Lanthanide(III) complexes of p-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(p-NBSA)(3), m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(m-NBSA)(3), and 2,4-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(2,4-NBSA)(3), were prepared, characterized and examined as catalyst for the nitration of benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, bromobenzene and chlorobenzene. The initial screening of the catalysts showed that lanthanum(III) complexes were more effective than the corresponding ytterbium(III) complexes, and that catalysts containing the bulky 2,4-NBSA ligand were less effective than the catalyst containing p-NBSA (nosylate) or m-NBSA ligands. Examination of a series of Ln(p-NBSA)(3) and Ln(m-NBSA)(3) catalysts revealed that there is a clear correlation between the ionic radii of the lanthanide(III) ions and the yields of nitration, with the lighter lanthanides being more effective. The X-ray single crystal structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3).6H(2)O shows that two m-NBSA ligands are directly bound to the metal centre while the third ligand is not located in the first coordination sphere, but it is hydrogen bonded to one of the water molecules which is coordinated to ytterbium(III). NMR studies suggest that this structure is preserved under the conditions used in the nitration reaction. The structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3) is markedly different from the structure of the well-known ytterbium(III) triflate catalyst. The coordination of the nitrobenzenesulfonate counterion to the lanthanide(III) ion suggests that steric effects might play an important role in determining the efficiency of these novel nitration catalysts. Silver colloids prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution with sodium citrate were embedded in alumina following two different preparation procedures resulting in samples containing 3 and 5 wt.% silver. Characterization of these materials using TEM. XPS, XAES, CP/MAS NMR, XRD, and adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen showed that embedding the pre-prepared silver colloids into the alumina via the sol-gel procedure preserved the particle size of silver. However, as XAES demonstrates, the catalysts prepared in a sol-gel with a lower amount of water led to embedded colloids with a higher population of Ag+ species. The catalytic behaviors of the resultant catalysts were well correlated with the concentration of these species. Thus, the active silver species of the catalysts containing more Ag+ species selectively converts NO to N-2. However, subsequent thermal aging leads to an enhancement of the conversion of NO parallel to slight alteration of the selectivity with the appearance of low amounts of N2O despite an increase of Ag+ species. Accordingly, an optimal surface Ag-0/Ag+ ratio is probably needed, independently of the size of silver particles. It was found that this optimal ratio strongly depends on the operating conditions during the synthesis route. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Monolithic catalysts are widely used as structured catalysts, especially in the abatement of pollutants. Probing what happens inside these monoliths during operation is, therefore, vital for modelling and prediction of the catalyst behavior. SpaciMS is a spatially resolved capillary-inlet mass spectroscopy system allowing for the generation of spatially resolved maps of the reactions within monoliths. In this study SpaciMS results combined with 3D CFD modelling demonstrate that SpaciMS is a highly sensitive and minimally invasive technique that can provide reaction maps as well as catalytic temporal behavior. Herein we illustrate this by examining kinetic oscillations during a CO oxidation reaction over a Pt/Rh on alumina catalyst supported on a cordierite monolith. These oscillations were only observed within the monolith by SpaciMS between 30 and 90% CO conversion. Equivalent experiments performed in a plug-flow reactor using this catalyst in a crushed form over a similar range of reaction conditions did not display any oscillations demonstrating the importance of intra monolith analysis. This work demonstrates that the SpaciMS offers an accurate and comprehensive picture of structured catalysts under operation.

The activity and nature (i e heterogeneous and/or homogeneous) of catalysts based on CsF supported on alpha-Al2O3 were investigated for the transesterification of vegetable oil with methanol. The effect of the activation temperature, CsF loading and the reusability in a recirculating reactor were first studied CsF/alpha-Al2O3 exhibited the highest activity for a CsF loading of 0 6 mmol/g and when activated at 120 degrees C An important aspect of this study is the effect of CsF leaching into the reaction mixture, which is attributed to the high solubility of CsF in methanol, leading to a complete loss of activity after one run It was Identified that the activity of the catalyst resulted from a synergy between alumina and dissolved CsF, the presence of both compounds being absolutely necessary to observe any conversion The use of an alumina with a higher surface area resulted in a far greater reaction rate, showing that the concentration of surface site on the oxide (probably surface hydroxyl) was rate-limiting in the case of the experiments using the low surface area alpha-Al2O3 This work emphasizes that combined homogeneous-heterogeneous catalytic systems made from the blending of the respective catalysts can be used to obtain high conversion of vegetable oil to biodiesel. Despite the homogeneous/heterogeneous dual character, such a catalytic system may prove valuable in developing a simple and cost-effective continuous catalytic process for biodiesel production (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

A new method of sol-gel polymer template synthesis of mesoporous catalytic thin films has been proposed which allows controlling the chemical nature of the film, the porosity, thickness and loading with an active species. The mesoporous films with a long-order structure can be obtained in a narrow range of surfactant-to-metal precursor molar ratios from 0.006 to 0.009. The catalytic film thickness was varied from 300 to 1000 nm while providing a uniform catalyst distribution with a desired catalyst loading (1 wt. % Au nanoparticles) throughout the film. The films were characterized by TEM, SEM, ethanol adsorption and contact angle measurements. The calcination of the as-synthesized films at 573 K reduced Ti4+ sites to Ti3+. A 300 nm thick Au-containing film showed an initial TOF of 1.4 s(-1) and a selectivity towards unsaturated alcohols as high as 90% in the hydrogenation of citral. Thicker films demonstrated a high selectivity towards the saturated aldehyde (above 55%) and a lower intrinsic catalytic activity (initial TOF of 0.7-0.9 s(-1)) in the absence of internal diffusion limitations.

Functionalization of alkanes is much sought after for the production of fine and bulk chemicals. In particular, the oxidative activation of alkanes and their conversion to ethene and propene has been studied extensively, owing to the use of these alkenes in polymerization reactions. The greater reactivity of the products in comparison with the reactants has proven a major issue in this reaction as this can result in overoxidation, producing CO and CO2 and, therefore, reducing the alkene yield. Herein, the first application of supported gold catalysts for the direct activation of C2+ aliphatic alkanes with oxygen to form alkenes is demonstrated. This catalyst is particularly notable as it is highly active, selective to propene and ethene, and stable on stream over a 48 h period. Maintaining cationic gold is thought to be critical for the stability and this catalyst design provides the possibility of applying gold-based catalysts over a much wider temperature range than has been reported.

Hydrogenation of tertiary amides, in particular, N-methylpyrrolidin-2-one, can be efficiently facilitated by a TiO(2)-supported bimetallic Pt/Re catalyst at low temperatures and pressures. Characterisation of the catalysts and kinetic tests have shown that the close interaction between the Re and Pt is crucial to the high activity observed. DFT calculations were used to examine a range of metal combinations and show that the role of the uncoordinated Re is to activate the C=O and that of the Pt is as a hydrogenation catalyst, removing intermediates from the catalyst surface. The rate enhancement observed on the TiO(2) support is thought to be due to the presence of oxygen vacancies allowing adsorption and weakening of the C=O bond. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. The problem of differentiating between active and spectator species that have similar infrared spectra has been addressed by developing short time-on-stream in situ spectroscopic transient isotope experimental techniques (STOS-SSITKA). The techniques have been used to investigate the reaction mechanism for the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by hydrocarbons under lean-burn (excess oxygen) conditions on a silver catalyst. Although a nitrate-type species tracks the formation of isotopically labeled dinitrogen, the results show that this is misleading because a nitrate-type species has the same response to an isotopic switch even under conditions where no dinitrogen is produced. In the case of cyanide and isocyanate species, the results show that it is possible to differentiate between slowly reacting spectator isocyanate species, probably adsorbed on the oxide support, and reactive isocyanate species, possibly on or close to the active silver phase. The reactive isocyanate species responds to an isotope switch at a rate that matches that of the rate of formation of the main product, dinitrogen. It is concluded that these reactive isocyanates could potentially be involved in the reduction of NOx whereas there is no evidence to support the involvement of nitrate-type species that are observable by infrared spectroscopy.

A mechanistic study of the H-2-assisted Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of NOx with octane as reductant over a Ag/Al2O3 catalyst was carried out using a modified DRIFTS cell coupled to a mass spectrometer Using fast transient cycling switching of H-2 with a time resolution of a few seconds It was possible to differentiate potential reaction intermediates from other moieties that are clearly spectator species Using such a periodic operation mode effects were uncovered that are normally hidden in conventional transient studies which typically consist of a single transient In experiments based on a single transient addition of H-2 to or removal of H-2 from the SCR feed it was found that the changes in the concentrations of gaseous species (products and reactants) were not matched by changes at comparable timescales of the concentration of surface species observed by IR This observation indicates that the majority of sur face species observed by DRIFTS under steady-state reaction conditions are spectators In contrast under fast cycling experimental conditions It was found that a surface isocyanate species had a temporal response that matched that of N-15(2) This suggests that some of the isocyanate species observed by infrared spectroscopy could be important intermediates in the hydrogen-assisted SCR reaction although it is emphasised that this may be dependent on the way in which the infrared spectra are obtained It is concluded that the use of fast transient cycling switching techniques may provide useful mechanistic information under certain circumstances.

The use of new technologies based on microstructured reactors in industrial processes, including the obtainment of hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic oxidation of ammonia, the utilization of rocket fuels, fine organic synthesis, polymerization, and phase transfer catalysis, were considered. The transition to microtechnologies considerably increases the performance of the process; at the same time, the product yield increases as compared with periodically operating reactors, which allows for a reduction of costs at the separation stage of the reaction mixture and the extraction of the reaction products.

Dealuminated beta zeolites exchanged with Pd and Fe were prepared to investigate the influence of iron and dealumination on the activity and selectivity of Pd/BEA zeolite for toluene total oxidation. The specific areas determined by BET method and EPR studies allowed to know that the palladium would be more easily agglomerated on the BEA than on the DBEA. Moreover, a quantification of the palladium saturation on the BEA zeolite was deduced by EPR. Effects of dynamic and static oxidation and weak and strong reduction treatments were studied by EPR. Several isolated and interacted Pd+ species and hole centers were detected. The Pd was much reduced after the catalytic test in dealuminated and Fe doped samples. This result could be directly correlated to the catalytic deactivation. The deactivation could be also explain by the type of coke deposed on the catalyst and by the hydroscopic behavior of the samples. Addition of Fe or dealumination could prevent the deactivation and then lead to better catalysts for VOCs oxidation.
