Fuel cells powered directly with ethanol (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell-DEFC) are very attractive for the possibility of using a renewable fuel in the generation of clean energy. However, it is still necessary to deepen the understanding of catalytic processes and their dependence on the catalytic properties. This work proposes to study the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in an alkaline medium of Pd nanoparticles supported in carbon oxide hybrids using various transition metal oxides (MoO3, TiO2, WO3 and ZrO2). The materials prepared were characterized by techniques such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) to verify the structure, the distribution of particles in the supports and the presence of Pd on particles oxide. Experiments of X-rays absorption spectroscopy were carried out using soft X-rays (SXS) to evaluate the changes in the electronic properties of the Pd particles caused by interactions with different oxides. Measurements of cyclic voltammetry and potential sweeps of adsorbed CO oxidation allowed evaluating general aspects of the catalysts' electrochemical behavior and determining the electrochemically active area thereof. The catalytic performances of ethanol oxidation in alkaline medium were evaluated by electrochemical techniques (potential scan and chronoamperometry), and showed an improvement in activity with the addition of oxides in material containing only carbon, which was most pronounced for the catalyst containing TiO2. This improvement was predominantly associated with the electronic effects caused by the interaction of Pd on the support, causing a vacancy in the 4d band of Pd which, in turn, produces variations in adsorption energies of the species...

In this work the influence of variations in the borohydrate reduction method on the properties of PtRu/C electrocatalysts was investigated. The electrocatalysts were prepared using 1:1 ; 2:1; 5:1; 50:1 and 250:1 molar ratios of NaBH4 to metals. The reduction was also performed by dripping or by fast addition of the solution. The results showed that PtRu nanoparticles obtained by fast addition had the smallest crystallite sizes. It was also noted that the catalytic activity increased as the borohydrate:metal molar ratio increased. The PtRu/C electrocatalyst (50:1) obtained by fast addition presented the best catalytic activity for ethanol electro-oxidation.

A 20% Pt3Sn/C catalyst was prepared by reduction with formic acid and used in a direct ethanol fuel cell at low temperatures. The electro-catalytic activity of this bimetallic catalyst was compared to that of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. The PtSn catalyst showed better results in the investigated temperature range (30 degrees-70 degrees C). Generally, Sn promotes ethanol oxidation by adsorption of OH species at considerably lower potentials compared to Pt, allowing the occurrence of a bifunctional mechanism. The bimetallic catalyst was physico-chemically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The presence of SnO2 in the bulk and surface of the catalyst was observed. It appears that SnO2 can enhance the ethanol electro-oxidation activity at low potentials due to the supply of oxygen-containing species for the oxidative removal of CO and CH3CO species adsorbed on adjacent Pt active sites.

This work describes the covalent immobilization of an ironporphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin iron(III) chloride (FeTFPP), onto maghemite/silica magnetic nanospheres covered with aminofunctionalized silica. The resulting material (gamma-Fe2O3/SiO2-NHFeP) was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of this magnetic ironporphyrin was investigated in the oxidation of hydrocarbons (styrene, (Z)-cyclooctene and R-(+)-limonene) and an herbicide (simazine) by hydrogen peroxide or 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. Hydrocarbon and simazine oxidation reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. This catalytic system proved to be efficient and selective for hydrocarbon oxidation, leading to high product yields from styrene (89%), cyclooctene (71%) and R-(+) -limonene (86%). Simazine oxidation was attained with 100% selectivity for a dechlorinated product (OEAT), while several oxidation products were obtained for the same catalyst in homogeneous media. The catalyst can be easily recovered through application of an external magnetic field and washed after reaction. Catalyst reuse experiments for R-(+)-limonene oxidation have shown that the catalytic activity is kept at 90% after 10 consecutive reactions.

The structure of gold-platinum nanoparticles is heavily debated as theoretical calculations predict core-shell particles, whereas x-ray diffraction experiments frequently detect randomly mixed alloys. By calculating the structure of gold-platinum nanoparticles with diameters of up to approximate to 3.5 nm and simulating their x-ray diffraction patterns, we show that these seemingly opposing findings need not be in contradiction: Shells of gold are hardly visible in usual x-ray scattering, and the interpretation of Vegard's law is ambiguous on the nanoscale. One of the key objectives in fuel cell technology is to reduce Pt loading by the improvement of its catalytic activity towards alcohol oxidation. Here, a sol-gel based method was used to prepare ternary and quaternary carbon supported nanoparticles by combining Pt-Ru with Mo, Ta, Pb, Rh or Ir, which were used as electro-catalysts for the methanol and ethanol oxidation reactions in acid medium. Structural characterization performed by XRD measurements revealed that crystalline structures with crystallites ranging from 2.8 to 4.1 nm in size and with different alloy degrees were produced. Tantalum and lead deposited as a heterogeneous mixture of oxides with different valences resulting in materials with complex structures. The catalysts activities were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and by Tafel plots and the results showed that the activity towards methanol oxidation was highly dependent of the alloy degree, while for ethanol the presence of a metal capable to promote the break of C-C bond, such as Rh, was necessary for a good performance. Additionally, the catalysts containing of TaOx or PbOx resulted in the best materials due to different effects: the hi-functional mechanism promoted by TaOx and a better dispersion of the catalysts constituents promoted by PbOx. Cellulase, an enzymatic complex that synergically promotes the degradation of cellulose to glucose and cellobiose, free or adsorbed onto Si/SiO(2) wafers at 60 degrees C has been employed as catalyst in the hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel), microcrystalline cellulose pre-treated with hot phosphoric acid (CP), cotton cellulose (CC) and eucalyptus cellulose (EC). The physical characteristics such as index of crystallinity (I(C)), degree of polymerization (DP) and water sorption values were determined for all samples. The largest conversion rates of cellulose into the above-mentioned products using free cellulase were observed for samples with the largest water sorption values; conversion rates showed no correlation with either IC or DP of the biopolymer. Cellulose with large water sorption value possesses large pore volumes, hence higher accessibility. The catalytic efficiency of immobilized cellulase could not be correlated with the physical characteristics of cellulose samples. The hydrolysis rates of the same cellulose samples with immobilized cellulase were lower than those by the free enzyme, due to the diffusion barrier (biopolymer chains approaching to the immobilized enzyme) and less effective contact between the enzyme active site and its substrate. Immobilized cellulase, unlike its free counterpart, can be recycled at least six times without loss of catalytic activity, leading to higher overall cellulose conversion. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. This work aimed to develop plurimetallic electrocatalysts composed of Pt, Ru, Ni, and Sn supported on C by decomposition of polymeric precursors (DPP), at a constant metal: carbon ratio of 40:60 wt.%, for application in direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). The obtained nanoparticles were physico-chemically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). XRD results revealed a face-centered cubic crystalline Pt with evidence that Ni, Ru, and Sn atoms were incorporated into the Pt structure. Electrochemical characterization of the nanoparticles was accomplished by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) in slightly acidic medium (0.05 mol L-1 H2SO4), in the absence and presence of ethanol. Addition of Sn to PtRuNi/C catalysts significantly shifted the ethanol and CO onset potentials toward lower values, thus increasing the catalytic activity, especially for the quaternary composition Pt64Sn15Ru13Ni8/C. Electrolysis of ethanol solutions at 0.4 V vs. RHE allowed determination of acetaldehyde and acetic acid as the main reaction products. The presence of Ru in alloys promoted formation of acetic acid as the main product of ethanol oxidation. The Pt64Sn15Ru13Ni8/C catalyst displayed the best performance for DEFC.

Since electrode electroactivity and stability depend directly on the nature, morphology, and structure of the material, we have investigated how modifications to the Pechini method during the synthesis of Pt-RuOx/C electrocatalysts affected catalyst activity. The structure and stability of the resulting materials were investigated after their submission to a large number of potential scans and to constant potential for a prolonged time period in sulfuric acid 0.5 mol L-1 and methanol 0.1 mol L-1 solution. DMFC tests were accomplished using membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) prepared by hot-pressing a pretreated Nafion 117 membrane together with the prepared Pt-RuOx anodes and a Pt cathode (from E-TEK), in order to compare the catalytic activity of the materials prepared by different methods. The stability studies demonstrated that the catalyst whose resin/carbon support mixture was agitated in a balls mill before undergoing heat-treatment was more stable than the other prepared catalysts. The catalysts synthesized with the single resin consisting of Pt and Ru and subjected to ultrasound before heat-treatment furnished the highest power density in the single fuel cell. The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was evaluated using a polycrystalline Au substrate modified with two different amounts of Pt using the galvanic exchange methodology. FTIR results suggest that Pt deposits have a greater ability to break the C-C bond present in the ethanol molecule. However, under potentiostatic conditions both modified Au surfaces undergo faster deactivation in comparison with polycrystalline platinum as indicated by the chronoamperometric results. XPS results indicate the presence of two phases depending on the Pt content. These are: (i) Pt-Au alloy and (ii) segregated Pt. The structural and electronic properties of these phases were related to the differences observed in the catalytic activity.

Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are attractive energy generators for powering portable electronic devices, mainly due to their high energy density and number of electrons per borohydride ion. However, the lack of a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the borohydride oxidation reaction limits the performance of these devices. The most commonly studied electrocatalysts for this reaction are composed of gold and platinum. Nevertheless, for these metals, the borohydride electrooxidation reaction mechanism (BOR) is not completely understood, and the total oxidation reaction, involving eight electrons per BH4- species, competes with parallel reactions, with a lower number of exchanged electrons and/or with heterogeneous chemical hydrolysis. Considering the above-mentioned issues, this work presents recent advances in the knowledge of the BOR pathways on polycrystalline (bulk) Au and Pt electrocatalysts. It presents the studies of the BOR reaction on Au and Pt electrodes using in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FUR), and on-line Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The spectroscopic and spectrometric data provided physical evidence of intermediate species and the formation of H-2 in the course of the BOR as a function of the electrode potential. These results enabled to advance in the knowledge about the BOR pathways on Au and Pt electrocatalysts. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work describes the study of the ethanol oxidation reaction of a Pt/C Etek electrocatalyst that was supported on different substrates, such as gold, glassy carbon and carbon cloth treated with PTFE. In the ethanol oxidation reaction, the activity varies with the substrate, as well as the pathways for ethanol oxidation, as studied by an ATR-FTIR in situ setup using the carbon cloth as the electrocatalyst support. The electrocatalyst Pt/C supported on gold starts acetaldehyde production from ethanol oxidation at an onset potential of 0.1 V less than that observed for the same process on Teflon-treated carbon cloth. The Pt/C supported on the carbon cloth starts its CO2 production for the same oxidation process at 0.2 V less than on the Pt/C supported on gold substrate. The differences in catalytic activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction depend not only on the electrocatalyst but also on various electrode factors, such as the substrate, the roughness of the electrode and the charge transfer resistance.
