The criteria for accepting or rejecting a technology extend beyond the intrinsic properties of the finished product such as physical performance. There are also extrinsic factors such as the history of the product and trust in the manufacturers and suppliers, as well as the perceptions and risk management strategies of various stakeholder groups. A methodology was trialled to take into account the extended supply chain of the product, while simultaneously engaging stakeholders to determine and to understand their perceptual frameworks. Three pine decking products manufactured using different amounts and types of chemical modification were compared using life cycle assessment and the comments of 114 respondents from six stakeholder groups in New Zealand. The results of the perceptual research include a quadrant diagram which allows a visual comparison of the responses of different stakeholders to actual or hypothetical products, aiding the identification of when and why certain technologies may be disqualified from acceptability or become the topic of public debate.

Explanations of chemical phenomena are nearly always focused at the sub-micro level, a level that cannot be observed, yet are normally provided with diagrams at the symbolic level. These diagrams represent the macro and sub-micro levels of matter. The connections between the macro level and the diagrams of the sub-micro level are not always apparent to students, indicating a need for chemical diagrams to be used carefully and explicitly. Having students draw and annotate chemical diagrams representing chemical phenomena at the sub-micro level can provide some insight into their understanding of chemistry at the macro level. Misinterpretation of diagrams can occur when the representations are not understood, when links are not made between the macro and sub-micro levels, or when the diagram is unfamiliar. Responding to these difficulties, strategies based on research and our experiences of teaching with diagrams are suggested for the choice and use of chemical diagrams depicting the sub-micro level in the teaching and learning of chemistry. These strategies provide opportunities for learners to construct acceptable personal mental models of the sub-micro level.

The influence of bands rich in phosphorus on the microstructure of hypereutectoid Wootz steel implement is described. Electron probe micro-analysis is combined with optical microscopy. Phosphorus-rich bands are seen to correspond to regions of internal cracking, carbon depletion, and enhanced frequency of spheroidized cementite in place of pearlite. A rationale for the findings is presented in terms of the influence of phosphorus on the Fe–C phase diagram and on the rate of the eutectoid reaction.

Chemical equations are representations that use symbols to summarise the net changes occurring in a reaction whereas depictions such as drawings of the submicroscopic level provide representations of the chemical transformations. While the ability to balance and interpret chemical equations is key to understanding many concepts in chemistry, many undergraduate chemistry students struggle to master these skills. The equations contain a great deal of implicit information and novices may not be able to make the connection between the equation and the actual chemical transformations that are occurring. This paper reports on a study which used submicroscopic diagrams to probe students' understanding of chemical equations. Assessment tasks required students to interpret diagrams, construct diagrams and to relate diagrams to symbolic representations. The analysis showed that some students have misconceptions about the molecular nature and chemical formulae and could not distinguish between coefficients and subscripts when representing chemical formulae. While students were generally able to balance a chemical equation presented as a set of diagrams, a significant number could not generate the balanced equation based on a diagram of the progress of a reaction, The study has demonstrated the use of student-generated diagrams to provide insight into students' understandings of chemical equations.

Overlapping network techniques to expand the single sequential finish-to-start relationship between preceding and succeeding activities in scheduling construction projects have been developed for decades. The hidden logic relationships between activities and two virtual activities, Start and Finish, however limit the applications of these techniques in practice as they may lead to incorrect time parameters of some activities. In this research, a novel approach has been developed to identify those concealed relationships in a structured procedure by a two-dimensional nested diagram. An empirical study was carried out to demonstrate the network modification approach.

High current-carrying capacity and rapid, liquidlike diffusion were achieved in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on the plastic-crystalline electrolyte succinonitrile and the I/I3 redox couple (see diagram). This could lead to the development of true solid-state DSSCs without conventional organic-liquid electrolytes, which can cause problems with long-term device stability.

The incorporation of dopant levels of lithium ions (0.5 to 9.3% by mole) in the N-methyl-N-ethylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (P12TFSA) plastic crystalline phase results in increases in the solid state ionic conductivity of more than 3 orders of magnitude at 298 K. Conductivities as high as 10−-4 S cm−1 at 323 K have been measured in these doped plastic crystal phases. These materials can therefore be classified as fast-ion conductors. Higher levels of Li only marginally increase the conductivity, up to around 33 mol%, followed by a slight decrease to 50 mol%. Thermal analysis behaviour has allowed the partial development of the binary phase diagram for the LiTFSA–P12TFSA system between 0–50 mol% LiTFSA, which suggests the presence of a solid solution single phase at concentrations less than 9.3 mol% LiTFSA. There is also strong evidence of eutectic behaviour in this system with a eutectic transition temperature around 308 K at 33 mol% LiTFSA. A model relating ionic conduction to phase behaviour in this system is presented. The increased conductivity upon doping has been associated with lithium ion motion via7Li solid state NMR linewidth measurements.

The author provides a diagram and table which reflect his conceptualisation of issues surrounding the definition of a doctorate. Two broad questions frame this characterisation: (i) what defines the doctorate? and (ii) where to now? In relation to the first question the author contends that the resources available to students, supervisors and institutions significantly influence what is regarded as a 'good' doctorate and the 'protection' of this standard. An overlapping set of issues is identified in response to the question 'where to now'? These are expressed as strategies in negotiating doctorate definitions and futures; some more reminiscent of times past and some cognisant of prevailing conditions, while others offer a qualitatively different strategy that explores (or generates) possibilities and opportunities within the parameters of the doctorate.

Results of crack growth observations on mica in water-containing environments are described. The study focuses on equilibrium crack states for reversed loading cycles, i.e., for initial propagation through virgin solid and subsequent retraction-repropagation through healed or misoriented-healed interfaces. Departures from these equilibrium states are manifest as steady-state forward or backward crack velocities at specific applied loads. The equilibria are thereby interpreted as quiescent, threshold configurations G = WE, with G the Griffith mechanical-energy-release rate and WE the Dupré work of adhesion, on crack velocity (v-G) diagrams. Generally, WE is found to decrease with concentration of water, in accordance with a Gibbs formalism. Hysteresis is observed in the forward-backward-forward crack propagation cycle, signifying a reduction in the adhesion energy on exposure of the open interface to environmental species prior to healing. This hysteresis is especially marked for those interfaces that are misoriented before healing, indicating that the structure of the underlying solid substrate as well as of the intervening fluid is an important consideration in the interface energetics. The equilibrium states for different environments can be represented on a simple energy-level diagram, as differences between thermodynamic end-point states: initial, closed-interface states refer to crystallographic bonding configurations ahead of the crack-tip adhesion zone; final, open interface states refer to configurations behind the crack-tip zone. The significance of this diagram in relation to the fundamental atomic structure of interfaces in fracture and other adhesion geometries, including implications concerning kinetics, is discussed.

Block copolymer systems with hydrogen bonding interactions have received relatively little attention. Recently, we have investigated the self-assembly and phase separation in such block copolymer systems with an attempt to elucidate the role of hydrogen bonding interactions both theoretically and experimentally [1-4]. In A-b-B/C diblock copolymer/homopolymer systems, the phase behavior was theoretically analyzed according to the random phase approximation and correlated with hydrogen bonding interactions in terms of the difference in inter-association constants (K). To examine how the hydrogen bonding determines the self-assembly and morphological transitions in these systems, we have introduced the K values as a new variable into the phase diagram which we established for the first time (Fig. 1). Multiple vesicular morphologies were formed in aqueous solution of A-b-B/A-b-C diblock copolymer complexes of PS-b-PAA and PS-b-PEO. Interconnected compound vesicles (ICCVs) were observed for the first time as a new morphology (Fig. 2), along with other aggregated nanostructures including vesicles, multilamellar vesicles, thick-walled vesicles and irregular aggregates. Complexation of two amphiphilic diblock copolymers provides a viable approach to vesicles in aqueous media.

Background : Low childhood physical activity levels are currently one of the most pressing public health concerns. Numerous school-based physical activity interventions have been conducted with varied success. Identifying effective child-based physical activity interventions are warranted. The purpose of this formative study was to elicit subjective views of children, their parents, and teachers about physical activity to inform the design of the CHANGE! (Children's Health, Activity, and Nutrition: Get Educated!) intervention programme.

Methods : Semi-structured mixed-gender interviews (group and individual) were conducted in 11 primary schools, stratified by socioeconomic status, with 60 children aged 9-10 years (24 boys, 36 girls), 33 parents (4 male, 29 female) and 10 teachers (4 male, 6 female). Questions for interviews were structured around the PRECEDE stage of the PRECEDE-PROCEDE model and addressed knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards physical activity, as well as views on barriers to participation. All data were transcribed verbatim. Pen profiles were constructed from the transcripts in a deductive manner using the Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model framework. The profiles represented analysis outcomes via a diagram of key emergent themes.

Results : Analyses revealed an understanding of the relationship between physical activity and health, although some children had limited understanding of what constitutes physical activity. Views elicited by children and parents were generally consistent. Fun, enjoyment and social support were important predictors of physical activity participation, though several barriers such as lack of parental support were identified across all group interviews. The perception of family invested time was positively linked to physical activity engagement.

Conclusions : Families have a powerful and important role in promoting health-enhancing behaviours. Involvement of parents and the whole family is a strategy that could be significant to increase children's physical activity levels. Addressing various perceived barriers to such behaviours therefore, remains imperative.

In this paper, we study the application of a scene structure visualizing technique called Double-Ring Take-Transition-Diagram (DR-TTD). This technique presents takes and their transitions during a film scene via nodes and edges of a 'graph' consisting of two rings as its backbone. We describe how certain filmic elements such as montage, centre/cutaway, dialogue, temporal flow, zone change, dramatic progression, shot association, scene introduction, scene resolution, master shot and editing orchestration can be identified from a scene through the signature arrangements of nodes and edges in the DR-TTD.

Lissitsky's spatial and architectural work anticipates the contemporary fascination with expanded fields of activity that have resulted in transdisciplinary approaches to research and the role of practice-led research. This paper will discuss Lissitzky's suprematist perspective in relation to contemporary practices - under the rubric of the "diagram" - that re-imagine and enact the relationship between the built surround and embodied cognition. Lissitzky's work will serve as the starting point for a discussion of contemporary practitioners and theorists working across philosophy, cognitive science and built environment in order to draw out, through the act of diagramming, life on new terms.
