The effect of nanometer anatase TiO2 was investigated on the photocatalytic degradation of phenanthrene on soil surfaces under a variety of conditions. After being spiked with phenanthrene, soil samples loaded with different amounts of TiO2 (0 wt.%, 1 wt.%, 2 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 4 wt.%) were exposed to UV-light irradiation for 25 hr. The results indicated that the photocatalytic degradation of phenanthrene followed the pseudo first-order kinetics. TiO2 significantly accelerated the degradation of phenanthrene with the half-life reduced from 45.90 to 31.36 hr for TiO2 loading of 0 wt.% and 4 wt.%, respectively. In addition, the effects of H2O2, light intensity and humic acid on the degradation of phenanthrene were investigated. The degradation of phenanthrene increased with the concentration of H2O2, light intensity and the concentration of humic acids. It has been demonstrated that the photocatalytic method in the presence of nanometer anatase TiO2 was a very promising technology for the treatments of soil polluted with organic substances in the future.

Early studies of HIV infection dynamics suggested that virus-producing HIV-infected cells had an average half-life of approximately 1 day. However, whether this average behavior is reflective of the dynamics of individual infected cells is unclear. Here, we use HIV-enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) constructs and flow cytometry sorting to explore the dynamics of cell infection, viral protein production, and cell death in vitro. By following the numbers of productively infected cells expressing EGFP over time, we show that infected cell death slows down over time. Although infected cell death in vivo could be very different, our results suggest that the constant decay of cell numbers observed in vivo during antiretroviral treatment could reflect a balance of cell death and delayed viral protein production. We observe no correlation between viral protein production and death rate of productively infected cells, showing that viral protein production is not likely to be the sole determinant of the death of HIV-infected cells. Finally, we show that all observed features can be reproduced by a simple model in which infected cells have broad distributions of productive life spans, times to start viral protein production, and viral protein production rates. This broad spectrum of the level and timing of viral protein production provides new insights into the behavior and characteristics of HIV-infected cells.

Here, we report the overexpression, purification, and characterization of the transcriptional activator fumarate and nitrate reductase regulator from the pathogenic bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (NmFNR). Like its homologue from Escherichia coli (EcFNR), NmFNR binds a 4Fe-4S cluster, which breaks down in the presence of oxygen to a 2Fe-2S cluster and subsequently to apo-FNR. The kinetics of NmFNR cluster disassembly in the presence of oxygen are 2–3× slower than those previously reported for wild-type EcFNR, but similar to constitutively active EcFNR* mutants, consistent with earlier work in which we reported that the activity of FNR-dependent promoters in N. meningitidis is only weakly inhibited by the presence of oxygen (Rock, J. D., Thomson, M. J., Read, R. C., and Moir, J. W. (2007) J. Bacteriol. 189, 1138–1144). NmFNR binds to DNA containing a consensus FNR box sequence, and this binding stabilizes the iron-sulfur cluster in the presence of oxygen. Partial degradation of the 4Fe-4S cluster to a 3Fe-4S occurs, and this form remains bound to the DNA. The 3Fe-4S cluster is converted spontaneously back to a 4Fe-4S cluster under subsequent anaerobic reducing conditions in the presence of ferrous iron. The finding that binding to DNA stabilizes FNR in the presence of oxygen such that it has a half-life of ∼30 min on the DNA has implications for our appreciation of how oxygen switches off FNR activatable genes in vivo.

This paper comprehensively investigates performance of evolutionary algorithms for design optimization of shell and tube heat exchangers (STHX). Genetic algorithm (GA), firefly algorithm (FA), and cuckoo search (CS) method are implemented for finding the optimal values for seven key design variables of the STHX model. ε-NTU method and Bell-Delaware procedure are used for thermal modeling of STHX and calculation of shell side heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. The purpose of STHX optimization is to maximize its thermal efficiency. Obtained results for several simulation optimizations indicate that GA is unable to find permissible and optimal solutions in the majority of cases. In contrast, design variables found by FA and CS always lead to maximum STHX efficiency. Also computational requirements of CS method are significantly less than FA method. As per optimization results, maximum efficiency (83.8%) can be achieved using several design configurations. However, these designs are bearing different dollar costs. Also it is found that the behavior of the majority of decision variables remains consistent in different runs of the FA and CS optimization processes.

The chronic systemic administration of d-Galactose in C57BL/6J mice showed a relatively high oxidative stress, amyloid-β expression and neuronal cell death. Enhanced expression of pyknotic nuclei, caspase-3 and reduced expression of neuronal integrity markers further confirmed the aforesaid insults. However, concomitant treatment with the recombinant protein (SurR9-C84A) and the anti-transferrin receptor antibody conjugated SurR9-C84A (SurR9+TFN) nanocarriers showed a significant improvement in the disease status and neuronal health. The beauty of this study is that the biodegradable Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanocarriers enhanced the biological half-life and the efficacy of the treatments. The nanocarriers were effective in lowering the amyloid-β expression, enhancing the neuronal integrity markers and maintaining the basal levels of endogenous survivin that is essential for evading the caspase activation and apoptosis. The current study herein reports for the first time that the brain targeted SurR9-C84A nanocarriers alleviated the d-Galactose induced neuronal insults and has potential for future brain targeted nanomedicine application.

This paper tests the convergence in per-capita carbon dioxide emissions for a collection of developed and developing countries using data spanning the period 1870-2002. For this purpose, three recently developed panel unit root tests that permit for dependence among the individual countries are employed. The results lend strong support in favor of convergence for the panel as a whole. Estimates of the speed of this convergence is also provided. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors are a class of oral antidiabetic drugs that improve glycaemic control without causing weight gain or increasing hypoglycaemic risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The eight available DPP-4 inhibitors, including alogliptin, anagliptin, gemigliptin, linagliptin, saxagliptin, sitagliptin, teneligliptin, and vildagliptin, are small molecules used orally with identical mechanism of action and similar safety profiles in patients with T2DM. DPP-4 inhibitors may be used as monotherapy or in double or triple combination with other oral glucose-lowering agents such as metformin, thiazolidinediones, or sulfonylureas. Although DPP-4 inhibitors have the same mode of action, they differ by some important pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties that may be clinically relevant in some patients. The main differences between the eight gliptins include: potency, target selectivity, oral bioavailability, elimination half-life, binding to plasma proteins, metabolic pathways, formation of active metabolite(s), main excretion routes, dosage adjustment for renal and liver insufficiency, and potential drug-drug interactions. The off-target inhibition of selective DPP-4 inhibitors is responsible for multiorgan toxicities such as immune dysfunction, impaired healing, and skin reactions. As a drug class, the DPP-4 inhibitors have become accepted in clinical practice due to their excellent tolerability profile, with a low risk of hypoglycaemia, a neutral effect on body weight, and once-daily dosing. It is unknown if DPP-4 inhibitors can prevent disease progression. More clinical studies are needed to validate the optimal regimens of DPP-4 inhibitors for the management of T2DM when their potential toxicities are closely monitored.

Pair trading is an old and well-known technique among traders. In this paper, we discuss an important element not commonly debated in Brazil: the cointegration between pairs, which would guarantee the spread stability. We run the Dickey-Fuller test to check cointegration, and then compare the results with non-cointegrated pairs. We found that the Sharpe ratio of cointegrated pairs is greater than the non-cointegrated. We also use the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equation in order to calculate the half-life of the pairs. Again, this improves their performance. Last, we use the leverage suggested by Kelly Formula, once again improving the results.

Neutron activation analysis and gamma-ray spectroscopy were used to determine the quantity of potassium and sodium in an ash sample of Tabebuia sp bombarded with thermal neutrons. These techniques, widely applied in nuclear physics, can be used in the context of wood science as an alternative for the usual physical chemistry methods applied in this area. The quantity of K and Na in an 8.60 +/- 0.10 mg of ash was determined as being 1.3 +/- 0.3 mg and 11.0 +/- 1.8 mu g, respectively. The ratio of Tabebuia sp converted into ash was also determined as 0.758 +/- 0.004%.
