The study analyses atmospheric feedback to the occurrence of upwelling along the Polish Baltic coast. Upwelling events were identified on the basis of daily mean sea surface temperature (SST) maps from the period 1982–2010 derived from the NOAA OI SST V2 High Resolution Dataset. Synoptic conditions favourable to the occurrence of upwelling were determined on the basis of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. On average, there are approximately 23 days with upwelling each year along the Polish Baltic coast, which account for approximately 13%

We study the motion of electrons in a single miniband of a semiconductor superlattice driven by THz electric field polarized along the growth direction. We work in the semiclassical balance-equation model, including different elastic and inelastic scattering rates, and incorporating the self-consistent electric field generated by electron motion. We explore regions of complex dynamics, which can include chaotic behaviour and symmetry-breaking. We estimate the magnitudes of dc current and dc voltage that spontaneously appear in regions of broken-symmetry for parameters characteristic of modern semiconductor superlattices. This work complements PRL 80(1998)2669 [ cond-mat/9709026 ].

This study contexualises the relationship between the armed forces and the civil authority in Ireland using and revising the theoretical framework advanced by Huntington. It tracks the evolution of the idea of a representive body for soldiers in the late 1980s, to the setting up of statutory associations under the Defence Amendment Act 1990. The study considers Irish soldiers political agitation and their use of peaceful democratic activities to achieve their aims. It highlights the fundamental policy arguments that were made against the idea of representation for the army and positions those arguments in the study of civil-military relations. Utilising unique access to secret Department of Defence files, it reveals in-depth ideological arguments advanced by the military authories in Ireland against independent representation. This thesis provides an academic study of the establishment of PDFORRA. It answers key questions regarding the change in the position of Irish government who were categorically opposed to the idea of representation in the army. It illustrates the involvement of other agencies such as the European Organisation of Military Associations (Euromil) reveals reciprocal support by the Irish associations to other emerging groups in Spain. Accessing as yet unpublished Department of Defence files, study analyses tension between the military authorities and the government. It highlights for the first time the role of enlisted personnel in the shaping of new state structures and successfully dismmisses Huntingtons theoretical contention that enlisted personnel are of no consequence in the study of civil-military relations. It fills a gap in our understanding, identified by Finer, as to how politicisation of soldiers takes place. This thesis brings a new dimension to the discipline of civil-military relations and creates new knowledge that will enhance our understanding of an area not covered previously.

Glycolysis, glutaminolysis, the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation are the main metabolic pathways. Exposing cells to key metabolic substrates (glucose, glutamine and pyruvate); investigation of the contribution of substrates in stress conditions such as uncoupling and hypoxia was conducted. Glycolysis, O2 consumption, O2 and ATP levels and hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) signalling in PC12 cells were investigated. Upon uncoupling with FCCP mitochondria were depolarised similarly in all cases, but a strong increase in respiration was only seen in the cells fed on glutamine with either glucose or pyruvate. Inhibition of glutaminolysis reversed the glutamine dependant effect. Differential regulation of the respiratory response to FCCP by metabolic environment suggests mitochondrial uncoupling has a potential for substrate-specific inhibition of cell function. At reduced O2 availability (4 % and 0 % O2), cell bioenergetics and local oxygenation varied depending on the substrate composition. Results indicate that both supply and utilisation of key metabolic substrates can affect the pattern of HIF-1/2α accumulation by differentially regulating iO2¬, ATP levels and Akt/Erk/AMPK pathways. Inhibition of key metabolic pathways can modulate HIF regulatory pathways, metabolic responses and survival of cancer cells in hypoxia. Hypoxia leads to transcriptional activation, by HIF, of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) kinase which phosphorylates and inhibits PDH, a mitochondrial enzyme that converts pyruvate into acetyl-CoA. The levels of PDH (total and phosphorylated), PDH kinase and HIF-1α were analysed in HCT116 and HCT116 SCO2-/- (deficient in complex IV of the respiratory chain) grown under 20.9 % and 3 % O2. Data indicate that regulation of PDH can occur in a manner independent of the HIF-1/PDH kinase 1 axis, mitochondrial respiration and the demand for acetyl-CoA. Collectively these results can be applied to many diseases; reduced nutrient supply and O2 during ischemia/stroke, hypoglycaemia in diabetes mellitus and cancer associated changes in uncoupling protein expression levels.

Spatially periodic vegetation patterns are well known in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. Mathematical models have been developed that attribute this phenomenon to a symmetry-breaking instability. Such models are based on the interplay between competitive and facilitative influences that the vegetation exerts on its own dynamics when it is constrained by arid conditions, but evidence for these predictions is still lacking. Moreover, not all models can account for the development of regularly spaced spots of bare ground in the absence of a soil prepattern. We applied Fourier analysis to high-resolution, remotely sensed data taken at either end of a 40-year interval in southern Niger. Statistical comparisons based on this textural characterization gave us broad-scale evidence that the decrease in rainfall over recent decades in the sub-Saharan Sahel has been accompanied by a detectable shift from homogeneous vegetation cover to spotted patterns marked by a spatial frequency of about 20 cycles km-1. Wood cutting and grazing by domestic animals have led to a much more marked transition in unprotected areas than in a protected reserve. Field measurements demonstrated that the dominant spatial frequency was endogenous rather than reflecting the spatial variation of any pre-existing heterogeneity in soil properties. All these results support the use of models that can account for periodic vegetation patterns without invoking substrate heterogeneity or anisotropy, and provide new elements for further developments, refinements and tests. This study underlines the potential of studying vegetation pattern properties for monitoring climatic and human impacts on the extensive fragile areas bordering hot deserts. Explicit consideration of vegetation self-patterning may also improve our understanding of vegetation and climate interactions in arid areas. © 2006 The Authors.

In spectra of jet-cooled C2H2 recorded with an FTIR spectrometer, the ν5, ν4 + ν5, ν3 and ν2 + ν4 + ν5 bands all exhibit an intensity distribution corresponding to ∼6 K for rotation, with no evidence of nuclear spin conversion. Spectra of C2H2 isolated in solid p-H2 show no evidence of rotation of C2H2. The strong interaction between ν3 and ν2 + ν4 + ν5 in the gas phase is diminished in solid p-H2. Lines associated with dimer, trimer and tetramer of C2H2 are identified. Spectral features characteristic of solid state acetylene are observed under jet-cooled conditions. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
