Hidden for the untrained eye through a thin layer of sand, laminated microbial sediments occur in supratidal beaches along the North Sea coast. The inhabiting microbial communities organize themselves in response to vertical gradients of light, oxygen or sulfur compounds. We performed a fine-scale investigation on the vertical zonation of the microbial communities using a lipid biomarker approach, and assessed the biogeochemical processes using a combination of microsensor measurements and a 13C-labeling experiment. Lipid biomarker fingerprinting showed the overarching importance of cyanobacteria and diatoms in these systems, and heterocyst glycolipids revealed the presence of diazotrophic cyanobacteria even in 9 to 20 mm depth. High abundance of ornithine lipids (OL) throughout the system may derive from sulfate reducing bacteria, while a characteristic OL profile between 5 and 8 mm may indicate presence of purple non-sulfur bacteria. The fate of 13C-labeled bicarbonate was followed by experimentally investigating the uptake into microbial lipids, revealing an overarching importance of cyanobacteria for carbon fixation. However, in deeper layers, uptake into purple sulfur bacteria was evident, and a close microbial coupling could be shown by uptake of label into lipids of sulfate reducing bacteria in the deepest layer. Microsensor measurements in sediment cores collected at a later time point revealed the same general pattern as the biomarker analysis and the labeling experiments. Oxygen and pH-microsensor profiles showed active photosynthesis in the top layer. The sulfide that diffuses from deeper down and decreases just below the layer of active oxygenic photosynthesis indicates the presence of sulfur bacteria, like anoxygenic phototrophs that use sulfide instead of water for photosynthesis.

Stable isotope measurements on the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white) have been carried out on a number of selected deep-seas sediment cores from the South Lau and Norlh Fiji Basins. The d18O-curves show good correlation with the inter-ocean oraphic correlation composite d18O-record of the standard reference section (Prell et al. 1986), which, in combination with the chronostratigraphic classifications of Herterich & Sarnthein (1984, modified) and Imbrie et al. 1984), allows a detailed dating of the sedimentary sequences. The deepest layers in core no. 119 (southern Lau Basin) could be assigned to Isotope Stage 24. Measurements made on bulk carbonate in two cores show a much higher glacial-interglacial amplitude, allowing the general identification of the conventional oxygen isotope stages. The d13C-values of the benthic foraminifer Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi show progressively lighter values northwards reflecting an increasing contribution of the isotopically lighter CO2 from the remineralisation of organic matter during the general northward movement of the deep water masses. Cyclicities in the sedimentation rates were observed in core nos. 117 and 119 (both southern Lau Basin) where the interglacials exhibit higher levels than the glacials. Calculated new or export paleoproductivity show that the glacials had higher productivity in the euphotic zone. From the oxygen isotope stratigraphy, the five ash layers in core nos. 117 and 119 could be dated as about 530 ka B.P. in Stage 14, 695 ka B.P. in Stage 18, 775 ka B.P. in Stage 21, 790 ka B.P. and 825 ka B.P. in Stage 22. Carbonate dissolution occurred during stages 5, 8 and 10 to 12.

Comprehensive isotopic studies based on data from the Deep Sea Drilling Project have elucidated numerous details of the low- and high-temperature mechanisms of interaction between water and rocks of ocean crustal seismic Layers 1 and 2. These isotopic studies have also identified climatic changes during the Meso-Cenozoic history of oceans. Data on the abundance and isotopic composition of sulfur in the sedimentary layer as well as in rocks of the volcanic basement are more fragmentary than are oxygen and carbon data. In this chapter we specifically concentrate upon isotopic data related to specific features of the mechanisms of low-temperature interaction of water with sedimentary and volcanogenic rocks. The Leg 59 data provide a good opportunity for such lithologic and isotopic studies, because almost 600 meters of basalt flows and sills interbedded with tuffs and volcaniclastic breccias were cored during the drilling of Hole 448A. Moreover, rocks supposedly exposed to hydrothermal alteration play an important role at the deepest horizons of that mass. Sulfur isotopic studies of the character of possible biogenic processes of sulfate reduction in sediments are another focus, as well as the nature and origin of sulfide mineralization in Layer-2 rocks of remnant island arcs. Finally, oxygen and carbon istopic analyses of biogenic carbonates in the cores also enabled us to investigate the effects of changing climatic conditions during the Cenozoic. These results are compared with previous data from adjacent regions of the Pacific Ocean. Thus this chapter describes results of isotopic analyses of: oxygen and sulfur of interstitial water; oxygen and carbon of sedimentary carbonates and of calcite intercalations and inclusions in tuffs and volcaniclastic breccias interbedded with basalt flows; and sulfur of sulfides in these rocks.

Miocene to Quaternary sediments from the Oki Ridge (Site 798) and the Kita-Yamato Trough (Site 799) in the Japan Sea contain organic carbon ranging from about 0.6% in light-colored layers to almost 6% in dark layers. The organic matter consists of a variable mixture of marine and terrigenous contributions, the ratio of which is not correlated to the total organic carbon content. Marine organic particles clearly dominate in the deeper section of Hole 799B. The extractable bitumen is strongly dominated by long-chain alkenones from microalgae in the shallower sediments, whereas bishomohopanoic acid (C32) of eubacterial origin is the single most abundant compound in deeper samples. Normal alkanes and straight-chain carboxylic acids, both of which show a bimodal distribution with odd and even carbon-number predominance, respectively, are two other groups of compounds which are important constituents of the extracts. The deepest samples at Site 799 contain a considerable amount of short-chain components, which probably migrated upward from thermally more altered deeper sediments.

X-ray powder diffraction and optical and scanning-electron microscope analyses of sediment samples taken from four sites drilled in the Goban Spur area of the northeast Atlantic show variable diagenetic silicification of sediments at several stratigraphic horizons. The results are as follows: 1. The silicified sediments are middle Eocene at Site 548, Paleocene to lower Albian at Site 549, upper to lower Paleocene at Site 550, and lower Turanian at Site 551. 2. There are three types of these silicified sediments: nodular type in carbonate-rich host sediments, bedded type in clayey host sediments, and a type transitional between the other two. 3. Silica diagenesis is considered to progress as follows: dissolution of siliceous fossils; precipitation of opal CT in pore spaces and transformation of biogenic silica (opal A) to opal CT, development of opal CT cement; chalcedonic quartz precipitation in pore spaces and replacement of foraminiferal tests by chalcedonic quartz; and finally, transformation of opal CT to quartz, and cementation. But the strong influence of host-sediment types on diagenetic silica fades is recognized. Bedded-type silicified sediments in a clayey environment indicate a lower grade of silica diagenesis. Only very weak chalcedonic quartz formation is recognized, and there is no opal CT cementation, even in Lower Cretaceous bedded-type clayey silicified sediments. 4. The rf(101) spacing of opal CT shows two distinct trends of ordering or decrease with burial depth; one is a rapid change, in the case of nodular silicified sediments, and the other is a more gentle shift, found in bedded silicified sediments. 5. Diagenetic silica facies of the nodular type develop as irregular concentric zones around some nodule nuclei. Also, quartz-chert nodule formation occurs at rather shallower horizons, and is discordant with the trend of decreasing d(101) spacing in opal CT. 6. Silicified sediments at Site 551 are shallower than at the other sites. The diagenetic silica facies suggest the probable erosion of 300 m or more of sediment at this site. 7. The zeolites clinoptilolite and phillipsite were found in the sediment samples recovered on Leg 80. Clinoptilolite occurs from the shallower levels to the deepest horizons of diagenetically silicified zones, suggesting that clinoptilolite formation is related to diagenesis of biogenic silica. Phillipsite at Site 551 (Section 551-5-2) may originate from volcanogenie material.

Leg 140 of the Ocean Drilling Program deepened Hole 504B to a total depth of 2000.4 m below seafloor (mbsf), making it the deepest hole drilled into ocean crust. Site 504, south of the Costa Rica Rift, is considered the most important in-situ reference section for the structure of shallow ocean crust. We present the results of studies of magnetic mineralogy and magnetic properties of Hole 504B upper crustal rocks recovered during Legs 137 and 140. Results from this sample set are consistent with those discussed in Pariso et al. (this volume) from Legs 111, 137, and 140. Coercivity (Hc) ranges from 5.3 to 27.7 mT (mean 12 mT), coercivity of remanence (HCR) ranges from 13.3 to 50.6 mT (mean 26 mT), and the ratio HCR/HC ranges from 1.6 to 3.19 (mean 2.13). Saturation magnetization (JS) ranges from 0.03 to 5.94 * 10**-6 Am**2, (mean 2.52 * 10**-6 Am**2), saturation remanence (JR) ranges from 0.01 to 0.58 * 10**-6 Am2 (mean 0.37 * 10**-6 Am**2), and the ratio JR/JS ranges from 0.08 to 0.29 (mean 0.16), consistent with pseudo-single-domain behavior. Natural remanent magnetization (NRM) intensity ranges from 0.029 to 7.18 A/m (mean 2.95 A/m), whereas RM10 intensity varies only from 0.006 to 4.8 A/m and has a mean of only 1.02 A/m. Anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) intensity ranges from 0.04 to 6.0 A/m, with a mean of 2.46 A/m, and isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) intensity ranges from 0.5 to 1683 A/m, with a mean of 430.7 A/m. Volume susceptibility ranges from 0.0003 to 0.043 SI (mean 0.011 SI). In all samples examined, high-temperature oxidation of primary titanomagnetite has produced lamellae or pods of magnetite and ilmenite. Hydrothermal alteration has further altered the minerals in some samples to a mixture of magnetite, ilmenite, titanite, and a high-titanium mineral (either rutile or anatase). Electron microprobe analyses show that magnetite lamellae are enriched in the trivalent oxides Cr2O3, Al2O3, and V2O5, whereas divalent oxides (MnO and MgO) are concentrated in ilmenite lamellae.

A morphologically complex igneous basement was penetrated at Leg 125 Site 786 beneath approximately 100 m of Eocene-Pleistocene sediments at 31°52.45 'N, 141°13.59'E in a 3082-m water depth. The site is located on the forearc basement high (FBH) of the Izu-Bonin (Ogasawara) Arc. In the broadest terms, the sequence in Hole 786B consists of a basal sheeted dike complex, heavily mineralized in places, with overlying pillow lavas giving way to a complex and repeated sequence of interlayered volcanic breccias and lava flows with some thin sedimentary intervals. The sequence has been further cut by dikes or sills, particularly of high-Ca and intermediate-Ca boninite, and is locally strongly sheared by faulting. The whole basement has been covered with middle Eocene-early Pleistocene sediments. A monomict breccia forms the shallowest portion of Hole 786B and a polymict breccia having Mn-oxide-rich clast coatings and matrix forms the deepest part of Hole 786A (-100-160 mbsf). The basement is tectonized in some places, and a mineralized stockwork is present in the deepest part of Hole 786B. A wide variety of rock types form this basement, ranging from mafic to silicic in character and including high-, intermediate-, and low-Ca boninites, intermediate- and low-Ca bronzite andesites, andesite, dacite, and rhyolite groups. Intragroup and intergroup relationships are complicated in detail, and several different upper mantle source(s) probably were involved. A significant role for orthopyroxene-clinopyroxene-plagioclase fractionation is indicated in the mafic-intermediate groups, and the most probable complementary cumulates should be noritic gabbros. Many overall similarities but some subtle differences are noted between the igneous basement at Site 786 and the subaerial outcrops of the FBH to the south in the type boninite locality of Chichijima. Both suites were derived by hydrous melting of a relatively shallow, refractory (harzburgitic) upper mantle source. These Bonin forearc basement rocks are similar in many respects to those of Eocene-Oligocene age now forming the forearc of the Marianas at Leg 60 Site 458 and on Guam. In sharp distinction, the geochemistry of the Eocene-Pleistocene ash sequences overlying the Bonin FBH must have been derived from a very different upper mantle source, implying considerable across-strike differences in sub-arc mantle composition.
