Purpose: To compare two fast threshold strategies of visual field assessment; SITA Fast (HSF) and Tendency Orientated Perimetry (TOP), in detecting visual field loss in patients with glaucoma. Methods: Seventy-six glaucoma, ocular hypertensive and normal patients had HSF and TOP performed in random order. Quantitative comparisons for the global visual field indices - mean deviation and defect (MD) for HSF and TOP, and pattern standard deviation (PSD) for HSF and loss variance (LV) for TOP - were made using correlation coefficients. Humphrey global parameters were converted to Octopus equivalents, and method comparison analysis was used to determine agreement between the two strategies. Test duration times were compared using t-test. Sensitivity and specificity for these two algorithms were determined according to predetermined criteria. Results: High correlation coefficient values were obtained for MD measurements between HSF and TOP (r=-0.89, P

A binding protein displaying broad-spectrum cross-reactivity within the sulfonamide group was used in conjunction with a sulfonamide specific sensor chip and a surface plasmon resonance biosensor to develop a rapid broad spectrum screening assay for sulfonamides in porcine muscle. Results for 40 samples were available in just over 5 h after the completion of a simple sample preparation protocol. Twenty sulfonamide compounds were detected. Acetylated metabolites were not recognised by the binding protein. Limit of detection (mean-three times standard deviation value when n = 20) was calculated to be 16.9 ng g(-1) in tissue samples. Intra-assay precision (n = 10) was calculated at 4.3 %CV for a sample spiked at 50 ng g(-1) with sulfamethazine, 3.6 %CV for a sample spiked at 100 ng g(-1) with sulfamethazine, 7.2 %CV for a sample spiked at 50 ng g(-1) with sulfadiazine and 3.1 %CV for a sample spiked at 100 ng g-1 with sulfadiazine. Inter-assay precision (n = 3) was calculated at 9.7 %CV for a sample spiked at 50 ng g-1 with sulfamethazine, 3.8 %CV for a sample spiked at 100 ng g(-1) with sulfamethazine, 3.5 %CV for a sample spiked at 50 ng g(-1) with sulfadiazine and 2.8 %CV for a sample spiked at 100 ng g(-1) with sulfadiazine. We consider blocks of quantum spins in a chain at thermal equilibrium, focusing on their properties from a thermodynamical perspective. In a classical system the temperature behaves as an intensive magnitude, above a certain block size, regardless of the actual value of the temperature itself. However, a deviation from this behavior is expected in quantum systems. In particular, we see that under some conditions the description of the blocks as thermal states with the same global temperature as the whole chain fails. We analyze this issue by employing the quantum fidelity as a figure of merit, singling out in detail the departure from the classical behavior. As it may be expected, we see that quantum features are more prominent at low temperatures and are affected by the presence of zero-temperature quantum phase transitions. Interestingly, we show that the blocks can be considered indeed as thermal states with a high fidelity, provided an effective local temperature is properly identified. Such a result may originate from typical properties of reduced subsystems of energy-constrained Hilbert spaces. Finally, the relation between local and global temperatures is analyzed as a function of the size of the blocks and the system parameters.

Objective Increased advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and their soluble receptors (sRAGE) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia (PE). However, this association has not been elucidated in pregnancies complicated by diabetes. We aimed to investigate the serum levels of these factors in pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a condition associated with a four-fold increase in PE. Design Prospective study in women with T1DM at 12.2 ± 1.9, 21.6 ± 1.5 and 31.5 ± 1.7 weeks of gestation [mean ± standard deviation (SD); no overlap] before PE onset. Setting Antenatal clinics. Population Pregnant women with T1DM (n = 118; 26 developed PE) and healthy nondiabetic pregnant controls (n = 21). Methods Maternal serum levels of sRAGE (total circulating pool), N -(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), hydroimidazolone (methylglyoxal-modified proteins) and total AGEs were measured by immunoassays. Main outcome measures Serum sRAGE and AGEs in pregnant women with T1DM who subsequently developed PE (DM PE+) versus those who remained normotensive (DM PE-). Results In DM PE+ versus DM PE-, sRAGE was significantly lower in the first and second trimesters, prior to the clinical manifestation of PE (P <0.05). Further, reflecting the net sRAGE scavenger capacity, sRAGE:hydroimidazolone was significantly lower in the second trimester (P <0.05) and sRAGE:AGE and sRAGE:CML tended to be lower in the first trimester (P <0.1) in women with T1DM who subsequently developed PE versus those who did not. These conclusions persisted after adjusting for prandial status, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), duration of diabetes, parity and mean arterial pressure as covariates. Conclusions In the early stages of pregnancy, lower circulating sRAGE levels, and the ratio of sRAGE to AGEs, may be associated with the subsequent development of PE in women with T1DM. © 2012 The Authors BJOG An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology © 2012 RCOG.

Densities, rho, of aqueous solutions of the room temperature protic ionic liquid (PIL), pyrrolidinium nitrate are determined at the atmospheric pressure over the temperature range from (283.15 to 323.15) K and within the whole composition range. The molar isobaric heat capacities, C(p), and refractive index, n(D), of {PIL + water} binary system are measured at 298.15 K. The excess molar volumes V(E), excess molar isobaric heat capacities C(p)(E), and deviation from ideality of refractive index Delta(phi)n, of pyrrolidinium nitrate aqueous solutions were deduced from the experimental results as well as apparent molar volumes V(phi), partial molar volumes (V) over bar (m,i), and thermal expansion coefficients alpha(p). The V(E) values were found to be positive over the entire composition range at all temperatures studied therein, whereas deviations from ideality were negative for refractive index Delta(phi)n. The volumetric properties of binary mixtures containing water and four other protic ionic liquids, such as pyrrolidinium hydrogen sulfate, pyrrolidinium formiate, collidinium formate, and diisopropyl-ethylammonium formate were also determined at 298.15 K. Results have been then discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

NiTi alloys have been widely used in the applications for micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS), which often involve some precise and complex motion control. However, when using the NiTi alloys in MEMS application, the main problem to be considered is the degradation of functional property during cycling loading. This also stresses the importance of accurate prediction of the functional behavior of NiTi alloys. In the last two decades, a large number of constitutive models have been proposed to achieve the task. A portion of them focused on the deformation behavior of NiTi alloys under cyclic loading, which is a practical and non-negligible situation. Despite of the scale of modeling studies of the field in NiTi alloys, two experimental observations under uniaxial tension loading have not received proper attentions. First, a deviation from linearity well before the stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) has not been modeled. Recent experiments confirmed that it is caused by the formation of stress-induced R phase. Second, the influence of the well-known localized Lüders-like SIMT on the macroscopic behavior of NiTi alloys, in particular the residual strain during cyclic loading, has not been addressed. In response, we develop a 1-D phenomenological constitutive model for NiTi alloys with two novel features: the formation of stress-induced R phase and the explicit modeling of the localized Lüders-like SIMT. The derived constitutive relations are simple and at the same time sufficient to describe the behavior of NiTi alloys. The accumulation of residual strain caused by R phase under different loading schemes is accurately described by the proposed model. Also, the residual strain caused by irreversible SIMT at different maximum loading strain under cyclic tension loading in individual samples can be explained by and fitted into a single equation in the proposed model. These results show that the proposed model successfully captures the behavior of R phase and the essence of localized SIMT.

Peak altitudes, hypsometry, geology, and former equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) are analyzed across the Sredinny Mountains (Kamchatka). Overall, evidence is found to suggest that the glacial buzzsaw has operated to shape the topography of this mountain range, but the strength of this signature is not spatially uniform. In the southern sector of the mountains, we see evidence that an efficient glacial buzzsaw has acted to impose constraints upon topography, limiting peak altitudes, and concentrating land-surface area (hypsometric maxima) close to palaeo-ELAs. By contrast, in the northern sector of the mountains, a number of peaks rise high above the surrounding topography, and land-surface area is concentrated well below palaeo-ELAs. This deviation from a classic ‘buzzsaw signature’, in the northern sector of the mountains, is considered to reflect volcanic construction during the Quaternary, resulting in a series of high altitude peaks, combined with the action of dynamic glaciers, acting to skew basin topography toward low altitudes, well below palaeo-ELAs. These glaciers are considered to have been particularly dynamic because of their off-shore termination, their proximity to moisture-bearing air masses from the North Pacific, and because accumulation was supplemented by snow and ice avalanching from local high altitude peaks. Overall, the data suggest that the buzzsaw remains a valid mechanism to generally explain landscape evolution in mountain regions, but its signature is significantly weakened in mountain basins that experience both volcanic construction and climatic conditions favouring dynamic glaciation.

Electrostatic solitary waves in plasmas are the focus of many current studies of localized electrostatic disturbances in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Motivated by recent experimental observations, in which electrostatic solitary structures were detected in laser-plasma experiments, we have undertaken an investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of plasma evolving in two dimensions, in the presence of excess superthermal background electrons. We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on weakly nonlinear ion-acoustic waves. Deviation from the Maxwellian distribution is effectively modelled by the kappa model. A linear dispersion relation is derived, and a decrease in frequency and phase speed in both parallel and perpendicular modes can be seen, which is due to excess superthermal electrons, and which is stronger in the upper mode, and hardly noticeable in the lower (acoustic) mode. We show that ion-acoustic solitary waves can be generated during the nonlinear evolution of a plasma fluid, and their nonlinear propagation is governed by a Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) type equation. A multiple scales perturbation technique is used to derive the ZK equation. Shock excitations can be produced if we allow for dissipation in the model, resulting in a Zakharov-Kuznetsov Burgers type equation. Different types of shock solutions and solitary waves are obtained, depending on the relation between the system parameters, and the effect of these on electrostatic shock structures is investigated numerically. A parametric investigation is conducted into the role of plasma nonthermality and magnetic field strength. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Background: Barrett's oesophagus (BO) is a well recognized precursor of the majority of cases of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC). Endoscopic surveillance of BO patients is frequently undertaken in an attempt to detect early OAC, high grade dysplasia (HGD) or low grade dysplasia (LGD). However histological interpretation and grading of dysplasia is subjective and poorly reproducible. The alternative flow cytometry and cytology-preparation image cytometry techniques require large amounts of tissue and specialist expertise which are not widely available for frontline health care.
Methods: This study has combined whole slide imaging with DNA image cytometry, to provide a novel method for the detection and quantification of abnormal DNA contents. 20 cases were evaluated, including 8 Barrett's specialised intestinal metaplasia (SIM), 6 LGD and 6 HGD. Feulgen stained oesophageal sections (1µm thickness) were digitally scanned in their entirety and evaluated to select regions of interests and abnormalities. Barrett’s mucosa was then interactively chosen for automatic nuclei segmentation where irrelevant cell types are ignored. The combined DNA content histogram for all selected image regions was then obtained. In addition, histogram measurements, including 5c exceeding ratio (xER-5C), 2c deviation index (2cDI) and DNA grade of malignancy (DNA-MG), were computed.
Results: The histogram measurements, xER-5C, 2cDI and DNA-MG, were shown to be effective in differentiating SIM from HGD, SIM from LGD, and LGD from HGD. All three measurements discriminated SIM from HGD cases successfully with statistical significance (pxER-5C=0.0041, p2cDI=0.0151 and pDNA-MG=0.0057). Statistical significance is also achieved differentiating SIM from LGD samples with pxER-5C=0.0019, p2cDI=0.0023 and pDNA-MG=0.0030. Furthermore the differences between LGD and HGD cases are statistical significant (pxER-5C=0.0289, p2cDI=0.0486 and pDNA-MG=0.0384).
Conclusion: Whole slide image cytometry is a novel and effective method for the detection and quantification of abnormal DNA content in BO. Compared to manual histological review, this proposed method is more objective and reproducible. Compared to flow cytometry and cytology-preparation image cytometry, the current method is low cost, simple to use and only requires a single 1µm tissue section. Whole slide image cytometry could assist the routine clinical diagnosis of dysplasia in BO, which is relevant for future progression risk to OAC.

Stable networks of order r where r is a natural number refer to those networks that are immune to coalitional deviation of size r or less. In this paper, we introduce stability of a finite order and examine its relation with efficient networks under anonymous and component additive value functions and the component-wise egalitarian allocation rule. In particular, we examine shapes of networks or network architectures that would resolve the conflict between stability and efficiency in the sense that if stable networks assume those shapes they would be efficient and if efficient networks assume those shapes, they would be stable with minimal further restrictions on value functions.

A hierarchical nanoparticle strategy to simultaneously gain super Raman signal amplification, high uniformity, and reproducibility is presented. Using hollow Au-Ag alloy nanourchins, an ultrahigh sensitivity, e.g., down to 1 fM concentrations for DEHP molecule is obtained. A small standard deviation of <10% is achieved by simply dropping and evaporating sub-100 nm nanourchins onto a substrate.

Electrostatic solitary waves in plasmas are the focus of many current studies of localized electrostatic disturbances in both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Here, an investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of plasma evolving in two dimensions, in the presence of excess superthermal background electrons and positrons, is undertaken. We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on weakly nonlinear ion acoustic waves. Deviation from the Maxwellian distribution is effectively modelled by the kappa model. A linear dispersion relation is derived, and a decrease in frequency and phase speed in both parallel and perpendicular modes can be seen, when the proportion of positrons to electrons increases. We show that ion acoustic solitary waves can be generated during the nonlinear evolution of a plasma fluid, and their nonlinear propagation is governed by a Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) type equation. A multiple scales perturbation technique is used to derive the ZK equation. The solitary wave structures are dependent on the relation between the system parameters, specifically the superthermality of the system, the proportion of positron content, magnetic field strength, and the difference between electron and positron temperature. The parametric effect of these on electrostatic shock structures is investigated. In particular, we find that stronger superthermality leads to narrower excitations with smaller potential amplitudes. Increased positron concentration also suppresses both the amplitude and the width of solitary wave structures. However, the structures are only weakly affected by temperature differentials between electrons and positrons in our model. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The tendon of flexor pollicis longus angulates at the trapezio-metacarpal joint level. The degree of angulation varies with extent of radial/ulnar deviation (Rack and Ross [1984] J. Physiol. 351:99–110). We report a fibrous pulley at this level that helps stabilize the tendon and facilitates its action. The morphology of the pulley is described. We believe that it has an important role to play in the unique function of the tendon facilitating the movement of the thumb perpendicular to the plane of the thumbnail. Clin. Deficits in sensitivity to visual stimuli of low spatial frequency and high temporal frequency (so-called frequency-doubled gratings) have been demonstrated both in schizophrenia and in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Such basic perceptual functions are ideal candidates for molecular genetic study, because the underlying neural mechanisms are well characterized; but they have sometimes been overlooked in favor of cognitive and neurophysiological endophenotypes, for which neural substrates are often unknown. Here, we report a genome-wide association study of a basic visual endophenotype associated with psychological disorder. Sensitivity to frequency-doubled gratings was measured in 1060 healthy young adults, and analyzed for association with genotype using linear regression at 642758 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. A significant association (P=7.9×10) was found with the SNP marker rs1797052, situated in the 5′-untranslated region of PDZK1; each additional copy of the minor allele was associated with an increase in sensitivity equivalent to more than half a standard deviation. A permutation procedure, which accounts for multiple testing, showed that the association was significant at the α=0.005 level. The region on chromosome 1q21.1 surrounding PDZK1 is an established susceptibility locus both for schizophrenia and for ASD, mirroring the common association of the visual endophenotype with the two disorders. PDZK1 interacts with N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors and neuroligins, which have been implicated in the etiologies of schizophrenia and ASD. These findings suggest that perceptual abnormalities observed in two different disorders may be linked by common genetic elements. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd and International Behavioural and Neural Genetics Society.

Objective: The aim of this research is to use finite element analysis (FEA) to quantify the effect of the sample shape and the imperfections induced during the manufacturing process of samples on the bond strength and modes of failure of dental adhesive systems through microtensile test. Using the FEA prediction for individual parameters effect, estimation of expected variation and spread of the microtensile bond strength results for different sample geometries is made. Methods: The estimated stress distributions for three different sample shapes, hourglass, stick and dumbbell predicted by FEA are used to predict the strength for different fracture modes. Parameters such as the adhesive thickness, uneven interface of the adhesive and composite and dentin, misalignment of axis of loading, the existence of flaws such as induced cracks during shaping the samples or bubbles created during application of the adhesive are considered. Microtensile experiments are performed simultaneously to measure bond strength and modes of failure. These are compared with the FEA results. Results: The relative bonding strength and its standard deviation for the specimens with different geometries measured through the microtensile tests confirm the findings of the FEA. The hourglass shape samples show lower tensile bond strength and standard deviation compared to the stick and dumbbell shape samples. ANOVA analysis confirms no significant difference between dumbbell and stick geometry results, and major differences of these two geometries compared to hourglass shape measured values. Induced flaws in the adhesive and misalignment of the angle of application of load have significant effect on the microtensile bond strength. Using adhesive with higher modulus the differences between the bond strength of the three sample geometries increase. Significance: The result of the research clarifies the importance of the sample geometry chosen in measuring the bond strength. It quantifies the effect of the imperfections on the bond strength for each of the sample geometries through a systematic and all embracing study. The results explain the reasons of the large spread of the microtensile test results reported by various researchers working in different labs and the need for standardization of the test method and sample shape used in evaluation of the dentin-adhesive bonding system. © 2007 Academy of Dental Materials.
