Professional experience in new times: issues and responses to a changing education landscape

This paper discusses policy and practice relevant to teacher education and professional experience programs in Australia, aiming to assist not only reading our past and present, but also offering strategic direction with respect to the challenges and opportunities that are emerging within the Australian context. A meta-analysis of current major trends in Australian educational reform and the implications of an 'education revolution' for professional experience are discussed. The paper maps and examines broadly key education agendas of 'productivity, participation and quality'. In relation to these agendas, significant policy trends are identified under the headings of partnerships, preparation and professional learning, and the implications of each for the field of teacher education and professional experience are explored. Some comparisons with similar reforms that have occurred in Scotland and England are offered to provide insights and alternative directions for those working in the field. Finally, a range of possibilities and suggestions, along with cautionary tales of locally based professional experience practices, are provided.

Understanding euthanasia debate : the Northern Territory experience in historical context

The thesis analyses the principles and philosophies behind the public submissions into the Northern Territory's Rights of the Terminally Ill Act [1995], which mirror wider debate over euthanasia since 1945. It argues that religious prohibitions against euthanasia have been largely replaced by slippery slope arguments that effectively obstruct law reform.

International postgraduate students experience in a UK university : lessons for academic practice

This paper reports on a study of the international postgraduate student experience in a United Kingdom (UK) university, using a case study approach. Looking at both the academic and non academic experience of students in the university, the paper attempts to identify differences in perceptions of staff and students on key issues related to the international student experience. The limited sample of this study is compensated for by the quality and depth of data obtained from in-depth interviews with students and staff in one UK university. Results indicate significant convergence of perceptions in relation to the quality of education in the UK though the issues of cultural integration, English language and inadequate student support and the serious threat these issues pose to the quality of experience for students. The paper identifies five key gaps in the way staff and students conceptualise the postgraduate student experience and concludes with suggestions for how management might narrow these gaps in the higher education context.

Aesthetic experience and innovation in practice–led research

Within the context of ERA, this paper addresses the question of how we might provide practitioners with a framework for understanding creative arts research as the production of new knowledge. Drawing on the thought of Julia Kristeva, it examines the aesthetic underpinnings of discovery and the implications and significance of this for research training and the development of more effective pedagogies both within and beyond the university.
Kristeva’s work constitutes both an implicit and explicit critique of science allowing us to conceive of artistic research as an experiential and performative production of knowledge. As a mode of enquiry, artistic practice reveals the inextricable and necessary relationship between practice and theory, interpretation and making, art and life. This interrelationship underpins the aesthetic dimension of revolutionary practice and its production of unfamiliar or mutant forms of knowledge that is often difficult to grasp in terms of its capacity to engender social change and innovation. In the context of creative arts practice as research, the notion of experience-in-practice indicates that interpretation and analysis must fall to the practitioner-researcher, himself or herself, rather than to another person who has been external to the procedures of making, to trace the significant experiential, subjective and emergent processes involved in the production of the work that allows it to reveal the new. This is necessary if the generative and revolutionary impact of artistic research is to be fully understood in the wider research arena. In the final part of this paper, I will apply and illustrate these ideas through an analysis of a number of artistic research projects successfully completed in Australia.

Sustaining regional environmental NGOs in Latin America and Eastern Europe : considering the experience of the FARN and the REC

Democratisation presents opportunities and threats to non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Greater openness associated with democratic regimes provides opportunities for participation and influence not previously available. At the same time, increasing state capacity may threaten the continued relevance of NGOs. The article examines the Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (FARN) of Argentina and the Regional Environmental Center (REC) of eastern Europe to assess environmental support organisations in post-authoritarian contexts. The aims of the article are to identify opportunities and threats to environmental support organisations and to examine the strategies they adopt to advance their interests and achieve their goals.

It was an experience that totally blew up in my face : Steve Railsback and Turkey shoot

The schlock horror film Turkey Shoot is widely regarded as one of the most disreputable Australian exploitation titles in a genre already well noted for controversy. This short article frames the controversies that surround the film from production to critical reception, which sets the scene for an interview by Mark Harley with the film's star Steve Railsback, who reflects on the movie's production, his role, the controversy and the film's reception.

Collaborative R&D project partner experience in the Australian CRC Program : a theoretical framework

The paper focuses on commercially-oriented cross-sector R&D collaborative projects carried out within Australian Cooperative Research Centres. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the participants’ experience of such collaborative projects, and the relationship between partner experience and project outcomes. It is hypothesized that collaborative projects that have both a strong relationship focus, in terms relational trust, and a strong task focus, in terms of project management capability, are more likely to be positively experienced by the participants. Four antecedent variables, derived from the literature and preliminary research, are proposed: credible commitments, previous collaboration experience, cross-sector management capability, and communication intensity. The model is to be empirically tested through a survey of CRC project leaders.
