Large-scale disasters are constantly occurring around the world, and in many cases evacuation of regions of city is needed. ‘Operational Research/Management Science’ (OR/MS) has been widely used in emergency planning for over five decades. Warning dissemination, evacuee transportation and shelter management are three ‘Evacuation Support Functions’ (ESF) generic to many hazards. This thesis has adopted a case study approach to illustrate the importance of integrated approach of evacuation planning and particularly the role of OR/MS models. In the warning dissemination phase, uncertainty in the household’s behaviour as ‘warning informants’ has been investigated along with uncertainties in the warning system. An agentbased model (ABM) was developed for ESF-1 with households as agents and ‘warning informants’ behaviour as the agent behaviour. The model was used to study warning dissemination effectiveness under various conditions of the official channel. In the transportation phase, uncertainties in the household’s behaviour such as departure time (a function of ESF-1), means of transport and destination have been. Households could evacuate as pedestrians, using car or evacuation buses. An ABM was developed to study the evacuation performance (measured in evacuation travel time). In this thesis, a holistic approach for planning the public evacuation shelters called ‘Shelter Information Management System’ (SIMS) has been developed. A generic allocation framework of was developed to available shelter capacity to the shelter demand by considering the evacuation travel time. This was formulated using integer programming. In the sheltering phase, the uncertainty in household shelter choices (either nearest/allocated/convenient) has been studied for its impact on allocation policies using sensitivity analyses. Using analyses from the models and detailed examination of household states from ‘warning to safety’, it was found that the three ESFs though sequential in time, however have lot of interdependencies from the perspective of evacuation planning. This thesis has illustrated an OR/MS based integrated approach including and beyond single ESF preparedness. The developed approach will help in understanding the inter-linkages of the three evacuation phases and preparing a multi-agency-based evacuation planning evacuation

We demonstrate 40x43Gbit/s RZ-DQPSK transmission over 1000km of ultra-low-loss G.652 fibre with 250km amplifier spacing. Hybrid Raman-EDFA amplification with co- and contra-directional Raman pumping enables 27dB Raman gain per span and error-free post-FEC performance. ©2010 IEEE.

We perform optimisation of bi-directionally pumped dispersion compensating Raman amplifier modules. Optimal forward and backward pump powers for basic configurations using different commercially available fibers are presented for both single- and multi-channel systems. Optical signal-to-noise ratio improvement of up to 8 dB is achieved as a result of optimisation. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A broadly tunable master-oscillator power-amplifier (MOPA) picosecond optical pulse source is demonstrated, consisting of an external cavity passively mode-locked laser diode with a tapered semiconductor amplifier. By employing chirped quantum-dot structures on both the oscillator's gain chip and amplifier, a wide tunability range between 1187 and 1283 nm is achieved. Under mode-locked operation, the highest output peak power of 4.39 W is achieved from the MOPA, corresponding to a peak power spectral density of 31.4 dBm/nm. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

Nonlinear CW pump broadening over non-standard transmission fibre is used for the first time to achieve improved gain flatness in a single-pump broadband Raman amplifier. As an illustration of the benefits that can be obtained from this approach, a threefold increase in the bandwidth for 0.1 dB gain variation is reported when the broadened pump is used to produce 9.2 dB on-off gain over 25 km LEAF fibre. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. We propose and numerically demonstrate a new concept of fibre laser architecture supporting self-similar pulse evolution in the amplifier and nonlinear pulse spectral compression in the passive fibre. The latter process is beneficial for improving the power efficiency as it prevents strong spectral filtering from being highly dissipative. © 2012 OSA.

We investigate the energy optimization (minimization) for amplified links. We show that using the using a well-established analytic nonlinear signal-to-noise ratio noise model that for a simple amplifier model there are very clear, fiber independent, amplifier gains which minimize the total energy requirement. With a generalized amplifier model we establish the spacing for the optimum power per bit as well as the nonlinear limited optimum power. An amplifier spacing corresponding to 13 dB gain is shown to be a suitable compromise for practical amplifiers operating at the optimum nonlinear power. © 2014 Optical Society of America.

In this work, we utilize modulation instability to the broadening of the two CW-pumps of a wideband Raman amplifier. Applying nonlinear fiber process, we demonstrate a feasibility of a certain control over the broadening process, leading to clear improvements in the flatness of the amplifier gain over its operational bandwidth.

The performances of L-band EDFA are modeled and analyzed, based on C-band EDFA, through variation of pump power, ion concentration and fiber length. The fiber length promises higher performance than others. © 2005 Optical Society of America.

In this paper, we present an analysis and optimisation of the performance of bi-directionally pumped dispersion compensation modules acting as simultaneous Raman amplifiers, with optimal configurations for operation with different fibers commercially available. The ratio between forward and backward pump powers for minimum noise influence is obtained in each case, with improvements in the SNR of up to 8 dB when compared to a purely backward-pumped case.
