National identity in Timor-Leste : a brief comparative study

The papers in this eduted and refereed volume were first presented at the Timor-Leste Studies Association's Understanding Timor-Leste conference (UNTL, Dili, 2-3 July 2009). Papers in the collection are divided into four language sections (Tetum-Dili, Portuguese, English and Bahasa Indonesia), along with a special section on Adult and Popular education.

The plan to increase Fiji's rice production - is it worthwhile?

In a recent initiative, the Fiji government has established a revitalisation program for the rice industry, with assistance expected from the Republic of China, India and Indonesia. Using the computable general equilibrium model of the Fijian economy, the economy-wide impact of a 40 per cent increase in rice production is simulated. This analysis finds that even such a large increase in production would have an insignificant impact on Fiji's economic growth.

Avoiding the cause : Australia and political persecution in West Papua

Despite formally acknowledging that political persecution exists in West Papua by granting 43 West Papuans TPVs on the grounds that if they were forcibly returned they would face a well founded fear of persecution, the Australian Government treats the symptoms of the problem - deterring further boat people by making it more difficult for them to assert their asylum claims - than its cause - Indonesia's persecution of independence activists in the province

Rethinking the region

This thesis explores the shift in focus of Australian regional defence and foreign policy away from Malaysia and towards Indonesia between 1965 and 1971. It finds that this shift was caused more by the consequences of Britain's military withdrawal from Malaysia and Singapore than by Suharto's accession to power.

Activating civil society : Indonesian NGOs and regime transition ; case study

This thesis found that in post-Soeharto Indonesia, a theoretical approach that used civil society as the prism through which to examine more subtle processes of power in group situations, proved more insightful (both for researchers and practioners) than relying on an examination of the strength or the development of civil society.

Transformational analysis of the national interest

This thesis explains the independence of East Timor by investigating the idea of "national interest". It shows how the policymakers' "national interest" calculations were opposed by a transnational solidarity movement. It concludes that the Australian government was compelled to deploy peacekeepers despite its best efforts to the contrary.

Leading a process of educational change in an Indonesian school

The thesis presents an autobiographical case study of a principal, with a focus on the various theoretical and experiential influences on the development of her understanding and practice of educational leadership in Australia and overseas. A close analysis is made of her current practice of educational leadership in Indonesia.

Visualising clientelism in the Indonesian political tabloids 1998-2001

The thesis uses a discourse analysis approach to examine the visual grammar and the political meanings of the front cover designs of the Indonesian political tabloids in the period 1998-2001 and argues that the meanings show that Indonesian politics operates on the basis of clientelism.

Dutch Indonesians in Australia : second-generation identity in the diaspora

Exploring "local" and "transnational" relationships, this research shows that second-generation relationships with the homeland and with other members in the diaspora are less important regarding (diasporic) identity formation than realities of sedentary diasporic life (in Australia) and that "locality" and diaspora are not opposing concepts but theoretically and practically interconnected.

Communicative language teaching of a foreign language : the Indonesian 1984 senior high school English syllabus

This thesis examines the implementation of the 1984 English syllabus, which is claimed to be communicative. The study was conducted in three government Senior High Schools in Singaraja, northern Bali. The results indicate that the implementation of the Communicative Approach has been constrained by the limited resources, inadequate professional development and the national examination system, the EBTANAS.

Acquisition of invasion‐inhibitory antibodies specific for the 19‐kDa fragment of merozoite surface protein 1 in a transmigrant population requires multiple infections

Antibodies against the 19 kDa C‐terminal fragment of merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP119) are a major component of the invasion‐inhibitory response in individuals immune to malaria. We report here the acquisition of MSP119‐specific invasion‐inhibitory antibodies in a group of transmigrants who experienced their sequential malaria infections during settlement in an area of Indonesia where malaria is highly endemic. We used 2 transgenic Plasmodium falciparum parasite lines that expressed either endogenous MSP119 or the homologous region from P. chabaudi to measure the MSP119‐specific invasion‐inhibitory antibodies. The results revealed that the acquisition of MSP119‐specific invasion‐inhibitory antibodies required 2 or more P. falciparum infections. In contrast, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays on the same serum samples showed that MSP119‐specific antibodies are present after the first malaria infection. This delay in the acquisition of functional antibodies by residents of areas where malaria is endemic is consistent with the observation that multiple malaria infections are required before clinical immunity is acquired.

Web-text : perceptions of digital reading skills in the ESL classroom

New strategies required in Web reading and digital writing cause previous notions of literacy to be reshaped and compel teachers to rethink classroom reading practice. The aim of this paper is to compare student perceptions of reading skills needed in the traditional print- text mode with the skills needed to read and gather information on the Web. Do students perceive reading as different on the Web? Are there implications for reading classroom teachers? This research was conducted in a medium-sized suburban government primary school of 580 students from 72 different countries. The participants were 48 students in two grade-six classes, with a focus on 12 English as second language (ESL) students' responses. These students came from Taiwan, China, India, Malaysia, Poland and Bhutan. The study was replicated in an adult ELICOS language centre environment with the authors own class of 18 students from China, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Japan. Different student expectations of Web-text compared to paper-text were evident. This research adds to our constantly evolving notions of literacy embracing technology and can be applied to primary, secondary and tertiary levels of ESL teaching practice.

Exploring the Australian Science Curriculum : A way forward?

There is considerable international concern about science education based on the number of students engaged with science and mathematics, and research showing student disenchantment with school science curricula. ln this presentation I will trace through a history of concerns with school science, and describe the recommendations and curriculum responses to these concerns internationally and particularly in Australia. The new Australian Science Curriculum is based around ideas related to scientific literacy and inquiry curriculum, and includes science inquiry skills and science as a human endeavour' as major strands. I will describe the features of the course and raise the question - does it represent a productive way forward? The various aspects of the course are related to current directions in science education research, and examples will be given of my own involvement in national curriculum initiatives, into school-community links, and Deakin research into a pedagogy that focuses on student generation of representations, as examples of ways forward for improving student engagement with learning science.

Sovereignty and resistance : India, China and the Asian-African Conference, 1955

This thesis examines the Asian-African Conference at Bandung, Indonesia in 1955 from a broad historical perspective. It presents evidence that the assertion of independent Asian foreign policy - non-aligned and communist led by India and China - signalled a more significant, long-term shift in West-East realtions than has been previously identified.
