Deep basement penetration during Legs 69 and 70 at Hole 504B in the Panama Basin allowed the recovery of a 561.5-meter sequence of basaltic pillows, thin flows, and breccias interspersed with thick massive flows. The lavas, which are aphyric to moderately plagioclase-olivine-clinopyroxene phyric, are petrologically indistinguishable from typical mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORB). Some units are distinctive in that they carry accessory chrome-spinel microphenocrysts or emerald green clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Major and trace element analyses were carried out on 67 samples using X-ray fluorescence techniques. The basalts resemble normal MORB in terms of major elements. However, the trace element analyses show that most of the basalts are characterized by very strong depletion in the more incompatible elements compared with, for instance, normal (N type) MORB from the Atlantic at 22°N. Interdigitated with these units are one or two units that have distinctly higher incompatible element concentrations similar to those in basalts of the transitional (T) type from the Reykjanes Ridge (63°N in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). All the basalts appear to have undergone some high-level crystal fractionation, although this has not proceeded to the extent of yielding ferrobasalts as it has at the adjacent Galapagos Spreading Center or along the East Pacific Rise. The magnetic anomalies are of lower amplitude than in the latter two regions, which suggests that the absence of ferrobasalts may be a general feature of the ocean crust generated at the Costa Rica Rift. The presence of two distinct magma types, one strongly depleted and the other moderately enriched in incompatible elements, suggests that magma chambers at the spreading center are discontinuous rather than continuous and that there is some chemical heterogeneity in the underlying mantle source. Observed variations in incompatible element ratios of basalts from the more depleted group could, however, reflect mixing between these two magma types. In general it would appear that the mantle feeding the Costa Rica Rift is significantly more depleted in incompatible trace elements than that feeding the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

This paper presents the magnetostratigraphic results from Leg 108 of the Ocean Drilling Program. Measurements made with the shipboard "pass-through" cryogenic magnetometer on whole cores and archive halves are combined with those made on discrete samples; these measurements constitute the paleomagnetic data base for the Leg 108 cores. Polarity determination on unoriented, low-latitude cores is somewhat subjective; we rely heavily on the available biostratigraphic data and document our line of reasoning where appropriate. The interpretations presented here, therefore, are compatible with the available biostratigraphic information; they are also in substantial agreement with orientation information where available.

Conventional K-Ar ages have been determined and inert-gas abundances have been measured on representative samples of altered rocks from Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 501, 504B, and 505B in an attempt to correlate their degree of alteration with inert-gas and K-Ar data. Samples taken from the first 60 meters below the sediment/basalt interface give significantly higher ages than would be expected from the magnetic stratigraphy, though at greater depths the calculated ages are in broad agreement with the expected age. The inert gas ratios 20Ne/36Ar, 36Ar/84Kr, and 84Kr/130Xe also show a marked discontinuity at the 60-meter depth, and all these effects are interpreted as being a consequence of low-temperature alteration produced by burial metamorphism and by interaction with sea water (halmyrolysis).

The suitability of Portland cement blends for encapsulation of Cs-Ionsiv in a monolithic wasteform was investigated. No evidence of reaction or dissolution of the Cs-Ionsiv in the cementitious environment was found by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. However, a small fraction (≤1.6 wt%) of the Cs inventory was released from the encapsulated Ionsiv during leaching experiments carried out on hydrated samples. Cs release was enhanced by exchange of K and Na present in the cementitious pore water. Cement systems lower in K and Na, such as slag based blends, showed lower Cs release than the fly ash based analogues. © 2010 Materials Research Society.

Medical microbiology and virology laboratories use nucleic acid tests (NAT) to detect genomic material of infectious organisms in clinical samples. Laboratories choose to perform assembled (or in-house) NAT if commercial assays are not available or if assembled NAT are more economical or accurate. One reason commercial assays are more expensive is because extensive validation is necessary before the kit is marketed, as manufacturers must accept liability for the performance of their assays, assuming their instructions are followed. On the other hand, it is a particular laboratory's responsibility to validate an assembled NAT prior to using it for testing and reporting results on human samples. There are few published guidelines for the validation of assembled NAT. One procedure that laboratories can use to establish a validation process for an assay is detailed in this document. Before validating a method, laboratories must optimise it and then document the protocol. All instruments must be calibrated and maintained throughout the testing process. The validation process involves a series of steps including: (i) testing of dilution series of positive samples to determine the limits of detection of the assay and their linearity over concentrations to be measured in quantitative NAT; (ii) establishing the day-to-day variation of the assay's performance; (iii) evaluating the sensitivity and specificity of the assay as far as practicable, along with the extent of cross-reactivity with other genomic material; and (iv) assuring the quality of assembled assays using quality control procedures that monitor the performance of reagent batches before introducing new lots of reagent for testing.

This paper reports U-series dates on speleothem samples from Locality 15 at Zhoukoudian, one of the richest Paleolithic sites in northern China. The age of the lower part of Layer 2 is securely bracketed between 155,000 and 284,000 yr. The underlying Layer 3 dates back at least 284,000 yr. Layer 4, further below, should be older still, possibly by a cycle on the SPECMAP time scale before 284,000 yr ago. These ages, much greater than the previous estimates of 110,000-140,000 yr from U-series and electron spin resonance dating of fossil teeth, suggest that Locality 15 was broadly contemporaneous with Locality 4 (New Cave) and with the uppermost strata of Locality 1 (Peking Man site). The physical evolution and cultural development evidenced by the timing of the Zhoukoudian localities are in line with the opinion of Chinese anthropologists for a regional transition from Homo erectus to archaic Homo sapiens. A hydrogel intervertebral disc (lVD) model consisting of an inner nucleus core and an outer anulus ring was manufactured from 30 and 35% by weight Poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel (PVA-H) concentrations and subjected to axial compression in between saturated porous endplates at 200 N for 11 h, 30 min. Repeat experiments (n = 4) on different samples (N = 2) show good reproducibility of fluid loss and axial deformation. An axisymmetric nonlinear poroelastic finite element model with variable permeability was developed using commercial finite element software to compare axial deformation and predicted fluid loss with experimental data. The FE predictions indicate differential fluid loss similar to that of biological IVDs, with the nucleus losing more water than the anulus, and there is overall good agreement between experimental and finite element predicted fluid loss. The stress distribution pattern indicates important similarities with the biological lVD that includes stress transference from the nucleus to the anulus upon sustained loading and renders it suitable as a model that can be used in future studies to better understand the role of fluid and stress in biological IVDs. Purpose To assess the psychometric properties of the Simplified Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS 28) scale. Materials and Methods A prospective observational design was used. Patients were recruited from a medical-surgical intensive care unit (ICU) and 4 rehabilitation wards of 2 university-affiliated hospitals in Hong Kong. Results Data necessary for the calculation of the TISS 28, the Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS 76), and severity of illness scoring system (Simplified Acute Physiology Score [SAPS II]) were recorded for each patient during the first 24 hours after his/her admission to an ICU. A significant positive correlation was found between the TISS 76 and the TISS 28 scores as well as the TISS 28 and the SAPS II scores. There was a significant difference between the TISS 28 scores among ICU patients and patients in rehabilitation wards. A significant correlation was found between the TISS 28 scores of the first and second set of TISS 28 scores. Conclusions Although the findings supported the validity and reliability of the TISS 28, there were limitations of the TISS 28 in measuring nursing workload in ICUs. Hence, continued amendment and validation of the TISS 28 on larger samples in different ICUs would be required so as to provide clinical nurses with a valid and reliable assessment of nursing workload.

Zirconium phosphate has been extensively studied as a proton conductor for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. Here we report the synthesis of mesoporous, templated sol-gel zirconium phosphate for use in PEM applications in an effort to determine its suitability for use as a surface functionalised, solid acid proton conductor in the future. Mesoporous zirconium phosphates were synthesised using an acid-base pair mechanism with surface areas between 78 and 177 m(2) g(-1) and controlled pore sizes in the range of 2-4 nm. TEM characterisation confirmed the presence of a wormhole like pore structure. The conductivity of such materials was up to 4.1 x 10(-6) S cm(-1) at 22degreesC and 84% relative humidity (RH), while humidity reduction resulted in a conductivity decrease by more than an order of magnitude. High temperature testing on the samples confirmed their dependence on hydration for proton conduction and low hydroscopic nature. It was concluded that while the conductivity of these materials is low compared to Nafion, they may be a good candidate as a surface functionalised solid acid proton conductor due to their high surface area, porous structure and inherent ability to conduct protons.

The ability to make rapid measurements on small samples using laser fluorination enhances the potential of oxygen isotopes in the investigation of early inorganic materials and technologies. delta O-18 and Sr-87/Sr-86 values are presented for glass from two primary production sites, four secondary production sites and a consumer site in the Near East, dating from Late Antiquity to the medieval period. delta O-18 is in general slightly less effective than Sr-87/Sr-86 in discriminating between sources, as the spread of measured values from a single source is somewhat broader relative to the available range. However, while Sr-87/Sr-86 is derived predominantly from either the lime-bearing fraction of the glass-making sand or the plant ash used as a source of alkali, delta O-18 derives mainly from the silica. Thus the two measurements can provide complementary information. A comparison of delta O-18 for late Roman - Islamic glasses made on the coast of Syria-Palestine with those of previously analysed glasses from Roman Europe suggests that the European glasses are relatively enriched in O-18. This appears to contradict the view that most Roman glass was made using Levantine sand and possible interpretations are discussed.

Fast pyrolysis liquid or bio-oil has been used in engines with limited success. It requires a pilot fuel and/or an additive for successful combustion and there are problems with materials and liquid properties. It is immiscible with all conventional hydrocarbon fuels. Biodiesel, a product of esterification of vegetable oil with an alcohol, is widely used as a renewable liquid fuel as an additive to diesel at up to 20%. There are however limits to its use in conventional engines due to poor low temperature performance and variability in quality from a variety of vegetable oil qualities and variety of esterification processes. Within the European Project Bioliquids-CHP - a joint project between the European Commission and Russia - a study was undertaken to develop small scale CHP units based on engines and microturbines fuelled with bioliquids from fast pyrolysis and methyl esters of vegetable oil. Blends of bio-oil and biodiesel were evaluated and tested to overcome some of the disadvantages of using either fuel by itself. An alcohol was used as the co-solvent in the form of ethanol, 1-butanol or 2-propanol. Visual inspection of the blend homogeneity after 48 h was used as an indicator of the product stability and the results were plotted in a three phase chart for each alcohol used. An accelerated stability test was performed on selected samples in order to predict its long term stability. We concluded that the type and quantity of alcohol is critical for the blend formation and stability. Using 1-butanol gave the widest selection of stable blends, followed by blends with 2-propanol and finally ethanol, thus 1-butanol blends accepted the largest proportion of bio-oil in the mixture. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The reactions of directly related tellurium and selenium heterocyclic compounds with triiron dodecacarbonyl are described. The reaction of 2-telluraphthalide, C8H8OTe with [Fe3(CO)12 gave [Fe{C6H4(CH2)Te}(CO)3]2, (1). An iron atom has inserted into the telluracyclic ring, and it is probable that one co-ordinated CO ligand arises from the initially organic carbonyl group. X-ray analysis of compound (1) showed that the compound has a Fe2Te2 core, which is achieved by dimerisation. The reaction of telluraphthalic anhydride, C8H402Te with [Fe3(CO)12] gave a known, but unexpected, organic phthalide product, C8H602, which was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Selenaphthalic anhydride,  C8H4O2Se gave intractable products on reaction with [Fe3(CO)12], 2-selenaphthalide, C8H6OSe, on reaction with [Fe3(CO)12] gave a major product [Fe2{C6H4(CH2)Se}(CO)6], (2) and a minor product [Fe3{C6H4(CH2)Se}(CO)8], (3) which is an intermediate in the formation of (2). X-ray analysis of (2) shows that compound (2) is very similar to (1) except that the 18 electron rule is satisfied by co-ordination of a Fe(CO)3 moiety, rather than dimerisation. Compound (3), also studied by X-ray crystallography, differs from (2) mainly in the addition of an Fe(CO)2 moiety. Telluraphtbalic anhydride, C8H402Te, and selenaphthalic anhydride, C8H402Se, are both monoclinic and crystallise in space group P21/n. 2-Selenaphthalide, C8H402Se, is also monoclinic, space group P21/C. The reactions of the following compounds (l,3-dihydrobenzo[c]selenophene, 1,3,7,9-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2c; 4,5c'] ditellurophene, dibenzoselenophene, phenoxselenine, 3, 5-naphtho-1-telluracyclohexane and 3,5-naphtho-1-selenacyclohexane) with [Fe3lCO)12] are reported. It is unfortunate that the above compounds do not react under the conditions employed; this may be due to differing degrees of ring strain. 1,8-bis(bromomethyl)naphthalene, C12H10Br2 is monoclinic and crystallises in space group C2/c. 1,1-diiodo-3,5-naphthotelluracyclohexane, C12H10TeI2 and 3,5-naphtho-l-telluracyclohexane, C12H10Te are monoclinic and crystallise in space group P21/c. 3,5-naphtho-l-selenacyclohexane, C12H10Se and 2,2,8,8-tetraiodo-1,3,7,9-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2c;4,5c']ditellurophene are also monoclinic, space group P21/a. The syntheses of intramolecular stabilised organo-tellurium and selenium compounds are reported, having a general formula of REX (where R = phenylazophenyl; E = Se, Te; X = electronegative group, for example C1, Br or I). The crystal structures of R'TeBr, RTeI, RSeCI, RSeCI/I and RSeI (where R = phenylazophenyl) are reported. The tellurium containing X-ray structures are triclinic and have a space group P-1. The selenium containing X-ray structures are monoclinic with space group P21/n. The inclusion of nitrogen in selenium heterocycles provides access to an entirely new area of organometallic chemistry. The reaction of 2-methylbenzoselenazole with [Fe3(CO)12] gave [Fe2{C6H4(NCH2CH3)Se}(CO)6]. The reactions of 2-(methyltelluro)benzanilide or 2-(methylseleno)benzanilide with [Fe3(CO)12] gave reaction products [Fe2(μTeMe)2(CO)6] and [Fe2 (μ-SeMe)2(CO)6] respectively, which were confmned by X-ray crystallography. The use of Mossbauer spectroscopy on the products obtained from the reactions of heterocyclic compounds with [Fe3(CO)12] can give useful information, for example the number of iron sites and the environments of these iron sites within the products.

Bedrock geochemical analysis, coupled with detailed data analysis, was carried out on some 260 samples taken from two areas of 'the Harlech Dome, near Dolgellau, North Wales. This was done to determine if rocks from mineralised and non-mineralised areas could be distinguished, and to determine mineralisation types and wall rock alterations. The Northern Area, near Talsarnau, has no recorded mineralisation, while the Southern Area, near Bontddu, has been exploited for gold. The rocks sampled, in both areas, were from the Cambrian Gamlan Flags, Clogau Shales, Vigra Flags, later vein materials, and igneous intrusions. All samples were analysed, using a new rapid, atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique, for Si, AI, Fe, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Sr, Hg, and Ba. In addition 60 samples were analysed by X-ray fluorescence for Mn, Ti, Ca, K, Na, P, Cr, Ce, La, S, Y , Rh, and Th. Total CO2 was determined, on selected samples, using a combustion technique. Elemental distributions, for each rock type, in each area, were· plotted, and means, standard deviations, and enrichment indices were calculated. Multivariate statistical analysis on the results distinguished a Cu-type mineralisation in the Northern area, and both Cu and Pb/Zn types in the Southern Area. It also showed the Northern Area to be less strongly mineralised than the Southern one in which both mineralisation types are associated with wall rock alteration. Elemental associations and trends due to sedimentary processes were distinguished from those related to mineralisation. Hg is related to mineralisation, and plots of factor scores, on the sampling grid, produced clusters of mineralisation related factors in areas of known mineralisation. A double Fourier Trend Analysis program, with a wavelength search routine, was developed and used to recognise sedimentary trends for Sr. Y., Rb, and Th. These trends were interpreted to represent areas of low pH and reducing conditions. They also indicate that the supply of sediment remained constant over Gamlan, Clogau, and Vigra times. The trend surface of Hg showed no association with rock type. It is shown that analysis of a small number of samples, for a carefully selected number of elements, with detailed data analysis, can provide more useful information than analysis of a large number of samples for many elements. The mineralisation is suggested to have been the result of water solutions leaching ore metals from the sedimentary rocks and redepositing them in veins.

Aims: It is well established that the bile salt sodium taurocholate acts as a germinant for Clostridium difficile spores and the amino acid glycine acts as a co-germinant. The aim of this study was to determine whether any other amino acids act as co-germinants. Methods and Results: Clostridium difficile spore suspensions were exposed to different germinant solutions comprising taurocholate, glycine and an additional amino acid for 1 h before heating shocking (to kill germinating cells) or chilling on ice. Samples were then re-germinated and cultured to recover remaining viable cells. Only five amino acids out of the 19 common amino acids tested (valine, aspartic acid, arginine, histidine and serine) demonstrated co-germination activity with taurocholate and glycine. Of these, only histidine produced high levels of germination (97·9–99·9%) consistently in four strains of Cl. difficile spores. Some variation in the level of germination produced was observed between different PCR ribotypes, and the optimum concentration of amino acids with taurocholate for the germination of Cl. difficile NCTC 11204 spores was 10–100 mmol l-1. Conclusions: Histidine was found to be a co-germinant for Cl. difficile spores when combined with glycine and taurocholate. Significance and Impact of the Study: The findings of this study enhance current knowledge regarding agents required for germination of Cl. difficile spores which may be utilized in the development of novel applications to prevent the spread of Cl. difficile infection.

Empirical work on micro and small firms focuses on developed countries, while existing work on developing countries is all too often based on small samples taken from ad hoc questionnaires. The census data we analyze here are fairly representative of small business structure in India. Consistent with findings from prior research on developed countries, size and age have a negative impact on firm growth in the majority of specifications. Enterprises managed by women have lower expected growth rates. Proprietary firms face lower growth on the whole, especially if they are young firms. Exporting has a positive effect on firm growth, especially for young firms and for female-owned firms. Although some small firms are able to convert know-how into commercial success, we find that many others are unable to translate it into superior growth.
