In the present investigation of thin aerofoil wakes we compare the global nonlinear dynamics, obtained by direct numerical simulations, to the associated local instability features, derived from linear stability analyses. A given configuration depends on two control parameters: the Reynolds number Re and the adverse pressure gradient m (with m < 0) prevailing at the aerofoil trailing edge. Global instability is found to occur for large enough Re and |m|; the naturally selected frequency is determined by the local absolute frequency prevailing at the trailing edge. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCLs) are able to reduce fault currents to an acceptable value, reducing potential mechanical and thermal damage and allowing more flexibility in an electric power system's design. Due to limitations in current YBCO thin film manufacturing techniques, it is necessary to connect a number of thin films in different series and parallel configurations in order to realise a practical SFCL for electric power system applications. The amount of resistance generated (i.e. the degree of current limitation), the characteristics of the S-N transition, and the time at which they operate is different depending on their comparative characteristics. However, it is desirable for series-connected thin films to have an operating time difference as small as possible to avoid placing an excess burden on certain thin films. The role of a parallel resistance, along with the influence of thin film characteristics, such as critical current (Ic), are discussed in regards to the design of SFCLs using YBCO thin films. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Hybrid nanostructured materials can exhibit different properties than their constituent components, and can enable decoupled engineering of energy conversion and transport functions. Novel means of building hybrid assemblies of crystalline C 60 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are presented, wherein aligned CNT films direct the crystallization and orientation of C 60 rods from solution. In these hybrid films, the C 60 rods are oriented parallel to the direction of the CNTs throughout the thickness of the film. High-resolution imaging shows that the crystals incorporate CNTs during growth, yet grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) shows that the crystal structure of the C 60 rods is not perturbed by the CNTs. Growth kinetics of the C 60 rods are enhanced 8-fold on CNTs compared to bare Si, emphasizing the importance of the aligned, porous morphology of the CNT films as well as the selective surface interactions between C 60 and CNTs. Finally, it is shown how hybrid C 60-CNT films can be integrated electrically and employed as UV detectors with a high photoconductive gain and a responsivity of 10 5 A W -1 at low biases (± 0.5 V). The finding that CNTs can induce rapid, directional crystallization of molecules from solution may have broader implications to the science and applications of crystal growth, such as for inorganic nanocrystals, proteins, and synthetic polymers. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The utilisation of thin film technology to develop film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs) and solidly mounted resonators (SMRs), offers great potential to outperform the sensitivity and minimum detection limit of gravimetric sensors. Up to now, the choice between FBARs and SMRs depends primarily on the users' ability to design and fabricate Bragg reflectors and/or membranes, because neither of these two types of resonators has been demonstrated to be superior to the other. In the work reported here, it is shown that identically designed FBARs and SMRs resonating at the same frequency exhibit different responsitivities, Rm, to mass loadings, being the FBARs more responsive than the SMRs. For the specific device design and resonant frequency (∼2 GHz) of the resonators presented, FBARs' mass responsitivity is ∼20% greater than that of SMRs, and although this value should not be taken as universal for all possible device designs, it clearly indicates that FBAR devices should be favoured over SMRs in gravimetric sensing applications. © 2012 IEEE.

We present the development of a drug-loaded triple-layer platform consisting of thin film biodegradable polymers, in a properly designed form for the desired gradual degradation. Poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA (65:35), PLGA (75:25)) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were grown by spin coating technique, to synthesize the platforms with the order PCL/PLGA (75:25)/PLGA (65:35) that determine their degradation rates. The outer PLGA (65:35) layer was loaded with dipyridamole, an antiplatelet drug. Spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) in the Vis-far UV range was used to determine the nanostructure, as well as the content of the incorporated drug in the as-grown platforms. In situ and real-time SE measurements were carried out using a liquid cell for the dynamic evaluation of the fibrinogen and albumin protein adsorption processes. Atomic force microscopy studies justified the SE results concerning the nanopores formation in the polymeric platforms, and the dominant adsorption mechanisms of the proteins, which were defined by the drug incorporation in the platforms. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
