In this work SiOxNy films are produced and characterized. Series of samples were deposited by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique at low temperatures from silane (SiH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and helium (He) precursor gaseous mixtures, at different deposition power in order to analyze the effect of this parameter on the films structural properties, on the SiOxNy/Si interface quality and on the SiOxNy effective charge density. In order to compare the film structural properties with the interface (SiOxNy/Si) quality and effective charge density, MOS capacitors were fabricated using these films as dielectric layer. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), at the Si-K edge, was utilized to investigate the structure of the films and the material bonding characteristics were analyzed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The MOS capacitors were characterized by low and high frequency capacitance (C-V) measurements, in order to obtain the interface state density (D-it) and the effective charge density (N-ss). An effective charge density linear reduction for decreasing deposition power was observed, result that is attributed to the smaller amount of ions present in the plasma for low RF power. In this work a new method for crosslinking ultra-thin films with potential applications in sensor systems is proposed. The films were produced by layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using a conducting polymer, poly(o-ethoxyaniline) (POEA), alternated with a thermosetting resin, novolac-type phenolformaldehyde (PF), crosslinked by a simple thermal treatment. The PF resin served as both alternating and crosslinking agents. The films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), desorption, doping/dedoping cycling and electrical measurements. The results showed that film architecture and crosslinking degree can be controlled by the conditions used for film deposition (number of bilayers, polymer concentration, pH, and deposition time), and crosslinking time. Moreover, this approach offers several advantages such as fast curing time and low cost, indicating that these films can be used to produce sensors with improved stability.

This work summarizes some results about static state feedback linearization for time-varying systems. Three different necessary and sufficient conditions are stated in this paper. The first condition is the one by [Sluis, W. M. (1993). A necessary condition for dynamic feedback linearization. Systems & Control Letters, 21, 277-283]. The second and the third are the generalizations of known results due respectively to [Aranda-Bricaire, E., Moog, C. H., Pomet, J. B. (1995). A linear algebraic framework for dynamic feedback linearization. IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 40, 127-132] and to [Jakubczyk, B., Respondek, W. (1980). On linearization of control systems. Bulletin del` Academie Polonaise des Sciences. Serie des Sciences Mathematiques, 28, 517-522]. The proofs of the second and third conditions are established by showing the equivalence between these three conditions. The results are re-stated in the infinite dimensional geometric approach of [Fliess, M., Levine J., Martin, P., Rouchon, P. (1999). A Lie-Backlund approach to equivalence and flatness of nonlinear systems. IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, 44(5), 922-937]. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Sucrose was used to prepare montmorillonite/carbon nanocomposites by calcination in a reduced atmosphere. The aim was to investigate the changes derived from varying the clay and sucrose content in the resulting material and to change the adsorption properties to evaluate its potential to be used in catalytic applications. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of an intercalated nanostructure composed of carbon-filled clay mineral layers, which was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetry curves. Differences in composition and texture surface were detected by scanning electron microscopy images and were supported by viscosity measurements. These measurements were helpful in understanding why the sample prepared with the highest sucrose content presented the lowest gasoline and methylene blue adsorption results and why the highest adsorption properties were attributed to the sample with the highest clay content. Moreover, BET and BJH studies allowed understanding oleic acid catalytic conversion. Finally, a water flux simulation test was performed to determine the mechanical resistance in comparison to an activated carbon. It was found that the nanocomposites were more resistant, supporting their use in catalytic applications for a longer period of time. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Titanium oxide (TiO(2)) has been extensively applied in the medical area due to its proved biocompatibility with human cells [1]. This work presents the characterization of titanium oxide thin films as a potential dielectric to be applied in ion sensitive field-effect transistors. The films were obtained by rapid thermal oxidation and annealing (at 300, 600, 960 and 1200 degrees C) of thin titanium films of different thicknesses (5 nm, 10 nm and 20 nm) deposited by e-beam evaporation on silicon wafers. These films were analyzed as-deposited and after annealing in forming gas for 25 min by Ellipsometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy (RAMAN), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Ti-K edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES). Thin film thickness, roughness, surface grain sizes, refractive indexes and oxygen concentration depend on the oxidation and annealing temperature. Structural characterization showed mainly presence of the crystalline rutile phase, however, other oxides such Ti(2)O(3), an interfacial SiO(2) layer between the dielectric and the substrate and the anatase crystalline phase of TiO(2) films were also identified. Electrical characteristics were obtained by means of I-V and C-V measured curves of Al/Si/TiO(x)/Al capacitors. These curves showed that the films had high dielectric constants between 12 and 33, interface charge density of about 10(10)/cm(2) and leakage current density between 1 and 10(-4) A/cm(2). Field-effect transistors were fabricated in order to analyze I(D) x V(DS) and log I(D) x Bias curves. Early voltage value of -1629 V, R(OUT) value of 215 M Omega and slope of 100 mV/dec were determined for the 20 nm TiO(x) film thermally treated at 960 degrees C. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The thermodynamic assessment of an Al(2)O(3)-MnO pseudo-binary system has been carried out with the use of an ionic model. The use of the electro-neutrality principles in addition to the constitutive relations, between site fractions of the species on each sub-lattice, the thermodynamics descriptions of each solid phase has been determined to make possible the solubility description. Based on the thermodynamics descriptions of each phase in addition to thermo-chemical data obtained from the literature, the Gibbs energy functions were optimized for each phase of the Al(2)O(3)-MnO system with the support of PARROT(R) module from ThemoCalc(R) package. A thermodynamic database was obtained, in agreement with the thermo-chemical data extracted from the literature, to describe the Al(2)O(3)-MnO system including the solubility description of solid phases. This work describes the preparation and characterization of biogenic modified silica from rice hull ash and its use as a sorbent of cadmium ions. Thus, an agro-industrial residue has been used to produce a new adsorbent product which is able to remove toxic elements. Mesoporous biogenic silica was obtained by alkaline extraction of sodium silicate by hydrolysis with the sol-gel process, and it was modified with salen using 1,2-dichloroethane as a spacer. The surface area of the silica was measured by nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis. Surface modification was measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The degree of functionalization was obtained by elemental analysis. This work showed that biogenic modified silica can be produced in aqueous media from rice hull ash using a simple method, providing an alternative method for adsorbent preparation. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the salen-modified silica is stable up to 209 C. The modified silica displays appropriate structural characteristics for an adsorbent. The cylindrical pores, open at both ends, allow free diffusion of cadmium ions to the adsorption sites on the silica surface. The surface modification increases cadmium adsorption on the silica surface 100-fold. The salen-modified silica showed specific adsorption for Cd2+ of 44.52 mg/g SiO2 at cadmium concentration of 100 mg/l.

The well-known modified Garabedian-Mcfadden (MGM) method is an attractive alternative for aerodynamic inverse design, for its simplicity and effectiveness (P. Garabedian and G. Mcfadden, Design of supercritical swept wings, AIAA J. 20(3) (1982), 289-291; J.B. Malone, J. Vadyak, and L.N. Sankar, Inverse aerodynamic design method for aircraft components, J. Aircraft 24(2) (1987), 8-9; Santos, A hybrid optimization method for aerodynamic design of lifting surfaces, PhD Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 1993). Owing to these characteristics, the method has been the subject of several authors over the years (G.S. Dulikravich and D.P. Baker, Aerodynamic shape inverse design using a Fourier series method, in AIAA paper 99-0185, AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, Reno, NV, January 1999; D.H. Silva and L.N. Sankar, An inverse method for the design of transonic wings, in 1992 Aerospace Design Conference, No. 92-1025 in proceedings, AIAA, Irvine, CA, February 1992, 1-11; W. Bartelheimer, An Improved Integral Equation Method for the Design of Transonic Airfoils and Wings, AIAA Inc., 1995). More recently, a hybrid formulation and a multi-point algorithm were developed on the basis of the original MGM. This article discusses applications of those latest developments for airfoil and wing design. The test cases focus on wing-body aerodynamic interference and shock wave removal applications. The DLR-F6 geometry is picked as the baseline for the analysis.

An important topic in genomic sequence analysis is the identification of protein coding regions. In this context, several coding DNA model-independent methods based on the occurrence of specific patterns of nucleotides at coding regions have been proposed. Nonetheless, these methods have not been completely suitable due to their dependence on an empirically predefined window length required for a local analysis of a DNA region. We introduce a method based on a modified Gabor-wavelet transform (MGWT) for the identification of protein coding regions. This novel transform is tuned to analyze periodic signal components and presents the advantage of being independent of the window length. We compared the performance of the MGWT with other methods by using eukaryote data sets. The results show that MGWT outperforms all assessed model-independent methods with respect to identification accuracy. These results indicate that the source of at least part of the identification errors produced by the previous methods is the fixed working scale. The new method not only avoids this source of errors but also makes a tool available for detailed exploration of the nucleotide occurrence.

Joint generalized linear models and double generalized linear models (DGLMs) were designed to model outcomes for which the variability can be explained using factors and/or covariates. When such factors operate, the usual normal regression models, which inherently exhibit constant variance, will under-represent variation in the data and hence may lead to erroneous inferences. For count and proportion data, such noise factors can generate a so-called overdispersion effect, and the use of binomial and Poisson models underestimates the variability and, consequently, incorrectly indicate significant effects. In this manuscript, we propose a DGLM from a Bayesian perspective, focusing on the case of proportion data, where the overdispersion can be modeled using a random effect that depends on some noise factors. The posterior joint density function was sampled using Monte Carlo Markov Chain algorithms, allowing inferences over the model parameters. An application to a data set on apple tissue culture is presented, for which it is shown that the Bayesian approach is quite feasible, even when limited prior information is available, thereby generating valuable insight for the researcher about its experimental results.

The responses of the ant community to environmental change, from forest fragment to agroecosystems (coffee or pasture) were evaluated in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this paper we analized the interactions between forest and the two most typical agroecosystem from southest Brazil: sun-growing coffee plantation and introduced pasture. We sampled the ant community from five of each agroecosystems, inside the adjacent forest fragment, and on the edge between them. In each site we removed the litter from fifteen 1m(2) plots and extracted the ants using a Winkler extractor. A total of 165 ant species, distributed in 48 genera and 10 subfamilies were recorded. The coffee plantation presented the lowest abundance and estimated species richness. The causes of the changes observed among the areas are discussed.

PEGylation is a strategy that has been used to improve the biochemical properties of proteins and their physical and thermal stabilities. In this study, hen egg-white lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17; LZ) was modified with methoxypolyethylene glycol-p-nitrophenyl carbonate (mPEG-pNP, MW 5000). This PEGylation of LZ produced conjugates that retained full enzyme activity with glycol chitosan, independent of degree of enzyme modification; its biological activity with the substrate Micrococcus lysodeikticus was altered according to its degree of modification. The conjugate obtained with a low degree of mPEG-pNP/NH(2) modification was studied by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF), demonstrating a spectral peak at m/z 19,988 Da with 77% of its original enzymatic activity. Spectroscopic studies of Fourier transform infrared (FIR) and circular dichroism (CD) did not show any relevant differences in protein structure between the native and conjugate LZ. Studies of the effects of pH and temperature on PEGylated LZ indicated that the conjugate was active over a broad pH range, stable at 50 degrees C, and demonstrated resistance to proteolytic degradation. A theoretical analysis is presented to investigate fully developed (both thermally and hydrodynamically) forced convection in a duct of rectangular cross-section filled with a hyper-porous medium. The Darcy-Brinkman model for flow through porous media was adopted in the present analysis. A Fourier series type solution is applied to obtain the exact velocity and temperature distribution within the duct. The case of uniform heat flux on the walls, i.e. the H boundary condition in the terminology of Kays and Crawford [1], is treated. Values of the Nusselt number and the friction factor as a function of the aspect ratio, the Darcy number, and the viscosity ratio are reported.

This paper presents the recent finding by Muhlhaus et al [1] that bifurcation of crack growth patterns exists for arrays of two-dimensional cracks. This bifurcation is a result of the nonlinear effect due to crack interaction, which is, in the present analysis, approximated by the dipole asymptotic or pseudo-traction method. The nonlinear parameter for the problem is the crack length/ spacing ratio lambda = a/h. For parallel and edge crack arrays under far field tension, uniform crack growth patterns (all cracks having same size) yield to nonuniform crack growth patterns (i.e. bifurcation) if lambda is larger than a critical value lambda(cr) (note that such bifurcation is not found for collinear crack arrays). For parallel and edge crack arrays respectively, the value of lambda(cr) decreases monotonically from (2/9)(1/2) and (2/15.096)(1/2) for arrays of 2 cracks, to (2/3)(1/2)/pi and (2/5.032)(1/2)/pi for infinite arrays of cracks. The critical parameter lambda(cr) is calculated numerically for arrays of up to 100 cracks, whilst discrete Fourier transform is used to obtain the exact solution of lambda(cr) for infinite crack arrays. For geomaterials, bifurcation can also occurs when array of sliding cracks are under compression.

Extracellular polysaccharides from three Erythroclonium spp. were shown, by a combination of compositional, linkage analyses, and Fourier transform infrared and C-13-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, to be highly substituted carrageenans with at least five types of repeating disaccharide units. These are the carrabiose 2,4'-disulfate of iota-carrageenan, carrabiose 2-sulfate of alpha-carrageenan, the 6'-O-methylated counterparts of each of these repeating units, and 4',6'-O-(1-carboxyethylidene)carrabiose 2-sulfate. The polysaccharides also contain significant amounts of unsubstituted, 4-linked galactopyranose and small amounts of 4-linked 3-O-methylgalactopyranose and terminal glycosyl residues. The carrageenan preparations of the three species are similar, differing only in the proportions of some components. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
