The La2NiCoO5 and LaSrCo2O5 phases have been synthesized by the temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) of the parent mixed perovskites LaNi0.5Co0.5O3 and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3, respectively, under an ammonia atmosphere. While La2NiCoO5 adopts a structure similar to the vacancy-ordered La2Ni2O5, LaSrCo2O5 crystallized in a brownmillerite-like structure. The reactivity of the perovskite oxides towards reduction by ammonia and the structure of the product oxides are found to be guided by factors such as the coordination and oxidation state of the transition-metal cations.

The antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure for the 3.5 copy Oxytricha telomeric sequence d(G(4)T(4))(3)G4 has been established using a combination of spectroscopic and chemical probing methods. In the presence of Naf ions, this sequence exhibits a circular dichroism spectrum with a positive band at 295 nm and a negative band around 265 nm, characteristic of an antiparallel G quartet structure. Further, we show that d(G(4)T(4))(3)G(4) adopts an antiparallel intramolecular G quartet structure even in K+ unlike d(G(4)T(4)G(4)). KMnO4 probing experiments indicated the existence of intra and interloop interactions in the Na+ induced structure. We have found that K+ not only increases the thermal stability of,G quartet structure but also binds to the loop region and disrupts stacking and interloop interactions. Biological consequences of such cation-dependent conformational micro-heterogeneity in the loop region of G quartet structures is also discussed.

alpha,beta-Dehydrophenylalanine residues constrain the peptide backbone to beta-bend conformation. A pentapeptide containing four consecutive (Delta Phe) residues has been synthesised and crystallised. The peptide Boc-LAla-Delta Phe-Delta Phe-Delta Phe-Delta Phe-NHMe (C45H46N6O7, MW = 782.86) was crystallised from an acetonitrile/methanol mixture. The crystal belongs to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) With a = 19.455(6), b = 20.912(9), c = 11.455(4) Angstrom and Z = 4. The X-ray (MoKalpha, lambda = 0.7107 Angstrom) intensity data were collected using the Rigaku-AFC7 diffractrometer. The crystal structure was determined by direct methods and refined using the least-squares technique, R = 8.41% for 1827 reflections with \F-o\ > 4 sigma\F-o\. The molecule contains the largest stretch of consecutive dehydrophenylalanine residues whose crystal structure has been determined so far. The peptide adopts left-handed 3(10)-helical conformation despite the presence of LAla at the N-terminus. The mean phi, psi values, averaged across the last four residues are 56.8 degrees and 17.5 degrees, respectively. There are four 4-->1 intramolecular hydrogen bonds, characteristic of the 3(10)-helix. In the crystal each molecule interacts with four crystallographically symmetric molecules with one hydrogen bond each.

The complete amino acid sequence of a cytotoxin-like basic protein (CLBP) from the venom of Naja naja naja (Indian Cobra) was determined by manual degradation using a 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-isothiocyanate double-coupling method. Peptide fragments obtained by chemical cleavage with cyanogen bromide and enzymic cleavages with trypsin and Staphylococcus aureus proteases for sequence analysis were purified by reversed-phase chromatography. The total number of amino acid residues was 61, with leucine as the C-terminal residue. (C) Munksgaard 1995.

An N-alpha-protected model pentapeptide containing two consecutive Delta Phe residues, Boc-Leu-Delta Phe-Delta Phe-Ala-Phe-NHMe, has been synthesized by solution methods and fully characterized. H-1-nmr studies provided evidence for the occurrence of a significant population of a conformer having three consecutive, intramolecularly II-bonded beta-bends in solution. The solid state structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction methods. The crystals grown from aqueous methanol are orthorhombic, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1),, a = 11.503(2), b = 16.554(2), c = 22.107(3) Angstrom, V = 4209(1) Angstrom,(3) and Z = 4. The x-ray data were collected on a CAD4 diffractometer using CuKalpha radiation (lambda = 1.5418 Angstrom). The structure was determined using direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares procedure. The R factor is 5.3%. The molecule is characterized by a right handed 3(10)-helical conformation ((phi) = -68.2 degrees (psi) = -26.3 degrees), which is made up of two consecutive type III beta-bends and one type I beta-bend. In the solid state the helical molecules are aligned head-to-tail, thus forming long rod like structures. A comparison with other peptide structures containing consecutive Delta Phe residues is also provided. The present study confirms that the -Delta Phe-Delta Phe-sequence can be accommodated in helical structures. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The singularity structure of the solutions of a general third-order system, with polynomial right-hand sides of degree less than or equal to two, is studied about a movable singular point, An algorithm for transforming the given third-order system to a third-order Briot-Bouquet system is presented, The dominant behavior of a solution of the given system near a movable singularity is used to construct a transformation that changes the given system directly to a third-order Briot-Bouquet system. The results of Horn for the third-order Briot-Bouquet system are exploited to give the complete form of the series solutions of the given third-order system; convergence of these series in a deleted neighborhood of the singularity is ensured, This algorithm is used to study the singularity structure of the solutions of the Lorenz system, the Rikitake system, the three-wave interaction problem, the Rabinovich system, the Lotka-Volterra system, and the May-Leonard system for different sets of parameter values. The proposed approach goes far beyond the ARS algorithm.

We report on neutron diffraction study of a new form of conducting amorphous carbon up to Q similar to 14.5 Angstrom(-1). The bond distances from first two peaks in g(r) are 1.45 and 2.49 Angstrom, very similar to those in sputtered truly amorphous carbon films (Li and Lannin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 65 (1990) 1905). The first coordination number is 3.1 (+/- 0.1) indicating predominantly sp(2) hybridisation (ideal no. = 3). However, S(Q) itself shows vestiges of (0 0 2), (1 0) and (1 1) peaks, typical of glassy carbon (Mildner, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 47 (1982) 391). (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new oxynitride Ba3W2O6N2 has been synthesised from the ammonolysis of Ba3W2O9. This compound crystallises in a hexagonal structure with a = 5.993(2) and c=21.40(4) Angstrom. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies were carried out to elucidate the structure of this new compound. IR and Raman data are consistent with the C-3v site symmetry of the (WO3N)(3-) unit. This compound is isostructural with Ba3V2O8 reported in the literature.

Treatment of the lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, cis-{EtNP(OR)}(3) [R = C6H4Br-4 (L-1) or C6H4Br-2 (L-2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] (NBD = norbornadiene) yields the mononuclear complexes [Mo(CO)(4)L-1] (1) and [Mo(CO)(4)L-2] (2). which have been characterised by IR, NMR (P-31 and H-1) and FAB mass spectral data. The structure of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and conformational changes brought about by complexation are discussed in terms of a bonding model based on "negative hyperconjugation". (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Triammonium hydrogen disulphate, (NH4)(3)H(SO4)(2), belongs to the family of crystal structures M3H(XO4)(2) (with M = NH4, K, Rb, Cs, and X = S, Se) which display super protonic phases at elevated temperatures, while at room temperature these are relatively poor proton conductors. The crystal structure of triammonium hydrogen disulphate has been determined by X-ray diffraction at -90 degrees C and the variation in the characteristics of the hydrogen bond is discussed in comparison with that of the structures at -110 degrees C and room temperature. It is concluded that the mechanics involving the proton migration in such systems is realised in terms of the variations in the hydrogen bond features with temperature.

Experiments were conducted on the oxygen transfer coefficient, k(L)a(20), through surface aeration in geometrically similar square tanks, with a rotor of diameter D fitted with six flat blades. An optimal geometric similarity of various linear dimensions, which produced maximum k(L)a(20) for any rotational speed of rotor N by an earlier study, was maintained. A simulation equation uniquely correlating k = k(L)a(20)(nu/g(2))(1/3) (nu and g are kinematic viscosity of water and gravitational constant, respectively), and a parameter governing the theoretical power per unit volume, X = (ND2)-D-3/(g(4/3)nu(1/3)), is developed. Such a simulation equation can be used to predict maximum k for any N in any size of such geometrically similar square tanks. An example illustrating the application of results is presented. Also, it has been established that neither the Reynolds criterion nor the Froude criterion is singularly valid to simulate either k or K = k(L)a(20)/N, simultaneously in all the sizes of tanks, even through they are geometrically similar. Occurrence of "scale effects" due to the Reynolds and the Froude laws of similitude on both k and K are also evaluated.

2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9-hexadecafluorodecyl 1,10-ditosylate and its precursors were synthesized and characterized by H-1- and F-19-NMR spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. These compounds are building blocks for the syntheses of the surfactants containing polyperfluoromethylene spacer. The molecule has extended all-trans conformation with molecular symmetry (1) over bar (C-i). There is a reasonably strong C-H ... O interaction in the crystal and there are two F ... The crystal structure of the saccharide-free form of the basic form of winged-bean agglutinin (WBAI) has been solved by the molecular-replacement method and refined at 2.3 Angstrom resolution The final R factor is 19.74b for all data in the resolution range 8.0-2.3 Angstrom. The asymmetric unit contains two half-dimers, each located on a crystallographic twofold axis. The structure of the saccharide-free form is compared with that of the complex of WBAI wi th methyl-alpha-D-galactoside. The complex is composed of two dimers in the asymmetric unit. The intersubunit interactions in the dimer are nearly identical in the two structures The binding site of the saccharide-free structure contains three ordered water molecules at positions similar to those of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate which an hydrogen bonded to the protein. Superposition of the saccharide-binding sites of the two structures shows that the major changes involve expulsion of these ordered water molecules and a shift of about 0.6 Angstrom of the main-chain atoms of the variable loop.
