The objectives of this study was the physical, chemical, and physiological characterization of marolo (Annona crassiflora, Mart.) during its development. The fruits were harvested 12 Km off Itumirim, Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, at 20-d intervals from anthesis to fruit maturity. The first fruits were harvested within 60 days. The total development of the fruit took 140 days starting from anthesis. At 140 days after anthesis, the fruit reached its maximum size, with mass of 1.380g, transverse diameter of 13.0 cm, and longitudinal diameter of 11.5 cm. During its development, the fruit showed increase in mass and in traverse and longitudinal diameters. The changes during maturation and ripening, such as: pH reduction and starch degradation, pectic solubilization, and increase in total sugars, soluble solids (ºB), respiratory rate (CO2), titratable acidity, vitamin C, and β-caroteno were observed from the 120th day of marolo development. A decrease in ability to sequester free radicals was observed up the 120th day, followed by an increase. The volatile compounds identified at the end of the development included the esters group only.

Abstract In the postharvest stage, taste and flavor are the key components of the marketability of tomato. Therefore, greater emphasis is now being placed on improving traits such as sugar content. In this study postharvest ultraviolet-B (UV-B) treatments on sugar, total soluble solids, and color of tomatoes harvested at different stages were investigated. Tomatoes harvested at turning, pink, and red stages were treated with two different doses of UV-B irradiation: UVB4 and UVB8. Color L* and hue angle values of tomatoes treated with UV-B were found to be high, which means the red color of tomatoes was improved. UVB4 treatments increased the color a* and saturation index values of tomatoes at pink and red harvest stage, although it did not affect at the turning stage. Additionally, UV-B irradiation treatments had no effect on sucrose content of the tomatoes. Fructose, glucose, and TSS content of tomatoes treated with UVB8 at red harvest stage were found to be high. Hence, the results obtained from this study are of great importance in terms of providing an increase in the amount of sugar without the need for breeding, and also consumer satisfaction.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. CKD has been recognized as a significant public health problem and CKD patients are at increased risk of total and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. There are increasing epidemiological data suggesting that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in overall morbidity and mortality associated with CKD. The vitamin D hormonal system is classically implicated in the regulation of calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism but there is ample evidence to support the claim that extra renal conversion of 25(OH)D to 1.25(OH)2 has significant biological roles beyond those traditionally ascribed to vitamin D. Based on the current state of evidence this review intends to give an update on novel biological and clinical insights with relevance to the steroid hormone vitamin D specifically in patients with kidney disease.

Arabic cookery book, dated tentatively to 12th or 13th century by the editors (Öhrnberg & Mroueh) on the basis of the script. Aro suggests (grounds not made explicit) that the manuscript came to the library from the collections of G. A. Wallin, but Öhrnberg & Mroueh simply describe it as being of unknown provenance.

Phosphoserine aminotrasferase (PSAT: EC 2.6.1.52) is a vitamin B6-dependent enzyme and a member of the subgroup IV in the aminotransferase superfamily. Here, X-ray crystallography was used to determine the structure of PSAT from Bacillus alcalophilus with pyridoxamine 5′-phosphate (PMP) at high resolution (1.57 Å). In addition, analysis of active residues and their conformational changes was performed. The structure is of good quality as indicated, for example, by the last recorded Rwork and Rfree numbers (0.1331 and 0.1495, respectively). The enzyme was initially crystallized in the presence of substrate L-glutamate with the idea to produce the enzyme-substrate complex. However, the structure determination revealed no glutamate bound at the active site. Instead, the Schiff base between Lys196 and PLP appeared broken, resulting in the formation of PMP owing to the excess of the donor substrate used during co-crystallization. Structural comparison with the free PSAT enzyme and the PSAR-PSER complex showed that the aromatic ring of the co-factor remains in almost the same place in all structures. A flexible nearby loop in the active site was found in the same position as in the free PSAT structure while in the PSAT-PSER structure it moves inwards to interact with PSER. B-factors comparison in all three structures (PSAT-PMP complex, free PSAT, and PSAT-PSER complex) showed elevated loop flexibility in the absence of the substrate, indicating that loop flexibility plays an important role during substrate binding. The reported structure provides mechanistic details into the reaction mechanism of PSAT and may help in understanding better the role of various parts in the structure towards the design of novel compounds as potential disruptors of PSAT function. This may lead to the development of new drugs which could target the human and bacterial PSAT active site.
