A linear algebra approach to OLAP

Inspired by the relational algebra of data processing, this paper addresses the foundations of data analytical processing from a linear algebra perspective. The paper investigates, in particular, how aggregation operations such as cross tabulations and data cubes essential to quantitative analysis of data can be expressed solely in terms of matrix multiplication, transposition and the Khatri–Rao variant of the Kronecker product. The approach offers a basis for deriving an algebraic theory of data consolidation, handling the quantitative as well as qualitative sides of data science in a natural, elegant and typed way. It also shows potential for parallel analytical processing, as the parallelization theory of such matrix operations is well acknowledged.

Feature Nets: behavioural modelling of software product lines

Software product lines (SPL) are diverse systems that are developed using a dual engineering process: (a)family engineering defines the commonality and variability among all members of the SPL, and (b) application engineering derives specific products based on the common foundation combined with a variable selection of features. The number of derivable products in an SPL can thus be exponential in the number of features. This inherent complexity poses two main challenges when it comes to modelling: Firstly, the formalism used for modelling SPLs needs to be modular and scalable. Secondly, it should ensure that all products behave correctly by providing the ability to analyse and verify complex models efficiently. In this paper we propose to integrate an established modelling formalism (Petri nets) with the domain of software product line engineering. To this end we extend Petri nets to Feature Nets. While Petri nets provide a framework for formally modelling and verifying single software systems, Feature Nets offer the same sort of benefits for software product lines. We show how SPLs can be modelled in an incremental, modular fashion using Feature Nets, provide a Feature Nets variant that supports modelling dynamic SPLs, and propose an analysis method for SPL modelled as Feature Nets. By facilitating the construction of a single model that includes the various behaviours exhibited by the products in an SPL, we make a significant step towards efficient and practical quality assurance methods for software product lines.

Late Clinical Outcomes of the Fontan Operation in Patients with Tricuspid Atresia

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the long-term clinical results of the Fontan operation in patients with tricuspid atresia. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made at the Instituto de Cardiologia do Rio Grande do Sul (Institute of Cardiology of Rio Grande do Sul), from August 1980 through January 2000, of 25 patients with a long-term follow-up, out of a series of 36 patients who underwent the Fontan operation or one of its variants due to tricuspid atresia. Their mean age at surgery was 5.4±3.1 years, and their mean weight was 15.8±6.1 kg, the majority of them (63.9%) being males. Four patients underwent the classical Fontan operation, 12 the Kreutzer variant, 6 the Björk variant, 9 total cavopulmonary shunt with a fenestrated tube, and 5 total cavopulmonary shunt with a nonfenestrated tube. RESULTS: The patients were followed-up on an outpatient basis, with a mean long-term survival time of 5.5±4.2 years (50 days to 17.8 years) and a late mortality rate of 8%. Arterial saturation increased from 77.2±18.8% in the preoperative period to 91±6.7% upon the last outpatient visit (p>0.05). At the final check, most (67%) patients were asymptomatic and 87% could tolerate exercise. Ten (40%) patients experienced some kind of complication during the long-term follow-up, such as cardiac arrhythmia, cyanosis, protein-losing enteropathy, neurological events, right heart failure, intolerance to exercise and reoperation. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that, once the immediate postoperative period is over, during which the adaptations to the new circulatory physiology occur, the evolution of patients with tricuspid atresia who underwent the Fontan operation is satisfactory, in spite of a low, yet significant, morbidity.

p.Q192R SNP of PON1 seems not to be Associated with Carotid Atherosclerosis Risk Factors in an Asymptomatic and Normolipidemic Brazilian Population Sample

Background:Evidences suggest that paraoxonase 1 (PON1) confers important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties when associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL).Objective:To investigate the relationships between p.Q192R SNP ofPON1, biochemical parameters and carotid atherosclerosis in an asymptomatic, normolipidemic Brazilian population sample.Methods:We studied 584 volunteers (females n = 326, males n = 258; 19-75 years of age). Total genomic DNA was extracted and SNP was detected in the TaqMan® SNP OpenArray® genotyping platform (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA). Plasma lipoproteins and apolipoproteins were determined and PON1 activity was measured using paraoxon as a substrate. High-resolution β-mode ultrasonography was used to measure cIMT and the presence of carotid atherosclerotic plaques in a subgroup of individuals (n = 317).Results:The presence of p.192Q was associated with a significant increase in PON1 activity (RR = 12.30 (11.38); RQ = 46.96 (22.35); QQ = 85.35 (24.83) μmol/min; p < 0.0001), HDL-C (RR= 45 (37); RQ = 62 (39); QQ = 69 (29) mg/dL; p < 0.001) and apo A-I (RR = 140.76 ± 36.39; RQ = 147.62 ± 36.92; QQ = 147.49 ± 36.65 mg/dL; p = 0.019). Stepwise regression analysis revealed that heterozygous and p.192Q carriers influenced by 58% PON1 activity towards paraoxon. The univariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that p.Q192R SNP was not associated with mean cIMT; as a result, in the multiple regression analysis, no variables were selected with 5% significance. In logistic regression analysis, the studied parameters were not associated with the presence of carotid plaques.Conclusion:In low-risk individuals, the presence of the p.192Q variant ofPON1 is associated with a beneficial plasma lipid profile but not with carotid atherosclerosis.

Storing Data in the Trial of Complex Technical Products

The article considers the ways of organization of databases for the storage of the results obtained during testing. A new variant of the organization of the data to ensure the ability to write to the database different sets of parameters in the form of chronological series. The required set of parameters depends on the modification of the tested technical installation.

Funktionelle Charakterisierung von mtch2 im Zebrafischmodell

Die steigende Zahl von Erkrankungen in Folge von Adipositas ist ein weltweites Gesundheitsproblem unserer Zeit. Genomweite Assoziationsstudien konnten single-nucleotide polymorphisms identifizieren, die in Zusammenhang mit Adipositas stehen könnten, darunter auch MTCH2. Weiterführende Untersuchungen konnten zeigen, dass MTCH2 eine regulatorische Rolle bei der Adipogenese einnimmt. Da mtch2 auch im Zebrafisch in verschiedenen Geweben und Organen wie Leber, Darm und Fettgewebe exprimiert wird, liegt die Vermutung nahe, dass es in diesen Organen und Geweben eine Funktion aufweist. Diese Funktion sollte über einen Morpholino-induzierten Knockdown des Gens und die Analyse des Phänotyps der Morpholino-injizierten Fische näher analysiert werden. Der Knockdown von mtch2 im Zebrafisch wurde mit Hilfe zweier Splice-Morpholinos induziert und über quantitative Real Time PCR identifiziert. Die Auswirkungen des Knockdowns auf die Entwicklung von Leber und Darm der Fische wurde über spezifische Marker mit der Methode der In situ Hybridisierung untersucht. Die Adipozytenbildung wurde durch Nilrotfärbung analysiert und über die Fütterung der Fische mit fluoreszierenden Beads mit dem Essverhalten in Zusammenhang gebracht. Bei beiden Morpholinos führte der Knockdown von mtch2 an Tag 4 der Entwicklung der Morpholino-injizierten Zebrafische zu Auffälligkeiten in der Ausbildung von Leber und Darm der Fische, die aber nicht mit einer generellen Störung der Entwicklung der Tiere einherging. An Tag 8 der Entwicklung der Zebrafische zeigte sich hingegen, dass die Tiere im Gegensatz zu den Kontroll-injizierten Fischen insgesamt kleiner beziehungsweise unterentwickelt waren, wobei dieser Umstand nicht mit ihrem Essverhalten in Zusammenhang gebracht werden konnte. Zudem konnte eine reduzierte Adipozytenbildung in den Morpholino-injizierten Zebrafischen festgestellt werden. (...)

Particularly with regard to the prohibition of previous employment.This thesis presents the interests fo employers and companies. The central research question is: What are the possibilities of limitation and there is the prohibition of previous employment unconstitutional? A special attention is given to the contractual formulation examples of limited contracts. It deals exclusively with applicable German and European law. A comparison with previous case-law does not take place in this master thesis.
