During the Early Toarcian, major paleoenvironnemental and paleoceanographical changes occurred, leading to an oceanic anoxic event (OAE) and to a perturbation of the carbon isotope cycle. Although the standard biochronology of the Lower Jurassic is essentially based upon ammonites, in recent years biostratigraphy based on calcareous nannofossils and dinoflagellate cysts is increasingly used to date Jurassic rocks. However, the precise dating and correlation of the Early Toarcian OAE, and of the associated delta C-13 anomaly in different settings of the western Tethys, are still partly problematic, and it is still unclear whether these events are synchronous or not. In order to allow more accurate correlations of the organic rich levels recorded in the Lower Toarcian OAE, this account proposes a new biozonation based on a quantitative biochronology approach, the Unitary Associations (UA), applied to calcareous nannofossils. This study represents the first attempt to apply the UA method to Jurassic nannofossils. The study incorporates eighteen sections distributed across western Tethys and ranging from the Pliensbachian to Aalenian, comprising 1220 samples and 72 calcareous nannofossil taxa. The BioGraph [Savary, J., Guex, J., 1999. Discrete biochronological scales and unitary associations: description of the Biograph Computer program. Memoires de Geologie de Lausanne 34, 282 pp] and UA-Graph (Copyright Hammer O., Guex and Savary, 2002) softwares provide a discrete biochronological framework based upon multi-taxa concurrent range zones in the different sections. The optimized dataset generates nine UAs using the co-occurrences of 56 taxa. These UAs are grouped into six Unitary Association Zones (UA-Z), which constitute a robust biostratigraphic synthesis of all the observed or deduced biostratigraphic relationships between the analysed taxa. The UA zonation proposed here is compared to ``classic'' calcareous nannofossil biozonations, which are commonly used for the southern and the northern sides of Tethys. The biostratigraphic resolution of the UA-Zones varies from one nannofossil subzone or part of it to several subzones, and can be related to the pattern of calcareous nannoplankton originations and extinctions during the studied time interval. The Late Pliensbachian - Early Toarcian interval (corresponding to the UA-Z II) represents a major step in the Jurassic nannoplankton radiation. The recognized UA-Zones are also compared to the carbon isotopic negative excursion and TOC maximum in five sections of central Italy, Germany and England, with the aim of providing a more reliable correlation tool for the Early Toarcian OAE, and of the associated isotopic anomaly, between the southern and northern part of western Tethys. The results of this work show that the TOC maximum and delta C-13 negative excursion correspond to the upper part of the UA-Z II (i.e., UA 3) in the sections analysed. This article discusses the construction of tri-sector partnerships in three projects conducted in Brazil in different fields of intervention of public policy (access to water, basic education and performance of boards of rights of children and adolescents). Collaborative articulations involving the players from three sectors (the State, civil society and the market) are practices that are little studied in the Brazilian and even in the international context, as tri-sector partnerships are rare, despite the proliferation of lines of discourse in support of alliances between governments and civil society or between companies and NGOs in the management of public policy. As a research strategy, this study resorted to cooperative inquiry, a method that involves breaking down the boundaries between the subjects and the objects of the analysis. Besides working toward a better understanding of the challenges of building tri-sector partnerships in the Brazilian context, the article also tries to show the relevance to public policy studies of investigative methods based on the subjects studied, as a means of developing an understanding of the practices, lines of discourse and dilemmas linked to social action in social programs.

Genes affect not only the behavior and fitness of their carriers but also that of other individuals. According to Hamilton's rule, whether a mutant gene will spread in the gene pool depends on the effects of its carrier on the fitness of all individuals in the population, each weighted by its relatedness to the carrier. However, social behaviors may affect not only recipients living in the generation of the actor but also individuals living in subsequent generations. In this note, I evaluate space-time relatedness coefficients for localized dispersal. These relatedness coefficients weight the selection pressures on long-lasting behaviors, which stem from a multigenerational gap between phenotypic expression by actors and the resulting environmental feedback on the fitness of recipients. Explicit values of space-time relatedness coefficients reveal that they can be surprisingly large for typical dispersal rates, even for hundreds of generations in the future.

Morphological and functional effects of transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMLR) are analyzed in an acute setting on a porcine model. Ten channels were drilled in the left lateral wall of the heart of 15 pigs (mean weight, 73 +/- 4 kg) with a Holmium-YAG laser (wavelength: 2.1 mu, probe diameter: 1.75 mm). Echocardiographic control was performed before the TMLR procedure as well as 5 min and 30 min thereafter. Echocardiographic parameters were recorded in short-axis at the level of the laser channels, and included left ventricular ejection fraction, fractional shortening and segmental wall motility of the channels' area (scale 0-3: 0 = normal, 1 = hypokinesia, 2 = akinesia, 3 = dyskinesia). After sacrifice the lased region was sliced perpendicularly to the channels for histological and morphometrical analysis. Five minutes after the drilling of the channels, all the echocardiographic index worsened significantly in comparison with baseline values (p < 0.01). All recovered after 30 min and showed no difference with baseline values. Cross-section of the channel lesions measured 8.8 +/- 2.4 mm2 which is more than three times that of the probe (p < 0.01). In acute conditions, the lesions due to the TMLR probe are significantly larger than the probe itself and cause a transient drop of the segmental wall motility on a healthy myocardium. These results suggest that TMLR should be used cautiously in the clinical setting for patients with an impaired ventricular function.

There are various methods to collect adverse events (AEs) in clinical trials. The methods how AEs are collected in vaccine trials is of special interest: solicited reporting can lead to over-reporting events that have little or no biological relationship to the vaccine. We assessed the rate of AEs listed in the package insert for the virosomal hepatitis A vaccine Epaxal(®), comparing data collected by solicited or unsolicited self-reporting. In an open, multi-centre post-marketing study, 2675 healthy travellers received single doses of vaccine administered intramuscularly. AEs were recorded based on solicited and unsolicited questioning during a four-day period after vaccination. A total of 2541 questionnaires could be evaluated (95.0% return rate). Solicited self-reporting resulted in significantly higher (p<0.0001) rates of subjects with AEs than unsolicited reporting, both at baseline (18.9% solicited versus 2.1% unsolicited systemic AEs) and following immunization (29.6% versus 19.3% local AEs; 33.8% versus 18.2% systemic AEs). This could indicate that actual reporting rates of AEs with Epaxal(®) may be substantially lower than described in the package insert. The distribution of AEs differed significantly between the applied methods of collecting AEs. The most common AEs listed in the package insert were reported almost exclusively with solicited questioning. The reporting of local AEs was more likely than that of systemic AEs to be influenced by subjects' sex, age and study centre. Women reported higher rates of AEs than men. The results highlight the need for detailing the methods how vaccine tolerability was reported and assessed.

Introduction : Driving is a complex everyday task requiring mechanisms of perception, attention, learning, memory, decision making and action control, thus indicating that involves numerous and varied brain networks. If many data have been accumulated over time about the effects of alcohol consumption on driving capability, much less is known about the role of other psychoactive substances, such as cannabis (Chang et al.2007, Ramaekers et al, 2006). Indeed, the solicited brain areas during safe driving which could be affected by cannabis exposure have not yet been clearly identified. Our aim is to study these brain regions during a tracking task related to driving skills and to evaluate the modulation due to the tolerance of cannabis effects. Methods : Eight non-smoker control subjects participated to an fMRI experiment based on a visuo-motor tracking task, alternating active tracking blocks with passive tracking viewing and rest condition. Half of the active tracking conditions included randomly presented traffic lights as distractors. Subjects were asked to track with a joystick with their right hand and to press a button with their left index at each appearance of a distractor. Four smoking subjects participated to the same fMRI sessions once before and once after smoking cannabis and a placebo in two independent cross-over experiments. We quantified the performance of the subjects by measuring the precision of the behavioural responses (i.e. percentage of time of correct tracking and reaction times to distractors). Functional MRI data were acquired using on a 3.0T Siemens Trio system equipped with a 32-channel head coil. BOLD signals will be obtained with a gradient-echo EPI sequence (TR=2s, TE=30ms, FoV=216mm, FA=90°, matrix size 72×72, 32 slices, thickness 3mm). Preprocessing, single subject analysis and group statistics were conducted on SPM8b. Results were thresholded at p<0.05 (FWE corrected) and at k>30 for spatial extent. Results : Behavioural results showed a significant impairment in task and cognitive test performance of the subjects after cannabis inhalation when comparing their tracking accuracy either to the controls subjects or to their performances before the inhalation or after the placebo inhalation (p<0.001 corrected). In controls, fMRI BOLD analysis of the active tracking condition compared to the passive one revealed networks of polymodal areas in superior frontal and parietal cortex dealing with attention and visuo-spatial coordination. In accordance to what is known of the visual and sensory motor networks we found activations in V4, frontal eye-field, right middle frontal gyrus, intra-parietal sulcus, temporo-parietal junction, premotor and sensory-motor cortex. The presence of distractors added a significant activation in the precuneus. Preliminary results on cannabis smokers in the acute phase, compared either to themselves before the cannabis inhalation or to control subjects, showed a decreased activation in large portions of the frontal and parietal attention network during the simple tracking task, but greater involvement of precuneus, of the superior part of intraparietal sulcus and middle frontal gyrus bilaterally when distractors were present in the task. Conclusions : Our preliminary results suggest that acute cannabis smoking alters performances and brain activity during active tracking tasks, partly reorganizing the recruitment of brain areas of the attention network.

L’informe que es presenta en aquest llibre és el resultat d’un nou acord de col·laboració entre el Programa de les Nacions Unides per als Assentaments Humans (ONU-Habitat) i l’Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya, impulsat amb l’objectiu de millorar la seguretat en esdeveniments públics en els espais urbans a l’Àfrica. La fase pilot es va dur a terme el 2010, durant els dos seminaris de formació realitzats a Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona) com a part de la Plataforma Policia per al Desenvolupament Urbà (PPUD). En aquest informe es descriuen els orígens i l’estat de la iniciativa i resumeix els resultats. També s’inclouen algunes recomanacions per a millorar la seguretat d’esdeveniments públics. AIM: To assess compliance with a drug regimen of two doses a day compared with one a day. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective crossover study was set up in a general practice environment to compare compliance on a drug regimen of once a day versus twice a day. Data were collected by electronic monitoring in 113 patients with hypertension or angina pectoris. All patients were prescribed slow-release nifedipine twice a day during the first month and then crossed to a single daily dose of amlodipine for another month. RESULTS: Compliance, defined as the proportion of days on which the correct dose was taken, improved in 30% of patients (95% confidence interval 19-41%; P < 0.001) when the patients were switched from twice a day to once a day, but at the same time there was a 15% increase (95% confidence interval 5-25%; P < 0.02) in the number of patients with one or more no-dose days. Approximately 8% of patients displayed low compliance, irrespective of the dose regimen. Actual dose intervals were used to estimate the extent and timing of periods with unsatisfactory drug activity for various hypothetical drug durations of action. CONCLUSIONS: The apparent advantage of a single daily dose in terms of compliance appears to be clinically meaningful only when the duration of activity extends beyond the dose interval in all patients.

The use of observer-rated scales requires that raters be trained until they have become reliable in using the scales. However, few studies properly report how training in using a given rating scale is conducted or indeed how it should be conducted. This study examined progress in interrater reliability over 6 months of training with two observer-rated scales, the Cognitive Errors Rating Scale and the Coping Action Patterns Rating Scale. The evolution of the intraclass correlation coefficients was modeled using hierarchical linear modeling. Results showed an overall training effect as well as effects of the basic training phase and of the rater calibration phase, the latter being smaller than the former. The results are discussed in terms of implications for rater training in psychotherapy research.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have indicated that efficient feature search (FS) and inefficient conjunction search (CS) activate partially distinct frontoparietal cortical networks. However, it remains a matter of debate whether the differences in these networks reflect differences in the early processing during FS and CS. In addition, the relationship between the differences in the networks and spatial shifts of attention also remains unknown. We examined these issues by applying a spatio-temporal analysis method to high-resolution visual event-related potentials (ERPs) and investigated how spatio-temporal activation patterns differ for FS and CS tasks. Within the first 450 msec after stimulus onset, scalp potential distributions (ERP maps) revealed 7 different electric field configurations for each search task. Configuration changes occurred simultaneously in the two tasks, suggesting that contributing processes were not significantly delayed in one task compared to the other. Despite this high spatial and temporal correlation, two ERP maps (120-190 and 250-300 msec) differed between the FS and CS. Lateralized distributions were observed only in the ERP map at 250-300 msec for the FS. This distribution corresponds to that previously described as the N2pc component (a negativity in the time range of the N2 complex over posterior electrodes of the hemisphere contralateral to the target hemifield), which has been associated with the focusing of attention onto potential target items in the search display. Thus, our results indicate that the cortical networks involved in feature and conjunction searching partially differ as early as 120 msec after stimulus onset and that the differences between the networks employed during the early stages of FS and CS are not necessarily caused by spatial attention shifts.
