Spatial distribution of Yellow Sigatoka Leaf Spot correlated with soil fertility and plant nutrition

This study analyzed the spatial distribution of Yellow Sigatoka Leaf Spot relative to soil fertility and plant nutritional status using geostatistics. The experimental area comprised 1.2 ha, where 27 points were georeferenced and spaced on a regular grid 18 × 18 m. The severity of Yellow Sigatoka, soil fertility and plant nutritional status were evaluated at each point. The spherical model was adjusted for all variables using restricted maximum likelihood. Kriging maps showed the highest infection rate of Sigatoka occurred in high areas of the field which had the highest concentration of sand, while the lowest disease was found in lower areas with lower silt, organic matter, total exchangeable bases, effective cation exchange capacity, base saturation, Ca and Mg in soil, and foliar sulfur (S). These results may help farmers manage Yellow Sigatoka disease more effectively, with balanced fertilization and reduced fungicide application. This practice minimizes the environmental impact and cost of production while contributing to production sustainability.

In the composition of this work are present two parts. The first part contains the theory used. The second part contains the two articles. The first article examines two models of the class of generalized linear models for analyzing a mixture experiment, which studied the effect of different diets consist of fat, carbohydrate, and fiber on tumor expression in mammary glands of female rats, given by the ratio mice that had tumor expression in a particular diet. Mixture experiments are characterized by having the effect of collinearity and smaller sample size. In this sense, assuming normality for the answer to be maximized or minimized may be inadequate. Given this fact, the main characteristics of logistic regression and simplex models are addressed. The models were compared by the criteria of selection of models AIC, BIC and ICOMP, simulated envelope charts for residuals of adjusted models, odds ratios graphics and their respective confidence intervals for each mixture component. It was concluded that first article that the simplex regression model showed better quality of fit and narrowest confidence intervals for odds ratio. The second article presents the model Boosted Simplex Regression, the boosting version of the simplex regression model, as an alternative to increase the precision of confidence intervals for the odds ratio for each mixture component. For this, we used the Monte Carlo method for the construction of confidence intervals. Moreover, it is presented in an innovative way the envelope simulated chart for residuals of the adjusted model via boosting algorithm. It was concluded that the Boosted Simplex Regression model was adjusted successfully and confidence intervals for the odds ratio were accurate and lightly more precise than the its maximum likelihood version.

Os guaribas, do gênero Alouatta, que são os primatas do Novo Mundo com maior distribuição geográfica, têm sido colocados em três grupos de espécies: o grupo Alouatta palliata da América central, e os grupos sulamericanos Alouatta seniculus e Alouatta caraya. Este último é monotípico, mas o grupo A. seniculus inclui pelo menos três espécies (A. seniculus, A. belzebul e A. fusca). Neste estudo, foram seqüenciados aproximadamente 600 pares de base do pseudogene globina g1 nas quatro espécies brasileiras (A. seniculus, A. belzebul, A. fusca e A. caraya). Os métodos de máxima parcimônia e máxima verossimilhança produziram árvores filogenéticas com o mesmo arranjo: {A. caraya [A. seniculus (A. fusca, A. belzebul)]}. A árvore mais parcimoniosa apresentou valores de bootstrap maiores de 82% para todos os agrupamentos, e valores de força de ligação de pelo menos 2, apoiando o agrupamento irmão de A. fusca e A. belzebul. O estudo também confirmou a presença em A. fusca do elemento de inserção Alu, com 150 pares de base, e uma deleção de 1,8 kb no pseudogene globina g1 já conhecidos nas demais espécies de guaribas. A classificação cladística baseada em dados moleculares é congruente com as de estudos morfológicos, com um isolamento claro do grupo monoespecífico A. caraya em relação ao grupo A. seniculus.

Previous cytochrome B (CytB) mtDNA studies have suggested four species for the opossum genus Philander (four-eyed opossums), three (P. mcilhennyi, P. andersoni and P. opossum) from the Amazon and one (P. frenata) from the Brazilian Atlantic forest. During a faunal survey nine specimens of Philander sp. and four of Didelphis marsupialis were collected in the Mamirauá Sustainable Reserve, Amazonas State, Brazil. Preliminary analyses based on morphology and geographical distributions were not conclusive, suggesting that Philander specimens could belong to either P. andersoni or P. opossum. In order to elucidate the relationship of this taxon to the remaining Amazonian taxa, seven Philander and two Didelphis specimens animals were sequenced for the cytB mtDNA gene and compared to other previously studied taxa. The maximum likelihood (ML), neighbor-Joining (NJ) and maximum parsimony (MP) consensus bootstrap trees depicted six groups: Didelphis., P. frenata, P andersoni, P. mcilhennyi, P.o. opossum and Philander sp. and Philander canus in a common assemblage supported by significant bootstrap values, suggesting that the Philander sp. from Mamiraua in fact belongs to the species Philander canus.
