We demonstrate tomographic imaging of the refractive index of turbid media using bifocal optical coherence refractometry (BOCR). The technique, which is a variant of optical coherence tomography, is based on the measurement of the optical pathlength difference between two foci simultaneously present in a medium of interest. We describe a new method to axially shift the bifocal optical pathlength that avoids the need to physically relocate the objective lens or the sample during an axial scan, and present an experimental realization based on an adaptive liquid-crystal lens. We present experimental results, including video clips, which demonstrate refractive index tomography of a range of turbid liquid phantoms, as well as of human skin in vivo.

Nurses globally are required and expected to report nursing errors. As is clearly demonstrated in the international literature, fulfilling this requirement is not, however, without risks. In this discussion paper, the notion of ‘nursing error’, the practical and moral importance of defining, distinguishing and disclosing nursing errors and how a distinct definition of ‘nursing error’ fits with the new ‘system approach’ to human-error management in health care are critiqued. Drawing on international literature and two key case exemplars from the USA and Australia, arguments are advanced to support the view that although it is ‘right’ for nurses to report nursing errors, it will be very difficult for them to do so unless a non-punitive approach to nursing-error management is adopted.

Recent experiments (Dittrich et al. (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. B 251, 195 (1993))) suggest that pigeon perception of wasp mimicry by hoverflies is similar to that of humans and of computer-based image matching. However, the relations are nonlinear and may explain why some species are abundant despite their being poor mimics to the human eye. We suggest that these discrepancies between pigeon and human categorization may lie in the differences between avian and primate colour vision. As pigeon categorization and computer image analysis were both assessed by using colour slides designed for human vision, they lacked the natural colour information available to wild birds, in particular that from ultraviolet (uv) wavelengths.

The approach taken here of reconstruction of the refractive index profile of planar waveguides involves solving a non-linear integral equation with Tikhonov regularization. Using global optimization with the new cutting angle and discrete gradient methods has yielded an acceptable reconstruction, even in the presence of significant noise in the data.

Aptamers are an interesting class of molecules that have potential in many facets of human health. They are characterized by high affinity and specificity to their targets, are small in size, have similar properties to antibodies, but are made synthetically. All of these properties, among others, give aptamers the potential to diagnose, image and treat like no other molecules. By combining the unique properties of aptamers with the ever expanding field of nanotechnology and all it has to offer, we are entering a very promising new area of targeted nanodelivery treatments. These treatments have found success in the complex disease processes of cancer, eye and inflammatory diseases.

In this article, we take up M‟s closing question from Play, arguing that it is the central phenomenological conundrum in much of Beckett‟s stage and screen work. The question we bring to Beckett‟s oeuvre is: what is the relationship between perception and presence, consciousness and corporeality? To answer „yes‟ to M‟s question – to be is as much as being seen – is to render the body not utterly useless, but periphery, or secondary, merely the flesh of perception. Beckett famously remarked that, in his increasing sense of minimalism, in his desire to „say the least necessary‟, his final work would be a blank piece of paper. In Beckett, does the body suffer the same fate as language?

The refractive indices of two nematogens, 4-methoxy-benzylidene-4 prime -n-butylaniline (MBBA) and 4-n-pentyl-4 prime -cyanobiphenyl (5CB), were measured throughout their nematic ranges at pressures up to 2 kbar and temperatures up to 70 degree C in the first substance and up to 5 kbar and 145 degree C in the second. Measurements were made at lambda equals 5,890 A, using a sensitive interference fringe technique. Results are presented in the form of functions n//e(P, T) for the extraordinary index and n//o (P, T) for the ordinary index, obtained by least squares fits to the experimental data.
