A laser beam automatic alignment system is applied in a multipass amplifier of the SG-III prototype laser. Considering the requirements of the SG-III prototype facility, by combining the general techniques of the laser beam automatic alignment system, according to the image relayed of the pinholes in the spatial filter, and utilizing the optical position and the spatial distribution of the four pinholes of the main spatial filter in the multipass amplifier of the SG-III prototype, a reasonable and optimized scheme for automatic aligning multipass beam paths is presented. It is demonstrated on the multipass amplifier experimental system. (C) 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

By means of the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the field representation of a laser beam modulated by a hard-edged aperture is derived. The near-field and far-field transverse intensity distributions of the beams with different bandwidths are analyzed by using the representation. The numerical calculation results indicate that the amplitudes and numbers of the intensity spikes decrease with increasing bandwidth, and beam smoothing is achieved when the bandwidth takes a certain value in the near field. In the far field, the radius of the transverse intensity distribution decreases as the bandwidth increases, and the physical explanation of this fact is also given. Porous SiO2 antireflective (AR) coatings are prepared from the colloidal silica solution modified with methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) based on the sol-gel route. The viscosity of modified silica suspensions changes but their stability keeps when MTES is introduced. The refractive indices of modified coatings vary little after bake treatment from 100 to 150 Celsius. The modified silica coatings on Ti:sapphire crystal, owning good homogeneity, display prominent antireflective effect within the laser output waveband (750-850 nm) of Ti:sapphire lasers, with average transmission above 98.6%, and own laser induced damage thresholds (LIDTs) of more than 2.2 J/cm2 at 800 nm with the pulse duration of 300 ps.

The propagation expression of a broadband laser passing through a dispersive wedge is derived on the basis of the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, Smoothing effects caused by the phase perturbation of the dispersive wedge on the intensity profiles are investigated in detail. The phase perturbation of the dispersive wedge induces a relative transverse position shift between the diffraction patterns of different frequency components. The relative transverse position shift is of great benefit to the fill of the intensity peaks of some patterns in the valleys of others when these patterns are overlapped and thus the smoothing effect is achieved. A closed-form propagation equation of Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams passing through an unapertured thin lens is derived. Focal shifts are analyzed by means of two different methods according to the facts that the axial intensity of some focused Hermite-cosh-Gaussian beams are null and that of some others are not null but the principal maximum intensity may be located on the axis or off the axis. Optimal focusing for the beams is studied, and the condition of optimal focusing ensuring the smallest beam width is also given. (c) 2005 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A novel method incorporating the shielded method and the post-processing method has been proposed to fabricate the pi-phase-shilted fibre grating. Then an Er-doped pi-phase-shifted distributed feedback fibre grating laser has been fabricated using the grating. The laser threshold is 20 mW. When pumped with 90 mW light at 980 nm, the laser gives an output of 1.1 mW. Its signal-to-noise ratio is better than 60 dB. It is demonstrated that the laser is single mode operation by means of a Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer.

Starting from the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the field expressions of apertured polychromatic laser beams with Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian transverse modes are derived. Influence of the bandwidth on the intensity distributions of the laser beams is analyzed. It is found that when the bandwidth increases, the amplitudes and numbers of the intensity spikes decrease and beam uniformity is improved in the near field and the width of transverse intensity distribution of the apertured beams decreases in the far field. Thus, the smoothing and narrowing effects can be achieved by increasing the bandwidth. Also, these effects are found in the laser beams with Hermite-Gaussian transverse modes as the bandwidth increases.(c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Starting from the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral, the propagation equations of a broadband laser passing through a dispersive lens and a dispersive wedge are derived. Smoothing effect on the side lobes of the focused pattern is achieved as the broadband laser passes through the lens because of the spectral dispersion of the lens. By inserting a dispersive wedge behind the lens, better smoothing effect is realized because a relative position shift between focused patterns of different frequency components is generated due to the spectral dispersion of the wedge. Smoothing effect on the side lobe is obtained even with small bandwidth of the broadband laser as the wedge is used. (c) 2006 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
