To address growing concern over the effects of fisheries non-target catch on elasmobranchs worldwide, the accurate reporting of elasmobranch catch is essential. This requires data on a combination of measures, including reported landings, retained and discarded non-target catch, and post-discard survival. Identification of the factors influencing discard vs. retention is needed to improve catch estimates and to determine wasteful fishing practices. To do this we compared retention rates of elasmobranch non-target catch in a broad subset of fisheries throughout the world by taxon, fishing country, and gear. A regression tree and random forest analysis indicated that taxon was the most important determinant of retention in this dataset, but all three factors together explained 59% of the variance. Estimates of total elasmobranch removals were calculated by dividing the FAO global elasmobranch landings by average retention rates and suggest that total elasmobranch removals may exceed FAO reported landings by as much as 400%. This analysis is the first effort to directly characterize global drivers of discards for elasmobranch non-target catch. Our results highlight the importance of accurate quantification of retention and discard rates to improve assessments of the potential impacts of fisheries on these species.

We report down-core sedimentary Nd isotope (epsilon Nd) records from two South Atlantic sediment cores, MD02-2594 and GeoB3603-2, located on the western South African continental margin. The core sites are positioned downstream of the present-day flow path of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and close to the Southern Ocean, which makes them suitable for reconstructing past variability in NADW circulation over the last glacial cycle. The Fe-Mn leachates epsilon Nd records show a coherent decreasing trend from glacial radiogenic values towards less radiogenic values during the Holocene. This trend is confirmed by epsilon Nd in fish debris and mixed planktonic foraminifera, albeit with an offset during the Holocene to lower values relative to the leachates, matching the present-day composition of NADW in the Cape Basin. We interpret the epsilon Nd changes as reflecting the glacial shoaling of Southern Ocean waters to shallower depths combined with the admixing of southward flowing Northern Component Water (NCW). A compilation of Atlantic epsilon Nd records reveals increasing radiogenic isotope signatures towards the south and with increasing depth. This signal is most prominent during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and of similar amplitude across the Atlantic basin, suggesting continuous deep water production in the North Atlantic and export to the South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean. The amplitude of the epsilon Nd change from the LGM to Holocene is largest in the southernmost cores, implying a greater sensitivity to the deglacial strengthening of NADW at these sites. This signal impacted most prominently the South Atlantic deep and bottom water layers that were particularly deprived of NCW during the LGM. The epsilon Nd variations correlate with changes in 231Pa/230Th ratios and benthic d13C across the deglacial transition. Together with the contrasting 231Pa/230Th: epsilon Nd pattern of the North and South Atlantic, this indicates a progressive reorganization of the AMOC to full strength during the Holocene.

Long term global archives of high-moderate spatial resolution, multi-spectral satellite imagery are now readily accessible, but are not being fully utilised by management agencies due to the lack of appropriate methods to consistently produce accurate and timely management ready information. This work developed an object-based remote sensing approach to map land cover and seagrass distribution in an Australian coastal environment for a 38 year Landsat image time-series archive (1972-2010). Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS), Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) imagery were used without in situ field data input (but still using field knowledge) to produce land and seagrass cover maps every year data were available, resulting in over 60 map products over the 38 year archive. Land cover was mapped annually using vegetation, bare ground, urban and agricultural classes. Seagrass distribution was also mapped annually, and in some years monthly, via horizontal projected foliage cover classes, sand and deep water. Land cover products were validated using aerial photography and seagrass maps were validated with field survey data, producing several measures of accuracy. An average overall accuracy of 65% and 80% was reported for seagrass and land cover products respectively, which is consistent with other studies in the area. This study is the first to show moderate spatial resolution, long term annual changes in land cover and seagrass in an Australian environment, created without the use of in situ data; and only one of a few similar studies globally. The land cover products identify several long term trends; such as significant increases in South East Queensland's urban density and extent, vegetation clearing in rural and rural-residential areas, and inter-annual variation in dry vegetation types in western South East Queensland. The seagrass cover products show that there has been a minimal overall change in seagrass extent, but that seagrass cover level distribution is extremely dynamic; evidenced by large scale migrations of higher seagrass cover levels and several sudden and significant changes in cover level. These mapping products will allow management agencies to build a baseline assessment of their resources, understand past changes and help inform implementation and planning of management policy to address potential future changes.

During Leg 41 Neogene sediments were recovered from five sites off northwest Africa. On the Sierra Leone Rise (Site 366), Neogene sediments consist of nanno oozes, nanno chalk, and calcareous clays 230 meters thick, resting conformably on the late Oligocene sediments. The common succession of zones occurs with two hiatuses. The lower gap corresponds to an interval around the lower/middle Miocene boundary (the Praeorbulina glomerosa and Orbulina suturalis-Globorotalia peri-pheroronda zones are absent) and the upper gap coincides with an interval around the middle/upper Miocene boundary (the Sphaeroidinellopsis sub-dehiscens-GIobigerina druryi, Globigerina nepenthes-Globorotalia siakensis and Globorotalia conlinuosa zones are missing). In the Cape Verde Basin (Site 367) deep-water Neogene turbidites (about 200-250 m thick) contain poor fauna of redeposited and sorted Cretaceous, Eocene, Oligocene, and Neogene species. On the Cape Verde Rise (Site 368) the Neogene section starts with slightly calcareous and non-calcareous clays with poor planktonic foraminifers of the lower Miocene. Later on this area was uplifted and clayey sediments have been replaced upsection in order by more shallow-water clayey nanno and nanno-foraminifer oozes and marls and pure calcareous oozes. In the middle Miocene, planktonic foraminifers are still not diverse, but since the level of the Globigerina nepenthes-Globorotalia siakensis Zone, almost all Neogene zones have been traced. The minimum thickness of the Neogene sediments is about 230 meters. On the continental slope off Spanish Sahara (Site 369) monotonous calcareous pelagic sediments of Neogene age (164 m thick) overlie the late Oligocene comformably, or with a small time gap. A set of zones beginning from the Globigerinoides primordis-Globorotaiia kugleri Zone up to the Globorotalia fohsi fohsi Zone has been revealed with a gap corresponding to the Globigerinita stainforthi and the Globigerinatella insueta-Globigerinoides irilobus zones. Above that follow sediments with heterogeneous microfauna which result from redeposition or mixing of sediments during drilling. The section ends with sediments of the late Miocene and lower Pliocene with abundant planktonic foraminifers. The latter are unconformably overlain by the Quaternary ooze. In the Morocco basin (Site 370) deep-water marls and calcareous clays of the lower Miocene contain poor assemblages of planktonic foraminifers. The middle and upper Miocene are represented by turbidites (alternation of nanno oozes, clays, siltstones, and sands) with heterogeneous microfauna. Total thickness of Neogene is up to 200 meters. In general the Neogene foraminifer microfauna of the area studied includes the majority of species which developed within the tropical-subtropical belt. The entire succession of the Miocene and Pliocene foraminifer zones occurs. The only exclusion is the Sphaeroidinellopsis subdehiscens-Globigerina druryi Zone of the middle Miocene. The distribution of species is shown on three tables. Comments are given for 47 species and subspecies of foraminifers (stratigraphic ranges, peculiarities of morphology, and ultrastructure of the shell wall).

Sediments recovered from a drift deposit located on the Pacific side of the Antarctic Peninsula (ODP Leg 178, Site 1101) give a physical record of a bottom current, sourced from the Weddell Sea Deep Water, for the past 3 Ma. Sediment grain size and magnetic fabric analyses indicate a contourite depositional environment and little change in the average intensity of this current. Terrigenous fluxes decreased around the time of the onset of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation, which we interpret as a freezing of the base of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Cap. Terrigenous fluxes have increased since 1.7 Ma implying a possible return of the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Cap to a more wet-based ice sheet.

The POSEIDON cruise POS298/2 was carried out by the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Hamburg. Members of the University of Venice and the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale, Trieste were participating in the cruise. The project was aimed at gaining a deeper knowledge on the water mass transformations occurring in the southern Adriatic and western Ionian Sea. To obtain this result CTD profiles, lADCP profiles and water samples for oxygen and salinity were taken and analysed. The cruise had several objectives: 1. Identifying the routes and characteristics of the fraction of deep water in the Ionian Sea which was generated in the Adriatic Sea. 2. Quantifying the mixing of the deep water generated in the Adriatic Sea with the ambient water masses on its way southward. 3. Estimating the importance of the deep water generated in the Adriatic Sea for the ventilation of the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

From a 10.7 m long gravity core from the Sierra Leone Rise (5°39.5' N, 19°51' W) a detailed oxygen and carbon isotope record of both planktonic and benthonic foraminifera species was obtained extending from the Recent to Jaramillo event. The analysis yielded six major results. 1. Benthos oxygen isotopes varied by 1.8-2.2 per mil from interglacial to glacial times and may indicate a synglacial cooling of North Atlantic Deep Water at 2800 m depth by 1-3°C. 2. Variable anomalies between the benthos and plankton d18O record indicate a cooling of sea-surface temperatures (SST) by up to 6 °C during some glacial stages. 3. Southerly trade winds and equatorial upwelling may excert the primary control off SST variations, in particular of extremee values of cold and warm stages and of the abrupt character of climate transitions and their leads and lags, and finally, of variable sedimentation rates. 4. The benthos d13C record correlates well with the flux and preservation of organic matter. 5. A new time scale, CARPOR, was established from the assumption that terrigenous sediment supply was ± constant bit CaCO3 varied considerably. When applied to the d18O record, three major and numerous short-term variations of sedimentation rates (0.8 to 4.0 cm/kyr) can be distinguished. 6. The climatic record was modified by bioturbation much more strongly during cold than during warm stages.

Controls of sediment dynamics at the Galician continental slope (NW Iberia) during the past 30 ka were reconstructed from three new gravity cores (GeoB11035-1, 130206-1, 13071-1) based on sedimentological (e.g. sortable silt, IRD), micropalaeontological (e.g. coccoliths), geochemical (AMS 14C, XRF) and geophysical (e.g. magnetic susceptibility) diagnostics. The data are consistent with existing regional knowledge that, during marine isotope stages 3-1, variations in detrital input, marine productivity and sea level were the essential drivers of sediment availability on the slope, whereas deep-water current velocities controlled sediment deposition: (1) the period prior to 30 cal ka BP is characterized by minor but systematic variations in various proxies which can be associated with D-O cycles; (2) between 30 and 18 cal ka BP, high detrital input and steady slope-parallel currents led to constant sedimentation; (3) from the LGM until 10 cal ka BP, the shelf-transgressive sea-level rise increased the detrital particle flux; sedimentation was influenced by significantly enhanced deep-water circulation during the Bølling/Allerød, and subsequent slowing during the Younger Dryas; (4) an abrupt and lasting change to hemipelagic sedimentation at ca. 10 cal ka BP was probably due to Holocene warming and decelerated transgression; (5) after 5 cal ka BP, additional input of detrital material to the slope is plausibly linked to the evolution of fine-grained depocentres on the Galician shelf, this being the first report of this close shelf-slope sedimentary linkage off NW Iberia. Furthermore, there is novel evidence of the nowadays strong outer shelf Iberian Poleward Current becoming established at about 15.5 cal ka BP. The data also demonstrate that small-scale morphologic features and local pathways of sediment export from the neighbouring shelf play an important role for sediment distribution on the NW Iberian slope, including a hitherto unknown sediment conduit off the Ría de Arousa. By implication, the impact of local morphology on along- and down-slope sediment dynamics is more complex than commonly considered, and deserves future attention.

Two sites in the Labrador Sea and one site in Baffin Bay were drilled during Leg 105. Radiolarians were recovered at all three sites, although at Site 645 (Baffin Bay), radiolarians were present in useful numbers only in the mudline sample. Radiolarians of late Neogene age were recovered at Site 646 south of Greenland, while early Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians were recovered from the Labrador Sea at Site 647. In Site 646, radiolarian and other coarse-fraction abundances vary dramatically from sample to sample and may reflect deep-water depositional processes as well as changes in surface-water conditions. Site 647 siliceous microfossils reach their peak abundance and preservation in Core 105-647A-25R and decline gradually upward into the lower Miocene (Cores 105-647A-13R and -14R). Siliceous microfossil abundances in counts of the > 38-µm Carbonate-free coarse fraction from the siliceous interval are correlated to each other, but not to the abundance of nonbiogenic coarse-fraction components. Radiolarian abundances in specimens per gram (but not diatom abundances) are correlated to bulk opal concentration and to the organic carbon content of the sediment. The abundance of radiolarians and other siliceous microfossils within the lower Oligocene to lower Miocene is interpreted as reflecting changes in surface-water productivity. With only a few exceptions, no stratigraphic indicator species were seen in samples from either Site 646 or Site 647. The absence of both tropical/subtropical and Norwegian-Greenland Sea stratigraphic forms is due to the dominance of subarctic North Atlantic taxa in Leg 105 assemblages. The early Oligocene and early Miocene assemblages recovered at Site 647 are of particular interest, as very little material of these ages has previously been recovered from the subarctic North Atlantic region, and virtually no descriptive work has been conducted on the more endemic components of the radiolarian assemblages from these time intervals. Thus, this report concentrates on providing, at least in part, the first comprehensive documentation of early Oligocene and early Miocene radiolarians from the subarctic North Atlantic, with emphasis on basic descriptions, measurements, and photographic documentation. However, synonymic work and formal designation of new species names has been deferred until additional material from other regions can be examined. The sole exception is the emendation of Theocalyptra tetracantha Bjorklund and Kellogg 1972 to Cycladophora tetracantha n. comb.

Organic-carbon-rich 'black shales' and adjacent organic-carbon-poor rocks from three different Cretaceous settings encountered during ODP Leg 103 have been studied by organic geochemical methods. Rock-Eval analysis, carbon isotope data, and lipid biomarkers show organic matter to contain varying proportions of marine and continental materials. In Hauterivian-Barremian organic-carbon-rich marlstone turbidites, large amounts of land-derived organic matter are found. Aptian-Albian black-colored shales are interspersed within green claystones, from which they differ by containing more marine organic matter. An abbreviated layer of black shale from the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary is dominated by well-preserved marine organic matter. Downslope transport and rapid reburial within a predominantly oxygenated deep-water setting created most of these examples of black shales, except for the Cenomanian-Turonian deposits in which deep-water anoxia may have been involved.

Over most of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean a hiatus is present between the lower upper Maastrichtian and lowermost Tertiary deposits; sedimentation resumed ~200 ka (upper zone Pla) after the K-T boundary. Current-bedded volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks at Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Sites 536 and 540, which were previously interpreted as impact-generated megawave deposits of K-T boundary age, are biostratigraphically of pre-K-T boundary age and probably represent turbidite or gravity-How deposits. The top 10 to 20 cm of this deposit at Site 536 contains very rare Micula prinsii, the uppermost Maastrichtian index taxon, as well as low values of Ir (0.6 pbb) and rare Ni-rich spinels. These indicate possible reworking of sediments of K-T boundary age at the hiatus. Absence of continuous sediment accumulation across the K-T boundary in the 16 Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sections examined prevents their providing evidence of impact-generated megawave deposits in this region. Our study indicates that the most complete trans-K-T stratigraphic records may be found in onshore marine sections of Mexico, Cuba, and Haiti. The stratigraphic records of these areas should be investigated further for evidence of impact deposits.

Stable isotopic measurements of G. sacculifer and C. wuellerstorfi in a core from the western equatorial Atlantic imply that there are parallel, suborbital oscillations in surface water hydrography and deep water circulation occurring during oxygen isotope stages 2 and 3. Low values of G. sacculifer delta18O accompany high values of C. wuellerstorfi delta13C, linking warmer sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the tropics with increased production of lower North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). The amplitude of the delta18O oscillations is 0.6 per mil (or 2°-3°C), which is superimposed on a glacial/interglacial amplitude of about 2.1per mil. Using the G. sacculifer delta18O data, we calculate that surface waters were colder during stage 2 than calculated by CLIMAP [1976, 1981]. The longer-period (>2 kyr) oscillations in air temperature recorded in the Greenland and Antarctic ice cores appear to correlate with oscillations in sea surface temperature in the equatorial Atlantic. The magnitude of these oscillations in tropical SST is too large to have resulted from changes in meridional heat transport caused by the global conveyor alone. The apparent synchroneity of equatorial SST and polar air temperature changes, as well as the amplitude of the SST changes at the equator, are consistent with the climate effects expected from changes in the atmosphere's greenhouse gas content (H2Ovapor, CO2, and CH4).

A new benthic foraminiferal Ba/Ca and Cd/Ca data set from core RC13-229 in the deep Cape Basin indicates only small variations in bottom water nutrient concentrations in Circumpolar Deep Water (CPDW) over the last 450 kyr. Variability in the Ba record is characterized by somewhat higher values during glacial periods, consistent with a reduction in the flux of Ba-depleted North Atlantic Deep Water to the Southern Ocean during glacial periods. The small changes in the Ba and Cd records contrast with the large and systematic increase in CPDW nutrients during glacial periods implied by the benthic delta13C record. This discrepancy, essentially an extension of the well-known Southern Ocean Cd-delta13C conflict, is evaluated by transforming RC13-229 paleochemical data into carbonate parameters using the modern oceanic relationships between delta13C, Cd, and SumCO2 and between Ba and alkalinity. Calculations using Cd/Ca to estimate past variations in CPDW SumCO2 and Ba/Ca to estimate past variations in CPDW alkalinity yield carbonate ion concentrations that exceed calcite saturation throughout the record length, with generally higher carbonate ion values associated with glacial intervals (opposite in sense to the RC13-229 %CaCO3 record). Substituting delta13C to estimate SumCO2 leads to extreme calcite undersaturation at this site during glacial periods, clearly inconsistent with the preservation of calcite throughout the length of RC13-229. Accepting the carbon isotope record as a direct measure of past variations in CPDW SumCO2 concentrations requires that both the Cd and Ba evidence for limited nutrient and alkalinity changes be disregarded.

Based upon high-resolution thermal-infrared Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery in combination with ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalysis data, we derived long-term polynya parameters such as polynya area, thin-ice thickness distribution and ice-production rates from daily cloud-cover corrected thin-ice thickness composites. Our study is based on a thirteen year investigation period (2002-2014) for the austral winter (1 April to 30 September) in the Antarctic Southern Weddell Sea. The focus lies on coastal polynyas which are important hot spots for new-ice formation, bottom-water formation and heat/moisture release into the atmosphere. MODIS has the capability to resolve even very narrow coastal polynyas. Its major disadvantage is the sensor limitation due to cloud cover. We make use of a newly developed and adapted spatial feature reconstruction scheme to account for cloud-covered areas. We find the sea-ice areas in front of Ronne and Brunt Ice Shelf to be the most active with an annual average polynya area of 3018 ± 1298 and 3516 ± 1420 km2 as well as an accumulated volume ice production of 31 ± 13 and 31 ± 12 km**3, respectively. For the remaining four regions, estimates amount to 421 ± 294 km**2 and 4 ± 3 km**3 (Antarctic Peninsula), 1148 ± 432 km**2 and 12 ± 5 km**3 (Iceberg A23A), 901 ± 703 km**2 and 10 ± 8 km**3 (Filchner Ice Shelf) as well as 499 ± 277 km**2 and 5 ± 2 km**3 (Coats Land). Our findings are discussed in comparison to recent studies based on coupled sea-ice/ocean models and passive-microwave satellite imagery, each investigating different parts of the Southern Weddell Sea.
