SnO2-based varistors doped with 0.5% cobalt, 0.5% zinc and various tantalum amounts were prepared by the solid-state route. Experimental evidence shows that small quantities of Ta2O5 improve the nonlinear properties of the samples significantly. It was found that samples doped with 0.05 mol% Ta2O5 exhibit the highest density (98.5%), the lowest electric breakdown field (E-b = 1050 V/cm) and the highest coefficient of nonlinearity (alpha = 11.5). The effect of Ta2O5 dopant could be explained by the substitution of Ta5+ by Sn4+. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd and Techna S.r.l. All rights reserved.

SnO2 based ceramics doped with 1.0 mol% ZnO, 1.0 mol% CoO, 0.1 mol% WO3 and 0.05 mol% Cr2O3 show varistor behavior with nonlinear coefficient alpha = 33, breakdown electric field E-B = 12.5 kV/cm, leakage current I = 0.63 mA/cm(2) and average grain size of 1.52 mu m. Experimental evidence shows that the addition of Cr2O3 improves the nonlinear properties of the samples significantly, the impedance data, represented by means of Nyquist diagrams, show a dramatic increase in the resistivity for the samples doped with Cr2O3. We have studied the phase transition behavior of Pb0.76Ca0.24TiO3 thin films using Raman scattering and dielectric measurement techniques. We also have studied the leakage current conduction mechanism as a function of temperature for these thin films on platinized silicon substrates. A Pb0.76Ca0.24TiO3 thin film was prepared using a soft chemical process, called the polymeric precursor method. The results showed that the dependence of the dielectric constant upon the frequency does not reveal any relaxor behavior. However, a diffuse character-type phase transition was observed upon transformation from a cubic paraelectric phase to a tetragonal ferroelectric phase. The temperature dependency of Raman scattering spectra was investigated through the ferroelectric phase transition. The soft mode showed a marked dependence on temperature and its disappearance at about 598 K. on the other hand, Raman modes persist above the tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive above the phase transition temperature. The origin of these modes must be interpreted in terms of a local breakdown of cubic symmetry by some kind of disorder. The lack of a well-defined transition temperature suggested a diffuse-type phase transition. This result corroborate the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in the thin film. The leakage current density of the PCT24 thin film was studied at elevated temperatures, and the data were well fitted by the Schottky emission model. The Schottky barrier height of the PCT24 thin film was estimated to be 1.49 eV. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Although it is generally accepted that osteoclasts breakdown and resorb bone matrix, the possibility that they may also be able to engulf apoptotic osteoblasts/ lining cells and/or osteocytes remains controversial. Apoptosis of osteoblasts/ lining cells and/or osteocytes and interactions between these cells and osteoclasts are extremely rapid events that are difficult to observe in viva. A suitable in viva model for studying these events is the alveolar bone of young rats because it is continuously. Thus, sections of aldehyde fixed alveolar undergoing intense resorption/remodeling bone of young rats were stained by the combined terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method and the tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) method for the simultaneous visualization of apoptotic cells and osteoclasts in the same section. The combined TUNEL and TRAP reactions, in the same section, greatly facilitated visualization of relationship between osteoclasts and apoptotic bone cells during alveolar bone remodeling. Our results showed that several TRAP-positive osteoclasts exhibited large vacuoles containing TUNEL positive apoptotic structures, probably derived from osteoblasts/lining cells and/or osteocytes. These results support the idea that alveolar bone osteoclasts are able to internalize dying apoptotic bone cells.

Dielectric and Raman scattering experiments were performed on polycrystalline Pb1-xCaxTiO3 thin films (x=0.10, 0.20, 0.30, and 0.40) as a function of temperature. The results showed no shift in the dielectric constant (K) maxima, a broadening with frequency, and a linear dependence of the transition temperature on increasing Ca2+ content. on the other hand, a diffuse-type phase transition was observed upon transforming from the cubic paraelectric to the tetragonal ferroelectric phase in all thin films. The temperature dependence of Raman scattering spectra was investigated through the ferroelectric phase transition. The temperature dependence of the phonon frequencies was used to characterize the phase transitions. Raman modes persisted above the tetragonal to cubic phase transition temperature, although all optical modes should be Raman inactive. The origin of these modes was interpreted in terms of a breakdown of the local cubic symmetry due to chemical disorder. The lack of a well-defined transition temperature and the presence of broad bands in some temperature interval above the FE-PE phase transition temperature suggested a diffuse-type phase transition. This result corroborates the dielectric constant versus temperature data, which showed a broad ferroelectric phase transition in these thin films.

The electrochemical behavior of Cu-xAl alloys, with 11 wt%less than or equal to x less than or equal to 15wt%, in 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied by means of open-circuit potential decay measurements, quasi-stationary and fast cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Some of the alloys (x less than or equal to 14%), when quenched formed martensitic structures. Alloys with greater than or equal to 13% showed a little square-shaped phase when quenched from temperatures around 800 degrees C. It was observed that in sulfuric medium, these formations were dealuminized differently than the martensitic phase. The values of the rest potentials are more influenced by the heat treatment rather than by the alloy composition. An anodic Tafel slope of ca. 60 mV/decade was observed for all the alloys, independently of the heat treatment. This is explained in terms of a competition between two processes: copper oxidation and copper(I) deproportionation. In the cyclic voltammetric experiments it was observed an anodic current peak, related with copper oxidation with a possible formation of some interfacial species, and a cathodic current peak during the reverse potential scan, associated with the reduction of soluble species and/or of the film. The AC Impedance data were interpreted in terms of electric equivalent circuits.

A study was made on the effect of the addition of BaO (0.025-0.05 mol%) and Bi2O3 (0.025-0.05 mol%) to the TiO2.Ta2O5.MnO2 material. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, and current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the nonlinear coefficient. An analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the materials. The most appropriate sintering conditions for the materials were analyzed with the purpose of obtaining the best nonlinear coefficient associated with the smallest breakdown electric field. After sintering at 1400 degreesC for 2 h, a low-voltage (30 V cm(-1)) varistor was obtained, which, however, presented a low nonlinear coefficient (6). It was found that the sintering conditions must be controlled in order to improve the electrical properties of these materials. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ta2O5 doped SnO2 varistor systems containing 0.5 mol% ZnO and 0.5 mol% Coo were prepared by mixed oxide method. Considering that ZnO and Coo oxides are densification additives only the SnO(2)center dot ZnO center dot CoO ceramics cannot exhibit electrical nonlinearity. A small amount of Ta2O5 improves the nonlinear properties of the samples greatly. The height and width of the defect barriers were calculated. It was found that samples doped with 0.05 mol% Ta2O5 exhibit the highest density (98.5%), the lowest electric breakdown field (E-b = 1100 V/cm) and the highest coefficient of nonlinearity (alpha = 11.5). The effect of Ta2O5 dopant could be explained by the substitution of Ta5+ by Sn4+. A grain-boundary defect barrier model for the SnO(2)center dot ZnO center dot CoO center dot Ta2O5 varistor system was also introduced. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. We discuss the problem of the breakdown of conformal and gauge symmetries at finite temperature in curved-spacetime background, when the changes in the background are gradual, in order to have a well-defined quantum field theory at finite temperature. We obtain the expressions for Seeley's coefficients and the heat-kernel expansion in this regime. As applications, we consider the self-interacting lambdaphi4 and chiral Schwinger models in curved backgrounds at finite temperature.
