This work describes the development, electrochemical characterization and utilization of a cobalt phthalocyanine modified carbon nanotube electrode for the quantitative determination of dopamine in 0.2 mol L-1 phosphate buffer contaminated with high concentration of ascorbic acid. The electrode surface was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy which showed a modified surface presenting a charge transfer resistance of 500 Omega, against the 16.46 k Omega value found for the bare glassy carbon surface. A pseudo rate constant value of 5.4 x 10(-4) cm s(-1) for dopamine oxidation was calculated. Voltammetric experiments showed a shift of the peak potential of DA oxidation to less positive value at 390 mV as compared with that of a bare GC electrode at 570 mV. The electrochemical determination of dopamine, in presence of ascorbic acid in concentrations up to 0.1 mol L-1 by differential pulse voltarnmetry, yielded a detection limit as low as 2.56 x 10(-7) mol L-1.

This work describes the electroanalytical determination of pendimethalin herbicide levels in natural waters, river sediment and baby food samples, based on the electro-reduction of herbicide on the hanging mercury drop electrode using square wave voltammetry (SWV). A number of experimental and voltammetric conditions were evaluated and the best responses were achieved in Britton-Robinson buffer solutions at pH 8.0, using a frequency of 500 s(-1). a scan increment of 10 mV and a square wave amplitude of 50 mV. Under these conditions, the pendimethalin is reduced in an irreversible process, with two reduction peaks at -0.60 V and -0.71 V. using a Ag/AgCl reference system. Analytical curves were constructed and the detection limit values were calculated to be 7.79 mu g L(-1) and 4.88 mu g L(-1), for peak 1 and peak 2, respectively. The precision and accuracy were determinate as a function of experimental repeatability and reproducibility, which showed standard relative deviation values that were lower than 2% for both voltammetric peaks. The applicability of the proposed methodology was evaluated in natural water, river sediments and baby food samples. The calculated recovery efficiencies demonstrate that the proposed methodology is suitable for determining any contamination by pendimethalin in these samples. Additionally, adsorption isotherms were used to evaluate information about the behavior of pendimethalin in river sediment samples. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the development, electrochemical characterization and utilization of a cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), modified multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and paraffin composite electrode for the quantitative determination of epinephrine (EP) in human urine samples. The electrochemical profile of the proposed composite electrode was analyzed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) that showed a shift of the oxidation peak potential of EP at 175 mV to less positive value, compared with a paraffin/graphite composite electrode without CoPc. DPV experiments in PBS at pH 6.0 were performed to determine EP without any previous step of extraction, clean-up, and derivatization, in the range from 1.33 to 5.50 mu mol L(-1), with a detection limit of 15.6 nmol L(-1) (2.86) of EP in electrolyte prepared with purified water. The lifetime of the proposed sensors was at least over 1000 determinations with 1.7 and 3.1 repeatability and reproducibility relative standard deviations, respectively. Human urine samples without any purification step were successfully analyzed under the standard addition method using paraffin/MWCNT/CoPc composite electrode. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A copper phthalocyanine/multiwalled carbon nanotube film-modified glassy carbon electrode has been used for the determination of the herbicide glyphosate (Gly) at -50 mV vs. SCE by electrochemical oxidation using differential pulse voltamtnetry (DPV). Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that Gly is adsorbed on the metallic centre of the copper phthalocyanine molecule, with formation of Gly-copper ion complexes. An analytical method was developed using DPV in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution, without any pretreatment steps: Gly was determined in the concentration range of 0.83-9.90 mu mol L(-1), with detection limit 12.2 nmol L(-1) (2.02 mu g L(-1))

The development and application of a functionalized carbon nanotubes paste electrode (CNPE) modified with crosslinked chitosan for determination of Cu(II) in industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples by linear scan anodic stripping voltammetry (LSASV) are described. Different electrodes were constructed using chitosan and chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (CTS-GA) and epichlorohydrin (CTS-ECH). The best voltammetric response for Cu(II) was obtained with a paste composition of 65% (m/m) of functionalized carbon nanotubes, 15% (m/m) of CTS-ECH, and 20% (m/m) of mineral oil using a solution of 0.05 mol L(-1) KNO(3) with pH adjusted to 2.25 with HNO(3), an accumulation potential of 0.3V vs. Ag/AgCl (3.0 mol L(-1) KCl) for 300 s and a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1). Under these optimal experimental conditions, the voltammetric response was linearly dependent on the Cu(II) concentration in the range from 7.90 x 10(-8) to 1.60 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) with a detection limit of 1.00 x 10(-8) mol L(-1). The samples analyses were evaluated using the proposed sensor and a good recovery of Cu(II) was obtained with results in the range from 98.0% to 104%. The analysis of industrial wastewater, natural water and human urine samples obtained using the proposed CNPE modified with CTS-ECH electrode and those obtained using a comparative method are in agreement at the 95% confidence level. A new vanadium (IV) complex with the monoanion of 2,3-dihydroxypyridine (H(2)dhp), or 3-hydroxy-2(1H)-pyridone, was synthesized, characterized by physicochemical techniques and tested biologically. The EPR data for the [VO(Hdhp)(2)] complex in DMF are: g(x) = 1.9768, g(y) = 1.9768 and g(z) = 1.9390; A values (10(-4) cm(-1)): A(x), 59.4; A(y//), 59.4; A(z), 171.0. The vV=O band in the IR spectrum of the complex is at 986 cm(-1). The complex is paramagnetic, with mu(eff) = 1.65 BM (d(1), spin-only) at 25 degrees C. The irreversible oxidation process [V(V)/V(IV)] of the [VO(Hdhp)(2)] complex, as revealed in a cyclic voltammogram, occurs at 876 mV. The calculated molecular structure of [VO(Hdhp)(2)] shows the vanadium(IV) center in a distorted square pyramidal environment, with the oxo ligand in the apical position and the oxygen donor atoms of the Hdhp ligands in the basal positions. The ability of [VO(Hdhp)(2)] to mimic insulin, and its toxicity to hepato-biliary functions, were investigated in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and it was concluded that the length of treatment and the amount of [VO(Hdhp)(2)] administered were effective in reducing experimental diabetes.

The electrochemical methods cyclic and square-wave voltammetry were applied to develop an electroanalytical procedure for the determination of N-nitrosamines (N-nitrosopyrrolidine, N-nitrosopiperidine and N-nitrosodiethylamine) in aqueous solutions. Cyclic voltammetry was used to evaluate the electrochemical behaviors of N-nitrosamines on boron-doped diamond electrodes. It was observed an irreversible electrooxidation peak located in approximately 1.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) for both N-nitrosamines. The optimal electrochemical response was obtained using the following square-wave voltammetry parameters: f = 250 Hz, E(sw) = 50 mV and E(s) = 2 mV using a Britton-Robinson buffer solution as electrolyte (pH 2). The detection and quantification limits determined for total N-nitrosamines were 6.0 x 10(-8) and 2.0 x 10(-7) mol L(-1), respectively.

Carbon-supported platinum is commonly used as an anode electrocatalyst in low-temperature fuel cells fueled with methanol. The cost of Pt and the limited world supply are significant barriers for the widespread use of this type of fuel cell. Moreover, Pt used as anode material is readily poisoned by carbon monoxide produced as a byproduct of the alcohol oxidation. Although improvements in the catalytic performance for methanol oxidation were attained using Pt-Ru alloys, the state-of-the-art Pt-Ru catalyst needs further improvement because of relatively low catalytic activity and the high cost of noble Pt and Ru. For these reasons, the development of highly efficient ternary platinum-based catalysts is an important challenge. Thus, various compositions of ternary Pt(x)-(RuO(2)-M)(1-x)/C composites (M = CeO(2), MoO(3), or PbO(x)) were developed and further investigated as catalysts for the methanol electro-oxidation reaction. The characterization carried out by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry point out that the different metallic oxides were successfully deposited on the Pt/C, producing small and well-controlled nanoparticles in the range of 2.8-4.2 nm. Electrochemical experiments demonstrated that the Pt(0.50)(RuO(2)-CeO(2))(0.50)/C composite displays the higher catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction (lowest onset potential of 207 mV and current densities taken at 450 mV, which are 140 times higher than those at commercial Pt/C), followed by the Pt(0.75)(RuO(2)-MoO(3))(0.25)/C composite. In addition, both of these composites produced low quantities of formic acid and formaldehyde when compared to a commercially available Pt(0.75)-Ru(0.25)/C composite (from E-Tek, Inc.), suggesting that the oxidation of methanol occurs mainly by a pathway that produces CO(2) forming the intermediary CO(ads).

Cu(II) ions previously coordinated with typical electroplating organic additives were investigated as an alternative source of metal for plating bath. The coordination complexes were isolated from reaction between CuSO(4) and organic additives as ligands (oxalate ion, ethylenediamine or imidazole). Deposits over 1010 steel were successfully obtained from electroplated baths using the complexes without any addition of free additives, at pH = 4.5 (H(2)SO(4)/Na(2)SO(4)). These deposits showed better morphologies than deposits obtained from CuSO(4) solution either in the absence or presence of oxalate ion as additive (40 mmol L(-1)), at pH = 4.5 (H(2)SO(4)/Na(2)SO(4))It is suggestive that the starting metal plating coordinated with additives influences the electrode position processes, providing deposits with corrosion potentials shifted over + 200 mV in 0.5 mol L(-1) NaCl (1 mV s(-1)). The resistance against corrosion is sensitive to the type of additive-complex used as precursor. The complex with ethylenediamine presented the best deposit results with the lowest pitting potential (-0.27 V vs 3.0 mol L(-1) CE). It was concluded that the addition of free additives to the electrodeposition baths is not necessary when working with previously coordinated additives. Thus, the complexes generated in ex-situ are good alternatives as plating precursors for electrodeposition bath. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The search for more efficient anode catalyst than platinum to be used in direct alcohol fuel cell systems is an important challenge. In this study, boron-doped diamond film surfaces were modified with Pt, Pt-SnO(2) and Pt-Ta(2)O(5) nano-crystalline deposits by the sol-gel method to study the methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation reactions in acidic medium. Electrochemical experiments carried out in steady-state conditions demonstrate that the addition of SnO(2) to Pt produces a very reactive electrocatalyst that possibly adsorbs and/or dissociate ethanol more efficiently than pure Pt changing the onset potential of the reaction by 190 mV toward less positive potentials. Furthermore, the addition of Ta(2)O(5) to Pt enhances the catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation resulting in a negative shift of the onset potential of 170 mV. These synergic effects indicate that the addition of these co-catalysts inhibits the poisoning effect caused by strongly adsorbed intermediary species. Since the SnO(2) catalyst was more efficient for ethanol oxidation, it could probably facilitate the cleavage of the C-C bond of the adsorbed intermediate fragments of the reaction. Folate is shown to react with singlet-excited state of riboflavin in a diffusion controlled reaction and with triplet-excited state of riboflavin in a somewhat slower reaction with (3)k(q) = 4.8 x 10(8) L mol(-1) s(-1) in aqueous phosphate buffer at pH 7.4, ionic strength of 0.2 mol L(-1), and 25 degrees C. Singlet quenching is assigned as photo-induced reductive electron transfer from ground state folate to singlet-excited riboflavin, while triplet quenching is assigned as one-electron transfer rather than hydrogen atom transfer from folate to triplet-excited riboflavin, as the reaction quantum yield, phi = 0.32, is hardly influenced by solvent change from water to deuterium oxide, phi = 0.37. Cyclic voltammetry showed an irreversible two-electron anodic process for folate, E = 1.14 V versus NHE at a scan-rate of 50 mV s(-1), which appears to be kinetically controlled by the heterogeneous electron transfer from the substrates to the electrode. Main products of folate photooxidation sensitized by riboflavin were pterin-6-carboxylic acid and p-aminobenzoyl-L-glutamic acid as shown by liquid chromatographic ion-trap mass spectrometry (LC-IT-MS).

This study presents the preparation, characterization and application of copper octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane following its subsequent reaction with azide ions (ASCA). The precursor (AC) and the novel compound (ASCA) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analyses and voltammetric technique. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified graphite paste electrode with ASCA (GPE-ASCA), showed one redox couple with formal potential (E(1/2)(ox)) = 0.30 V and an irreversible process at 1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl; NaCl 1.0 M; v = 20 mV s(-1)). The material is very sensitive to nitrite concentrations. The modified graphite paste electrode (GPE-ASCA) gives a linear range from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 4.0 x 10(-3) mol L(-1) for the determination of nitrite, with a detection limit of 2.1 x 10(-4) mol L(-1) and the amperometric sensitivity of 8.04 mA/mol L(-1). A simple and highly selective electrochemical method was developed for the single or simultaneous determination of paracetamol (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, acetaminophen) and caffeine (3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione) in aqueous media (acetate buffer, pH 4.5) on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode using square wave voltammetry (SWV) or differential Pulse voltammetry (DPV). Using DPV with the cathodically pre-treated BDD electrode, a separation of about 550 mV between the peak oxidation potentials Of paracetamol and caffeine present in binary mixtures was obtained. The calibration curves for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine showed an excellent linear response, ranging from 5.0 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) to 8.3 x 10(-7) mol L(-1) for both compounds. The detection limits for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine were 4.9 x 10(-7) mol L-1 and 3.5 x 10(-8) mol L(-1), respectively. The proposed method Was Successfully applied in the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine in several pharmaceutical formulations (tablets), with results similar to those obtained using a high-performance liquid chromatography method (at 95% confidence level). Obteve-se, desta forma, copolímeros aceptores do tipo poli (isopreno - co-cloranil) e poli(isopreno-co-(3,5-dinitro-benzoato)) e copolímero doador do tipo poli(isopreno- co-carbazola).
