College students generated autobiographical memories from distinct emotional categories that varied in valence (positive vs. negative) and intensity (high vs. low). They then rated various perceptual, cognitive, and emotional properties for each memory. The distribution of these emotional memories favored a vector model over a circumplex model. For memories of all specific emotions, intensity accounted for significantly more variance in autobiographical memory characteristics than did valence or age of the memory. In two additional experiments, we examined multiple memories of emotions of high intensity and positive or negative valence and of positive valence and high or low intensity. Intensity was a more consistent predictor of autobiographical memory properties than was valence or the age of the memory in these experiments as well. The general effects of emotion on autobiographical memory properties are due primarily to intensity differences in emotional experience, not to benefits or detriments associated with a specific valence.

Nowadays, the idea of a reciprocal influence of physiological and psychological processes seems to be widely accepted. For instance, current theories of embodied emotion suggest that knowledge about an emotion concept involves simulations of bodily experienced emotional states relevant to the concept. In line with this framework, the present study investigated whether actual levels of physiological arousal interact with the processing of emotional words. Participants performed 2 blocks of an attentional blink task, once after a cycling session (increased arousal) and once after a relaxation session (reduced arousal). Concretely, participants were instructed to detect and report 2 target words (T1 and T2) presented among a series of nonword distractors. T1 and T2 were either neutral, high arousal, or low arousal words. Results revealed that increased physiological arousal led to improved reports of high arousal T2 words, whereas reduced physiological arousal led to improved reports of low arousal T2 words. Neutral T2 remained unaffected by the arousing conditions. These findings emphasize that actual levels of physiological arousal modulate the cognitive access to arousal (in-)congruent emotional concepts and suggest a direct grounding of emotion knowledge in our bodily systems of arousal.

In this paper we consider the problems of object restoration and image extrapolation, according to the regularization theory of improperly posed problems. In order to take into account the stochastic nature of the noise and to introduce the main concepts of information theory, great attention is devoted to the probabilistic methods of regularization. The kind of the restored continuity is investigated in detail; in particular we prove that, while the image extrapolation presents a Hölder type stability, the object restoration has only a logarithmic continuity. © 1979 American Institute of Physics.

For pt.I. see ibid. vol.1, p.301 (1985). In the first part of this work a general definition of an inverse problem with discrete data has been given and an analysis in terms of singular systems has been performed. The problem of the numerical stability of the solution, which in that paper was only briefly discussed, is the main topic of this second part. When the condition number of the problem is too large, a small error on the data can produce an extremely large error on the generalised solution, which therefore has no physical meaning. The authors review most of the methods which have been developed for overcoming this difficulty, including numerical filtering, Tikhonov regularisation, iterative methods, the Backus-Gilbert method and so on. Regularisation methods for the stable approximation of generalised solutions obtained through minimisation of suitable seminorms (C-generalised solutions), such as the method of Phillips (1962), are also considered.

We find a simple analytic expression for the inverse of an infinite matrix related to the problem of data reduction in confocal scanning microscopy and other band-limited signal processing problems. Potential applications of this result to practical problems are outlined. The matrix arises from a sampling expansion approach to the integral equation.

Inverse diffraction consists in determining the field distribution on a boundary surface from the knowledge of the distribution on a surface situated within the domain where the wave propagates. This problem is a good example for illustrating the use of least-squares methods (also called regularization methods) for solving linear ill-posed inverse problem. We focus on obtaining error bounds For regularized solutions and show that the stability of the restored field far from the boundary surface is quite satisfactory: the error is proportional to ∊(ðŗ‚ ≃ 1) ,ðŗœ being the error in the data (Hölder continuity). However, the error in the restored field on the boundary surface is only proportional to an inverse power of │In∊│ (logarithmic continuity). Such a poor continuity implies some limitations on the resolution which is achievable in practice. In this case, the resolution limit is seen to be about half of the wavelength. In this paper we present different ways used by Secondary students to generalize when they try to solve problems involving sequences. 359 Spanish students solved generalization problems in a written test. These problems were posed through particular terms expressed in different representations. We present examples that illustrate different ways of achieving various types of generalization and how students express generalization. We identify graphical representation of generalization as a useful tool of getting other ways of expressing generalization, and we analyze its connection with other ways of expressing it.
