Non-periodic structural variation has been found in the high T-c cuprates, YBa2Cu3O7-x and Hg0.67Pb0.33Ba2Ca2Cu3O8+delta, by image analysis of high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images. We use two methods for analysis of the HRTEM images. The first method is a means for measuring the bending of lattice fringes at twin planes. The second method is a low-pass filter technique which enhances information contained by diffuse-scattered electrons and reveals what appears to be an interference effect between domains of differing lattice parameter in the top and bottom of the thin foil. We believe that these methods of image analysis could be usefully applied to the many thousands of HRTEM images that have been collected by other workers in the high temperature superconductor field. This work provides direct structural evidence for phase separation in high T-c cuprates, and gives support to recent stripes models that have been proposed to explain various angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance data. We believe that the structural variation is a response to an opening of an electronic solubility gap where holes are not uniformly distributed in the material but are confined to metallic stripes. Optimum doping may occur as a consequence of the diffuse boundaries between stripes which arise from spinodal decomposition. Theoretical ideas about the high T-c cuprates which treat the cuprates as homogeneous may need to be modified in order to take account of this type of structural variation.

Introduction: The aims of this study were to evaluate the distances between the mandibular permanent teeth and the alveolar process in Brazilians with normal occlusion and to compare them with normal American values. Methods: We used 59 mandibular casts from untreated subjects who had permanent dentition and the 6 keys to normal occlusion. A computer program was used to calculate the distances between the dental reference points and the alveolar process for each tooth. The mean values were then compared to the normal values by applying the Student t test at a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed a progressive increase of these distances from the anterior region (incisors) to the posterior region (molars), from 0.00 to 2.49 mm. All measurements had statistically significant differences from the American sample, except for the values for canines and first premolars. Conclusions: Brazilians with normal occlusion have more lingual crown positions for the incisors, second premolars, and molars compared with Americans with normal occlusion. Although these findings were statistically significant, they are unlikely to be clinically significant. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2010; 137: 308.e1-308.e4)

At the World Fair in Philadelphia in 1876, the German goods on display were described as cheap and nasty, setting off a vigorous debate about the state of German industry. Social democrats attacked policies of increasing competitiveness of German exports through keeping wages low, and claimed that the quality of the goods produced by socialist workers was higher than those produced by others. An analysis of the debate shows the extent to which social democrats not only resorted to arguments stressing the national interest, but also the extent to which nominally Marxist socialists in this period were still attached to traditional artisanal values of pride in the quality of their work.

Aims: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and its associated proteins may be protective against the occurrence of apoptosis that would normally inhibit cancer development and progression. Alternatively, the viral infection may cause altered or mutated expression of oncogenes or tumour suppressor genes that are necessary for tumour development. an action that may also involve apoptosis, In this study, a relationship was sought between occurrence of EBV infection, expression of apoptosis-associated proteins (tumour suppressor gene p53 and oncogenes c-myc and bcl-2) and levels of cell death (apoptosis or necrosis) in 119 cases of gastric carcinoma. Methods and results: The EBV status of the gastric carcinomas (using the EBV-encoded small RNA I (EBER-1) and in-situ hybridization), stage and grade of tumour and sex of patients were compared for bcl-2, p53 and c-myc expression patterns. EBER-1 was detected in approximately 20% of cases studied. There was no significant correlation between levels of cell death in the tumour tissue and EBV status. In the protein analyses, development and progression of gastric carcinoma, with or without EBV infection. was independent of bcl-2 expression. However, in gastric cancers with EBV infection, p53 overexpression was inhibited and c-myc expression was increased in early stage cancers, in comparison with decreased c-myc expression in late stage cancers. Conclusions: The p53 and c-myc expression patterns indicate that EBV-infected gastric carcinomas are less likely to have a natural regression via apoptosis at an early stage and explain, in part, the resistance to treatment of late stage of gastric cancers.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of irradiation distance and the use of cooling in the Er:YAG laser efficacy in preventing enamel demineralization. Methods: 84 enamel blocks were randomly assigned to seven groups (n = 12): G1: control group - no treatment, G2-G7: experimental groups treated with Er:YAG laser (80 mJ/2 Hz) at different irradiation distances with or without cooling: G2: 4 mm/2 mL; G3: 4 mm/no cooling; G4: 8 mm/2 mL; G5: 8 mm/no cooling; G6: 16 mm/2 mL; G7: 16 mm/no cooling. The samples were submitted to an in vitro pH cycles for 14 days. Next, the specimens were sectioned in sections of 80-100 mu m in thickness and the demineralization patterns of prepared slices were assessed using a polarized light microscope. Three samples from each group were analyzed with scanning electronic microscopy. Analysis of variance and the Fisher test were performed for the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the caries-lesion-depth measurements (CLDM) (alpha = 5%). Results: The control group (CLDM = 0.67 mm) was statistically different from group 2 (CLDM = 0.42 mm), which presented a smaller lesion depth, and group 6 (0.91 mm), which presented a greater lesion depth. The results of groups 3 (CLDM = 0.74 mm), 4 (CLDM = 0.70 mm), 5 (CLDM = 0.67 mm) and 7 (CLDM = 0.89 mm) presented statistical similarity. The scanning electronic microscopy analysis showed ablation areas in the samples from groups 4, 5, 6 and 7, and a slightly demineralized area in group 2. Conclusions: It was possible to conclude that Er:YAG laser was efficient in preventing enamel demineralization at a 4-mm irradiation distance using cooling. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. The relative abundance and topographical distribution of retinal cone photoreceptors was measured in 19 bird species to identify possible correlations between photoreceptor complement and visual ecology. In contrast to previous studies, all five types of cone photoreceptor were distinguished, using bright field and epifluorescent light microscopy, in four retinal quadrants. Land birds tended to show either posterior dorsal to anterior ventral or anterior dorsal to posterior ventral gradients in cone photoreceptor distribution, fundus coloration and oil droplet pigmentation across the retina. Marine birds tended to show dorsal to ventral gradients instead. Statistical analyses showed that the proportions of the different cone types varied significantly across the retinae of all species investigated. Cluster analysis was performed on the data to identify groups or clusters of species on the basis of their oil droplet complement. Using the absolute percentages of each oil droplet type in each quadrant for the analysis produced clusters that tended to reflect phylogenetic relatedness between species rather than similarities in their visual ecology. Repeating the analysis after subtracting the mean percentage of a given oil droplet type across the whole retina (the 'eye mean') from the percentage of that oil droplet type in each quadrant, i.e. to give a measure of the variation about the mean, resulted in clusters that reflected diet, feeding behaviour and habitat to a greater extent than phylogeny.

In the last two decades, increasing numbers of workplaces in Australia have introduced 12-hour shifts. This increase is due, in part, to government policies aimed at promoting labour flexibility. The purpose of this paper is to examine the cover afforded by the Workplace Relations Act 1996 and other industrial relations legislation in terms of shift-workers’ health and safety. Particular reference is made to the broader social, economic and political context surrounding the introduction and use of 12-hour shifts, as it is this context that shapes the constraints and opportunities facing employers and employees in the work arrangements they choose and how they are negotiated. We conclude that the current system of regulating industrial relations in Australia is largely outcome-focused and inadequate. The bargaining process receives little regulation in terms of considering how changes could affect health and safety in the workplace or how changes might affect individual workers. As a result, the increased introduction of unsafe shiftworking arrangements is a worrying, and likely, prospect.

Lecithocladium invasor n.sp. is described from the oesophagus of Naso annulatus, N. tuberosus and N. vlamingii on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The worms penetrate the oesophageal mucosa and induce chronic transmural nodular granulomas, which expand the full thickness of the oesophageal wall and protrude both into the oesophageal lumen and from the serosal surface. We observed two major types of lesions: large ulcerated, active granulomas, consisting of a central cavity containing a single or multiple live worms; and many smaller chronic fibrous submucosal nodules. Small, identifiable but attenuated, worms and degenerate worm fragments were identified within some chronic nodules. Co-infection of the posterior oesophagus of the same Naso species with Lecithocladium chingi was common. L. chingi is redescribed from N. annulatus, N. brevirostris, N. tuberosus and A vlamingii. Unlike L. invasor n.sp., L. chingi was not associated with significant lesions. The different pathenogenicity of the two species in acanthurid fish is discussed.

Poor nutritional status in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is associated with severe lung disease, and possible causative factors include inadequate intake, malabsorption, and increased energy requirements. Body cell mass (which can be quantified by measurement of total body potassium) provides an ideal standard for measurements of energy expenditure. The aim of this study was to compare resting energy expenditure (REE) in patients with CF with both predicted values and age-matched healthy children and to determine whether REE was related to either nutritional status or pulmonary function. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry and body cell mass by scanning with total body potassium in 30 patients with CF(12 male, mean age = 13.07 +/- 0.55 y) and 18 healthy children (six male, mean age = 12.56 +/- 1.25 y). Nutritional status was expressed as a percentage of predicted total body potassium; Lung function was measured in the CF group by spirometry and expressed as the percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s. Mean REE was significantly increased in the patients with CF compared with healthy children (119.3 +/- 3.1% predicted versus 103.6 +/- 5% predicted, P < 0.001) and, using multiple regression techniques, REE for total body potassium was significantly increased in patients with CF (P = 0.0001). There was no relation between REE and nutritional status or pulmonary disease status in the CF group. In conclusion, REE is increased in children and adolescents with CF but is not directly related to nutritional status or pulmonary disease. Nutrition 2001;17:22-25. (C)Elsevier Science Inc. 2001.
