The discriminatory power of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to differentiate between isogenic teicoplanin-susceptible and teicoplanin-resistant strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

To explore the discriminatory power of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for detecting subtle differences in isogenic isolates, we tested isogenic strains of Staphylococcus aureus differing in their expression of resistance to methicillin or teicoplanin. More important changes in MALDI-TOF MS spectra were found with strains differing in methicillin than in teicoplanin resistance. In comparison, very minor or no changes were recorded in pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles or peptidoglycan muropeptide digest patterns of these strains, respectively. MALDI-TOF MS might be useful to detect subtle strain-specific differences in ionizable components released from bacterial surfaces and not from their peptidoglycan network.

Biología y pesquería del pampanito pintado, Stromateus stellatus Cuvier, en la zona de Huacho (Perú) durante enero a setiembre 1999

Presenta los resultados obtenidos del seguimiento de la pesquería artesanal del pampanito pintado de la zona de Huacho, entre los meses de enero a setiembre de 1999, con el objetivo de conocer la biología, pesquería y la relación recurso-ambiente. Asimismo, se realizó el estudio de las condiciones biológicas, desembarques, captura, esfuerzo y de las condiciones oceanográficas del recurso pampanito pintado.

Statistical discrimination of black gel pen inks analysed by laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry

Pearson correlation coefficients were applied for the objective comparison of 30 black gel pen inks analysed by laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). The mass spectra were obtained for ink lines directly on paper using positive and negative ion modes at several laser intensities. This methodology has the advantage of taking into account the reproducibility of the results as well as the variability between spectra of different pens. A differentiation threshold could thus be selected in order to avoid the risk of false differentiation. Combining results from positive and negative mode yielded a discriminating power up to 85%, which was better than the one obtained previously with other optical comparison methodologies. The technique also allowed discriminating between pens from the same brand.

Poly-N-acetyl glucosamine fibers are synergistic with vacuum-assisted closure in augmenting the healing response of diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND: Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) has become the preferred modality to treat many complex wounds but could be further improved by methods that minimize bleeding and facilitate wound epithelialization. Short fiber poly-N-acetyl glucosamine nanofibers (sNAG) are effective hemostatic agents that activate platelets and facilitate wound epithelialization. We hypothesized that sNAG used in combination with the VAC device could be synergistic in promoting wound healing while minimizing the risk of bleeding. METHODS: Membranes consisting entirely of sNAG nanofibers were applied immediately to dorsal excisional wounds of db/db mice followed by application of the VAC device. Wound healing kinetics, angiogenesis, and wound-related growth factor expression were measured. RESULTS: The application of sNAG membranes to wounds 24 hours before application of the VAC device was associated with a significant activation of wounds (expression of PDGF, TGFβ, EGF), superior granulation tissue formation rich in Collagen I as well as superior wound epithelialization (8.6% ± 0.3% vs. 1.8% ± 1.1% of initial wound size) and wound contraction. CONCLUSIONS: The application of sNAG fiber-containing membranes before the application of the polyurethane foam interface of VAC devices leads to superior healing in db/db mice and represents a promising wound healing adjunct that can also reduce the risk of bleeding complications.

Exploración pesquera en la zona Ilo - San Juan. Crucero SNP-1 - 6902

Presenta los resultados de la exploración pesquera, con la finalidad de obtener un control de las condiciones oceanográficas, complementada con información general sobre la presencia de cardúmenes pelágicos. Además, hace hincapié en la investigación sobre la distribución de la anchoveta basada en la localización acústica o identificación por pesca y realiza por primera vez en Ilo, los arrastres exploratorios de fondo para determinar los tipos de peces demersales presentes.

Investigación preliminar de índices microbiológicos determinantes de la sanidad de las especies ícticas de mayor comercialización en la zona de Lima

Expone que el control de la calidad alimentaria presenta tres aspectos: físico-organoleótico, microbiológico y químico, cada cual con su metodología propia. Las especies destinadas al consumo humano requieren una calidad satisfactoria con el fin de garantizar sus cualidades nutricionales y sanitarias, por lo que es importante efectuar controles cualitativos de estos productos.

Intenta detectar las áreas de mayor distribución de los langostinos, asimismo busca encontrar poblaciones de crustáceos de interés económico potencial, como el camaroncillo rojo, langostino rosado, langostino cáscara dura y la gamba roja.

Exploración de crustáceos (Zona sur) Crucero SNP-1 7201

Da a conocer los resultados de las observaciones tomadas por el Crucero 7201 del SNP-1 que tuvo lugar entre el 24 de enero y el 4 de febrero de 1972, cubriendo las zonas del Callo y la frontera de Chile, con la finalidad de realizar la exploración de la región batial, determinar las límites de distribución vertical y latitudinal de los géneros de camarones rojos, determinar la densidad aproximada de las poblaciones de los crustáceos para establecer la magnitud de los recursos y realizar las observaciones electro-acústicas y de la naturaleza de los fondos, para localizar los ejemplares más adecuados para la pesca comercial.

Analiza los resultados del procesamiento de la información relacionada a la potencialidad y dinámica extractiva de los pescadores artesanales, del área litoral comprendida entre los paralelos 3,4° y 6,5° de latitud sur (S) y los meridianos 80,0°-82,5°de longitud oeste (W) que conforman la zona de más alta diversidad y producción pesquera artesanal en el litoral peruano, frete a las costas de los departamentos de Tumbes y Piura.

Effects of hatching asynchrony on sibling negotiation, begging, jostling for position and within-brood food allocation in the barn owl Tyto alba

When siblings differ markedly in their need for food, they may benefit from signalling to each other their willingness to contest the next indivisible food item delivered by the parents. This sib-sib communication system, referred to as 'sibling negotiation', may allow them to adjust optimally to investment in begging. Using barn owl (Two alba) broods. I assessed the role of within-brood age hierarchy on sibling negotiation, and in turn on jostling for position where parents predictably deliver food (i.e. nest-box entrance), begging and within-brood food allocation. More specifically, I examined three predictions derived from a game-theoretical model of sibling negotiation where a senior and a junior sibling compete for food resources (Roulin, 2002a, Johnstone and Roulin, 2003): (1) begging effort invested by the senior sibling should be less sensitive to the junior sibling's negotiation than vice versa; (2) the junior should invest less effort in sibling negotiation than its senior sibling but a similar amount of effort in begging; and (3) within-brood food allocation should be directly related to begging but only indirectly to sibling negotiation. Two-chick broods were created and vocalization in the absence (negotiation signals directed to siblings) and presence (begging signals directed to parents) of parents was recorded. In support of the first prediction, juniors begged at a low cadence after their senior sibling negotiated intensely, probably because negotiation reflects prospective investment in begging and hence willingness to compete. In contrast, the begging of senior siblings was not sensitive to their junior sibling's negotiation. In contrast to the second prediction, juniors negotiated and begged more intensely than their senior sibling apparently because they were hungrier rather than younger. In line with the third prediction, juniors monopolized food delivered by their parents when their senior sibling begged at a low level. The begging cadence of both the junior and senior sibling, the junior's negotiation cadence, the difference in age between the two nest-mates and jostling for position were not associated with the likelihood of monopolizing food. In conclusion, sibling negotiation appears to influence begging behaviour, which, in turn, affects within-brood food allocation. Juniors may negotiate to challenge their senior siblings, and thereby determine whether seniors are less hungry before deciding to beg for food. In contrast, seniors may negotiate to deter juniors from begging.
