Some novel ferrocenylphosphine-amidine ligands with central and planar chirality were prepared from (R,S-p)-PPFNH2-R 3 and its diastereomer (S,S-p)-PPFNH2 3a. The efficiency and diastereomeric impact of these ferrocenylphosphine-amidine ligands in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic substitution was examined, and up to 96% e.e. with 98% yield was achieved by the use of ligand (R,S-p)-4a with a methyl group in the amidino moiety. The results also indicated that (R)-central chirality and (S-p)-planar chirality in these ferrocenylphosphine-amidine ligands were matched for the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation. A series of novel ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands 6 were prepared by reaction of (R,S-p)-PPFNH2-R or (S,S-p)-PPFNH2 with a variety of m-substituted acetophenones. A different catalytic activity was observed between ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands and corresponding aldimine ligands. The efficiency and diastereomeric impact of these ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation were first investigated, and higher enantioselectivity of over 98% e.e. with 95% yield was obtained by the use of ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands. However, in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of aryl ketones, only 42% e.e. was obtained by the use of ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands compared to 90% e.e. with the use of aldimine ligands. A series of new chiral ligands derived from D-fructose have been synthesized and applied in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. Comparison of the enantioselectivities obtained with these ligands demonstrated that the catalytic properties are highly dependent upon the structure of ligands, a rational explanation of the structural effects on the catalytic properties is provided. A new copper-(Schiff-base) complex, derived from (S)-2-amino-1,1-di(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)propanol, 2-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzaldehyde and copper acetate monohydrate, was used as an efficient catalyst for the cyclopropanation of styrene with diazoacetates, affording ees of up to 98%. Conventionally, biometrics resources, such as face, gait silhouette, footprint, and pressure, have been utilized in gender recognition systems. However, the acquisition and processing time of these biometrics data makes the analysis difficult. This letter demonstrates for the first time how effective the footwear appearance is for gender recognition as a biometrics resource. A footwear database is also established with reprehensive shoes (footwears). Preliminary experimental results suggest that footwear appearance is a promising resource for gender recognition. Moreover, it also has the potential to be used jointly with other developed biometrics resources to boost performance.

A series Of pyrrolidine-triazole based dendritic catalysts have been synthesized and applied directly in the asymmetric Michael addition of ketones to nitroolefins without the use of an organic solvent. Good yields (up to 99%), and high diastereoselectivities (up to syn/anti = 45:1) and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee) have been obtained. Furthermore. the third generation catalyst can be reused at least five times without significant loss of catalytic activity. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chiral ligand 2-(2'-piperidinyl)pyridine 1 has been synthesized in good overall yield by sequential benzylation, hydrogenation and debenzylation of 2,2'-bipyridine. Its enantiomerically pure enantiomers have been obtained by resolution of 2-(1-benzyl-2-piperidinyl)pyridine 2 with D-tartaric acid (or L-tartaric acid) followed by debenzylation. The absolute configuration was determined by X-ray analysis of the (S)-2 D-tartrate. It was demonstrated that I can be used as an effective enantioselective catalyst in the addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes.

The asymmetric Michael addition of aldehydes to nitroolefins was investigated using L-prolinamide derivatives of 2-(2'-piperidinyl)pyridine as catalyst and a variety of phenols as co-catalyst. Extensive screening toward the effect of prolinamides, phenols, and solvents on this transformation revealed that a combination of (S)-2-(2'-piperidinyl)pyridine-derived trans-4-hydroxy-L-prolinamide 2c, (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthol, and dichloromethane was a promising system. This system was shown to be amenable to a rich variety of aldehydes and nitroolefins and afforded the nitroaldehyde products with excellent yield, enantiomeric excess (up to 99%) and diastereoselectivity ratio (up to 99/1), even in the case of 1 mol % catalyst loading and 1.5 equiv of aldehydes.

In this paper, the charge transfer across the micro-liquid/liquid interface supported at the orifice of a double-barrel micropipette, namely, a theta-pipette, is reported. Simple ion transfer(TMA(+)), facilitated ion transfer (potassium ion transfer facilitated by DB18C6), and electron transfer (ferrocene and ferri/ferrocyanide system) have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The experimental results show that a very thin aqueous film, linking both barrels filled with the aqueous solution and the organic solution respectively, can spontaneously be formed on the outer glass surface of such a double-barrel micropipette to construct a micro-liquid/liquid interface, which provides the asymmetry of diffusion field. Such device is demonstrated experimentally which can be employed as one of the simplest electrochemical cells to investigate the charge transfer across the liquid/liquid interface.
