Marion Allan Wright Papers - Accession 197

The Marion Allan Wright Papers consist of correspondence, a journal, autobiographical writings, bibliographies, biographical data, essays, speeches, book reviews, short stories, poems, letters to the editor, oral history transcripts and other papers. Subjects include the death penalty, the civil rights movement, civil liberties, libraries in South Carolina and politics. Correspondents include R. Beverly Herbert, L. Mendel Rivers, J, William Fulbright, Sam Ervin, Jr., Reverend James P. Dees, Preston Wright (Wright's brother) and other relatives. See Acc 48 for an earlier accession of Wright papers and the oral history collection for recorded interviews with Wright.

Rock Hill Fire Department Records - Accession 242 - M102 (131)

The Rock Hill Fire Department Records consist correspondence from W.H. Wylie, for whom Lake Wylie is named, to prominent Rock Hillian Mr. W.T. Roddey and to the Rock Hill Fire Department. Also included is a program book for the 33rd Annual Convention of South Carolina State Firemen’s Association held in Rock Hill in 1928. The program book lists officers of the Association, committee appointments, fire chiefs, in SC, Rock Hill city officials with brief biographical sketches and sketches of the history of SC State Firemen’s Association, city of Rock Hill and Winthrop College.

Fellowship of the Concerned Reports - Accession 40 - M15 (25)

The Fellowship of the Concerned Reports consist of two reports presented before the Fellowship in Atlanta, with one report by Marion Allan Wright describing the civil rights situation in South Carolina and the other by Father Maurice Shean of the Oratory in Rock Hill describing the work of the Rock Hill Council on Human Relations to better race relations in the city. The Fellowship was founded in 1949 and dissolved in 1970. It was an organization of southern women affiliated with the Southern Regional Council and concerned with promoting civil rights.

Dora Dee Walker Papers - Accession 104 - M44 (59)

The Dora Dee Walker Papers consist of biographical sketches and data sheets, a letter, photographs, a newspaper clipping and a copy of the history of extension work in Allendale County, all relating to Dora Walker, pioneering State leader in extension work in South Carolina.

Strom and Jean Crouch Thurmond Scrapbooks - Accession 27

The Strom and Jean Crouch Thurmond Scrapbook collection consists of three scrapbooks containing photocopies of clippings relating to Mr. and Mrs. Thurmond’s family life, as well as the political career of Strom Thurmond. Senator Thurmond’s first wife, Jean Crouch Thurmond was a 1947 graduate of Winthrop College, the South Carolina College for Women.

Thelma Ecord Busbee Papers - Accession 29

Thelma Ecord Busbee (1910-2004) was a Civic leader and club woman from Columbia, South Carolina. The Thelma Ecord Busbee Papers consist of correspondence, reports, constitutions, financial records, program notes, and other papers relating to her many club and civic activities. The collection covers the South Carolina Federation of Women’s Clubs (1950-1959), The South Carolina Status of Women’s Conference (1961-1968), the Richland-Lexington Tuberculosis Association (1961-1964), South Carolina Alert, Inc. (1961-1962), the Palmetto Outdoor Historical Drama Association (1965-1968), the South Carolina State Library Board (1967-1968), the Lexington County Hospital Auxiliary (1970-1972), and the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1966).

Boulware Family Papers - Accession 102

The Boulware Family Papers consist of photocopies of a plantation journal (302 pages) kept by Thomas McCullough Boulware I (1829-1889) and a genealogy of the Boulware family written by James Richmond Boulware II of Lakeland, Florida, in 1948. The journal concerns the Blackstocks Plantation in Chester County, South Carolina and subjects include the planting of crops and farming of land; family events, such as deaths, births and marriages; family travel and vacations; church affairs, including the local temperance league; land sales; free black and northerners in Chester County after the Civil War.

Mrs. W. E. Cochran Papers - Accession 103

The Mrs. W. E. Cochran Papers consist of histories, constitutions, bylaws, reports, memoranda, minutes, membership lists, newsletters, handbooks, brochures, manuals, newspaper clippings and photographs, relating to her involvement with the South Carolina Extension Homemakers’ Council (1936-1976), the National Home Demonstration Council (1960-1976), the Associated Country Women of the World (1947-1976), the Master Farm Homemakers’ Guild (1964-1976), and the South Carolina Council for the Common Good (1968-1972).

Thomas Smithwick Gettys Papers - Accession 54

Thomas Smithwick Gettys (1912-2003) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative for the Fifth Congressional District of South Carolina. The Thomas Smithwick Gettys Papers consist of reports, resolutions, correspondence, news releases, government publications, and newspaper clippings, relating to Getty’s efforts to enlarge and develop the Cowpens Battlefield Site of Cherokee County, South Carolina. Correspondents include Ernest Hollings, Donald Russell, John P. Saylor, W.S. Stuckey, Jr., Roy A. Taylor, Mark W. Clark, Wayne Aspinall, and Stewart Udall.

Sallie Pearce Musser Papers - Accession 55

Sallie Alta Pearce Musser (1902-1974) was a home demonstration agent (1930-1957), and head of the South Carolina Home Demonstration Service (1957-1965). The Sallie Pearce Musser Papers consist of biographical data, correspondence, letters of appreciation upon her retirement, newspaper clippings, photographs, and term papers written by Mrs. Musser while she was working on her MA in 1950 at George Peabody College for Women.

Church Women United in Columbia Records - Accession 191

The Church Women United In Columbia was founded in 1915 as the Women’s Interdenominational Missionary Union whose purpose was to work for the betterment of social and economic conditions in the city of Columbia, South Carolina. The collection consists of constitutions, bylaws, minutes, correspondence, reports, financial records, newsletters, newspaper clippings, lists, and other records relating to the history and civic activities of the organization.

Lithium sources in pore fluids of Peru slope

High Li concentrations, up to a maximum of 1155 µM are observed in the pore fluids of the Peru convergent margin slope sediments. At Ocean Drilling Program Sites 683 and 685 (ca. 9°S), the Li concentration depth gradients are twice as steep as at Site 682 and 688 (ca. 11°S). Within the sediments, the most important Li sources are from aluminosilicate minerals. Biogenic opal-A contains little Li and thus dilutes the Li concentration of the bulk sediments. The sediment compositions and the thermal regimes are similar at 9° and 11°S, suggesting there is an additional, non-sedimentary source for the observed high Li concentrations in the northern pore fluids. At 9°S, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios reach a maximum value of 0.709958. The observed radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr values in the pore fluids support the suggestion that the additional Li may derive from exchange reactions with underlying continental crust. The high concentrations of Li at 11°S may derive from basalt alteration at moderate to high temperatures, as suggested by the non-radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratios in these pore fluids, which reach a minimum value of 0.707218. Based on (1) Li concentrations in the pore fluids in slope sediments from Peru and several other margins, and (2) an approximate estimate of fluid flux from continental margins into the ocean, continental margins provide an estimated 1 to 3 * 10**10 moles Li/yr to the ocean. This source of oceanic Li, which has not been considered previously, is of the same order of magnitude as some estimates of hydrothermal and river Li fluxes and may have important consequences for the oceanic Li isotope budget. The sink is unknown for this newly discovered and possibly large Li source, but it may be more pervasive low-temperature alteration of oceanic basement than previously estimated, or burial of mineral phases, such as authigenic clay minerals, or metal oxyhydroxides which may be Li-rich.

Harvard College Lottery Book, 1794-1797

The long hardcover account book contains handwritten records of the Harvard College Lottery in the hand of College Treasurer Ebenezer Storer. The volume begins with a transcription of the Massachusetts General Court June 13, 1794 legislation sanctioning the lottery, and a note that the managers of the lottery gave security bonds to the Corporation. The bulk of the volume records the activities of the four classes of the lottery including lists of the individual tickets returned by the managers Benjamin Austin Jr., George R. Minot, Henry Warren, and John Kneeland, and the accounts of prizes drawn and tickets returned. The volume has a table of contents and there is a note pasted onto the third page calculating the sum raised if all tickets had been sold.

The report of the committee about Harvard Coledge: presented to the Generall Court held the 3 of (3) month, 1654

Two folio-sized leaves with a handwritten draft of the May 3, 1654 report of a General Court Committee authorized to investigate the financial state of Harvard College. The report responds directly to eight questions raised in the September 10, 1653 Order of the General Court that established the Committee. The report provides summaries of Harvard's income sources and disbursements, offers recommendations regarding the President's salary and the allowances for the academic Fellows, steward, butler, and cook, and indicates specific contributions from local towns.
