Using methods of analysis from organic geochemistry and organic petrography, we investigated six Pliocene to Maestrichtian samples from DSDP Site 612 and five Pliocene to Eocene samples from DSDP Site 613 for the quantity, type, and thermal maturity of organic matter. At both sites, organic carbon content is low in the Eocene samples (0.10 to 0.20%) and relatively high in the Pliocene/Miocene samples (0.87 to 1.15%). The Maestrichtian samples from Site 612 contain about 0.6% organic carbon. The organic matter is predominantly terrigenous, as indicated by low hydrogen index values from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and the dominance of long-chain wax alkanes in the extractable hydrocarbons. The organic matter is at a low level of thermal maturity; measured vitrinite reflectance values were between 0.27 and 0.44%.

The North Atlantic at present is ventilated by overflow of the Denmark Strait, Iceland-Faeroe Ridge, Faeroe Bank Channel, and Wyville-Thompson Ridge. The evolution of Cenozoic abyssal circulation of this region was related to tectonic opening and subsidence of these sills. We used d13C records of the benthic foraminifer Cibicidoides to decipher the timing of tectonically controlled changes in bottom-water circulation in the eastern basins (Biscay and Iberian) of the northern North Atlantic. Records from Site 608 (Kings Trough, northeastern North Atlantic) show that from about 24 to 15 Ma (early to early middle Miocene), d13C values in the Kings Trough area were depleted relative to western North Atlantic values and were more similar to Pacific d13C values. This reflects less ventilation of the Kings Trough region as compared to the well-oxygenated western North Atlantic. Comparison of Oligocene d13C records from Site 119 (Bay of Biscay) with western North Atlantic records suggests that the eastern basin was also relatively isolated prior to 24 Ma. At about 15 Ma, d13C values at Site 608 attained values similar to the western North Atlantic, indicating increased eastern basin ventilation in the middle Miocene. This increased advection into the eastern basin predated a major d18O increase which occurred at about 14.6 Ma. Subsidence estimates of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge indicate that the deepening of the Iceland-Faeroe Ridge was coincident with the marked change in eastern basin deep-water ventilation.

Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments 435 m thick were drilled at Site 511, in the basin province of the Falkland Plateau, during DSDP Leg 71. The calcareous Unit 3 and the clayey zeolitic Unit 4, both of Senonian age, revealed poorly preserved organic matter indicative of oxidized environments. The same characteristics prevailed for the clayey Unit 5 of Turonian to Albian age. Strictly reducing environments existed for black facies along Unit 6 of earliest Albian to Late Jurassic age and allowed the preservation of a rich organic material that is marine in origin. Besides the transition from reducing conditions in Unit 6 to oxidizing conditions in Unit 5, there are 20 meters of sediments in Cores 56-58 where detrital, nonmarine and then marine organic matter, both implying more or less reducing environments, are interlain by poorly preserved material. In the black shales of the bottom Cores 69 and 70, some nonmarine detritus is mixed with the predominantly marine organic material. An immature stage of evolution can be assigned to all of the samples studied. The chapter also undertakes a comparison with contemporaneous lithologies at adjacent Sites 327 and 330 and attempts some reconstruction of the geography of the eastern Falkland Plateau during the Mesozoic.

Oxygen- and carbon-isotope analyses have been performed on the Quaternary planktonic foraminifers of Sites 548 and 549 (DSDP Leg 80) to investigate major water mass changes that occurred in the northeastern Atlantic at different glacial-interglacial cycles and to compare them with the well-defined picture of 18,000 yr. ago. Oxygen-isotope stratigraphy also provides a chronological framework for the more important data on the fauna and flora. Although bioturbation and sedimentary gaps obliterate the climatic and stratigraphic record, general trends in the oceanographic history can be deduced from the isotopic data. Isotopic stratigraphy has tentatively been delineated down to isotopic Stage 16 at Site 548 and in Hole 549A. This stratigraphy fits well with that deduced from benthic foraminiferal d18O changes and with bioclimatic zonations based on foraminiferal associations at Site 549. Variations in the geographic extension and in the flux of the Gulf Stream subtropical waters are inferred from both d18O and d13C changes. Maximal fluxes occurred during the late Pliocene. Northward extension of subtropical waters increased through the various interglacial phases of the early Pleistocene and decreased through the late Pleistocene interglacial phases. Conversely, glacial maxima were more intense after Stage 16. Isotopic Stages 12 and 16 mark times of important change in water mass circulation. Pyrolysis assay, bitumen analysis, and elemental analysis of kerogen were used to characterize the organic matter of selected core samples from Hole 534A (Leg 76) and Hole 391C (Leg 44) on the Blake-Bahama Plateau. The organic matter throughout the stratigraphic section appears to be principally of a terrestrial origin. The data from several isolated horizons in the Hatteras and Blake-Bahama Formations imply the presence of significant quantities of autochthonous marine organic matter. However, these horizons appear so limited that they cannot be considered potential liquid hydrocarbon source rocks. All the analyzed samples are immature and have not evolved sufficiently to enter into the main stage of hydrocarbon generation. The temporal and spatial restrictions of strata rich in marine organic matter suggest that they do not represent major expansions and contractions of anoxic bottom-water masses, but represent limited occurrences of anoxic conditions.

Nodules occur in the siliceous calcareous ooze and siliceous marl at Site 503 in the eastern equatorial Pacific. They are present below a depth of about 11 meters throughout the green-colored reduced part of the section down to 228 meters, although they are most abundant between 30 and 85 meters. They are cylindrical or barrel-shaped, up to 70 mm long, and usually have an axial channel through them or are hollow. They appear to have formed around and/or within burrows. XRD studies and microprobe analyses show that they are homogeneous and consist of calcian rhododrosite and minor calcite; Mn is present to the extent of about 30%. Isotopic analyses of the carbonate give carbon values which range from -1.2 per mil to -3.8 per mil, and oxygen isotope compositions vary from +4.0 per mil to +6.0 per mil. These values are different from those for marine-derived carbonates as exemplified by the soft sediment filling of a burrow: d13C, -0.26 per mil; d18O, +1.05 per mil. The carbon isotope data indicate that carbonate derived (possibly indirectly) from seawater was mixed with some produced by organic diagenesis to form the nodules. The d18O values suggest that although they formed near the sediment surface, some modification or the introduction of additional diagenetic carbonate occurred during burial.

Analyses of sediments from Leg 64 sites reveal a diverse and in one case unique geochemistry. Sites are characterized by high heat flow along an active, divergent plate boundary, or rapid accumulation of diatom muds, or both. The geochemical trends of Sites 474-476 at the tip of Baja California reflect changes4n the percentages of sedimentary components - particularly biogenous matter and mineralogy - that support interpretations of sedimentary environments inferred to be present since the commencement of subsidence along this young, passive continental margin. The sediments below dolerite sills in Holes 477, 477A, 478, and 481 show major mineralogic and chemical deviations from "average" hemipelagic sediments. The sills appear to have two functions: (1) they allow hydrothermal circulation and metamorphism in a partially closed system by trapping heat and fluids emanating from below, and (2) they expel heated interstitial fluids at the moment of intrusion and mobilize elements, most likely leading to the formation of metalliferous deposits along the surface traces of normal faults in the basin. The hydrothermal system as a whole appears to be localized and ephemeral, as is indicated by the lack of similar geochemical trends and high heat flow at Sites 478 and 481. Site 479 illustrates sedimentation in an oxygen-minimum zone with anoxic sediments and concomitant geochemical trends, especially for MnO. With few exceptions, geochemical trends are remarkably constant with depth, suggesting that Site 479 can serve as an "internal" standard or average sediment against which the magnitude of hydrothermal alteration at the basinal Sites 477, 478, and 481 can be measured.

Grain size of 139 unconsolidated sediment samples from seven DSDP sites in the Guaymas Basin and the southeastern tip of the Baja California Peninsula was determined by sieve and pipette techniques. Shepard (1954) classification and Inman (1952) parameters correlation were used for all samples. Sediment texture ranged from sand to silty clay. On the basis of grain-size parameter, the sediments can be divided into three broad groups: (1) very fine sands and coarse silts; (2) medium- to very fine silts; and (3) clays and coarse silts.

During DSDP Leg 65, a series of holes was drilled into the oceanic basement across the mouth of the Gulf of California to study the composition of the crust and the nature of its construction at a young spreading center. In Holes 483 and 483B, two of the deepest basement holes drilled on this leg, the basement is characterized by an upper sequence of interlayered massive basalts and sediments underlain by a lower sequence of interlayered pillow and massive basalts. Electron microprobe analyses were performed on pyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, spinel, and glass from 14 representative samples of 10 of the 16 major lithologic units. These analyses along with petrographic results can be used to interpret the detailed crystallization history of the basalts. We believe from the results of this study that the basalts were formed by at least a three-stage cooling process, followed by eruption and formation of quench phases. Our data do not support magma mixing.

Paleomagnetic results from sediments acquired from the continental margin at DSDP Sites 548, 549, 550, and 551 are described. Where possible, the results were used to construct a polarity reversal stratigraphy for the sections sampled, thus enabling the biostratigraphic dating of the sediments to be refined. Several sections in this study were found to be suitable for magnetostratigraphic work, in particular the upper Paleocene to middle Eocene sediments from Site 549, which contained rich faunal assemblages. These sediments are underlain by a thick sequence of Cretaceous sediments that formed during the Long Cretaceous normal polarity interval. Sediments that formed during the later part of this magnetically quiet interval were also recovered at Site 550. Three short reverse polarity intervals were also recovered at this site; they lie directly over basement and are thought to represent a mixed-polarity interval of late Albian age. They may therefore provide important evidence concerning the age of the earliest sediments at this site. In addition, measurements of the magnetic susceptibility and intensity of remanent magnetism proved to be of interest. A significant decrease in the susceptibility and intensity values close to the early/middle Eocene boundary was noted at Sites 548 and 549. This decrease may be correlated with the results from Holes 400A and 401, which were drilled on DSDP Leg 48 in the northeast Bay of Biscay. The decrease may represent an abrupt reduction in the supply of terrigenous material at the end of the early Eocene, reflecting, perhaps, a change in sediment transport processes at that time

Five heavy mineral associations occur in the Paleocene and Eocene sediments recovered during Leg 81 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) in the SW Rockall area. Association 1, consisting of augite, iddingsite, and olivine, was derived from the basaltic rocks of the northern part of the Rockall Plateau. Association 2 consists of epidote group minerals, including piedmontite, and amphiboles of actinolite, actinolitic hornblende, and magnesio-hornblende compositions, and was derived from the metamorphic basement of south Greenland. Association 3 comprises garnet, augite, apatite, and edenitic and pargasitic amphiboles and has a provenance in the southern Rockall Plateau. Associations 4 (garnet, apatite, edenitic/pargasitic amphiboles) and 5 (garnet, apatite) are intrastratal solution derivatives of Association 3, with successive removal of first pyroxene and then amphibole with increasing depth of burial. Throughout the SW Rockall Plateau area there is a significant change in the spectrum of the above assemblages in the lower part of the Eocene. This change has been noted at Sites 403, 404, 553, and 555 and is defined by the last appearance of Association 2. This level therefore marks the cessation of sediment supply from southern Greenland and is the result of the final separation of Rockall and Greenland immediately prior to magnetic Anomaly 24.

At Sites 566, 567, and 570 of Leg 84, ophiolitic serpentinite basement was covered by a sequence of serpentinitic mud that was formed by weathering of the serpentinites under sea- or pore-water conditions. Several mineralogical processes were observed: (1) The serpentinitic mud that consists mainly of chrysotile was formed from the lizardite component of the serpentinites by alteration. (2) Slightly trioctahedral smectites containing nonexpandable mica layers, trioctahedral smectites containing nonexpandable chlorite layers, and swelling chlorites were presumably formed from detrital chlorite and/or serpentine. (3) The occurrence of tremolite, chlorite, analcime, and talc can be attributed to reworking of gabbroic ophiolite rocks. (4) Dolomite, aragonite, and Mg-calcite, all authigenic, occur in the serpentinitic mud.

Variations of acoustic properties within the sediment column may significantly affect the propagation of acoustic energy in the upper portion of the oceanic crust. Moreover, the acoustic properties of sediments reflect their mineral compositions, fabrics, and degrees of compaction and cementation. Hence, the physical properties of indurated deep-sea sediments are of considerable geophysical and geological interest. Chalks and limestones are particularly important because substantial accumulations of biogenic carbonates are generally present at the base of the deep-sea sediment column, and high-standing features such as Hess Rise are capped by calcareous deposits. This paper constitutes a preliminary report of the compressional-wave velocities and densities of 31 indurated calcareous sediment samples recovered at DSDP Sites 463 and 465, in the Mid-Pacific Mountains and on Hess Rise, respectively. The sample set includes nine pairs of samples in which velocities were measured parallel and perpendicular to bedding to determine the velocity anisotropy of the sediment. This research is part of an ongoing study of the seismic properties of indurated deep-sea carbonates.

Visual kerogen and total organic carbon determinations indicate that there are two periods of organic enrichment events in the Mesozoic sediments of the South Atlantic. The first period, from the Late Jurassic through the late Aptian, is recorded in sediments from the Falkland Plateau, the Cape Basin, and the Angola Basin. Apparently, salinity stratification in the restricted basin, coupled with rising sea level, led to bottom water anoxia and organic enrichment. The second event, from the late Albian to the Santonian period, is recorded in sediments from the Angola Basin and the Sao Paulo Plateau. It appears to have been caused by development of an anoxic oxygen minimum zone at midwater depths. Organic matter sedimentation in the Mesozoic South Atlantic is controlled by geologic, climatic, eustatic, and Oceanographic factors.
