carbon as well as total nitrogen (TN) in the MBR permeate. This result needs to be further evaluated through field trials.

This study focused on the performance of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) in the removal of ametryn. Here, we investigated the effects of the applied pressure and ionic conditions on the removal of ametryn from water. It was found that the adsorption of ametryn onto NF membrane to decrease with the increase in ionic strength. Increased interaction between the NaCl electrolyte and the membrane surface is considered as the reason for the reduction in the adsorption. However, adsorption of ametryn onto the RO membrane did not show any trend. The removal of ametryn by NF and RO found to increase with the increase in the ionic strength. Retention of electrolyte salt (NaCl) on the membrane surface tends to decrease the membrane pore size which in turn increases the removal of ametryn at higher ionic strengths. It was found that up to 92% of ametryn could be removed using RO.

This study focuses on volume reduction of pre-treatment sludge as well as on dilution of reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate through emerging forward osmosis (FO) technology where RO concentrate draws water from the pre-treatment sludge (feed solution) in order to reduce pre-treatment sludge volume and increase the RO water recovery. Experiments were carried out using two different types of sludge i.e. (1) synthetic pre-treatment sludge (Lab sludge) which has lower salinity and (2) actual sludge from Perth Seawater Desalination Plant, Australia (Perth Seawater Desalination Plant (PSDP) sludge) which has higher salinity. Effect of membrane orientation (FO and pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) modes) and temperature of pre-treatment sludge on permeate water flux was investigated. There was a significant increase in water flux from 3.2 to 10.2 LMH (i.e. ~3 times higher) when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for Lab sludge in PRO mode. However, there is no significant effect of temperature on water flux in FO mode for Lab sludge. On the contrary for PSPD sludge, there was no effect on water flux with increase in temperature at PRO mode. Dissolved ions in the porous side increased the severity of concentrative internal concentration polarization; hence, it could reduce the flux. There was no significant change in water flux when temperature increased from 20 to 40°C for PSDP sludge in FO mode. However, higher amount of water has permeated from Lab sludge compared to PSDP sludge in FO mode. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved.

In this study, different combinations of feed stream such as 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 M of CaCl2 were, respectively, added with 1.0, 0.9 and 0.8 M of NaCl while maintaining the draw solution concentration at either 2.0 M of NaCl or CaCl2 in order to compare likely changes to the flux generated when the feed stream contained NaCl only. The results obtained showed that more constituents in feed stream generated lesser flux. Increase in CaCl2 concentration in feed stream resulted in more severe dilutive internal concentration polarisation (DICP) and hence, reduction in the performance ratio. The temperature and distribution of aggregated particle size also played a significant role in the overall performance of forward osmosis process. Further analysis showed that there is a relationship between the normalised driving force and flux behaviour which is governed by the effect of DICP. Additionally, the reflection coefficient was not unity as less than 2% traces of salt was found to permeate alongside with water towards the draw solution side. © 2014 © 2014 Balaban Desalination Publications. Water supply and demand planning is often conducted independently of social and economic strategies. There are presently no comprehensive life-cycle approaches to modelling urban water balances that incorporate economic feedbacks, such as tariff adjustment, which can in turn create a financing capacity for investment responses to low reservoir levels. This paper addresses this gap, and presents a system dynamics model that augments the usual water utility representation of the physical linkages of water grids, by adding inter-connected feedback loops in tariff structures, demand levels and financing capacity. The model, applied in the south-east Queensland region in Australia, enables simulation of alternatives and analysis of stocks and flows around a grid or portfolio of bulk supplies including an increasing proportion of rain-independent desalination plants. Such rain-independent water production plants complement the rain-dependent sources in the region and can potentially offer indefinite water security at a price. The study also shows how an alternative temporary drought pricing regime not only defers costly bulk supply infrastructure but actually generates greater price stability than traditional pricing approaches. The model has implications for water supply planners seeking to pro-actively plan, justify and finance portfolios of rain-dependent and rain-independent bulk water supply infrastructure. Interestingly, the modelling showed that a temporary drought pricing regime not only lowers the frequency and severity of water insecurity events but also reduces the long-run marginal cost of water supply for the region when compared to traditional reactive planning approaches that focus on restrictions to affect demand in scarcity periods.

Round-leaf Pomaderris Pomaderris vacciniifolia F. Muell. ex Reissek (Rhamnaceae) is a Victorian endemic shrub listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 and critically endangeredunder the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. A review of the available literature for P. vacciniifolia indicated most information is anecdotal or found in unpublished works. Better understanding of the ecology of P. vacciniifolia may help explain why it is vulnerable, and enhance future management. Future research should focus towards better understanding of P. vacciniifolia habitat, reproductive ecology, seed dispersal mechanisms and competitive ability and how these compare with more common sympatric congeners, to determine whether any differences could explain the relative success of these species. Targeted searches for this species on public and private land are warranted to reveal additional populations and fully appreciate the distribution of this species. Colour removal and the flux behaviour of nanofiltration (NF-DOW FILMTEC-NF245) and forward osmosis (FO-a flat sheet cellulose triacetate membrane with a woven embedded backing support) membranes were investigated in this study. The NF membrane was employed to perform dye removal experiments with aqueous solutions containing 15 g/L of NaCl and different concentrations of Acid Green 25, Remazol Brilliant Orange FR and Remazol Blue BR dyes. The increase in dye concentration resulted in a decline in water permeability and an increase in colour removal. When the concentrations of dye solutions varied from 250 to 1000 mg/L, at 0.8 bar of trans-membrane pressure, the NF system exhibited a steady permeate flux of more 30 L/m2h and a colour removal of more than 99%; salt rejection was more than 20.0%. Furthermore, the FO system possessed high dye rejection efficiency (almost 100%), with low permeate flux of around 2.0 L/m2h, when using dye solutions as feed streams and seawater as draw stream. The mode of operation (either FO or pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) did not change the flux significantly but PRO mode always produced higher fluxes than FO mode under the operating conditions used in this study. While both NF and FO can be used to reduce the volume of effluent containing dyes from textile industries, the energy spent in NF on applied pressure can be substituted by the osmotic pressure of draw solution in FO when concentrated draw solutions such as sea water or reverse osmosis concentrate are readily available.

This study explored community readiness to support ex-prisoner reintegration; a sentencing objective requiring active community participation. Findings indicate the community support reintegration. Certain conditions maximised support. Abstract reintegrative policy was endorsed over personal involvement in ex-prisoner reintegration; ex-prisoners demonstrating an ability to be ‘redeemed’ and non-stereotypical ex-offender-types received greater support.

Liquid plasma, produced by nanosecond pulses, provides an efficient and simple way to fabricate a nanocomposite architecture of Co3O4/CNTs from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and clusters of Co3O4 nanoparticles in deionized water. The crucial feature of the composite's structure is that Co3O4 nanoparticle clusters are uniformly dispersed and anchored to CNT networks in which Co3O4 guarantees high electrochemical reactivity towards sodium, and CNTs provide conductivity and stabilize the anode structure. We demonstrated that the Co3O4/CNT nanocomposite is capable of delivering a stable and high capacity of 403 mA h g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles where the sodium uptake/extract is confirmed in the way of reversible conversion reaction by adopting ex situ techniques. The rate capability of the composite is significantly improved and its reversible capacity is measured to be 212 mA h g(-1) at 1.6 A g(-1) and 190 mA h g(-1) at 3.2 A g(-1), respectively. Due to the simple synthesis technique with high electrochemical performance, Co3O4/CNT nanocomposites have great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Aim : To determine the internalization and protective effects of potential ophthalmic formulations and nanoformulated natural proteins in ex-vivo bovine corneal alkali burn model.

Methods : The bovine cornea obtained were subjected to the 0.5 N NaOH insult that induced alkali burn and inflammation as observed in the in vivo situation. The toxic effects of the nanoformulation were evaluated in the normal and insult induced cornea using histological analysis. Internalization studies were carried out using in vivo imaging and analysis (IVIS, PerkinElmer, USA).

Results : The nanoformulations employed in this study showed no obvious changes in the integrity of the cornea. Further, improvements in the light transmittance and reduced inflammation were observed. The IVIS showed a dose dependant increase in the uptake of the nanoformulations with time.

Conclusion : The nanoformulated bovine lactoferrin and SurR9-C84A (SR9) proteins evaluated in the ex vivo bovine corneal irritation model is the first of its kind, and we report here the non-toxic and therapeutic potential of these formulations for topical applications.
