Titanium dioxide was obtained by hydrolysis of the corresponding ethoxide, followed by washing, drying, and calcination at 80, 160, 240, 320, 400, and 700 C, respectively. The following surface properties of the solids obtained were determined as a function of the calcinations temperature: T(Calcn); area by the BET method; BrOnsted acidity by titration with sodium hydroxide; empirical polarity, ET(30); Lewis acidity, alpha(Surf); Lewis basicity, beta(Surf); and dipolarity/polarizability pi*(Sturf), by use of solvatochromic indicators. Except for le surf whose value increased slightly, heating the samples resulted in a decrease of all of the above-mentioned surface properties, due to the decrease of surface hydroxyl groups. This conclusion has been corroborated by FTIR. Values of E(T)(30), alpha(Surf), and pi*(Surf) are higher than those of water and alcohols; the BrOnsted and Lewis acidities of the samples correlate linearly. The advantages of using solvatochromic indicators to probe the surface properties and relevance of the results to the applications of TiO(2) are discussed.

The synthesis and study of the chemiluminescence parameters and thermal stability of 1,2-dioxetanes containing a spirofenchyl substituent are reported. Three fenchyl-substituted 1,2-dioxetanes were synthesized by photooxygenation of the corresponding alkenes, obtained by Barton-Kellogg olefination of the readily available (-)-fenchone. The fenchyl-substituted 1,2-dioxetanes showed thermal stabilities similar to those of the corresponding spiroadamantyl-substituted derivatives, although being slightly more labile with respect to unimolecular decomposition than the latter derivatives, which are widely utilized as labels in a great variety of chemiluminescent immunoassays. Fluoride induced decomposition of one triggerable fenchyl 1,2-dioxetane derivative showed kinetic parameters similar to those of the corresponding adamantyl-substituted derivative. The chemiluminescence quantum yields in the one percent range are also similar to that of other widely utilized chemiluminescence systems as the luminol reaction. These results indicate that fenchyl-substituted 1,2-dioxetanes can potentially be utilized as a cheaper alternative to substitute the corresponding spiroadamantyl derivatives in bioanalytical applications. Structural and thermodynamic stabilities of monomers and dimers of trialkylphosphine oxides (TRPO) were Studied using quantum chemistry calculations. Density functional theory calculations were carried Out and the structures Of four TRPO have been determined: TMPO (methyl; R = CH(3)), TEPO (ethyl; R = CH(3)CH(2)), TBPO (n-butyl; R = CH(3)(CH(2))(3)), and TOPO (n-octyl; R = CH(3)(CH(2))(7)). TRPO homodimers were investigated considering two isomeric possibilities for each dimer. Relative binding energies and the enthalpic and entropic contributions to the Gibbs free energy were Calculated for all dimers. The formation of dimers from the individual monomeric TRPO species as a function of temperature was also analyzed. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem 109: 250-258, 2009

The surface of ramie cellulose whiskers has been chemically modified by grafting organic acid chlorides presenting different lengths of the aliphatic chain by an esterification reaction. The occurrence of the chemical modification was evaluated by FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, elemental analysis and contact angle measurements. The crystallinity of the particles was not altered by the chain grafting, but it was shown that covalently grafted chains were able to crystallize at the cellulose surface when using C18. Both unmodified and functionalized nanoparticles were extruded with low density polyethylene to prepare nanocomposite materials. The homogeneity of the ensuing nanocomposites was found to increase with the length of the grafted chains. The thermomechanical properties of processed nanocomposites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile tests. A significant improvement in terms of elongation at break was observed when sufficiently long chains were grafted on the surface of the nanoparticles. It was ascribed to improved dispersion of the nanoparticles within the LDPE matrix. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A major concern in solvent extraction processes is the loss of extractant into the aqueous phase due to its slight solubility in the aqueous phase. Similarly, in membrane extraction processes, extractant loss through extractant leakage from the membrane into the aqueous phase is also a concern. Several published membrane extraction studies using Aliquat 336 as the extractant, have expressed this concern, but none has studied extractant leakage quantitatively. It is the authors’ opinion that the extractant leakage should be considered as a technical parameter of a membrane. In our laboratory active progress has been made in using Aliquat 336 ‘entangled’ into the polymer membranes to remove heavy metal ions from wastewater samples. In this work, we studied the loss of Aliquat 336 from the point of view of its solubility in aqueous solutions. The results showed that the solubilities of Aliquat 336 in an aqueous phase acidified with 2 M HCl is about 0.1 g/100 m/ of the solution. This figure provides a useful guideline for evaluating the leakage of the Aliquat 336 extractant from the membranes.

Carbohydrates were extracted from hooded seal milk, Crystophora cristata (family Phocidae). Free oligosaccharides were separated by gel filtration and then purified by ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration and preparative thin layer or paper chromatography and their structures determined by 1H-NMR. The hooded seal milk was found to contain inositol and at least nine oligosaccharides, most of which had lacto-N-neotetraose or lacto-N-neohexaose as core units, similar to those in milk of other species of Carnivora such as bears (Ursidae). Their structures were as follows: Gal(β1-4)Glc (lactose); Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)Glc (2′-fucosyllactose); Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc (lacto-N-neotetraose); Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc (lacto-N-fucopentaose IV); Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)[Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-6)]Gal(1-4)Glc (lacto-N-neohexaose); Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)[Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-6)]Gal(β1-4)Glc (monofucosyl lacto-N-neohexaose a); Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)[Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-6)]Gal(β1-4)Glc (monofucosyl lacto-N-neohexaose b); Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)[Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-6)]Gal(β1-4)Glc (difucosyl lacto-N-neohexaose); Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc (para lacto-N-neohexaose); Fuc(α1-2)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)GlcNAc(β1-3)Gal(β1-4)Glc (monofucosyl para lacto-N-neohexaose). Milk of the Australian fur seal, Arctophalus pusillus doriferus (family Otariidae) contained inositol but no lactose or free oligosaccharides. These results, therefore, support the hypothesis that the milk of otariids, unlike that of phocids, contains no free reducing saccharides.

An extracellular naringinase (an enzyme complex consisting of α-L-rhamnosidase and β-D-glucosidase activity, EC 3.2.1.40) that hydrolyses naringin (a trihydroxy flavonoid) for the production of rhamnose and glucose was purified from the culture filtrate of Aspergillus niger 1344. The enzyme was purified 38-fold by ammonium sulphate precipitation, ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography with an overall recovery of 19% with a specific activity of 867 units per mg of protein. The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was estimated to be about 168 kDa by gel filtration chromatography on a Sephadex G-200 column and the molecular mass of the subunits was estimated to be 85 kDa by sodium dodecyl sulphate-Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The enzyme had an optimum pH of 4.0 and temperature of 50 °C, respectively. The naringinase was stable at 37 °C for 72 h, whereas at 40 °C the enzyme showed 50% inactivation after 96 h of incubation. Hg2+, SDS, p-chloromercuribenzoate, Cu2+ and Mn2+ completely inhibited the enzyme activity at a concentration of 2.5–10 mM, whereas, Ca2+, Co2+ and Mg2+ showed very little inactivation even at high concentrations (10–100 mM). The enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by rhamnose, the end product of naringin hydrolysis. The enzyme activity was accelerated by Mg2+ and remained stable for one year after storage at −20 °C. The purified enzyme preparation successfully hydrolysed naringin and rutin, but not hesperidin.

A novel electrodeposition technique for preparing the catalyst layer in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells has been designed, which may enable an increase in the level of platinum utilisation currently achieved in these systems. This method consists of a two-step procedure involving the impregnation of platinum ions into a preformed catalyst layer (via an ion-exchange into the Nafion polymer electrolyte), followed by a potentiostatic reduction. The concentration of Nafion within the catalyst layer was found to have a significant bearing on the size of the platinum deposits. The preparation of catalyst layers containing a desired platinum loading should also be possible using this method. Surface areas of the platinum deposits were determined using cyclic voltammetry. The prepared catalyst was compared with a conventional electrode made from E-TEK Pt/C. Scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the dispersion of the platinum particles. Platinum loadings were determined quantitatively by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

A significant number of biosorption studies on the removal of heavy metal from aqueous solutions have been conducted worldwide. Nearly all of them have been directed towards optimizing biosorption parameters to obtain the highest removal efficiency while the rest of them are concerned with the biosorption mechanism. Combinations of FTIR, SEM-EDX, TEM as well as classical methods such as titrations are extremely useful in determining the main processes on the surfaces of biosorbents. Diverse functional groups represented by carboxyl, hydroxyl, sulfate and amino groups play significant roles in the biosorption process. Solution pH normally has a large impact on biosorption performance. In brief, ion exchange and complexation can be pointed out as the most prevalent mechanisms for the biosorption of most heavy metals.

This study determines the inhibitory effect of Stevia rebaudiana leaf extracts and its purified bioactive compound ‘stevioside’ against food-related pathogens. The S. rebaudiana solvent extracts (1000 μg/mL) displayed antibacterial activity to Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, B. subtilis, Alcaligenes denitrificans and Salmonella typhimurium. Of the six solvents, ethanol and acetone extracts displayed the highest zone of inhibition. The bioactive compound from S. rebaudiana was purified by solvent extraction, thin-layer chromatography followed by structural characterization by spectroscopy evidence. Purified stevioside prevented the growth of tested bacterial species, i.e. B. subtilis, K. pneumoniae and S. typhimurium. Significant zone of inhibition (12 mm) was observed against B. cereus which proposes potential application of stevioside in foods to increase their shelf life.

Plant seeds, a rich source of proteins, are considered important for their application as functional ingredients in a food system. A novel ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP), balsamin was purified from the seeds of Balsam apple, Momordica balsamina. Balsamin was purified by ion exchange chromatography on CM Sepharose and gel filtration on superdex-75. It has a molecular weight of 28 kDa as shown by SDS-PAGE analysis. Balsamin inhibits protein synthesis in a rabbit reticulocyte lysate-based cell free translation assay with an IC50 of 90.6 ng ml−1. It has RNA N-glycosidase activity and releases a 400-base long fragment termed the Endo fragment from 28S rRNA in the same manner as does saporin-6 from Saponaria officinalis. The N-terminal sequence analysis of the first 12 amino acids of balsamin revealed that it shares 83% similarity with type I RIP α-MMC from Momordica charantia and 50% similarity with β-MMC (from Momordica charantia), bryodin I (from Bryonia dioica) and luffin a (from Luffa cylindrica). Balsamin was further characterized by mass spectrometry. CD spectroscopic studies indicate that secondary structure of balsamin contains helix (23.5%), β-strand (24.6%), turn (20%) and random coil (31.9%). Thus RIPs activity expressed in vegetables like Momordica sp. advocates its usage in diet.

An extracellular tannase (E.C. 3.1.1.20) producing fungal strain was isolated from soil and identified as Aspergillus sp MIK23. Out of various plant extracts, Terminalia chebula powder (TCP) in the optimized medium enhanced enzyme production. Maximum yield of tannase (3 IU ml-1) was obtained with glucose (10 g/L), urea (2 g/L), and yeast extract (2.5 g/L) when inoculated with 10% inoculum in 48 h. An initial medium at pH 6.0 and a cultivation temperature of 37 0C was found to be optimum for enzyme production. Metal ions Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ did not improve enzyme activity, whereas, Ca2+, Fe2+ and Hg2+ repressed enzyme activity. The enzyme was purified using ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by Q-sepharose ion-exchange chromatography. The enzyme was purified to 42-fold with an overall recovery of 20. The pH and temperature optima of the purified tannase were found to be 7.0 and 37°C, respectively.

High-pressure ion exchange of small-pore zeolite K-natrolite allows immobilization of nominally non-exchangeable aliovalent cations such as trivalent europium. A sample exchanged at 3.0(1) GPa and 250 °C contains about 4.7 EuIII ions per unit cell, which is equivalent to over 90 % of the K+ cations being exchanged.

CrN films on a bipolar plate in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells have several advantages owing to their excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Three CrN samples deposited at various radio frequency (RF) powers by RF magnetron sputtering were evaluated under potentiodynamic, potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy conditions. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data were monitored for 168 h in a corrosive environment at 70 °C to determine the coating performance at +600 mVSCE under simulated cathodic conditions in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The electrochemical behavior of the coatings increased with decreasing RF power. CrN films on the AISI 316 stainless steel substrate showed high protective efficiency and charge transfer resistance, i.e. increasing corrosion resistance with decreasing RF power. X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of a CrN(200) preferred orientation at low RF power.

We report a novel route to prepare multiresponsive organogels through charge-driven assembly between a block ionomer and a diblock copolymer. The ionic complex aggregates to form spherical cores, which are connected by the middle block of the block ionomer to form gels. The organogels are responsive to acids, amines and salts.
