This paper analyzes both theoretically and empirically the relationship between distance and frequency of scheduled transportation services. We study the interaction between a monopoly firm providing high-speed scheduled service and personal trans- portation (i.e., car). Most interestingly, the carrier chooses to increase frequency of service on longer routes when competing with personal transportation because provid- ing a higher frequency (at extra cost) it can also charge higher fares that can boost its profits. However, when driving is not a relevant option, frequency of service de- creases for longer flights consistently with prior studies. An empirical application of our analysis to the European airline industry con?rms the predictions of our theoretical model.

L’aplicatiu es desenvoluparà en entorn web i pretendrà aproximar-se al nivell de prestacions que una aplicació tradicional d'escriptori, gràcies a l'ús de tecnologies Web 2.0 com AJAX, però amb tot el valor afegit que implica una aplicació web.

Hub congestion is a major problem and a relevant policy issue because it causes delays and many organizational problems at airports that end up implying unpleasant consequences both for air travelers and airlines. In a competitive framework in which carriers choose aircraft size, this paper suggests that airlines schedule too many flights using overly small aircraft, which constitutes a major contributor to congestion. Two- part congestion tolls, accounting for the congestion imposed on other carriers and the congestion imposed on all passengers, are needed to recover e¢ ciency. Finally, we analyze the validity of the results by studying the effects of network size, airport capacity, competition in layover time, and the formation of airline alliances. We study the interaction between a monopoly firm providing a high-speed scheduled service and private transportation (i.e., car). Interestingly, the carrier chooses to increase the frequency of service on longer routes when competing with personal transportation because by providing higher frequency (at extra cost) it can also charge higher fares which can boost its profits. However, in line with the results of earlier studies, frequency decreases for longer flights when driving is not a viable option. An empirical application of our analysis to the European airline industry confirms the predictions of our theoretical model. A la jornada tècnica que es va celebrar a l’IRTA Mas Badia a La Tallada d’Empordà (Girona) el passat 27 d’agost, es va presentar una nova tècnica d’aclarida mecànica de pomes (fils de plàstic que giren i fan caure un determinat número de flors) que podria ser una alternativa a les actuals estratègies d’aclarida, com són l’aclarida amb fitoreguladors i l’aclarida manual. Pràcticament s’ha acabat la collita de les primeres pomes de l’any que corresponen a les varietats del grup Gala. La campanya d’enguany es caracteritza per unes altes temperatures, per una excessiva càrrega de fruits en els arbres i per una bona qualitat de sucres, però insuficient color dels fruits. En les altes temperatures poc es pot influir, però és possible intervenir en deixar el número adequat de fruits als arbres per tal que aquests tinguin el màxim de qualitat, calibre i color. En aquest sentit la primera presentació de la jornada va explicar les noves estratègies per facilitar l’aclarida de la poma. La poda anomenada centrifuga és una alternativa vàlida però no suficient, l’aclarida amb els fitoreguladors actuals té un efecte insuficient i les noves matèries actives assajades mostren uns resultats interessants. Finalment, l’aclarida mecànica permet una significativa innovació en aquesta fase de l’itinerari de la producció. Aquesta tècnica és una estratègia neta, efectiva i econòmicament molt més sostenible que les habituals aclarides manuals que es realitzen avui dia. A la jornada, també es va informar dels nous clons de Gala, la coloració dels quals és significativament més alta (33%) que algunes de les varietats que hi han plantades a la actualitat. També es van exposar i presentar les noves varietats més destacades de pera, préssec, nectarina i préssecs plans. En la jornada técnica celebrada en el IRTA Mas Badia en La Tallada de Empordà (Gerona) el pasado 27 de agosto, se presentó una nueva técnica de aclareo mecánico de manzanas (hilos de plástico que giran y hacen caer un determinado número de flores) que podría ser una alternativa a las actuales estrategias de aclareo, como son el aclareo con fitoreguladores y el aclareo manual. Prácticamente ha finalizado la cosecha de las primeras manzanas del año que corresponden a las variedades del grupo Gala. Este año la campaña se caracteriza por unas altas temperaturas, por una excesiva carga de frutos en los árboles y por una buena calidad de azúcares, pero insuficiente color de los frutos. En las altas temperaturas poco puede influirse, pero es posible intervenir en dejar el número adecuado de frutos en los árboles para que estos tengan el máximo de calidad, calibre y color. En este sentido la primera presentación de la jornada expuso las nuevas estrategias para facilitar el aclareo de la manzana. La poda llamada centrifuga es una alternativa válida pero no suficiente, el aclareo con los fitoreguladores actuales tiene un efecto insuficiente y las nuevas materias activas ensayadas muestran unos resultados interesantes. Finalmente, el aclareo mecánico permite una significativa innovación en esta fase del itinerario de la producción. Esta técnica es una estrategia limpia, efectiva y económicamente mucho más sostenible que las habituales técnicas de aclareo manuales que se realizan hoy en día. En la jornada, también se informó de los nuevos clones de Gala, la coloración de los cuales es significativamente más alta (33%) que algunas de las variedades que hay plantadas en la actualidad. También se expusieron y presentaron las nuevas variedades más destacadas de pera, melocotón, nectarina y melocotón planos.

Multiplier analysis based upon the information contained in Leontief's inverse is undoubtedly part of the core of the input-output methodology and numerous applications an extensions have been developed that exploit its informational content. Nonetheless there are some implicit theoretical assumptions whose implications have perhaps not been fully assessed. This is the case of the 'excess capacity' assumption. Because of this assumption resources are available as needed to adjust production to new equilibrium states. In real world applications, however, new resources are scarce and costly. Supply constraints kick in and hence resource allocation needs to take them into account to really assess the effect of government policies. Using a closed general equilibrium model that incorporates supply constraints, we perform some simple numerical exercises and proceed to derive a 'constrained' multiplier matrix that can be compared with the standard 'unrestricted' multiplier matrix. Results show that the effectiveness of expenditure policies hinges critically on whether or not supply constraints are considered.

A population of Biomphalaria occidentalis was found for the first time in the State of Minas Gerais. It was probavly introduced into the Várzea das Flores dam, in the municipality of Contagem, the area o0f study, during fish stocking in 1985. There is possibility of "competitive exclusion"between that species and B. glabrata, previously the only Biomphalaria found in the region. The present geographical distribution of B. occidentalis in Brazil is listed.

Nowadays, many of the health care systems are large and complex environments and quite dynamic, specifically Emergency Departments, EDs. It is opened and working 24 hours per day throughout the year with limited resources, whereas it is overcrowded. Thus, is mandatory to simulate EDs to improve qualitatively and quantitatively their performance. This improvement can be achieved modelling and simulating EDs using Agent-Based Model, ABM and optimising many different staff scenarios. This work optimises the staff configuration of an ED. In order to do optimisation, objective functions to minimise or maximise have to be set. One of those objective functions is to find the best or optimum staff configuration that minimise patient waiting time. The staff configuration comprises: doctors, triage nurses, and admissions, the amount and sort of them. Staff configuration is a combinatorial problem, that can take a lot of time to be solved. HPC is used to run the experiments, and encouraging results were obtained. However, even with the basic ED used in this work the search space is very large, thus, when the problem size increases, it is going to need more resources of processing in order to obtain results in an acceptable time.

Network airlines have been increasingly focusing their operations on hub airports through the exploitation of connecting traffic, allowing them to take advantage of economies of traffic density, which are unequivocal in the airline industry. Less attention has been devoted to airlines? decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines ?networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub.

From a total of 12,721 anophelines collected in a lowland area in Guaraí, Rio de Janeiro, from November 1991 to October 1992, 99.7% (12,688) were Anopheles aquasalis. This species occurred throughout the year, but in higher numbers from April to September, when rainfall was low or moderate. The proportion of parous females in June was significantly higher than the annual rate. An. aquasalis was weakly attracted by a light-trap, and no significant differences in abundance were detected between nights with and without moonlight.

The South America-Antarctica plate system shows many oceanic accretionary systems and subduction zones that initiated and then stopped. To better apprehend the evolution of the system, geodynamic reconstructions (global) have been created from Jurassic (165 Ma) to present, following the techniques used at the University of Lausanne. However, additional synthetic magnetic anomalies were used to refine the geodynamics between 33 Ma and present. The reconstructions show the break up of Gondwana with oceanisation between South America (SAM) and Antarctica (ANT), together with the break off of `Andean' geodynamical units (GDUs). We propose that oceanisation occurs also east and south of the Scotian GDUs. Andean GDUs collide with other GDUs crossing the Pacific. The west coast of SAM and ANT undergo a subsequent collision with all those GDUs between 103 Ma and 84 Ma, and the Antarctic Peninsula also collides with Tierra del Fuego. The SAM-ANT plate boundary experienced a series of extension and shortening with large strike-slip component, culminating with intra-oceanic subduction leading to the presence of the `V-' and anomalies in the Weddell Sea. From 84 Ma, a transpressive collision takes place in the Scotia region, with active margin to the east. As subduction propagates northwards into an old and dense oceanic crust, slab roll-back initiates, giving rise to the western Scotia Sea and the Powell Basin opening. The Drake Passage opens. As the Scotian GDUs migrate eastwards, there is enough space for them to spread and allow a north-south divergence with a spreading axis acting simultaneously with the western Scotia ridge. Discovery Bank stops the migration of South Orkney and `collides with' the SAM-ANT spreading axis, while the northern Scotian GDUs are blocked against the Falkland Plateau and the North-East Georgia Rise. The western and central Scotia and the Powell Basin spreading axes must cease, and the ridge jumps to create the South Sandwich Islands Sea. The Tierra del Fuego-Patagonia region has always experienced mid-oceanic ridge subduction since 84 Ma. En este proyecto se realiza el estudio de la organización de una empresa con el fin de encontrar los requerimientos de esta, posteriormente se realiza un estudio de tres sistemas ERP para acabar encontrando la solución que mejor se adapta a las necesidades de la empresa.
